Cortana and Startup

Q: Cortana and Startup

Lately , Cortana has been been MIA and I have seen nothing as to what is happening or how to fix it . Inexplicably today it has reappeared and all systems seem normal . Just the fact that Cortana is missing doesn't bother me but along with that it also means I can not access Control Center or apps . When shutting down , the only option is to CTRL - ALT - Delete to shut it down and this can take a few tries sometimes which is hugely frustrating , especially when you are in a hurry to leave and don't want to leave things running . Does anyone either , know why this ? Or has it happened to you in the past ? It seems very odd that it goes missing for over a week and then just magically reappears like nothing ever happened . Anyone ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, erratic problems can be much harder to track down, and ones with no error message or precise and consistent symptoms very difficult to research.

So there was a time in the past when all was well.
Had you periodically used disk imaging, you could have restored an image from a date at which you didn't have the problem, so I'm assuming you haven't yet 'graduated' to using that invaluable tool, which allows you to restore your PC without technical help. (Hint )

So: some basic possibilities:
- corruption (disk/files)
- some change you've made which interferes with the OS
- settings
- sthg installed

So, I suggest you establish a base line:
1. Run
chkdsk C: /F
from an admin command prompt (Windows key + X, Command prompt (admin) )
(It's essential to know your disk is ok before undertaking repairs).

If that's ok
- Try a clean boot.
If the symptoms remain,
- See what happens in Safe Mode

Please report what you find with those.

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

Unless I click the microphone first. I have a brand new windows 10 computer. I've run set up to have her learn my voice and respond to Hey Cortana, but she will only hear me if I click the microphone first (and she has no problem hearing me). Googled this issue and it appears I'm not the only one with this problem and thus far Microsoft Forums have not really come up with a solution for me or anyone else, other than setting up a new account profile which didn't work. They want me to do a repair in place upgrade which means I'll have to reinstall windows 10. This is a windows 10 computer, not an upgrade. Is there any other option? Can you assist? I have RealTek Digital Output.

My HP All In One computer Windows 10 had for 8 months. "Hey Cortana" worked very good up until a month ago. I still am able to type a question, The microphone does not work. I have no idea what happened.

A:Cortana

I had the same problem on my Dell. I then found out that it was 'noise enchantments' stopping the microphone from working properly. To fix this you go on your audio controller (Mine is called Dell audio but you have hp so it's probably different) then you find the microphone section and turn off all the enchantments.

I have only had W10 for a few days and it's keeping me entertained.
I just used Cortana. I said "I can't install windows updates"
This is where Cortana took me. I don't need a dictionary any more.
You might think this isn't all the great, but to a old man it's pretty impressive. I now have someone with a very sweet voice to talk to and she is very nice. She said she liked me. How cool is that??
I recommend giving W10 a try. You have 30 days to try it and then roll back if you don't like it. I recommend the clean install rather then the upgrade.

I keep getting Cortana leaping up at me whenever I click on the start box, and want to know how to disable/remove this annoyance. I have read through a procedure using regedit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and so on, that eventually gets me to where I must ensure that an "AllowCortana" value is set to 0 (zero).

I have followed this advice to the letter several times, but nothing is changed once I have restarted my PC. Can anyone please point me the way of correcting this?

I've just activated Cortana but not having much luck.

Is there a guide anywhere as to what can/can't be done with the app?

For example, I added some things to my calendar, and asked if there was anything in there for today (both spoken and typed question).

When spoken, all I get in response is: 'Something's not right. Try again in a little bit'.

When typed, a search is performed, but no documents are found.

It's quite possible I'm totally misunderstanding how Cartana works, but I would have thought that searching my calendar would be fairly basic.

Any help appreciated.

Cortana has been extremely glitchy for the past few days; many have posted about it.
I suspect there may be some transitions going on internally in preparation for a new Build. I'm just guessing though.

Hi people,
I've recently installed Windows 10 and was messing around with the tools and settings, especially the search button next to Start. When I looked into Cortana I enabled her to try it out, but it seems I cannot disable her completely. I want the search feature
as how it was when I installed the OS.
Here is a screenshot (https://gyazo.com/6c338cc261adad458f01f2456b08de3f) of how it looks now, and I would like to get it back to default which looks like this (http://imgur.com/a/W2KHt).
I tried these instructions:

1.Left click on Search
box.

2.Click Sandwich
icon on Top left.

3.Click Settings and Turn
off the button under ?Do you want Cortana to work for you??

This will turn off Cortana on your user profile. If you want to remove Search box in taskbar, right click on taskbar and
click Search and choose Disabled.

But there isn't a "Turn off" feature anywhere to be found. Any help is appreciated!

Q: Cortana

Have searched but can not find a clear answer. Will Cortana open websites? From what I read, it will providing the website is bookmarked and pinned. Is this correct?
If the website requires login, eg eBay, will Cortana do the login for you? Since Edge will be able to save usernames and passwords, it seems possible. Eg, can I say "Hey Cortana, open eBay" and the eBay login page opens. Then can I say, "Hey Cortana, login to eBay" or will I have to click the login button?
I am asking this for my visually impaired friend. I am wondering if Win 10 with Edge and Cortana could help him. Thanks.

A:Cortana

Hi Artbuc From what I can read, Cortana could already open websites by voice on Windows 8.1 for Phone, so I don't know why the Cortana on Windows 10 couldn't do a such thing http://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-websites-voice-cortanaAs for the login, you can use Cortana to login on Facebook apparently, but I don't know for the other websites.https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/cortana/cortanas-settingsAlso, saving passwords locally in a browser is a security risk, so I wouldn't do that. I would use a password manager instead like LastPass.

A:Who is Cortana?

Answer to thread title: Cortana is the name of a fictional character in the Halo video game.

Now as to your question on it/her, in Windows 10, Cortana is a web search/system & folder search tool, that can be used by voice or text(typing). Like any search tool, you need to be more specific, and if using voice, Cortana needs to be trained. Also when cleaning your system(browser and OS) you need to make sure you DO NOT clean MS search or browser history, so Cortana can learn your interest's, and you can benefit from the advanced search algorithm.

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out to us!

As you would know that Cortana is region specific ,if the OS language and installation is done with English US Settings - Cortana will only work with respective regional settings.

I discovered recently that Cortana had been corrupted on one of my systems. There was no ?search? function, or anything else. I tried everything I could find on line to fix it, but no joy.

As a last resort I re-installed Windows 10 (latest download). While that solved the Cortana problem, it also introduced a network one that has yet to get resolved.

To solve the (more important) network situation, I reverted to the previous C-drive image and am again without the Cortana service.

Has anyone else had a problem with Cortana, and/or perhaps an idea about how to restore the functionality?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi folk. For my first post I thought Id pose a question relating to my lack of sound from Cortana. I am not sure why but I get no sound when I am setting it up. during setup you are asked what Cortana is to call you. After putting in my name there is then a button to click to find out if it is pronounced correctly. But all I get is silence. I'm getting sound ok from games etc so its obviously something Ive overlooked. Anyone able to help out please? (I'm using build 10049).
If I go to system -> Cortana & search -> customise Cortana & search settings it does not do anything. No new window opens or extra details - nothing.

A:No sounds from Cortana

Your post is very old but I just had the same problem. In my case two different audio systems were plugged in.
1) External speakers plugged into the green jack on my computers rear.
2) My display has built in audio speakers connected by HDMI.

A Google search revealed that Cortana will not make any sounds when two different audio systems are plugged in.

Right Click on the sound icon in the right side of your taskbar and go to Playback devices.
Right Click on one device and select DISABLE to Disable the Digital output that you?re not using then Restart your computer.

I am only posting this solution because no other solution was posted.
I hope my post might help others in the future.

Another solution was offered but I did not need to use it. (see below)

Reset Cortana

Maybe resetting Cortana to its default settings can solve the problem. Here?s what you need to do to completely reset Cortana in Windows 10 - Open Cortana and go to Settings. The first button allows you to disable Cortana, so just disable Cortana with that button. It says: ?Turning off Cortana clears what Cortana knows on this device, but won?t delete anything from the Notebook. After Cortana is off, you can decide what you?d like to do with anything still stored in the cloud?.
Restart your computer and enable Cortana again

This will make Cortana completely forget about all your settings, so it would act like you just installed Windows, so maybe the solution for sound problem with Corta... Read more

Hello
I have been trying to solve this by myself and in doing so found many people with the same issue. As soon as I put Cortana 'ON' the light to the camera/mic stays on. I don't think I am being spied upon but a light can only stay on so long before it is, so long.
I am now using Google with voice search but I would think Cortana should work when enabled w/o the light staying on.
I have a usb Creative mic/camera for the desktop and a built in for the laptop.
I am trying to use Win 10 fully, but find 'photo', 'mail' etc to be inferior to Win essentials and previous products. There is no video editor unless you use the old Windows dvd app but that has limitations and needs codecs to be imported. It seem the technology is either cheaper or poorly designed. I can see Linux taking over if this trend continues because the apps are getting less functional. The numerous options are dazzling regarding privacy and would take a etch to know which to enable, or not.

Anyway, what is causing this lite issue and is there a solution or reasonable answer?
Thank you
Peter

This started two days ago: Whenever I click on the taskbar search box, Cortana pops up, as always; but now, instead of just showing my local weather, there is a message, "Get Cortana on your phone", with links for Android, Windows Phone, and iPhone.
I tried a clean boot, in case it was some third party software causing it, but that isn't the case. Chatting with MS 'Support' was useless; she didn't have a clue. She thought I needed to sync my phone.
The message does disappear as soon as I start typing in the search box, but it's still annoying. I'm running Windows 10 Home, build 10586. The Anniversary update didn't trigger this; I installed that a few weeks ago. Oh, and I did try clicking on the Android link, and installed the app on my phone, thinking that might get rid of the message: no such luck.
Any ideas ...?

A:Anyone else getting Cortana spam?

No, because people go into the top hamburger button and turn that stuff off, along with going into System settings and uncheck any check boxes in the various sections to not share info, etc.

If you do not want or need a Windows live account, you can run Windows 10 with a local and only have the live account for updates.

I can type in a question to Cortana and that works fine but to speak to Cortana I guess I have set up a microphone, it that right? I know it doesn't have to be expensive but what of some of you using for a cheap mic?

A:Cortana in Windows 10
