MC7354 on T520

Q: MC7354 on T520

I cannot get the MC7354 on the Thinkpad T520 to work. It is constantly complaining that the Hardware switch is off when this laptop does not have a WWAN hardware switch. I also have a MC7700 that is doing the exact same thing. I can't get either of these cards to work simply cause I can't get them to actually turn on in windows.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am looking at replacements for my T520 running Win 7 Pro, since support ends. I find adverts for refurb T520s running Win 10 selling for 500-700 USD.!! I have read the posts on this forum noting the many problems updating the T520 to Win 10, and everything I find says this model doesn't support Win 10. What gives? The only reason I would buy a new laptop is because of the Win 7 Pro EOS. The Tx20 is the last series to have a "real" keyboard, so is there new info on this?

We are having an issue where a user would connect to another Thin Client that already has a Citrix session open and lock up the termi al that the session was pulled from. For example if i have a sitrix session runnnig on the T520 and i login to my laptop and launch another Citrix session, the session is pulled from the thin client to my laptop but the T520 is now frozen on the screen it was on before i logged into my laptop. The only way to get the T520 back again is to reboot. Its like it doesnt know the session has ended on it?? Is there any settings i can change to stop this behaviour? Thanks in advance

I'm having trouble flashing the BIOS on a T520 using the Windows flashing package. It keeps blue-screen-ing, so I downloaded the CD image, thinking I could use Etcher or Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. Both of these programs balk at the ISO, however, claiming that it is not bootable. Etcher allowed me to put it on a USB flash drive anyway, but the system won't boot from it. I'm all for burning the image to CD except I haven't had blank CD-Rs lying around in ages. I'm sure I can find one somewhere, but in the meantime is there any way to make this image work on a USB flash drive?

Hi all. I have ThinkPad T520, and I wanted a USB 3.0 port. I found out that there is a dock station 4338-35 which has one. I was naive enough to believe that the docking station has its own USB 3.0 controller, so I've bought it. So yep, now I have lots of USB 2.0 ports, and no USB 3.0 port, because my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 controller. Awful sad. How naive. Let me be a bit more naive and ask: is it possible to upgrade T520 somehow, and get USB 3.0 controller on it? Or, is USB controller built into the chipset so it's not possible? Thanks.

Hello all, I recently purchased a ThinkPad T520 used, and I would like to enable the WWAN Feature for work purposes. To that end the T520 product that I purchased is the 4240-49U... I also purchased the "right (?)" WWAN card which is supposedly the GOBI3000 card, however upon install and system startup the laptop provides the 1802 system code about an unauthorized network expresscard. I checked the IMEI number of the card that I purchased online and it is reported to be the Novatel GOBI3000 instead of the Sierra Wireless GOBI 3000 that is listed as the approved card for work.... My query is this: 1) How do I verify if the card that I purchased is the right one based on the various numbers that are on the different stickers on the card? 2) Can I use the Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC7455 M2M Module in my ThinkPad T520 laptop without the laptop stopping during startup following install?

Troubleshooting Thinkpad audio - You have described a hardware problem with the T520. Download the hardware manual from Lenovo and determine if the headphone jack is part of a replaceable assembly and replace it if so. If the headphone jack is part of the system board the problem is more complicate to repair. You can go to Lenovo's site, plug in the full model number, like 5170-339, and locate the hardware manual--Lenovo's forum is the best place for help with a ThinkPad.

My T520 has started to exhibit a very weird behaviour: after a few minutes turned on it just suddenly restarts. After that sometimes it goes up correctly but most of the times the power button turns on for 0.5 seconds and then turns off again and it turns on again after 3 seconds and turns off after 0.5 seconds never booting up. I have to remove all battery and ac power and wait a bit to turn it on. Sometimes it stays on for a few minutes, sometimes for 1 hour...  The restart seems to be hardware related because I can also get the restarts when I was browsing the BIOS normally, so it doesn't seem to be software, windows or virus related. 2 months ago I opened open the laptop and changed the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU and temperatures lowered down quite a lot. 1 month ago the fingerprint reader stopped working so I opened the laptop again to disconnect it.  I tried only using battery power and it's the same. I tried removing the battery and only using A/C power and it's the same. I ran lenovo memory tests and it came back OK. Right now I'm lost on what can I try or what can be wrong with this. Any tips what may be wrong?  should I change the motherboard or cpu or what?

I have a T520. It has a SSD which I upgrded to while it still had Windows 7 Pro. Recently I upgraded to Win 10 Pro. My question is: I know that my BIOS version is not the latest. It's probably pretty old. I never upgraded BIOS after buying this laptop. When I go to Lenovo support site now, i do NOT see a BIOS version listed under Win 10 for T520. All of the BIOS updates are for Win 7 and older OS. Does this mean I can never update the BIOS anymore? I do not have any problems with the T520, it's running fine, but just was curious as to why Lenovo doesn't have a BIOS update for Win 10 listed under their T520 support page. If anyone can shed any light on this, i;d appreciate it. I've removed the i5 processor in a couple of T510 and 520 laptops and installed i7-640M or i7-2640M processors. Recently I installed an i7-2960XM which performed nicely. One problem though. I had some suspicions that this may not be fully compatible as it may create too much heat. With this in mind after I installed this processor I closely monitored the temperature and found that most of the time it remained between 115 to 165 ...... until I began loading down applications. The temp would soar up to near 200 degrees but would dwell shortly in the 175 range then drop down to 160 or 140.  Since then I've removed this cpu and will most likely go with the i7-2640M. The big question is wold the much faster i7-2960XM be compatible? I'm not fully convinced the program (Advanced System Care) is correctly monitoring the temperature. However I dare not risk damaging my system if this system is overheating. The performance increase of the faster cpu is very significant. Do I dare risk going faster?

This is the 3rd time I've attempted a reinstall of Windows 7 x64 Pro on my T520 laptop with the same problem. Once the install is complete, there's absolutely NO support for a network connection - either LAN or WiFi.

I've tried everything possible - downloading all the various appropriate network drivers and trying each one, installing the Lenovo Access Connections software, connecting with a wired cable directly to the LAN, checking the BIOS to see if WiFi adapter is disabled (doesn't give this option at all).

I'm stumped and sitting here with a laptop that's pretty much useless unless I can figure this out. Previously, I've had to take it in and pay for a fix, but this is now getting silly. It was never a problem before. I've installed Windows operating systems dozens of times before and as long as I had the appropriate hardware and working network to connect to, the installation process would work just fine.

Any help that could be offered would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

Does the WiFi card show up in Device Manager or as an Uknown Device at all?   Have you updated the Chipset driver?      If it does not show up in Device Manager at all, then it is most likey hardware related, if it shows up as unknown, it is most likely a driver issue.

The FP facility on my new T520 does not work. Sometimes it allows FP registration but, usually this fails. Very occasionally it will allow login (twice in 3 weeks!) but there is no apparent pattern to this behavior. Today it is telling me that fingerprints have already been registered, even though all were deleted prior to yet another attempt to get it to work. Lenoro technical support has tried to fix the problem remotely but without success. Experience suggests that the problem is not hardware, although Lenovo support is suggesting I return the machine for FP reader replacement. That will be a real pain. My OS is Windows 7 Pro and I have already tried an earlier version of the FP software, and reinstalling the latest version (several times). The indicator lights on the FP scanner appear to be operating correctly and the device is shown as working properly in Windows Device Manager Does anybody have any suggestions as to the likely cause of the problem?  Thanks in hope!

I have a T520. Three years ago (2015), I set up a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu so that my wife could use the Linux side for her classwork, and the Windows side for gaming. She no longer needs the Ubuntu side, and we want the entire hard drive to be used up by Windows 7.She deleted the Ubuntu partition using the Windows Disk Management tool. This caused the computer to stop booting properly, leading us to what seemed like a terminal that said something like "grub rescue". We resolved this using the second option in the below link (using boot-repair).https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-RepairNow, Windows 7 will boot, and the partition that used to have Ubuntu is listed as Free Space in the Disk Management tool. We cannot extend the Windows 7 partition because the recovery partition is between it and the Free Space. This brings me to the issue: I would like to reinstall Windows 7 and take up all of the available space, no Ubuntu.Several sites list something like "press this button during startup to load Rescue and Recovery." Hi, Given the issues I have with an incomplete Win 10 upgrade, I'm considering a factory reset to the restore image, using the Lenovo_Recovery partition of my T520 laptop, which contains a full image.  However, due to some manipulations in the past I don't remember, it appears that the Lenovo_Recovery partition isn't marked as 'Recovery' while an empty raw partition is.See picture here below (fyi: the C: drive now hosts a Windows 10 partition).    When I start/reboot the laptop while pressing the Thinkvantage blue button (or pressing F1 at boot), I don't have the option to select any Restore & Recovery process or partition. Is there something I can fix in some way in order to apply the factory reset ?  I can provide a directory listing for those drives if it can help. Thanks for your advice, hints and tips!Paul

Okay the subject is pretty self-explanatory, when I try to shutdown my computer via windows shutdown the computer restarts itself. Also whenever I plug in the AC adapter the computer always turns on automatically. If I unplug the ac adapter and pull the battery yes it will not restart obviously, however after plugging the battery back in sometimes the computer will not turn on unless I plug in the ac adapter at which point the computer automatically turns on and the battery is always recongized. I have edited registry keys, changed power options, disabled ac adapter power on settings in the bios as well as updated to the latest bios and set to default configuration. I have reinstalled windows 10 and ran thinkvantage system update to get lenovo drivers and NOTHING as caused this issue to go away. Does anyone have any ideas? If this is failed hardware what could possibly cause this? In case it was questioned once the computer is on it operates perfectly, but as a laptop its kind of worthless if I can't rely on the battery power only on the go. FYI: Yes I have tried in safe mode and shutdown still restarts the computer.

Hello, I have a T520 Thinkpad with an i5-2520M processor and would like to install an i7. The i5 is the 8th gen dual core and hopefully I can speed this laptop up with the i7. This should take a g2 socket if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone have a recommendation?

You can install an i7 but it must be a Sandy Bridge CPU (i7-2XXXM) to work with the chipset.  You should use one that was supported initially by the BIOS: (i7-2620M,  i7-2630QM,  i7-2670QM,  i7-2720QM,  i7-2760QM,  i7-2820QM,  i7-2860QM,  i7-2920XM or   i7-2960QM)

Note that the last 2 processors are 55W TDP (thermal design power) and they were only sold on W520 models.  They normally take a different (larger) fan and the W520 fan will not mount correctly on your machine.  If you try to use those CPUs on your T520 you may overheat.  I don't know if the power circuitry on the T520 is the same as the W520 so there may be other problems.
