I've had my laptop connected to a TV through HDMI for years and it suddenly stopped working. The HDMI output is no longer listed as a playback device. It now shows spdif digital out via HP dock. The picture is fine but there is no sound. Also when you go to the playback settings screen the green lights are jumping next to the spdif which is set as default but there is no sound. I have tried everything if you do a Google search on this topic it seems like it is a common problem but there is no specific solution. I believe the HDMI playback device disappeared after the last Windows 10 update. The HDMI is not under hidden devices but it is listed under audio in the control panel.

One thing you could try is to open up the Control panel then click on Sound and then go to the Playback tab and see if there is anything in there to enable it that's what I had to do on my laptop.

Hi, I've a strange problem with the sound output via HDMI. If my T460 is connected to a dockingstation and my monitor is connected to the station via HDMI cable I've sound output from the speakers. So everything works fine and I can also the monitor as device for sound outpu at the sound options. Then I change only one thing at my setup. I directly connect the monitor with the same HDMI cable directly to the HDMI port of my notebook. The video signal is still transmitted perfectly but the sound is gone. Also the device for sound is gone from the sound options. I've only graphics from the intel on board chip and all drivers are uptodate. I also reinstalled them several times. What can I do to solve this problem? Always use the dockingstation is no option, because I also want to connect the notebook to a TV or so and I can't carry a dockingstation with me all the time. Thanks for help!

my laptop is dell 15-7569. It has Intel Graphics 520 graphics card and realtek audio chip. I also have a Vizio 5.1 sound bar connecting to my dell laptop over HDMI cable.
laptop -> HDMI cable -> vizio sb4051-C0
I can play stereo sound over HDMI to the sound bar, but cannot play 5.1 surround sound.
In control pannel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> playback -> intel display audio -> configure, I can only see "stereo", but no "5.1" available.
I have installed the latest Intel Graphics 520 driver.
Can anyone help me play 5.1 sound over HDMI? Thanks.
Here is another screenshot showing my speaker only support 2 channels.
But I tested my speaker using its own "speaker test" function, I can hear all 5 speakers and the subwoofer working well.
Hello, I was just recently using my computer when all of a sudden the screen went black for a second and the sound cut out permanently. I have restarted my computer multiple times, changed HDMI ports, set the HDMI driver to default, and basically everything that Google will tell me to do. After following some advice I found on the internet about reinstalling my sound drivers, I can no longer even access the sound mixer (it has an icon with a red x on it instead of sound bars) I'm truly lost here, both the speakers and my headphones wont work. What should I do to fix this problem?

Hi everyone,
I have been struggling with this for weeks - whenever I plug my computer into a TV through an HDMI cable, the screen visual transfers perfectly but no sound comes through the TV.
Please note that I have scoured the forums and have tried all of the basic suggestions that people have given:
-HDMI or similar does not show up in 'Playback Devices'
-All of my drivers are up to date

the HDMI sound is most likely off your GPU but that series seems to not have a HDMI port so that is odd. If you can make sure your onboard audio is on in your BIOS and also run the tool on this page so that you can update all your system info for us. System Info - See Your System Specs

After working correctly, suddenly there is no TV sound when playing iPlayer or BBC websites - just sound on laptop.
But YouTubes and other TV channels and catch ups play audio correctly.
On a free internet TV site some channels like CNN play the sound but others like those in Russia just play the laptop sound.
Beats me what can be wrong if the HDMI lead works on some channels but not others.
I'm not techie so if solutions please try to simplify for me! Thanks

I recently ran into a problem with my main LCD TV(I need to replace the power supply.) I use that LCD TV for my desktop computer, and right now all I have is my laptop. I use synergy to control both computers. However now it doesn't matter because I cannot see the desktop portion. Is there anyway for me to output my desktop computer to my laptop monitor?
Both my Desktop and Laptop have HDMI input. I also have the HDMI cord on hand right now I just don't know how I'd go about setting it up. I'd like to use synergy to control the desktop AND have it's output be on the laptop until my power supply arrives and I can fix my TV.

I have a new Dell 17r inspiron laptop that only has hdmi output.
I have projectors that connect with VGA port only.
I purchased hdmi to vga adapters and when I connect to the laptop the image will jump from the laptop to the projector and jump back to the laptop and it will continue to do this over and over.
There are no error messages. on either. These are working projectors. These are new hdmi/vga adapters.
I have tried to change resolution to lower settings and I have tried to lower refresh rates. The projector can support all of what resolutions the laptop has for settings thus the image does show for a second on the projector. These are smartboard/projector 600 series. I have also tried swapping our the adapters that didn't work either. I have also tried making the resolution settings shutting down laptop , connect the hdmi/vga adapter and turn the laptop back on and the issue is still the same. I can't find any posts/forums on this issue to date.
Thanks,

C0v3r,
I am not aware of any issues with the 17r using external monitors. I would suggest trying to narrow down the problem and go from there. I certainly understand that you may not have all the devices present but if you do I would try to verify if this is problem with HDMI on the notebook, a problem with the adapters, or the monitors.
Basic steps, try running the notebook under power saving or high performance in the Nvidia control panel. The system is an optimus and it would be interesting to find if the problem only occurs with the integrated Intel GPU (power saving) or the Nvidia GPU (high performance). If you aren't familiar with configuring Optimus the following document may help.
Uninstall and reinstall video drivers. Download the latest Intel and Nvidia video drivers for your model of notebook from support.dell.com. Download the drivers and save them to the desktop, please don't install them yet. Uninstall the Intel and Nvidia driver and software from the system and reboot. Now install the drivers, with the Intel driver first, followed by the Nvidia driver.
If possible connect the notebook to a HDMI monitor, something that doesn't require the use of any adapters and see if the problem continues. Verify if the HDMI ports is working at all on the notebook.
If it looks like video is working fine on the notebook, and HDMI works well. Test the HDMI to VGA adapters. If possible try them on ... Read more

I have a HP Compaq 2230s laptop and it has a HDMI port. I use a High-Speed HDMI cable to connect it to my LG 3D Smart TV. I finds the video but it does not get the audio (partially).
Once I connected, I tested for sound using the volume mixer and the "ding" is played on my TV. But when I try to play a song from my laptop, it is coming from my laptop speakers!
How can I fix this? It's very annoying.
Thank you!!!
Right click on the volume icon in the Notification area and select 'Playback devices.' On the Playback tab select the HDMI and set it as default and make sure the Properties and Configuration are OK.
That worked on my newer HP laptop. On my older one I think the sound works on HDMI only with Windows Media Center. Or maybe that was only with Vista and I should try again now that I am running Windows 7 on it.

Read other 3 answersI am considering buying an HDMI splitter to get around a problem I now have when streaming music only from the Internet. Currently I have about a 15 ft. cable running from the HDMI output on my computer to my Samsung TV. With this setup everything works fine. I can watch Youtube videos or Netflix movies. The thing that I don't like is that if I want to just stream music for several hours, I have to leave the TV on since the audio connection from the TV to my receiver is not a pass thru. It is only live when the TV is on. I am wondering if I can use an HDMI splitter to solve this problem. What I plan to do is to connect the computer HDMI output to the input on the splitter. Then use one of the splitter's outputs to go to the Samsung TV and the other one to go to my receiver via an HDMI-to-2 Channel Stereo Y-adapter. Just wondering if the connection to the non-HDMI device via the Y-adapter will upset the functioning of the splitter. What about the the EDID handshaking and HDCP signal that HDMI sources and displays need in order to function?

OK, that driver should have worked. Just click on that folder 7-zip created because I want to show you where to find the driver. We are now going to try to force the installation. Click on the folder and it will show several folders. Click on the DisplayAudio folder. Then there are two folders inside that one. Click on the top one listed (6.16.00.3178). Then click on the IntcDAud Setup information file and you will see the driver for the hardware ID you posted. HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2807&SUBSYS_80860101. Close out of that now. Go to the device manager and click on the HD audio device again. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option again, but this time at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Then click on Have Disk and browse right to that IntcDAud Setup information file and see if the driver will install that way. If it does, restart the PC. If it doesn't, unfortunately, I have no idea why that driver won't install because it should have worked using the first method. But that missing driver is why you have no audio from the HDMI out port.

Hi,
A suggestion - go to the Dell website support and downloads pages, and download the W7 audio drivers for your Rig from there.
You could also visit the audio chip manufacturer's site to download W7 drivers from there.
All of these new drivers should provide the HD Audio driver which is required for the audio to be transported over the HDMI cable, provided that the cable is at least a "version 1.3" cable

Yesterday I installed a new external hard drive - following the installation - my sound no longer played through my television (video is fine, HDMI connection) and sound now comes ONLY through the laptop speakers.
The option for HDMI Audio doesn't appear in the 'sound' menus. I have 'checked' "shoe disabled" and "show disconnected" in those menus.
Basic Specs:
DV7-4060us
Windows 7/64bit
IDT High Definition Audio Codec
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4250
I have tried the following fixes gleaned from other forum posts on similar forum posts:
Uninstalling and reinstalling IDT drivers - didn't work.
HP driver 'recovery manager' to install 'original' IDT audio codecs - didn't work.
Unistalled ATI Video Drivers , and reinstalled them - didn't work
System Restore to a week ago - didn't work.
I use my HD TV as my primary monitor for gaming, so having sound through laptop speakers and not TV is quite annoying.
Perhaps my only solution is another sound card?
So you're trying to get audio to play on your TV from your laptop? Since you said the video is fine it's obviously not the video drivers. It sounds like the sound output is configured wrong. I don't think it would be labeled as HDMI. HDMI is just DVI with HD Audio. Try altering your sound settings to see what you can get.
Audio is a very difficult thing to diagnose and fix.

I recently tried hooking my HP G60 laptop up to my 50in Element plasma tv using a VGA cable to take movies that I have downloaded on my laptop and watch them on the tv to sort of do away with having to burn the movies onto a DVD. I had no luck with the VGA cable as I got no picture what so ever on the tv. So I went out and purchased a HDMI cable after do much research on the internet on what was the best option to hook your computer up to your High Def tv and found that using an HDMI cable was a great option as you can achieve video and sound from one cable (or so I had thought).
I hooked the cable into the HDMI slot 1 on the back of my plasma and into the HDMI port on my laptop. I can get perfect picture, but I have yet to achieve any sound coming out of the tv, I was of course able to get sound out of the laptop speakers but when I did some searches online of ways to get the sound to transfer over to the tv speakers, everything that I tried left me still with no sound. I have did endless searches with basically almost every search that I do or forum that I read on giving a different answer or way to go about it, and I am basically stuck about to give up and need some guidance or insight or something.
I'm not fabulous or a genius on computers but I am pretty decent at them so I will do my best to answer anything that I may need to. Just please be gentle
Thanks in advance!!

I've tried reinstalling both the Thunderbolt drivers and the display drivers with no luck. Any ideas? I'd like to avoid completely reinstalling Windows as I know that'll probably be a suggestion.

Tried new cable? Fiddled around with the options in the control panel? Left nvvsvc.exe and nvxdsync.exe alone?Latest drivers? Not sitting too close to the TV?
Read other 6 answersI want to use 2 displays using HDMI, but the only problem is that when I plug in my HDMI to my TV through the motherboard, it does not work. I know some do not support it which is why I am coming here. My mother board and graphics card are in my account so look there for the details on my computer. Thank you
I've seen a number of computers where the addition of an Add-in Video card automatically disabled the onboard adapter. The only thing that worked to restore the onboard adapter was to remove that Add-in card. You may want to consider getting a different Add-in card that has 2 HDMI ports. Or if your motherboard has 2 PCIe X16 slots get a 2nd matching card.
Read other 1 answersI purchased an external monitor on Friday. It worked on Friday and Saturday. Sunday when I booted up, the external monitor no longer worked. The history appears to show an automatic update occurred overnight. I was running Windows 8.1. I upgraded to 10. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the intel video driver, I reinstalled the chipset driver. I have trimmed the micro HDMI cord as suggested in one of the posts. I have seen enough posts on the various boards to know my issue does not seem to be an isolated case... but I haven't been able to find an explanation of the cause or a reliable solution. Any help is appreciated.
Read other answersI'm trying to hook up my TV with my computer, and for the most part it's working. The video goes through and I get how to control it and everything. The only thing not working is the sound.
I'm using an HDMI to HDMI cable, and like I said the video is fine. Also, when the cable is plugged into my boyfriend's laptop, the sound comes out of the TV.
So this must mean the problem is with my computer specifically. Although, this computer is only a month old, so I wouldn't think anything is out of date.
I have no idea what's relevant, so I don't know what to post screenshots of, but I've read tons of other threads with the same issues but none of their solutions seem to work for me.
Info on your computer would help. We can only talk in generalites or suggestions without it. In most cases, if you have a full HDMI port with both audio and video, when you plug in an HDMI cable Windows changes the default audio playback device from the "Speakers" (your PC sound card) to "HDMI".
In your case the ATI (now called AMD) should be the device that is feeding the video and audio.
As your PC is only 1 month old, the PC vendor's tech support should be the ones to call since you haven't been able to find a solution to date.
Hi there
I actually LIKE the SKY Q package -- also now 4K UHD available - and it's cheaper than the SKY HD + if you are selective in what you choose (apart from the up front cost).
BUT
1) only 1 HDMI output at back of box so get HDMI splitter -- works fine and bypasses any HDMI restriction on copying etc.
2) if you want to RECORD to DVD recorder -- then there's no SCART or A/V outputs - so just get HDMI-->SCART converter --works fine. !!!
Note most DVD recorders still record at 576p - no probs really for older stuff and you can connect the output from the HDMI splitter into the converter for your DVD recorder.
I still use DVD recording sometimes to make physical DVD recordings of stuff I can't get elsewhere -- and then on the computer use MAKEMKV to convert the DVD recording to an MKV file for playing via streaming services such as PLEX.
SKY says this can't be done - but the Chinese 2 way HDMI splitter (use cheap powered version --the expensive ones retain HDMI protection !!!) works fine -- Max output though is 1080p.
iSolem 1x2 3D HDMI Switch Box - Splits HDMI Signals: Amazon.co.uk: Camera Photo
HDMI to SCART Composite Video Converter Stereo Audio: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics
Make sure though you use POWERED HDMI splitter --then no degradtion of signal.
I'm looking now at what to do for 4K UHD as well but AFAIK there's no way of recording yet a 4K UHD signal so I'll have to wait for somebody to come up with a way of ripping a live TV 4... Read more
