Please help! I cannot change background, nothing shows up in recycle bin, etc....

Q: Please help! I cannot change background, nothing shows up in recycle bin, etc....

If anyone can help I would be so grateful. Hard disk ran out of space, deleted pictures and some programs (including sample pictures), reinstalled Windows XP. Finally bought a bigger hard drive. I can't change my background, it's just a plain color. Have tried to download pictures from internet and still won't change. Have tried Combo Fix and multiple other things that a moderator in malware told me to do...nothing works! Please help

Preferred Solution: Please help! I cannot change background, nothing shows up in recycle bin, etc....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I chose to Empty Recycle Bin, 2 popups appear on my screen. One(normal popup) asks if I want to delete the 2 items in it (but again when I open bin, it is empty!?)

When I click "Yes" to that question, the 2nd popup comes up say, "Can not delete Dd5: Access is denied".

What the heck do I have to do to empty my recycle bin of those unknown entities? And have the icon show it as empty again.

Until now I thought that I'd seen most of the Recycle Bin weirdness that people run into now and then ... the 'ol "Recycle Bin icon wont change after I empty the recycle bin etc...

This one is different yet ..... I look in the Recycle Bin it's empty .... I create a folder on the desktop and send it to the Recycle Bin and look in it ..... still empty

Yes I right clicked on the Recycle Bin and looked at the properties and the "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin Remove files immidiately when deleted" box is Unchecked so it ain't that ....

On the file dropdown in the Recycle Bin I have the "Do you wish to empty the Recycle Bin" option and whenever I say "go for it" it tells me are you sure that you want to delete the 32 files in the Recycle Bin? .... well no I don't thank you ... I just wanna see where they are hiding at before I do anything.

I've changed nothing in the REG .... but I will if someone can tell me what to change and where.

I'm at a loss here

I know the instructions say to uninstall Daemon tools. I did do this but it still showed up in one of the scans for some reason. CCleaner didn't show any lingering reg files so I am not sure why it is coming up.

I do have access to my Windows install disc. Thank you so much for all the help.

A:Recycle Bin Is Empty, Shows Full

Hello and Welcome to TSF

This used to be a sign of infection, you should read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

No use trying to assist if the system is infected, get it looked at first.

A:Empty recycle bin is grayed out and shows nothing that I've deleted?

Hello Jim,

If you open the Recycle Bin after you have deleted a file, is the file in the Recycle Bin?

If the file is gone from where you deleted it from, then it has been deleted. The question is if it's actually being put in the Recycle Bin, or is being permanently deleted instead.

This is a rather scary message which means, fortunately, nothing.

1. Correct Permissions issues if any.

HOWTO set permissions on a folder: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;308421

Permissions on the C:\Recycled directory may be too restrictive.

RESOLUTION
Administrators should have ownership of the Recycled directory. To take ownership of the directory, perform the following:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Using Windows Explorer, locate the directory and select Properties/Ownership.
3. Use the option to Take Ownership of the directory.
4. Restore default permissions to the directory with the permissions option.

Default permissions:
Administrators Full Control
Creator/Owner Full Control
Everyone Change
System Full Control

2. Now delete anything. Go to the recycle bin and empty it. Reboot. Go to the recycle bin and empty it again.

3. If that did not do the trick, remove the info2.dat file.

Hi.

I tried ipconfig/displaydns which showed porn sites. I cannot access IE unless I right-click on iexplore and run as administrator and Microsoft Fixit said my recycle bin was corrupted. I tried various things in this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic468110.html/ and have now followed the most recent instructions.

I could not run GMER as it would not give me a result of the scan, but can show the logs to DDS.

Woke up this morning and the computer rebooted over night, when I logged in my desktop picture is still there but all my desktop icons have disappeared.  Did a quick google search and tried ending the explorer task and running it and still nothing.
Rebooted the computer a couple times and still nothing.  Then figured I'd go look into the registry to see if anything weird was showing in there and nothing.

When I click on the computer it shows my hard-drive is using 100GB of space but when I click on the c drive to view the contents it says that the folder is empty.  Verified that files weren't hidden and even after doing the show hidden files it still
says it's empry.  Windows 7 seems to be operating fine even though it's showing nothing.  Computer boots up fine, the ie icons on the taskbar opens up fine, any command line commands work.

Tried running the sfc scannow and came back clean, chkdsk has come back with no problems either.  Kinda at a loss as I'd rather not reinstall windows and I can't even back up the files I have as they aren't showing up.  I do get the same thing
whether I boot into safe mode or not.

Notice the following mostly on my taskbar. The background image leaks and it looks like it doesn?t refresh properly. If I maximize or minimize a window it seems to fix itself. I seen it mostly on the taskbar but also on other parts of the screen.

I had Windows 7 installed on this computer several times and never seen that issue. It?s a Dell E521 with Intel G965 Integrated video. The main change from before to now is a new monitor. Before I had a crappy CRT monitor and now I have a 20" Compaq Q2009 monitor. Monitor is running at its native resolution of 1600 x 900. I only notice the issue on Windows 7, but not on Windows XP. I checked for both the latest monitor driver and video card driver, any ideas.

This shouldn't be that hard, did you use the same cable for the laptop as was originally used when the monitor was connected to the desktop? What happens if you shut down the monitor, shut down the computer, turn the monitor back on and then restart the computer using the original cable when this all worked?

When I log on to my laptop, my desktop icons and start bar are there, but they disappear after a couple of seconds, leaving only my background. I opened the Windows Task Manager with CTRL ATL DEL and clicked New Task, opened SpySweeper, and ran the sweep.

Something called a zenosearchassistant and some cookies came up.

I quarantined them and deleted them. I ran the sweep again and nothing came up. But my desktop is still not working correctly. So, I did some searching about the zenosearchassistant and from what I can tell it's just supposed to give me endless pop up ads or something, which I never had a problem with at all, so maybe that's not why my desktop is messed up. I've tried restarting a couple of times too, and it' still not working.

Any help is appreciated, thank you guys so much.

Then background picture appears as normal desktop. However, no icons, or recycle bin, or access to any windows functions. Mouse still moves, but only option is to push power button, which brings up option of restart or shutdown. Both result in same condition, running, but unable to access anything. Tried holding f8 at start, to "last good config" option, to same results. I am new to PC, started about 3 months ago. Any advice is appreciated.

It looks like you've picked up an infection.

Are you able to call up the Task Manager? You do that by pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys at the same time. If you're able to open it then click on "File" and select "New Task (Run...)" which will open a box that says "Create new task". Type in the following and then click OK.

I have a Word document that has a large TIF image placed in it. This TIF is flattened (ie, no layers or transparent areas) and has a white background. However, in Word 2002, it sometimes shows with a black background, making the text within the image unreadable. This doesn't happen on my computer, but it does happen on two of my colleagues computers.

I need to fix this not by changing anything on the users' computers, but by changing the document itself. This is because this document is going to be distributed to thousands of people, and we need to make sure it displays correctly for them without them having to tweak their computers. So, is there another image format that I can use instead of TIF that will not display with a black background but will print just as nicely as a TIF? Or, can I tweak the TIF to avoid this problem? It is a flattened TIF, RGB 16-bit color, 300 ppi, no image compression, interleaved pixels, IBM PC byte order.

Some background: I'm a graphic designer, and I created a flyer template in Adobe InDesign CS2. This flyer will be distributed to thousands of people through the National Center for Safe Routes to School so they can customize it to publicize their training courses. However, most people won't have InDesign. So, we came up with the idea to turn most of the flyer into an image, place it in Word, then lay text boxes over the top of the image that users can type their pieces of custom text into. I tried embedding multiple image ... Read more

When I go back to Google and search for something it sais on the top of the list "Your computer has bee hijacked due to porn advertising" and it shows a a picture with a link showing nudity. I see that my Norton internet security blocked an IP address from connecting to my computer. But other than that I thought my internet explorer is infected. So I go and just try to delete internet explorer. . . Now when I start up my computer nothing loads up, only my background. No Icons no nothing, it wont even let me right click the desktop, Ive already scan my whole computer for viruses and cleaned it up, I also uses search and Destroy, and fixed all the malware I had. About 30 minutes ago I also download and reinstalled Internet Explorer 7. Internet Explorer doesn't work, I type in explorer.exe and when i run it my start at the bottom of the screen shows up for 1 second and disappears. All applications display normally but the desktop area is ? white. Shortcut icons display normally even in the white area. I've tried changing display properties and color depth but nothing gets rid of this huge white area. Any ideas?

A:Desktop only shows one quarter of the background, three quarters white

That's very strange issue. And everything else is working normally? I mean BIOS, Windows start-up, different applications?
When you choose some picture as background I presume you see just a part of it, right?
Since when have you noticed this?

Hello BC,

{Running Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1}

I have a really irritating issue. I had a trojan back in AUgust and after removing it completely, my background pic stopped showing up. But it turns out the trojan wasn't completely removed. So after getting rid of it 100% for sure, only certain pics will show up as a background. My jpg pic of Gym Class Heroes wont show up but my jpg of Marilyn Monroe will. Also, thumbnails of pics wont show up in folders. On my desktop they will though. After a bit of searching, I found that lots of people have had a similar problem. Help me!

*New development*
I was trying to show my issue to someone and tried changing my background to Gym Class from Marilyn and back again... Marilyn wont show up now either!

This happens about nine out of ten times. Once I get to this point, I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and start any programs with the Run command, but I get no icons, no start menu, etc...just a blank screen. Virus scans are clean. The Windows logo key on my keyboard does not bring up the Start menu, either.

Safe Mode works fine, and System Restore does not fix the problem as far as I can tell. I get working internet no matter what...

It's a very new computer. It's worked perfectly for the first month or so. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

A:When I boot and log onto XP, background shows but no icons/start menu.

Try these two reg files:

#1

#2

Save them to your desktop and double click on them to merge them to your registry. Reboot.

Hope it helps.

I have had numerous issues with my system since I accidentally deleted a bunch of DLL and other files using a duplicate file eraser. I forgot to check the "protect" box and didn't realize this particular software showed ALL the files and not just the duplicates that were safe to remove.

I used my Win XP pro disk to repair in order to get up and running again.

My computer now starts up extremely slow and also takes forever to shut down. But one thing at a time.

Oddly - when it starts up - it will show the wallpaper on my desktop that was previously there, but without any icons. Then some software apparently loads and then the screen goes blank only to reappear as a solid color background. This is not extremely important to me from an appearance standpoint, but perhaps it might indicate some other underlying issue?

I also show that I have 2 Motorola wireless adapters. I had to reinstall the software after the crash. I don't know how to delete the unused one. I'm guessing the one without all of the info is the extra one. I happened to find this by running a scan by DAL.

I hate the thought that I might just have to save stuff, reformat and start over.

My system works, but it has numerous glitches. I downloaded an update to my Nvidia card. That took out my sound drivers. Once I discovered that and unistalled the update - my sounds returned.

Help! I need to get this back on track and I don't know where to start.

thanks,
Susie

Not much of a discussion but a bug report. When assigning icons to the recycle bin, they should switch from empty to full and back and they do if the icons you select are from a .dll file but they will not change from empty to full vica versa if the icons assigned are separate icon files not from an .exe or .dll.The reason is when icons are assigned and the value is writen to the registry, it forgets to add a comma and zero after the icon file name if the icon selected is independent of any other file.In the registry I found Icon_x.ico when it should be Icon_x.ico,0

Hi There,
Unfortunately I don't have lots of background computer knowledge and while running Windows 7 I have issues with the computer being super slow as well as extremely slow and intermittent Internet service. I noticed that when I open Task Manager there are multiple Internet Explorer windows running. I have run Microsoft Security Essentials scans every night and a full scan in Microsoft Safety Scanner and while these do usually find a "severe threat" and remove it the problem has not been solved after over a week of trying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I apologize in advance for any extra explaining you may have to do for me.
Thank you,
Melanie

Hi All,From the past few days my laptop is showing a spot on left corner of the display. It shows as pink when the background is white and sometimes it looks like there is no spot at all- like for example when the background is blue or something. I am attaching the photos as well The cursor is still visible at the back  as you can see as well. I sense it is some pixel issue and I am quite worried about it. Ideas please? Thanks in advance.

My Recycle Bin - XP Professional SP 3 - does not change from full to empty. The error message:

Cannot delete SCANCL: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

I tried these ways already, one, I went to regedit and deleted this key, {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, to see if the operating system would replace it and Recycle Bin. It got rid of Recycle Bin, but a fresh copy didn't appear on reboot, so I reinserted the key
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and I got back the unchangeable Recycle Bin.

I tried way two, I booted to safe mode and command prompt, to C:\, and removed the file protections, then took out Recycle Bin. It did not replace it with a copy without the problem.

The only problem is the unchanging Recycle Bin, items sent there appear there, and disappear when Recycle Bin is emptied, save the SCANCL problem.

I want a way to solve this short of reinstalling the O S.
If there is no solution, I can live with it. Mebbe.

SOLVED:

Check for a key called "NoRecycleFiles" in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If present, try setting the value to 0. Alternatively, delete it.

Hi,

Odd problem cropped up about a week ago. My boyfriend pointed out that the recycle bin has been renamed to "games (1)". I can't just rename it back either so I've no idea how to fix this. I did try going to the customize desktop feature from display>properties and selecting the restore default option but nothing happens so I'm not sure what else to try.

thanks,
Zelda ;)
