Preferred Solution: My bitlocker drive is locked and windows wants me to enter the recovery key.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can anyone help me please. I am not very technical so no jargon please. I have a mini asus laptop and I have only had it for about 3 months. I tried to switch it on recently and it says 'enter recovery key to get going again' I didn't know I had a recovery key but I went onto another computer to micosoft search and I have my key number. When I enter it it says 'diagnosing' then it gives me options to either 'continue to windows 10' settings' restart' advanced settings' etc.
I have tried them all in turn but nothing works. It accepts my key number and then just says diagnosing and then goes back to the original screen saying 'enter key' again. I have entered the key several times and then chose a different option but non work. How can I get back into my laptop?
Any advice please? Thanks

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

A:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

Hello there

So I'm experiencing strange BitLocker behaviour. I have this PC at work. Clean Windows 8 x64 installation, 3 HDD (AHCI), no SSD.

After I set up BitLocker to encrypt "C" partition, it gave me pop-up window, that I should restart PC to test the BitLocker loader. So I clicked Yes. And after few seconds I got this:

JPG IMAGE - http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f2/22871d1370880908t-very-strange-bitlocker-enter-password-startup-screen-5jkippr.jpg

Mind, I'm still ABLE TO type password (i can't see sh** though), after I hit enter Windows IS booting, but it's really weird to see above picture instead of:

My GFX is OK, I tested it with games, benchmarks etc.
BitLocker simply cannot, for whatever reason, use my video card properly and displays those weird lines. After all - it hasn't loaded the whole Windows yet. Than again, it IS a bit strange, as Windows installers tend to work fine.

Any thoughts people?

Kind Regards

Bart

Hello Everyone,

I have an issue that started with a rush to encrypt my Windows 7 - HP Pavilion g6 Notebook with Bitlocker.

I started and completed the encryption process on my C drive.

Upon re-starting my computer, I was taken to the HP Recovery Manager page and unable to access my desktop. At
this point, I'm unable to access any of my files and I don't know how to process or fix this.

Things I've done to try to fix:

-After research, I've successfully unlocked and disabled Bitlocker with my recovery key and password through the
manage-bde commands.
-I've done a system checkup, and it appears there's an issue with the Hard Disk Short DST - failure.
-I've run a CHKDSK scan, and there are alot of files corrupt, but I have no details on what's wrong.

I suspect that by encrypting my drive, I also encrypted the operating system.

Can anyone give me advice on what I should do next to try and get my computer working back to normal? .

Thanks!!

Ok here is the deal. I had a new laptop that dual booted vista and linux. the vista partitioned was encrypted with bitlocker. I decide to give windows 7 a try so I repartition the drive in to one large volume, format and install windows 7. Everything worked perfectly. The problem is after about a week I realize there was some important files on the vista partition before I wiped everything out. I have found several data recovery programs the can recover files after a format, however they only show files that where on the linux partition. My guess is that the bitlocker encryption is preventing these tools from finding any of the vista files.

So the question is, Does anyone know of a application or company that can recover files from a bitlocker'ed drive after it has been formatted.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I encrypted my laptop system drive using Bitlocker. I remembered the password but forgot to backup the Recovery Key.

Usually, the system will be bootup without asking for the Bitlocker password or Recovery key. But one day, when booting up the sytem, the "BitLocker recovery" blue screen pop up to ask for Bitlocker Recovery Key.

I forgot to backup the Recovery Key. But I remembered the password. I also connected the harddisk of this laptop to other PC, and tried to unlock the hard disk using Bitlocker password. But there is no password option to unlock the hard disk.

Is it possible to unlock the drive using Bitlocker password?

Thank you.

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

A:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

The internal drive saved the key to my usb drive and by default, the external drive save it in my Documents folder. I also selected the auto-unlock option to prevent myself from having to key my password each time I used the drive. Due to performance issues after upgrading from Vista, I decided to reinstall Windows 7. I copied all of my data over to the external drive from the Documents folder, right clicked th external drive from the Computer folder and assumed by removing the password, which is allowed since the auto-unlock setting was enabled (not the best idea for those who might be considering this) and thought that Bitlocker was disabled from the external drive and was not aware that it had to be turned off from the Control Panel System and Security area. I proceeded to install Ubuntu which repartitioned the hard drive.I was curious to see if the new beta release fixed a kernel panic issue I was experiencing and it did not. I now went back to Windows 7 and started the installation. This repartitioned the drive again and everything was reinstalled. I go to plug in my external drive and now I'm prompted for the 48 digit recovery key. Ok, I pull out my jump drive to find that I don't have it. No, without the cert you cannot gain access to the drive, by design, and as expected behavior. If you could, there would not be a reason for the encryption to exist at all.Rating posts helps other users

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

A friend of mine was having some problems with their computer last week. The PC would randomly shut down (almost always around 4 pm although I am guessing that is just coincidence) and then when they turned it back on it would shut down again. This would happen a couple of times before they were able to boot up again. Finally, yesterday the PC wouldn't boot at all and it gave the C:/WINDOWS/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt. I tried to get into recovery console but it said it did not detect a hard drive. The Hard Drive is a SATA drive. SATA is enabled in BIOS. They are running XP Pro. A couple of weeks ago they upgraded the memory (adding another stick of 512) but I am not sure if they were having these problems before the memory upgrade or not. Anyways, my first question is, what can I do to have the drive be recognized again? I did some research and it mentioned having to install Third Party SATA drivers but since the drive was working before and we haven't done a clean install, I shouldn't have to load the drivers again, correct? Unless they got deleted/corrupt somehow. Well, let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi,

A couple of places to start:

> If you have any IDE hard drives hooked up, then disconnect them to get it going.

> Enter the BIOS setup menu and set everything back to default settings and try it.

> Make sure your drive detection in the Bios setup menu is set to AUTO

> Try clearing the CMOS ....... When and if you get it back up, try the recovery console again.

> The SATA drives are notorious for having loose cables (I have to use cable ties for some at times) and they do not fit into the drives very secure, so you need to make sure they are making good contact with the cable to the drive.

> Make sure the power cord is hooked in secure to the drive. Try another cable if this one does not do the job for you.

A couple of weeks ago I posed a question HERE regarding how to tell whether Windows 10 Mobile device storage was actually encrypted and if so where were the recovery keys stored. The good news, is that the device storage is indeed encrypted when turning 'Device Encryption' on. The bad news is that I still don't know where the recovery keys are stored and it can permanently lock you out of your device.

Earlier I reset a Lumia 630 running Windows 10 Mobile 10586.36 (Settings > System > About > Reset Phone) and when it restarted I was faced with a blue Bitlocker Recovery Key screen. The problem being, that it's a Desktop Bitlocker Recovery screen and as this is a mobile device it's completely useless as you can't do anything with it, it just locks you out of the device. Hard-resetting the phone (Volume Down and Power buttons) doesn't work either, it just reboots the device to the Bitlocker screen again.

All is not lost though, as it's possible to Flash the phone back to the original OS by running the 'Windows Device Recovery Tool'. When connecting the phone to the PC and running the Device Recovery Tool, the tool doesn't recognise the device though with it in it's Bitlocker Recovery state and just shows the Firmware and OS as 'Unknown'. So you then need to click on the 'My Device Was Not Detected' button and follow the on-screen prompts. After a few restarts, it will then flash the phone back to the original Windows 8 OS. I'm trying to help my daughter who is away at college with her XPS 13 laptop purchased June 2017.  It's running Windows 10 Home.  She took it out and opened it up after class and a blue screen with BitLocker looking for the recovery key was present.  From what I've read, bitlocker isn't available on the home version, only pro and enterprise.  She can't enter the recovery key since it was never turned on, even if it was available.  I told her it will probably need to be reformatted since it's looking for something that is not available.
Has anyone seen this before? Any recommendations?  She's taking it in to the tech center later today.
I forgot to add that when she goes to her Microsoft account and looks at her devices is shows Windows 10 home AND BitLocker ON, although it was never activated.  The "Get BitLocker recovery keys" link brings her to her Onedrive account.  She says she doesn't see the recovery key anywhere on her OneDrive account.
Thanks,

George

Have her go to the link and expand the how to get recovery keys.
She might be able to go to her Microsoft account and search for Recovery Key.
