X1 Yoga OLED brightness issues (unable to adjust)

Q: X1 Yoga OLED brightness issues (unable to adjust)

Until now everything was working perfect. I did a driver update today, which includes the latest display driver, and now I am unable to adjust the brightness. I tried to uninstalled the display and monitor driver but nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. It looks like it was coming with the latest driver update from today. Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I've had my X1 Yoga for about two months now, running Windows 10 Enterprise Insider Preview 1607 (build 14915.1000).Prior to joining the Windows 10 Insider Preview program (it took about a week for it to update to the insider preview builds from the official builds), I had severe issues with the brightness control of my OLED screen. I could not turn the brightness up to the higher settings (90-100%), because the screen would become entirely black. Also, somewhere in the range of 75%-95% brightness, the screen would be completely blue, as if no other colors were displayed in the OLED panel. This was of course unusable. Coupled with the automatic display brightness adjustments it gave a really crappy experience, as the brightness could suddenly automatically be turned up really high (into the unusable blue-then-black range), unless the display was set to a really low brightness setting. On several occasions I thought the computer had locked up/died on me after disconnecting it from my OneLink+ dock, only to later realize that I could just lower the brightness to force the display back into actually showing something.  Sometime after getting the first Insider Preview builds, which was also accompanied by some Lenovo updates (unfortunately probably masking what is the real cause of this issue), I noticed I couldn't actually change the display brightness at all anymore. It's stuck! This issue persists, and I have been unable to change the disp... Read more

Hello everyone, I got my X1 Yoga 2nd gen a couple weeks ago and noticed some issues with the display: 1, When I scroll up and down in Chrome and OneNote, there is sometimes a line quite noticeable on the screen very similar to what you would see in a screen tear of a video game, except the line isn't straight. The shape is like this: +++++            +              +                 +++++++++++++++++++++++                                                                              +                                                                                 + It doesn't happen all the time. I haven't noticed a pattern, but it's frequent enough to be a bit annoying. Has anyone else had similar issues? Should I contact Lenovo to swap the screen? 2. The brightness changes quite randomly while I'm actively using the computer with stable ambient lighting. With the brightness change, the warmth / tone of the colours also changes. Hello there, I need help please! I can't fix the screen brightness. It appears to be stuck on full brightness which draws my battery life quickly and hurts my eyes during nights. The brightness button in the action center is missing, there is no brightness slide bar in the display setting nor in control panel, and brightness fn buttons in the keyboard are not working as well. When I click on the battery icon, there is a brightness button next to the battery saver button but also not working (not even clickable).I searched online and I tried:- updating/reinstalling/rolling back display drivers- resetting pc (reinstalling windows)- many other little repairs College is starting soon and I really need my battery life and I will be studying on my laptop in late hours so this brightness issue is a big trouble for me

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

For Windows 10's Power Options, I set "Do nothing" for "When I close the lid". Even though I set the display's brightness to 50% and disable "adaptive display brightness", every time I open the lid, the brightness of the display is max'ed as if it was set to 100%. I have to then adjust the brightness a bit to make it work. I have tried various versions of the graphics card driver (including 21.20.16.4505) as well as re-installing Lenovo Settings Dependency Package but none of these worked.

My 1st Gen X1 Yoga with OLED screen goes to 100% brightness after statup or resuming after sleep. Pressing the "lower brightness" (F5 ) key does nothing. Pressing the "increase brightness"(F6) key puts screen to 10% brightness. To me this indicates that Windows setting for brightness was correctly set to 0%, but the display is not following the brightness setting until I change brightness again using F6 key. I updated BIOS to 1.33 and disabled dinamic brighness in Windows and in Lenovo Vantage. Anyone here with same problem? Thanks!

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

I have the following issues regarding the OLED brightness When I change the display configuration, e.g. attach the yoga to a 2nd monitor via Dock, flip the notebook into tablet mode, change screen orientation, wake up from standby.... In half of all cases, the brightness is reset: It shows like 50% brightness, but the screen is turned up to 100% and I have to manually re-adjust brightness. Very annoying!OLED "power saving modes" (e.g. reducing brightness of the taskbar) aren't persistent: If I restart the device, If I change the display configuration (see above for examples) - the OLED power saving settings seem to get lost and I have to restart Lenovo Settings in order to make them work again. Very annoying as well!Using Windows 10 with most recent drivers supplied by lenovo companion. Happy to provide additional details.

I can't adjust brightness on my Thinkpad X1 Yoga. I've run all the latest driver updates, used lenovo companion and everything is up to date, including bios. No matter what I do the brightness will neither increase or decrease.

It's stuck on full brightness, so it's not too bad, and I'd be loathe to send it in for repair and lose a week or work to get it fixed. Is there anything anyone can suggest that might help software wise?

Thanks!

For months now my laptop has been logging me out after I just logged in to use it. Once I log back in after this I find that I can't adjust my brightness in any way. Whether it be through the device settings or by using the brightness F keys. There is also a strange square that shows up that often changes colors and location on my screen (2nd image). When i go into the device manager this is what I see (an indicator that something is wrong with the display adapters): I have tried uninstalling the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family and re-installing it and that fixes the problem temporarily, but when I shut off my computer and go to use it the next time the same problem persists. I've gone into the Lenovo Vantage and run Health and Support tests, but it doesn't detect anything. I've downloaded updates recommended for my system and nothing seems to work. This problem is really starting to irritate me and I would like to try and fix it before investing in a new laptop. This laptop is only 4 or 5 years old. I would greatly appreciate any other tips or advice!

Any help / tips on this? System fully updated.... I am not finding a pattern for it.... It happened once to me like five weeks ago, but not again. Suddenly happens every time after Lenovo BIOS update followed by two days ago the Windows 10 system update. So I am attributing it to it and to a BIOS vs. OS conflict of some sort. This is also because it does not seem to be a hardware problem... it can work [almost] perfeclty well for hours and without any screen alteration [flickering] and then just flicker the next day on start up / boot and will continue to flicker. And when works well, I move the screen and it does not alter ... does not flicker... really strange if it were due to a hardware problem. Anything to due with heating/cooling? unlikely, but eventually works with only a low brightness band and in these cases when screen working like that [without major flickering] it does not alter for hours. Thus when having been working for a certain period of time [without sleep], it does not flick(er)... I know there is another thread, but it says on low brightness..... and this happens in any possible screen resolution and brightness combination. All checked so far without any success.....  ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2ndProduct Number: 20JES16Q00BIOS: N1NET42W 1.29Microsoft Windows 10 Pro - 10.0.17134.1

hi nikunjpadhiar,

Welcome to the Forums.

When you installed the (Beema) AMD Driver, did you remove any previous traces of the AMD Display driver?

If not, can you try the following:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel (Icon Views) > Programs and Features and uninstall anything that relates to AMD Display Driver / AMD Control Center.and reboot. When finished, navigate to the Device Manager > Display Adapters and the driver should show a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

2. Install the (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and reboot. When done, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter from the Device Manager should now change to an AMD Radeon Display and check if you can now adjust the brgithness.

In addition, check this post by marcus34 as he was able to resolve the issue.

I am having this problem from past 3-4 days I am unable to adjust my laptop's brightness. The functions keys for brightness won't work. I also tried changing the power settings to high performance and balanced, that also doesn't changes the brightness.
I also tried manually adjusting the screen brightness. The slider moves but the brightness is not changing.

I am using IntelR (HD) Graphics family.
I tried changing it back to Microsoft basic display adapter but that also didn't help.

I got windows 8.1 installed from the factory itself and everything was working fine until past few days.

Any suggestions??

P.S. => I am using a Lenovo G50 series laptop

A:Unable to adjust brightness in my windows 8.1

First off, figure out whether or not your laptop has an ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) which will automatically adjust the brightness (if all goes well). Usually it won't override a manual setting, but it's kind of up to the developer which one takes precedence. As for the keys not working, you probably removed (or didn't install after a Windows reinstall) the helper software that controls these functions.

I'm not sure where to go from now, does anyone have any ideas to fix this?

Welcome to the Forums.
What happens when you try to adjust the brightness? Is there no setting? Setting grayed out? Or you change the setting but nothing happens?

If it changes for an instant, then reverts to what it was, adaptive brightness may be enabled.

I suddenly was unable to adjust the brightness on this 3-day-old laptop.  Moving the slider from zero to 100% didn't change the light. I've noticed, today, that I'm suddenly unable to adjust my screen brightness. I have read half a dozen threads reporting the same problem; I tried all the solutions therein (from updating the driver and reverting to the most basic one to manually changing power configurations) and nothing worked. Unlike the vast majority of users who had this problem, this hasn't happened following an update to windows 8.1 (which I did several months ago -- and the adjust was working fine after that).

This might give you a hint:

* As I try to adjust it using the fn key (as I had always done previously), brightness goes up or down just one level -- and that just 'cosmetically', as in fact nothing changes. The indicator gets stuck approximately in the middle of the bar, unable to reach the extremes.

* There is more: on power management, I chose the lowest possible level of brightness when working on battery, just to see what would happen. I then disconnected my laptop from main power, and... the brightness indicator did go down to the lowest level, YET brightness remained unaltered in fact.

Anyone, please??

In the past few days my laptop has been behaving oddly. At first it would not allow me to adjust the brightness, neither with the function keys nor the slider. This would happen after it awakened from sleep.
It also does not like to restart now. It hangs at the "Restarting" screen until I force it to turn off by holding the power button.
In, addition, the keyboard stopped functioning. This has only happened once, though.
I ran system file check from the command line. It found corrupted files, but was unable to fix them. I ran it again in "Safe Mode" and got the same results.
I tried rolling back the display adapter. This did not solve the problem either.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. I am running an x1 yoga (spec below)    stats I really like the machine, and everything is working very well - except for playing video files. Even when playing HD video, the screen-colour configuration seems to be doing strange things with black/grey areas, making everything look heavily pixelated and almost unrecognisable. It is fine with lighter colours:  but really problematic with darker scenes:  where there seems to be some kind of grey overlay of pixels. I presume this has something to do with the OLED screen? Please could someone advise? Is there a way to fix this issue by changing settings? Thanks for your help!

Hi Guys, Looking to consolidate the list of issues I have with my TP since updating to Win10 Fall Creators Update (1709) update. And I am looking for help in resolving the outstanding issues. I have gone through the common resolution methods on this official Lenovo site as well as from this collection of tips. Outstanding issues below. 1. Keyboard AUTO backlight setting is not working, light doesn't come on when its dark on its own.2. Auto screen brightness control is not working3. Screen rotation button is still greyed out in the sidebar as well as settings4. OLED colour profile settings had stopped working and disappeared. (But this fix worked)5. Intel SGX drivers were busted (finally updated on their own via Win10) Now for 1, 2 and 3, I think this is an integrated sensors issue and I have tried uninstalling the Intel Sensor Solution device drivers from Device Manager and then updated the drives through Lenovo Companion. Nothing changed.Windows Update later also installed an update called Intel Integrated Sensor Solution but these issues have not gone away. On a positive note, this Win10 update and the related updates to Synaptics touchpad drivers resolved the issue of the cooling fan being constantly being on (this forum attributed the issue to bad synaptics drivers). Anyone else facing the same issue related to sensors on this machine? As of 5 minutes ago, there were no new updates on LenovoCompanion or on Win10. Thanks

Beginning today, I opened my laptop from sleep and noticed the display was at its lowest brightness setting. I then tried to restart it to see if that would solve it, no luck. I did some googling and found out it could be a problem with the graphics driver. I then disabled it and enabled it. Now the brightness is at its max settings.

The function (FN) + F4, F5 (the keys to adjust the brightness settings) do nothing. The brightness status will show up on the screen and only change 1 or 2 notches.

I then realized I should have a way to adjust the brightness via the Power Settings in the Control Panel. I even confirmed this with a friend. I should have the sliders to adjust the brightness but I do not. It's very strange.
