Q: Local :C Drive Doesnt Open on Double Click, Prompts to Choose a Program to open file

Foremost, Let me thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide. What you're about to read may be a mouthful however I am doing as I was instructed to do in being very specific and detailed. This is in response to
Thread: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help | http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html
My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. After having done the XP repair option it seemed to have made progress beacause I could see windows beginning to load and Avast Antivirus doing its Pre Boot Scan (it took a long time to scan). While it scanned I could see a multitude of infections or files that displayed trojan so I opted to delete all. Finally windows was back to loading normal again. The next couple of days Avast would detect trojans as my PC continued to stabilize. Any sign of detection from Avast I choose to Delete.

To sum things up... My computer is stable now and running what appears to be normal. However now encountering this issue with my C drive not opening when I double click on it (or F, any "Harddisk" of that matter). I have to right click on it and select Explore to open the drive window. What happens upon double clicking is, I get the window prompt saying to: "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" with the list of programs (same as you would get when trying to open an unrecognized file for which you dont have a software/program for). Now, there seems to be some bugginess tied into this because when I highlight a program to choose, the check box that that gives you the option to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is disabled not cannot be checked/turned on. I attempted to assign it the explorer program in which it opens (located in windows system folder "explorer.exe") but as I just stated I can't check the box.

This brings me to how I discovered your forum. Upon a google, I found the
Thread: [SOLVED] Drive C won't open | http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...en-245424.html

I followed the instruction there although encountering another quirk where as I wasn't able to use the "show hidden files & folders" option which then forced me to look into that issue. Within minutes.. THANK GOD! I found a REAL knowledgeable tech who stepped in to this thread (Non TSF) and got straight to the point instead of lilly gagging and asking questions to the person who was asking the question to begin with. Pardon me I'm just venting for a second, some techs just beat around the bush and can drag a thread on for days by just asking elementary questions instead of posting solutions. (You'll see what I mean if you look at the post)
Thread [Non TSF]: "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows (XP) has no effect | http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-623...sageID=2302408

After all of that, I deleted that "autorun.ini" file which seems to have been a common thread over the year. However, nothing changed and I still cant access my C drive normally by double clicking. That Brings me to this forum right now and posting this. As per your request the Log and attachement is as follows:

Preferred Solution: Local :C Drive Doesnt Open on Double Click, Prompts to Choose a Program to open file

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I got a virus asking me to buy some kind of virus software. Of course I did not buy it. I ran norton antivirus and malware bytes right away. Norton removed a virus and malware did not find anything. After that when I went to click on Internet Explorer and microsoft word it would ask me to pick a program to use to open this file.

I looked around on this site (tech support guy) and I found a post that said to do this......

"Go here File association fixes for Windows Vista and download the fix for EXE files.
Extract the enclosed .reg file to your desktop, then double click it to merge into the registry. "

I did that and all seems to be working fine now. My question is how do I know if the virus or spyware are totally gone off my computer.

Do I need to download a newer version of the malware bytes because mine is about 1 year old?

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

I am answering a previous thread that has been closed. For Windows XP users. If you try to open your c drive and it gives you the dialog box asking what program to open it with, and it does the same when you right click the drive and click on explorer, it is a problem with file association. None of the fixes stated in the previous thread worked but I have found a easy solution for anyone that needs the fix.

go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
there will be a link called "Drive Association Fix (Restores default settings for hard drives)"
download this file and save it onto your hard drive (it will be a zip file)
extract the zip file and double click on the file extracted.
it will ask you to confirm the selection, click yes and your problem will be fixed.
It is a regristry file that only restores the defaults for Windows XP. If you have a different OS then you need to look for the same thing that will restore the defaults for whatever OS you have.

I have Windows 8.1 and on my desktop are several PNG files and shortcuts. When I double click on any of them the program that opens is Directory Opus (I use this instead of Windows Explorer). I checked the defaults and it is NOT Directory Opus. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

A:Double click does not open default program

Right click on the file (not link) /open with /choose default program / and associate with windows photo viewer or Pictures ( metro app)
P.S. "open with" may be under "x64" heading.

Hopefully this will be an acceptable forum to put this in. Honestly, I'm not sure where else.

So, here's the problem:

If I double-click on an Excel file, I get the following message: ""Windows cannot find /path/. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." Excel opens up fine, but without the workbook. If, within Excel, I open the file up using OfficeOrb -> Open, it opens just fine.

Why, you ask, did I not put this in the MS Office area? Because the same thing occurs with National Instruments LabView .vi files. Only difference is that the file opens in LabView. So, this suggests a Windows Explorer issue, not an MS Office issue.

Here's another strange thing: It doesn't really seem to have anything to do with any particular install. While I was working on finding a solution for this, somehow the same thing happened with my Word documents. Figuring it might be some kind of odd issue, I decided to roll back with a restore point. That fixed the Word issue, but not the Excel or LabView ones.

Now, I'd love to blame SP1, but the LabView one started before I installed SP1.

I've tried most of the simple solutions people have suggested for the Excel one (which annoys me far more than the LabView one, to be honest). My "Ignore other applications..." box is unchecked, to no avail. Most posts on this topic are with Office 2003 and XP, so they are of limited value (I suspect XP is the more important limitation).

A:File Won't Open on Double-Click

Okay, so incredibly, I solved this. Hours and hours later, I solved it.

This is going to sound incredibly stupid, but the solution (for both applications) was as follows:

1) Go to the root directory for the executable for the program (example: C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/Office12)
2) Right-click on the executable (in this case, EXCEL.EXE)
3) Select "Properties"
4) Click on the "Compatibility" tab
5) Unselect "Run this program as an administrator"

Yes, that's right. I solved a problem by not running the program as an administrator.

If anyone has a similar problem, but this is not the issue, let me know. I probably ran across an alternative while I was searching.

Now if I can just figure out how to tip my own scales for this solution...

When you double-click on the file it opens up to a blank presentation. Once that is open if you click open and navigate to the file then it opens correctly.
I have checked the registry and the open/command path is correct. Any other ideas will help. All the others work fine Word, Excel and Outlook.

A:PPTX file will not open using Double Click

If your file became corrupted when PowerPoint or your computer crashed, there may be a temporary version of the file in your TEMP directory. If so, you can try the aforementioned Insert, Slides From File and browse to that file. Or you can try changing the file's extension to PPT and see if you can open it from within PowerPoint using File, Open. You could also do a search for *.TMP files on the off chance that it's not in your TEMP directory.
If the presentation seems corrupted or on the verge of it, but you can still open it, download and use the CloneMe add-in from Microsoft (for PowerPoint 97 or 2000) or for PowerPoint 2000 and higher, try HTML "Round-tripping" to repair corruption
Many users have recovered damaged PPT presentations by opening them in Impress, the presentation program included with Sun's Star Office presentation package or the free Open Office.
Or you may use professional software for .ppt and .pptx files http://www.pptx.openfiletool.com/ PPTX Open File Tool

This is happening on Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.I get the error "Choose the program you want to open this file" when trying to open Firefox. It happens for every other EXE (like calc) as well, but only in Normal Mode. When I'm in Safe Mode, everything works fine. It's weird because I cancel the error and it actually pulls up an Untitled webpage in Firefox and lets me browse. Many sites have mentioned an EXE reg fix which I have merged with my registry in Safe Mode and it has no affect on being able to open EXEs in Normal Mode.Other steps I have taken include a full Spybot S&D scan/removal, a thorough HijackThis scan/removal, GMER scan/removal, ComboFix scan/removal, MalwareBytes Antimalware scan/removal, and ESET's free online virus scanner.I have performed all these diagnostic steps in Safe Mode with Networking.I even went into Set Program Access & Defaults to ensure that Firefox was selected as my default browser.Any other ideas to get rid of this error besides the steps I took above?

A:Choose the program you want to open this file

Did you try a different browser, in case it'a Firefox issue?

Did you try uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox?

Are you saying that you cannot run any .exe file in normal mode...but they all work in safe mode?

Hi, I'm a newbie to this site and am hoping someone out there, who is a lot better with computers than me, will be able to help. I am having a very similar problem to the one discussed here:

Norton removed a virus and now I seem to be having problems opening files etc.

I having a very similar problem right down to the scroll function on the touchpad not working. When I try to open programs from my desktop or from the start menu I get the following message:

Choose the program you want to use to open this file.

When I try to open Microsoft Office programs I get the following:

C:/program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\ Office12\EXCEL.EXE

Application not found.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel

I can open both Internet Explorer and Windows Live Mail, but they seem to be the only 2 at present.

I have tried your suggested fix - downloading the .exe fix and merging it with the registry. I get the following message:

The keys and values contained in C:\Users\Claire\Desktop\exefix_cu.reg have been successfully added to the registry.

But no change to my problems.

Hope I have given you enough info. I'm not that great at computer jargon so please be patient with me and let me know if you need any more info. Any suggestions and help gratefully received

I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

A:Choose the program you want to use to open this file

what was the "virus scanner" you used as you have to be careful about ones that pop up whilst on the internet, as the results are fake and will actually install more viruses on when you click download this to remove the viruses, but with your issue you most likely need to re-install windows or get a good quality virus scanner like norton or kaspersky to thoroughly search your computer to remove all the viruses and try to recover the data you may have lost

hope this helps

Everytime I restart my laptop, I get this pop up "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" for a file that has no extension, or at least the extension of the file isn't shown. I tried opening the file with notepad and get some sort of list with the title "Interface List".

I checked my startup folder and it was empty.
This problem only started a few days ago, and I can't recall doing anything different other than installing Symantec Endpoint Protection and running a full scan.

Any suggestions? I can upload print screens if necessary.

I used avast and AVG to get rid of the virus.

Every time I try to open any program, my PC asks me to "Choose the program you want to open this file". So I have to go to run as administrator and use the file. I tried to go to Control Panel and try using the Add/Remove program to check if there was any program I can use to fix this problem. But none of the programs in the Control Panel work.

even if i try running regedit, a message comes up saying "C:Windows\regedit.exe Application cannot be found"

i tryied a system restore, but there was an error message for that too, i just dont remember what it said
This happens for each and every application in the Control Panel. The next thing I tried to do was go for the Desktop properties. By right clicking on the desktop, I go to properties. It says the same thing.

Hi and welcome!

Try this: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the desktop. Right click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note: You need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Restart your computer.

If the fix opens as a text file then right click it and select Open With > Choose Program Then, select Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I clicked on a link in a website of a local State Representative. A box came up saying "You have chosen to download a file from this location", and then it asks "What would you like to do with this file?" I chose "Open this file from it's current location". After the file downloaded, it asks "What program would you like to use to open this file?" So far, I have not found anything that will allow me so see the file.

I am assuming that it is a text type file, and I tried wordpad and notepad. What I end up seeing is a whole lot of little symbols with a few words here and there. How do I know what program to "choose" to open this kind of thing?
This has happened to me before with some attachments to emails I received, but I gave up on them!

Last night when I double clicked on my C Drive it asked me to "Choose a program to open with the following file: C:\"! First time seen this here. It was the same for the D Drive as well. I tried googling for this problem and found that few people were also complaining about it, and blaming it on viruses/corrupt system.

Anyway, I scanned with my Anti-Virus, Avast Home Edition on boot and found few viruses and deleted:

C:\Program file\VideoAddon\isfmm.exe with Win32:Zlob-AIK [Trj]
C:\Program file\VideoAddon\ctmdl.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

I also scanned with Bit Defender and Kaspersky Online Scanners. Kaspersky Online said 'Object is locked... skipped'. I don't know what that means but I uninstalled Avast and downloaded and installed Kaspersky trial version. I Scanned with it and it detected and deleted:

Having had an IRC Bot infection, Backdoor.Win32.Rbot,here is something you must consider. Possibly the safest thing you can do is a full format and reinstall of the OS.Win32.Rbot is an IRC controlled backdoor (or "bot") that can be used to gain unauthorized access to a victim's machine. It can also exhibit worm-like functionality by exploiting weak passwords on administrative shares and by exploiting many different software vulnerabilities, as well as backdoors created by other malware. There are many variants of Rbot, and more are discovered regularly. Rbot is highly configurable, and is being very actively developed, however the core functionality is quite consistent between variants.Rbot's main function is to act as an IRC controlled backdoor. It attempts to connect to a predefined IRC server and join a specific channel so that the victim's computer can be controlled. The IRC server, port number, channel and password differ with each variant.Rbot also listens on TCP port 113 to provide ident services, which are required by some IRC servers.Once the victim's computer is under control, the overseer is able to instruct Win32.Rbot to attempt to perform malicious operations such as spreading via administrative shares with weak passwords or the DCOM RPC exploit. The .pdf and .rtf associations are set correctly to Adobe Reader and Wordpad but double-click or enter only responds by opening Windows Explorer. The right-click context menu lists "Open with Adobe Reader X" correctly and certainly works but is not how I'm used to working for the last however many years .pdf has been around.

I had hoped that if I could somehow get Adobe Reader into the Default Programs list and that that would help. However, Wordpad IS listed in my Default Programs and is set for .rtf and .docx but double-clicking .rtf does not respond by opening WordPad, only Windows Explorer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT has Persistent Handler and ShellEx settings for .pdf but I don't know for sure if these are the relevant keys.

I'm also amazed (well, not really...) that MS apparently has no system for people to report bugs, only a system to take your money to (hopefully?) solve your problem...

I don't know when i get infected by the virus, but last nite my AVG Free Edition detected my pc was infected with Trojan Horse in all my hard drives (C,D,F). AVG can't heal it and went into the virus vault section.

Without knowing anything, i delete all the infected files. After removing those files, everytime i double click on any hard drives icon in "My Computer", i get the error: Can not find script file “C:\autorun.vbs”, “D:\autorun.vbs”, “F:\autorun.vbs” and the drive won’t open. I still can access my files through window explorer. When I right click on a hard drive, i can see weird text (See attached pictures)

Please help as i'm clueless and i'm not very good in pc stuffs. I don't want end up formatting my all my drives as i got alot of files in it. Thanks

I first had a problem when i was unalbe to open my drives by double clicking,
when addressing my problem to win XP-support forum they gave a solution by converting the "autorun.inf" to "autorun.bak" in the drivers root, this partially solved the problem .
they also suggested that i have an infection and they were right cause AVG has detected a threat and deleted it.
But after the first scan by AVG and restarting...it came on to a different infection :

I had been using my Dell Inspiron 531 in Safe Mode with Networking for a while, after applying Roxio Easy Media Center 9. I didn't worry when my CA antivirus subscription ran out because I figured Safe Mode would give adequate protection. I ran a system restore recently. Then I installed Norton Internet Security 2009 right away, and ran full system scan several times, which found and fixed more than 200 security risks (oops!). Now I can run the machine outside of Safe Mode which is great, except for a new issue -- whenever I try to open virtually any .exe, I get blocked by the message:

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I suspect some malware messed with the registry during the restore. I tried to run system restore again, but that too gets blocked by the new problem.

In researching the problem, I found some related hits for XP, but none that seemed to be specifically for Vista.

Any suggestions?

I have been having problems opening up my adobe documents. I can right click on them and then get the box to choose a program to open it and it will open. But if I go down to the bottom left corner to where that box is to always use that program to open that kind of file is greyed out?

Any tips?

A:Win 7 64 bit (choose a program to open a file, always use selected )

Have you tried setting your "Default Programs" and default file associations?

Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol
Default Programs - Set a Program's Default Associations
Default Programs - Remove a Listed Program

Some weird symbols appear on the right click menu.I already scanned with malwarebytes and avast. They detect nothing.PLEASE help me solve this problem. I am desperate. I will be very grateful to anyone who helps or at least trys to help.THANK YOU.
