Mouse Not Working On XP SP 3

Q: Mouse Not Working On XP SP 3

Hi, when I startup XP the mouse appears on the screen but it refuses to budge. I searched for the P/S2 port in the Device manager but it is not there. I got a Com1 port mouse but that to will not work. When I enabled the mouse control from the num pad it works but with the mouse it just does not work. I have enebled the P/S2 port from Bios too.

I cannot find a pointing device at all in the system though the keyboard shows up there.

What could be the problem? Do I have to reinstall XP?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had this problem after a Win 10 update. The mouse stopped working both USB and Bluetooth. I tested a different mouse and that didn't work either. Touchpad worked fine. So I called Dell tech support and they suggested I uninstall Windows update and re-install the chipset drivers that they provided. I did both and mouse still didn't work. Then tech support suggested I do a Windows Restore. Again that did not solve the problem. Then they suggested I do a Windows reinstall. At this point I got annoyed since I have 30 programs that I use for my business and a total Win re-install is out of to question. I thought there must be another simpler way to solve this problem. So I did an online search and found a fix. It was a very simple problem and needed a very simple fix:
I was able to fix this problem by adding a missing MultiString value to this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Type: Multi String
Value Name: UpperFilters
Value: mouclass
An article that explains it in a very round-about way is here:

The Multi String Value Name: UpperFilters was missing so I added it and the mouse started working and everything is good to go!
I was very disappointed with the Dell support team I contacted. They gave me the run around for 3 days for such a sim... Read more

After about 1 minute the mouse scroll and keyboard stop working until I left click mouse. Tool bar on browser also greys out but comes back after left click. Video and sound also are choppy. Not sure if this is related. Flash keeps crashing. Any ideas whats wrong? Windows 7 pro. Asus desktop. This occurs on Firefox, Chrome and IE. This seemed to start after Microsoft update and Flash updates

A:Mouse scroll and keyboard stop working until left click of mouse

Hello mpmckee,

First run Antivirus, Malware, and Spyware scans. Remove anything the programs find.

Note: if you need some suggestions on which tools to use, let me know.

Afterwards, test functionally of mouse and keyboard.

If no change, run System Restore, choose a Restore point before the issue started.

Again test behavior of mouse and keyboard.

If the issue has been resolved, go ahead and reinstall windows Updates.

2) In the device manager it tells me I have two HID-compliant mouse drivers, location: "On USB Input Device" - I only have one USB input for my mouse. I tried disabling one of the drivers to see if it was a conflict problem. No luck.

Any ideas? The mouse is a "Wireless Optical Mouse M/N:SM-502C"

Hello, i happened to have a problem lately with mouse and mouse pointer. Yesterday i was playing a game and my pc suddenly started freezing and laging. So i hard reset him after that i boot into windows 8 and my mouse wasnt working at all. And pointer was no were to be seen either. Today i tried restoring pc but that dont help me. In bios and in advance startup options mouse is working. So i assume its in the windows. My specs are:
windows 8.1
gigabyte z77-hd3
intel core i5-3570k 3.8ghz
16 gb ram
Western digital 1TB HDD
nvidia geforce gtx 650 1GB
fsp 750W PSU
I tried everything except reinstalling windows (OS was installed week ago).

A:Mouse pointer dissapear-mouse not working

I have heard of stability issues on those Gigabyte motherboards where people are having those problems with their mice.

Is your BIOS up to date? maybe it will contain an update on the website for the BIOS that improves system stability.

Is this a PS2 Mouse, or a USB mouse. If a USB, disconnect and then reconnect. If its a USB mouse that is wireless, make sure the battery is good, and if you have another computer, do a test.

Also try to boot from your Windows Installation Media and see if your mouse shows there, could give it a try.

If freezing and lagging during gaming, then could be possible overheating. Do you have a program installed like HWmonitor checking your CPU and GPU thermals. Make sure they aren't getting to hot.

If problem continues to persist. I would start troubleshooting. If you have another computer. or spare hard disk that is SATA, try installing windows on that, and try to duplicate the issue, if it comes back, rule out the hard drive.

Next would be either the GPU, RAM, or Motherboard. You would have to stress test the GPU by using Furmark, or similar program, like MSI Kombuster. If GPU stress test passes, move on to Memory.

while computer is powered down, and PSU off or unplugged. remove and reseat the memory modules, making sure they are fully seated, Do memory diagnostics with memtestx86 or something similar, and do a few passes, If memory check passes, Its more than likely there is a problem with the motherboard.

Weird problem for sure. You... Read more

Recently I installed a Microsoft wireless mouse and it is working. But the wired mouse is now sporadic and at times freezes. I have unplugged the wireless mouse and rebooted several times. Even did a system restore.
Also an Excel spreadsheet stopped working with the wired mouse just freezing the screen completely. Even after rebooting, the Excel will open and eventually I will get a cross hair image. I have tried to update the driver on the wired mouse but it says I already have the most uptodate one. I am running Windows 10 64 bit. I scanned with Malware antimalware and it eliminated over 300 items. I am not sure what is going on.
I hope I don't have a virus. I have Norton 360 with my Comcast subscription but now I cannot even see it in my taskbar. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall but nothing happens in Control Panel when I try to uninstall.
I have a Dell XPS desktop. As I write the wired mouse is not functioning. If I unplug the mouse and put it back in the mouse port it works for a minute or so and then just dies. I don't even see the red light at the bottom of the mouse sometimes. I just unplugged the wired mouse and now it is working. So it is very odd behavior. I imagine by the time I post this the wired mouse will freeze again as has been the case. In the interim while I wait for a reply, I'll contact Comcast and see if they can help me with the Norton virus software issue.

Hello:
The mouse started to stray and stopped working in the middle of doing something, i.e. eBay, typing word and etc. which is very annoying and first of all, I lose all of the work done due to stopping of the mouse.

However, the mouse started working as if nothing wrong, once I restarted by 'force' restart ..... pushing the button in the middle of the PC. Otherwise, the PC is all fine and working OK.

I did apply Malwarebytes to combat the issue, however the issue does not resolve.

Any help on this would be truoly appreciated.

Thanks,

A:Mouse stopped working in the middle of working, i.e. eBay, typing word, etc.

Did you try a different mouse? If you still have the same problem with a new mouse, see if there are any drivers for the mouse from it's manufacturers web site.
Also try a Clean Boot, if that works, then add one startup item at a time till the mouse acts weird again, then you know that is the problematic program.

Before this round of trouble I discovered a problem with one of my graphics cards when they were in SLI with Blue screens and other nasty little things occuring when running Windows; I removed my secondary graphics card from the system to see if I could get a more stable OS, which I did.

I decided to test to see if the other graphics card running on it's own would lead to a stable system, however I was getting zeros on the VGA BIOS bootup screen and other problems before I even reached Windows Vista.

I did sucessfully boot into Vista and enter my password (using the keyboard) and move the mouse around, however once I had logged into my profile Vista began asking me if I wanted to install the drivers for the keyboard and mouse, I selected to update from the Internet and when Vista did not find any drivers for either device it disabled them.
Eventually I got both the keyboard and mouse functioning again by reinstalling Intellipoint pro and the Logitech setpoint.

While using the second graphics card I noted some distortions such as zeros appearing on the VGA BIOS screen during boot up, so I decided to switch out the graphics cards again, again this caused Vista to forget about my keyboard and mouse, I am however able to get onto Vista a combination of a cheap usb mouse I had laying around and the Vista on screen keyboard.

The fix I used previously (reinstalling of Intellipoint and Setpoint) has not works,I have also attempted to manually install the drivers through dev... Read more

Hey folks,

This is very frustrating and I am at my wits end. I have tried 5 different wireless mice and two wireless keyboards with nearly no success.

Hardware tried:

HP Wireless mouse. Returned to store.
Logitech mk320 mouse/keyboard combo
Logitech m325 (two different ones)
iHome Mouse (works best actually)
Logitech v220 wireless mouse (very old)
Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard 1000

With all of the mice I experience issues where the pointer disappears or seems stuck on elements on the screen, for example, the pointer seems to get stuck on the edges of windows. Pointer motion is erratic at best. With the mk320 and m325 mice the pointer does not stay in one place long enough along with the windows scroll up or down a line or two which leaves me with the pointing device version of "whack-a-mole" attempting to click on something. The v220 is a very old mouse and while it works is resolution is fairly low.

With the microsoft mouse it sometimes stops working and needs to be reset. The keyboard does the same and needs batteries removed and replaced. Sometimes that doesnt work and I need to reboot.

With the keyboard on the mk320 combo some keys don't work consistently and sometimes no keys work. Cycling power fixes the no keys issues, moving the keyboard away from the computer fixes the keys that don't work consistently otherwise.

This issue has persisted with windows 8.0 and 8.1 with two different motherboards. At no point has the wireless transceiver a... Read more

I?ve got a Vista computer running service pack 2
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU [email protected]
RAM 4.00 GB
32 bit operating system

Quite often the mouse stops working. It?s not the mouse itself that it is the problem as the same mouse works on other computers okay. It also makes no difference if it?s a wireless mouse, a USB mouse or a serial mouse.
Restarting the computer doesn?t fix the mouse problem. However if I turn off the computer unplug all connections, (mouse, monitor, speakers etc) reconnect them all again, turn back on the computer the mouse will work for another day or two.
What I?ve done is take it to a computer repair place who replaced the power supply; I?ve since taken it back to the same computer repair shop when the replacing of the power supply hasn?t worked. However they seem incapable of fixing this problem, because of course once they connect a mouse, monitor etc the mouse starts to work again.
Additional Information:
If I look on "Human Interface Devices" on that computer it only shows one device. It says that a Microsoft USB wheel mouse is working correctly, but the mouse in question on that computer is actually a serial mouse. None of the USB ports etc are showing up (?)

Anyone have any suggestions? (My computer knowledge is complete beginner) Maybe this is a hardware problem and perhaps I shouldn't be here...if so please forgive me and be kind

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Hi, i bought a Prestigio Wireless Racer Mouse yesterday (Model PJ-MSL3W) and put in the batteries that came with it (2XAA Alkaline batteries), then i plugged the receiver into my computer and everything worked fine for about 5 minutes. Then the mouse just stopped responding, the mouse cursor stopped moving. I put in other batteries, plugged the receiver back in and turned on the mouse, it worked for about 10 seconds then it just stopped responding again. After that i tried 3 other sets of batteries, did the same thing with all of them.
So my question is this, does a wireless mouse like the one i bought need some sort of special batteries or do i simply need to buy a pair of new batteries that was never used before? or is the device broken?

Hi all,

My mouse randomly freezes for short instants of time, then works again. I use a corded Logitech MX518 mouse through a USB port in WinXP. When it happens, the cursor freezes, the red light from underneath the mouse stops, and windows makes the usual "a USB device has been unplugged/plugged-in" sound. The frequency of the freezing is much higher when I play CounterStrike. If the mouse is left alone, it does not appear to ever freeze.

Rebooting seems to midly alleviate the problem, but very temporarily. I've tried other USB ports to no avail and I have a 420 watt power supply. When I use the PS2 adapter, the frequency of the freezing is considerably lower, but if it does go out with a PS2 I'm pretty much screwed as Windows will not re-detect my mouse. I use default drivers, not Logitechs, but I did have this same problem ages ago with my Microsoft IntellMouse 3.0. If anyone has a similar problem, please mention it and the things you tried, successful or not. Thanks for you help.

Take it easy,
Justin

I have Windows XP Home SP2 on an HP Pavilion desktop. My web searching skills are improving, but sometimes I just can't seem to find what I am looking for. My problem: Once or twice a month, after bringing my PC out of standby, the mouse has stopped working. (Logitech MX1000 wireless laser mouse.) I've tried re-installing, updating drivers, etc.; nothing has worked. The only solution I have found is to press the Windows key on the keyboard and navigate my way to a re-boot using the arrow keys. That works, but I am wondering if I could just find a way to shut down and re-start the mouse program only (KEM.exe, I believe), if that would work. If it did, it would surely be much faster than re-booting the entire PC. In fact, I happen to have a Microsoft keyboard with several shortcut keys that I do not use. It would be really neat if it were possible to program a couple of these to stop and start the mouse program. Could even just one key be set up to stop AND restart the mouse program? These are all just thoughts; my first goal is to find out if re-starting the mouse program can be done at all using only the keyboard. Thank you to all who take the time to reply.

A:Working Without A Mouse

One of the things I liked about Windows 3.11 (eek!) was the keyboard commands. Microsoft has wisely kept keyboard commands, and even added a few.

You could try this. I'm not familiar with your mouse so I'm not sure it'll work, but it'll allow you to close the program and then manualy activate it.

Press <CTRL><ALT><DEL> to bring up the Windows Task Manager (or, alternatively, <CRTL><SHIFT><ESC>)

Use the <TAB> and arrow keys to go to the "Processes" tab.

Use the <TAB> and arrow keys to highlight the KEM.exe process.

Press Delete to end the process and then <ENTER> to confirm.

Press <ALT><F4> to close the Task Manager.

Press the <Windows key><E> (the letter "e", that is) to open Windows Explorer.

Use the <TAB> and arrows keys to navigate to the KEM.exe program file (you may want to make a shortcut in an easily accessible location) and press <ENTER> to start it.

A:Mouse not working.

To allow temporary control with a mouse, I suggest to plug in either the USB mouse into a PS2 adapter type plug, or just use a regular old style PS2 type mouse, and then re-boot, and the system should detect it. Then you can go into the Device Manager to check on the driver for your Logitech USB mouse and keyboard, which may need to be updated or re-installed. Also there are some settings in the BIOS to enable USB.

When I got home I booted up the computer and the mouse is not being recognized at the windows log on screen. I've swapped another mouse in and the same non responsive mouse occurs. When I go into bios the keyboard is recognized and I can navigate in there. However at the windows log on screen I can't use my keyboard to log on to windows.

So my question is two fold.

1. How do I log on to windows 7 using only a keyboard?

2. What would cause a working mouse to stop being recognized when the computer was off all day? Any help will be appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind about log on using only keyboard. Keyboard is not being recognized by windows 7 either at log on screen. However it is recognized in bios and selecting between safe mode / normal start up.

Just press Space button at the login screen.

Hi, really could use your help. On startup mouse will not work. It's a PS2 generic mouse with wheel that has been working in the past. I tried a different mouse and it still doesn't work. Rebooting does not help. Did a system restore and mouse worked for 10 or 15 minutes then stopped, frozen. Using tab and other keys I managed to get into driver screen. There was no mouse driver shown, empty. Trouble shooting said no driver present. Later some how it started to work long enough to down load a mouse drive with wheel from MS. It again worked for 10-15 minutes and stopped. It starts to fail by first having jerky motion, freezes, un freezes and the stops completly. Again, got into drive screen and mouse driver was gone...empty. Ran a disc clean-up, defrag, spyware and antivirus with no help. I'm a novice at this so any help would be appriecated. This is a used computer someone gave me 2years ago and I don't have XP CD's. Also, SP2 is installed. Please, when responding, don't use any abbreviations or mid-high level terms. I'm a novice, keep it simple. Thanks in advance.

Welcome! Somebody correct me, but I think PS2 mouses are old, old and require an adapter to plug into the right place. I remember having to toss a perfectly good mouse when I upgraded my machine (hard and software); The new ones don't have a ball, they use laser light and are sooo nice; and they have a wheel so you can scroll down a page without having to click and hold. I got a Logitech from BigLots for $8 when they are $28 everywhere else.

I think I read somewhere a condition when a mouse won't work in Safe Mode. Also, was it plugged in when you did your system restore? It should have been, but it sounds like you have given it every opportunity to get a driver; cannot imagine why it does not work, except its not plugged into the same place it was before you did the restore? Or you didn't put the adapter in and plugged it somewhere else? Or there's a short in the cord?

Mouses with a ball do get dirty, and you can sort of clean it, maybe use the vacuum? Why don't you do a search on PS2 mouse and see what you can learn about them. Also, if you go to start - my computer - control panel - system - device manager - hardware you can copy and paste your machine description into Notepad and then fill in some of the blanks describing your machine on your intro sheet.

I hope you don't think I'm asking dumb questions; I started a topic "No sound after system restore" that's getting full of boo-boo stories about plugs and swit... Read more

Hi. I have a Acer Aspire E17 with a precision touchpad. The touchpad works, but I prefer the mouse. Sometimes when I am using the mouse I hear a strange sound then it stops working. It only lasts for about 10 seconds then the sound returns and the mouse works again. Can anyone pinpoint what the issue is. should I contact Acer? Any assistance will be helpful. Thank you. deanie44

Advice was offered the same day.
However you never responded

I fully appreciate there are many reasons why you may not have had chance to respond, but I hope you do not mind me raising the matter with you before I spend time helping on the mouse issue.

There is a bit to this but basically any mouse I buy does not work with my computer. What happened was I moved my computer from one wall to another, but am using the same socket. The mouse I was using started randomly disconnecting from from the computer but then immediately reconnecting. So I decided to see if it was the usb port and tried it in all my other ones, and it had the same problem. So I figure its a problem with the mouse and I use a temporary mouse that the scroll wheel doesn't work. This mouse has no problems working in any of the usb slots. So then I buy a new wired mouse. This one won't work at all. Figure it might be defective, bring it back and buy a logitech M510 wireless mouse. This one will not work also. It works on all the other computers in my house except for mine. I've tried it in every usb slot. I have tons of other stuff plugged into the USB slots that work no problem. No idea what is wrong, anyone have any ideas?

A:Mouse Not Working

did you remove the plugs from the back of the box before moving it

check all plugs and cards are secure inside and out

uninstall the mouse from the device manager and reboot

see if it works ok with windows generic support

if it does install the drivers and software for the mouse and see if it continues to be ok

check the bios to see if the wired port is enabled

i have not been able to delete the ps2 from reloading, could this be conflicting with a new mouse driver (intellimouse elplorer wireless) newest driver installed, does not work...uninstalled then reinstalll. several things tried...still loading the ps/2 mouse. I am using a laptop, touch pad works fine...wireless mouse not moving, lights on etc. said driver is sinstalled correctly, removed and when reboot loads the ps/2 again?
not sure what to do next, restored. tec. tried may things, might ahve mad it worse, but touch pad works,

A:mouse not working

The Microsoft Explorer mouse (the Blue Track version) is not an Intellimouse. Make sure you select the Explorer mouse when you install the software (or change it in the settings and reboot). Neither mouse uses PS/2. Both are USB mice. If there is a conflict, it's with your USB and PS/2. It has nothing to do with the mouse.

Try uninstalling the software and just use the mouse. Windows 98 and up already fully support the mouse and don't need the additional software.

Ps/2 mouse not detected at startup. Yes, mouse is plugged in. "Add new hardware" does not find any new mouse. I can add the mouse myself in "Add new hardware", but mouse still not working. Device manager shows mouse with exclamation point icon. I removed the mouse in device mgr and restarted, still no mouse detected. Any suggestions?

Your mouse is not connected to an adapter is it?

Have you tried a different mouse?

Do you have a serial mouse you can try? The PS/2 mouse port may be bad.

I was using a USB mouse and it suddenly stopped working one day. I restarted the computer but then the keyboard didn't work. After a few more restarts, the keyboard worked fine but the mouse wouldn't work.

I've tried all the USB ports but the mouse doesn't work. I know there isn't anything wrong with them because I've used other USB devices fine. I've also tried other mice but none of them worked either. The mouse shows up in the device manager as working perfectly fine but yeah, it doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:No mouse working

Try removing the mouse in Device Manager, then restart your computer. It should redetect and reinstall it.
