I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Suddenly, all of my Open Office word processing documents converted into Microsoft Word documents. This literally happened overnight and I have no idea how it happened. The starter kit for Microsoft Office came already on my laptop but I never purchased any of the four programs in the suite. How can I convert them all back to Open Office docs without having to open them up in Word? (The Microsoft Office starter kit gives you something like 20 free "opens" for Microsoft Word but then you have to buy it.) Any help would be truly appreciated.

A:Solved: Open office files all turned into word docs! Help!

Hi Roy,

most likely what has happened is that Windows has somehow assigned ODT files to Word.

First, check whether the extensions of the files are still ODT. For this you need to switch off the option "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options of Windows Explorer (Tools, Folder Options, View). You can now see whether the files have a .ODT or a .DOC extension.

If they are still .ODT, do a right-click on one of them while holding the Shift key and choose "Open With...". Now you check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and locate "swriter" in the list above. If swriter is not there, you'll need to click on Browse and locate it on your hard disc, probably in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\program\

After doing this, .ODT files will always be opened by OpenOffice.org, and the icon will also change accordingly.

If the file extensions are actually .DOC, and you don't use Office, you can use the same trick to assign .DOC files to OpenOffice. Then when you modify one of these .DOC files, don't just Save them, but use "Save As" to save them as .ODT files.

All this is assuming you use Windows XP... I don't know how assigning file types works in Vista...

Hi,
I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!
Thanks!

A:Cannot Open Microsoft Office Files; Word Docs Appear as Symbols

Update--I'm starting to think that one of my antiviruses cleaned out the virus because nothing is showing up, but my documents are still corrupted.  I deleted my normal.dotm file, and also scanned my C Drive for errors so I could revert to my backup from November 18, but everything is still corrupted.  I would like to know if 1) I got the virus, or if it is still lying dormant in my system somewhere; 2) if my computer is safe to use; and 3) if there is any way to get my documents back!
Thanks.

I have installed MS Office Home and Student 2007 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium. Previously I used MS Works that came pre-installed any e-mail with a Word attachment just opened when I clicked it.
Now when I get e-mails with any Word attachments I am unable to open the attachments without first saving them to the desk top, then opening Word 2007, then opening the document from the Word 2007 menu.
Similarly with all my old documents I have to go through the same long winded procedure to open them
Is there a simple way to cure this??. I'm not a tech whizz but if the cure is simple I can give it a go

In order for me to open it, I 1st have to start Word, then go to "File" then "Open" Even though the documents are saved as .doc . the seem to have the word pad logo or icon beside the file name. Only the backup copy of the document automaticly made by word show the Word Logo or icon beside the file name and extention.

How do change it to open only in Word.

Select Open With

Select Word as the program to open with, and also select "always use this program..."

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)
Running:
HP dv6 Notebook Pc
Intel - i7 - 2630QM CPU @ 2.00Ghz

This happens with all word docs, not just ones created today. Also the files on the flash drive react the same way.

Which anti-virus do you have installed? Sounds like you'll need to disable your antivirus' Office plug in.

You may also be able to resolve by reinstalling the antivirus completely.

this tech-know-nuthin' desperately needs help from one of you technowizards...

it's taking over 2 minutes for any of my documents to open!

all was fine till i opened a document emailed from someone whose docs worked ok before... when i saved the latest one from that person to my desktop, it took forever to open and close... after that, all my own docs also took minutes to either open or close, as well...

i've:
deleted that doc and emptied the trash,
emptied my sent email file and trash stored on the puter,
dumped a huge number of files after saving them to a cd,
emptied the trash,
done a full norton scan and windoc repair 3x and an ad-aware scan/repair 3x,
restarted afterwards,
let it rest overnight,
but still have the prob...

my file folders and final draft program docs open as quickly as ever, but the windows docs take 2 minutes or more and it's driving me nuts!... and while they're trying to open, everything else either freezes or takes an age to work, as well...

another weird thing is that the doc page sent as an attachment that may have caused this didn't have a ruler showing and when i opened my own doc pages, the ruler had disappeared from all of them, too!... the only way i could get it back was to drag the ruler icon to my toolbar and click on it after opening the rulerless docs...

any suggestions?

I am running XP Pro/ Office 2003 on a Dell laptop with 2GB. System configuration has been stable (corporate machine) and have not made any huge changes lately. Several weeks ago Word documents began to take a minute to open, in the meantime the application from which they came (such an an Outlook email) freezes. Same holds true if I click on a URL link in an Outlook email- it takes a minute to display in the browser (Firefox current version). If I open a Word document from a Firefox download, FF will hang for the minute it takes to open.

My IT department has completely uninstalled Office, cleaned the registry, and reinstalled Office, but problems persist.

What else can I try to fix this issue?

Thank you very much for your help.

A:Word docs take 60 seconds to open

unfortunately, as it's a corporate machine, we can't really assist in that matter. You need to rely on your IT department to solve the issue.

One thing I would recommend is that you check the defragmentation status of the drive, and have your IT department use whatever application they use to clean out the temp files as well.

Hello all,

This stared when using a Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive but also happens on my notebook. Sometimes a document will open if I copy it to another location such as a desktop? I access files/folders, etc via winxp Explore. Some names are not long.

Sometimes if I copy a folder from one location to another, more documents will open?

Is this a software or hardware problem? First thought it was a problem with my Maxtor OneTouch 1. I purchased a Maxtor OneTouch III 500 USB 400/800 & now have problems with it.

Hi Gang,

I have a new Vista Premium OS that opens everything fast including Word 2003.
I installed new HP Printer drivers (got on CD from HP) for Vista.
Now Word program and the docs open very slowly, like 2 minutes instead of a few seconds.

So I guessing it has to do with the new printer drivers and something they did to Word or share with Word like fonts?

Do I need to reinstall Word or drivers or correct registry or ?

This is a home system, no server or network so printer is local.

Any thoughts?

thanks.

I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64, It's in English, but I have Sogou Pinyin installed and can display Chinese no problems. I have Chinese fonts in the fonts folder too.

If I write something in Chinese, I can save it, and reopen it in Wordpad/Notepad and I'm able to see the Chinese characters.

I find it hard to believe that ANY pre-saved Chinese document I open is corrupted.

Setting my system to Chinese isn't do-able, since I can't read Chinese.

Any ideas?

Often when I am opening documents in Word 2003, it takes ages for the system to respond 20-60 secs and when it does so it does it in a jerky fashion.
I have recently upped the RAM to 1 gig, so can't belive this is the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can you suggest what to do to do to fix it. it can be very irritating to sit and wait for the system to respond.

Thanks,

mercurius

All,

After using Office 2013 for the better part of two years - today I go to do a Quick Print (to my PDF Printer) on a Word attachment within a Outlook email and get this annoying message:

Office has detected a problem with this file. To help protect your computer - this file cannot be opened.

Then if I click on the Show Help button - I see this:

"The Office File Validation feature has blocked this file from opening as it may contain harmful content.
More information about this error message online."

Then I try another email and another - ALL give me the same message.

I have gone into the Trust Center settings in Word and Outlook and turned off everything I could find on Protected view, added all local drives as Trusted locations etc etc and NOTHING worked.

I do not see any references to Office File Validation and need to find a way to stop it.

I cannot find any way to print any Word doc to any printer - if it is an attachment within a email.

My gut feel is that this last Office Update pack (Sept 2016) via Windows Update -which I applied a few days ago - has now compromised my scene.

Anyone else come across this - with any way to shut this crap off?

VP

A:Outlook/Word 2013 - Cannot open ANY docs due to Protected View

Hi:

The normal workaround for trouble printing directly from an attachment or link would be to first save the document locally on the computer (e.g. desktop) and then print it.
That usually works when attempts to print just do nothing...

HOWEVER HOWEVER from the warnings you're seeing, it sure sounds as if, in this case, you may be dealing with a potentially malicious file.
Email attachments are a common means of ransomware transmission these days.
But it could contain a malicious macro distributing a range of malware.
As such, I do NOT suggest downloading or saving or opening or printing the document in question without more data.

Disabling security features and lowering Trust Center settings sounds like a dangerous strategy, until more information can be obtained.
Those security settings are in place to help protect you.

I'm also not quite clear of the scope of the issue. At first it sounded like you reported only a problem with "Quick Print" of a specific attachment. Then you said you "cannot find any way to print any Word doc to any printer'.

So, perhaps you could please clarify for us a bit?

Also, what happens if you use the workaround (save the document to the desktop and then try to print) using a KNOWN, SAFE document attachment (as opposed to the one(s) that is/are throwing up the security warning)??

Thanks,
MM

Here is a partial solution it would seem:

1. Run Malwarebytes Pro
2. reinstall Windows
3. find correct drivers because model number was wiped in the bios
4. open MS-Word docs with Wordpad
5. first line of open file in Wordpad has gibberish but text can be read afterwards

Again, it seems to me this is not encryption issue because the same garbage-gibberish appears across different ppt and word files when they are opened. I suspect only headers have been corrupted in data files.

Any luck with pdf files anyone?

Best,
Marc

In Xp I used to be able to add a little speaker icon onto a word file and when clicking on this speaker icon could hear a mp3 sound recording previously made in audacity...

Is it possible to easily do this now with vista cos I can't figure out how. I CAN add an mp3 file onto a word file, I can also click and play but this mp3 file has the title underneath and the mp3 icon design. How can i change the icon design to the speaker symbol and get rid of or hide the mp3 file name?

Thanks for any help

A:icons for mp3 files on word docs

Welcome
Not being into such areas myself, I must ask, something like this?
Insert a sound - Word - Microsoft Office
Although for an older version of Word, should still apply

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to write a .bat file that will save and close all open Word documents, then quit Word or terminate the Word process.

How in the world would I do that? I'm a complete novice at .bat files!

Also, could the .bat file be triggered only after Word has been unused/idle for a specified time?

I look forward to your responses!

Jay

A:.bat file to save and close all open Words docs, then quit Word

Hi,

Killing the word process wouldn't be too difficult but that would be on a schedule rather than x amount of idle minutes.
I don't believe a .bat file would be able to save any open workbooks though.

Are you able to provide some background on why this is needed and maybe there is an alternate method?

Regards,
Jamie

when I double click a TXT file or word doc file from my desktop or from a folder it takes a very long time to load

sometimes right clicking the file takes a long time to load the menu pop up

I have about 5 txt files on my desktop. I will click on one and it will take a while to load 10 seconds or more. these are docs with 15KB of info. not anything big

then I will close the file and then double click it again and it opens very fast
and then I can click any of the other files and they will load fast

until I have not opened them in a while and they will be slow again
same thing happens no matter what file I open

and then same thing happens for word docs.

the right click menu pop up being slow only happens every once and awhile now becuase I got ShellEx and turned some stuff off

this is really annoying and slows my work down big time

anyone have this issue or know how to fix it?

I am running SP2
the issue just started today
I have norton 2004 system works with anti virus
XP home addition

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

. o O (I was having the same problem with 2007, but I uninstalled it. I'll get 2003 working properly FIRST, then wrestle with 2007.)

I've done all I can so to set WM as my default, it says it's default, but when I try to open an email filed in docs, and I have WM set to be the default, the only thing that happens is WM which is already open pops up, but not the file I clicked on. I had to set WM back up after SP1 and I've done everything I could find on this board, but I'm totally stumped now. I've installed SetWinMailDefault, don't know for sure it went in, but I thank it did. What would happen if I used that again, or manually put it in the registry? Thanks for any help. Belle

A:WM will not open eml. files filed in docs

If you have a copy of "setwinmaildefault.reg" you can right-click on it and select "edit". But I notice that this registry edit is quite complicated so it would be very tedious to check all the entries or to do it manually. You can double click the reg file again. You can also post your question on the Windows Mail Tutorial Forum. I imagine the people over there are dealing with Windows Mail issues which is why they are there.

Do you happen to know of a way you can open existing Notepad files maximised?

I'm getting a bit irritated having to maximise these txt files all the time and wondered if you knew of a way of doing this? (I'm running XP).

BTW, I don't have a problem with new files as I amended the shortcut properties to open the program maximised but that doesn't help with existing ones....

Many thanks!

Paul

Greetings,

I am new to these forums, but it seems to me this was a good place to go for perplexing questions such as the one I am posing. Google FTW!

Anyway, I recently had a Western Digital hard drive crash due to an unstable connection to the PC. I managed to fiddle round enough with it to where I can connect it to get data from it, though I don't trust the connection to last long. Said connection failure resulted in my having to format the drive in order to have windows properly read it.

I've managed to get a lot of the iportant audio I had stored on the drive using software called GetDataBack. There were a few files thad appeared to have been recovered but that were silent. GetDataBack showed me file sizes which told me said files had ovbiously been broken somehow, though I had copies of these elsewhere so I wasn't too worried.

When it came to retrieving my documents and text files, however, I encountered a very strange thing. GDB shows that all the file sizes are correct (at least on the one's I compared to copies I had floating around) but when I go to copy them and view the on another drive, said files appear to have no text. The file size once on the drive shows me 0KB.

Why would GDB show me the correct file sizes but copy over the same file that appears to be completely void of data? Why would audio files be more in tact than simple .doc and .txt files? Is there any way I can repair/recover these files or are they really devoid of data even ... Read more

I have a folder of documents created on Word perfect X4 that I need to convert to Word 2003. I have Word 2007 but have found that some with older Word versions (before docx) have trouble opening them.

I tried the Word batch conversion utility in the program but the docs came out garbled. This would save me a lot of time.

thanks!

A:Need to batch convert Word perfect X4 docs to Word 2003

It is not the conversion that is the problem, you need to make sure that Word 2007 is set to Save As "Word 97-2003" documents to be the default.
