Boot missing, stuck at black screen with blinking white dash, and more

Q: Boot missing, stuck at black screen with blinking white dash, and more

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.
Help me !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

My computer didn't seem to have shut down completely. Although my memory is fuzzy about exactly what happened, I seem to recall that I came back to it, noted that it hadn't shut down completely as exptected (I had intended on shutting it down using windows|shut down in Windows 7), and (this is where I don't remember) either directed it to shut down, or to start.

I've seen some similar forums elsewhere. Some suggest a virus, and others a corrupted file. Also I ran a test many months ago that reported a graphics bios error, so I upgraded the NVDIA bios at that time.

Here is what is going on:

While the computer hangs, I see a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left.

Typing anything doesn't seem to have any effect (including ctl-alt-del, alt-tab, the windows key, and all function keys).
The one thing that does have an effect is tapping the computer's power button once. After about 20 seconds, it shuts down with nothing more appearing on the screen as it shuts down.

When I hit the power button again, I see the f2 setup / f12 boot menu options, then "resuming windows", then the black screen with the blinking cursor.

Hitting F2 on "booting"/"resuming" takes me to the CMOS Setup Utility screen. I tried changing the boot configuration to prioritize the DVD, where I put a Windows recovery CD, but the CD is never spun up before or after this step. Exiting this screen takes me back to "resuming windows" and then the blinking w... Read more

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an upgrade to windows 7 from vista. Yesterday my computer was really slow so I reset it to try and speed it up. I got passed the Vaio screen but then came the black screen with the blinking dash on the top right corner. The only thing I can enter is BIOS with F2 nothing else works. I can't enter safe mode or anything else. I've tried a few things, but nothing works.

1. Reseting default values in BIOS
2. Removing everything but internal Hard Drive in boot menu.

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Yes, this sounds like the traditional black screen issue, but it's different! This machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP. System won't boot. After Blue Dell BIOS splash screen with F2 & F12 options, it just goes black. There will ultimately be a white cursor in the upper left hand corner. I can edit BIOS with F2, I can get in to the boot menu with F12, but I can't do anything after that. I can even get in to the Safe Mode menu (F8), but it never boots.

I have tried to reinstall, but when I choose to boot from the CD drive it lets me select it, gives me the "press any key to boot from CD ROM . . ." message, but will then appear to lock up (even though I hear CD spinning up), then takes me to the screen with the blinking cursor.

I am not sure how to get out of this....

Thanks!

P.S. As I'm writing this I'm no longer getting the white blinking cursor in upper left....instead it's just completely blank, but everything else (F2, F12, F8) is the same....

Hello!

I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.

I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD.

Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.

I tried

bootrec /fixmbr
Success
bootrec /fixboot
Success
bootrec /rebuildbdc
Success
bootrec /scanos (Total identified Windows-installs: 0)

I also tried the "automatic" systemrepair (1st choice in the DVD menu, with no luck)

Can someone please help me?

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

I got my Radeon 6570 today and I installed it, but now Windows won't boot it just gives me the blinking white dash. So I removed the card, switched back to onboard from BIOS and it still didn't work. I tried a lot of other stuff but it didn't work so I reinstalled Windows with the graphics card removed (Hoping it would reinstall the drivers for the onboard video) it didn't. So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

Hi sherm12789 and welcome to TSF

Start up your computer by either tapping the F1, F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete keys to access the systems BIOS. For the exact information on what key to start up the System BIOS refer back to Original Manufacturer System Documentation.

After getting into the BIOS, look for a page that would have something like, eg. PC Health Screen or System Monitoring Page. When you have found a page similar to this post back what the BIOS says for your temperatures, voltages, and fan speeds.

My computer literacy is not the best but I'll try to explane the problem to the best of my ability. The last time I was on my computer when it was working it said it needed to update Adobe Reader after the update was done it had to restart and on the next boot up the problem first started. The eMachine logo will show up then after that all I see is a black screen with a white underscore. I tried to use system recovery disks that I bout from eMachines but when I get to eMachines recovery management and run the factory restore it will get to the last point where it says ''updating system'' get to 21% then jumps to 100% says recovery is finished opens the CD tray, It dose not say whether or not to take the CD out so I have left the last CD in and taken it out when it gives me the ten second window telling me it will reboot. F11 dose nothing at all, most forms say to tap F11 to try starting it in safe mode but that dose not work. I removed the bios battery then put it back in, I've removed one RAM card at a time thinking one might be no good no difference or error message upon removing the RAM card(s). I've been told I might need a new Windows 7 Home Premium CD but I can't afford one, even if I could I would not buy one just save the money for a real computer such as a Dell. I have a functional HP laptop that uses Windows 7 Home Premium, is there a way to transfer files from that computer onto a flash drive then lode them onto my eMachine?

A:Black screen with white blinking underscore after eMachine logo.

So there are no error messages? Just a blank screen with a blinking cursor? The means the computer is looking for a disk to boot from and can't find one.
The fact that the repair disk didn't work indicates the problem could be the hard drive itself, and the problem will be hard to diagnose if you can't even get the computer to boot into safe mode. Transfering the files from another machine to the eMachine won't work.
In fact, you may have to do the opposite -- remove the hard drive, hook it up to another computer (an external hard drive dock with a USB connection is best for this), transfer over your important files, then place the hard drive back in the eMachine and try to reinstall the operating system. Then copy over the files from the other computer to your eMachine.

Whenever my computer starts up, it is automatically directed to a blank, black screen save for a blinking white cursor on the top-middle of the screen. The Windows logo animation screen does not even appear, it just skips to the aforementioned black screen. I have so far waited about 12 hours for something to happen, and of course nothing happens. I am not redirected to Startup Repair or anywhere else after any reboot.

I recall that prior to this, while I was trying to organise some of my files, my computer suddenly decided to close all programs and shut down on its own for no conspicuous reason.
Once again, system restore points do not work, and I am unable to use Safe Mode or any of its variations, because the computer won't let me do so. Malwarebytes and Spybot are my antivirus programs installed, and the solution of reinstalling the OS itself is off-limits to me because I am unwilling to see the extinction of all of my personal stuff.

A:Windows 7 frozen black screen with white blinking cursor

I apologise, I just realised that I forgot to note that I am unable to provide a FRST.txt log for the computer this time because I am unable to get into Advanced Boot Options. No matter how quickly and repetitively I tap the F8 key, the black screen always manages to come first. I should also note that the white blinking cursor starts off from the top-left corner, then dashes to the top-middle after about a second passes. So consequently, I am unable to get into System Recovery Options and run any program through Command Prompt.

I still await any possible instructions. Again, I apologise if I sound impatient.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

Firstly: try to boot in Safe mode ( Press F8 during startup and select safemode) Does it boot normaly now?

Also: when pressing F8 during startup you could also get the option to "Repair your computer". Click that and go to startup repair.

I have a Dell Inspiron, not always but sometimes on start up it restarts to a black screen with a white cursor. Safe mode does work. I don't know why it sometimes does this or what makes it stop. I have tried just letting it try to load up for as long as an hour with no change, sometimes restarting has fixed it but sometimes (like now, it has done nothing no matter how many times I've tried).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

I picked up this exact HP notebook:
http://www.staples.com/HP-G71-447US-...duct-nr_866208
I've had it for 4 days.

All was fine until I started downloading some partition programs (for my EXHD) that didn't seem to like Windows 7. Sooner after closing some windows, the computer went to the dreaded "Blue screen" for about 2 seconds then to the "black screen with the blinking cursor" and its been stuck ever sing. Can't type while in the black screen(it beeps), I went ahead and searched for solutions to this everything but nothing works.

I tried: CTRL-ATL-DEL = just bring me back to the same screen. I did the "removal battery/plug, hold down the power button, etc" = nothing. F8 and/or anything F button doesn't work, just beeps..

I can, however, access the "startup menu" by pressing ESC but thats about it.

It didn't come with a install DVD of windows 7 so am kinda stuck bigtime. Hopefully you guys can help.

Thanks,
Harold

Welcome to SF!

Try a startup repair from the Windows DVD. If you don't have one, you can create one.

This is what did and my vista now does not start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Couple of days back at the time of booting my laptop I pluged in my iphone for charging. As it saw a new drive it started to scandisk it. I unplugged my iphone and restarted my computer as I was in a hurry. The scan was just taking a lot of time.
After that my vista is not starting up. It goes and get stuck on a blank screen with the cursor blinking on the top left corner.
As I have lost my original repair CD I made a recovery disk by downloading a vista recovery software for X64. Ran that and it did some thing and fixed the problem. But still I cannot boot my vista. It gets stuck on the same screen.
Using this disk, system restore and complete recovery is not working either.

Any one has any other tricks of making me pass the black screen. :-)

Thanks
Nicks

A:Vista stuck on black screen with blinking cursor

Hello nicks145,
Can you boot into safe mode ?.
If you can, open a command prompt and type sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, you may have to do this more than once if errors are found, until the system is clean.
Try this and post your results, good luck.

Hi All,

I currently have an issue that I was hoping some of you could help me out with.  After an update to my Windows 10 HP Pavilion desktop last evening, my computer will no longer enter Windows startup.  Instead, it gets stuck on a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left-hand corner.  I am able to access my UEFI BIOS.  From there, I ran the S.M.A.R.T. test and all the tests passed.  It seems that my hard drive is still functioning and connected but the Windows patch is causing issues.  I am currently unable to boot into safe mode because the computer gets stuck before the Windows boot page.  I have not performed a system backup recently, so I likely won't be able to restore the PC to an earlier state.

Many important files are stored on my computer and I don't want to lose them by re-performing a full Windows install.  I am thinking about running the system repair tool from the "System Recovery" portion of the BIOS.  Would this be a safe solution to try?  Is there a way I can repair this issue without deleting all the data stored on the computer?

Any other ideas?  I'd appreciate any help as soon as possible!

I was using my computer, when I got a blue screen error. It said something about some file (I'm thinking it was a system file) was corrupt. I'm assuming some sort of file one of my family members downloaded caused it, as they aren't very computer literate.

Of course, I turned off my computer and turned it back on, only for it to go to this black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner. I've googled this, and found a lot of people have this problem, but I can't seem to figure out how to fix it.

I've tried hitting F8, but the options to boot don't come up. Maybe I'm doing it wrong or something. I know about using a recovery CD, but my computer is a couple years old (it runs Windows XP) so I'm not sure where it is, or if I still have it at all. I've looked into the BIOS, and everything seems to be fine.

I really don't want to lose any of my data, and I'm fairly certain the hard drive is still working.

Can anyone help me? I'm really freaking out about this. Thanks.

BTW, it's a Dell Dimension E510.

A:Computer Stuck at Black Screen with Blinking Underscore

Unfortunately, it sound as if you might need to repair your boot file. You will need a Windows XP recovery CD, so you'll need to get/make one.

You could try using a system restore point, if your computer allows you to launch system recovery (or similar) without a CD (usually some function key on boot, when you see a bunch of options listed during start up).

A:Computer stuck on black screen (blinking /) Bad CD Drive?

Optical Read/Write Intermittent or Continuous Problems

Concerning your question about the CD/DVD drive:

Process of elimination:

The first thing to determine is whether this is related to hardware failure or a software problem.

Configure your system's Setup/BIOS/CMOS Setup to look to the optical drive before the hard disk as its boot order. If you do not know how to do this, you may have to consult your system's main board manual.

CMOS Setup/BIOS/Setup screen can be accessed by different methods depending on brand and model of your computer. Most common methods, depending on brand, are to press a certain key during POST (power-on self test) -- Del, F1, F2, F10, listed in the order of their commonality.

Some machines display an instruction on the screen during POST as to which key to press; but, that instruction appears usually for only a second or two and you have only that second or two to press that key.

After setting the boot order, place a known-good bootable disk into the optical drive and restart the system. If the system fails to boot to the optical disk, the drive, itself, has failed.

Bootable disk: A disk that contains the system boot files -- Windows Installation/Setup disk, system recovery disk, etc.

Known-good: Something that has been tested and its operational condition has been verified. In the case of a bootable disk, it has been tested on a working system and it is proven to work.

So when I receive the computer I make the replacement and I erase the HDD for using as a save HDD. After create an USB boot with Rufus, the screen displays  Error 1962, no operating system found . After many tries :Convert the SSD in GPT format and create an USB boot UEFI compatible (yes, I was able to use Gparted from live USB) ;Change thing in the BIOS : but there is no thing about Secure Boot/Legacy in the settings. But this recent tries don?t lead to boot on USB. Dear mods, I have noted a faint white dash (about 3 inches) in the middle of my P51 Screen which appeared a couple of days back. It looks somewhat like a stuck/dead pixel case. As possible solutions, I have tried the following : i. Battery Drain for 30 mins, and re-checkii. Disable/Enable the Graphic Card Provided that there are no easy solutions, I wish to know whether the replacement of screen of my product (which is still under warranty) will be covered or not? Regards,B.

Today I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.

I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.

I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm mot entirely sure if I used the right function.

I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause.

I am using windows 7 64 bit.

Mate first reseat all the sticks and clan the slots if it is an older machine

SLOTCLEANING

Now as for the slots to clean them use astrip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold apiece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s.

then run this if it does not function

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html this one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOSto optical (or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passesunless the errors come upstraight away. Takes a fair time to complete and some leave it runningovernight.

If you do get errors and have morethan one stick then you will need to test each one separately and maybe even inthe separate slots.

My computer was turning off every time i tried to turn it on. I ran my computer in safe mode and tried to restore to before the previous update. The computer then attempted to reboot as a process of the system restore. As it was turning back on the computer shut down again mid-process. After some research i concluded that the problem was that my CPU was overheating. I purchased thermal composite and applied it as instructed on the suppliers website. I attempted to reboot my computer but after the green-bars loading screen the computer screen became black with the cursor in the middle of the screen. I am sure this is due to the sudden shut down during the restoration process. I have tried running my computer in safe mode but i get the same result. After further research i tried the F8 advanced boot screen. The "Repair my Computer" option is not available.

I built this computer a year ago. I believe Windows is corrupted because at the start up loading screen with the small green bars the logo doesnt show on top.
