I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running an "Anytime Upgrade" version of Windows 7 Professional. I have since discovered that sysprep does not function (or is disabled) on "Anytime Upgrade" versions of Windows 7. In other words, if I had purchased a physical
copy of Windows 7 professional then sysprep would be available. Since I did not, sysprep is not available.

Question: If I purchased a full retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate and upgraded my current version of Windows 7 Professional using that DVD could I then regain a working sysprep feature on my laptop?

Thank you in advance. I would upgrade to Windows 10, but my graphics card is not supported by Windows 10. I receive an error from Windows 10 Upgrade .... "Windows 10 is not compatible with your graphics card".

Any workarounds or advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

I was updating my operating system Windows XP Pro SP2 on microsoft updates. After the 7 updates downloaded, it starts installation automatically....unfortunately my system crashed at the same time. Now Windows is not starting when I turn on my computer. I was considering a system restore...but Windows doesnt start even in safe mode...nothing is loading at all...a file must be corrupt or damage in the boot sequence so Windows cannot start. I cannot boot from the Windows CD and proceed to repair...I dont have the CD...operating system was already on the used PC.

So now I want to buy Windows XP SP2 legal and install it on my PC so it will overwrite my illegal version. I want to know which one is more suitable...Full retail version or OEM version...I dont know the difference ...

Thank you

Recently I saw a posting about digital river offering 29.99 for anyone with a student email address. You had to go to the website and choose which version and whether or not you wanted the 64bit or 32 bit upgrade. I placed the order and then called Microsoft Store to cancel my previous preorder. When I told they why the said they can offer me the full retail version at the same price. I signed up and cancelled my order with digital river.

Here is what you do:
1. Make sure you have a valid email address with .edu
2. Make sure you have your student ID ready.
3. Call 1-877-696-7786
4. Tell them you want to purchase the full retail version of either Home Premium of Professional. Why anyone would not choose Pro is beyond me.

For an extra $5 you can purchase the disk otherwise it is a digital download.

Enjoy a full retail version of W7 for only 30 bucks!

what's the difference with an oem with a full retail version? are they the same and how do you differentiate which is which?

A:what's the difference with an oem with a full retail version?

Most time nothing other than the packaging and bundled stuff....and sometimes the warrenty is less or there is no tech support, but normally it is the same item without the extra packaging. Most retailers (newegg etc.) will id whether or not the item is retail or oem. For example XP costs around $300+ retail.....the oem is $139 but MS will offer little or no tech support for an oem version and will charge you more for a replacement disk if it is lost or damaged, much the same for components

Okay, here's another one:

I'm coming across something called 'system builder' versions of win 7. I'm trying to figure out where or if I can get win 7 home premium that I can move from one computer at a time to another if necessary. Can anyone help me? What are 'system builder' versions. Is there a 'regular' version that I can buy like anyone else and install it on my machine?

Using it with parallels desktop 9 on my mac.

A:Where can I buy the full retail version of 7 -- not system builders

I haven't seen them listed for sale for over a year. But we hear lately that they are allowing retail OEM to move now when using MS phone Activation. Either way it may be the only option since they still think their only popular OS is being phased out, even as business moves off of XPired almost entirely into Win7.

I recently purchased the retail version of Malwarebytes just to see if it's any good. It seems almost mindless how people talk about Malwarebytes but and I have yet to try it. However, the only computer I have that I am absolutely determined to keep for more than a few months already has comodo internet security installed. Now I am fully aware that having two RT scanners running simultaneously is supposedly a recipe for instant distaster, but you know what?
It's been almost a week and nothing bad has happened.

I've deliberately tried to infect my computer and nothing I've found on the internet gets past it. Sometimes Malwarebytes catches it, sometime CIS catches it. Rarely they both find something simultaneously. Who knows, maybe someone in microsoft is smart enough to have figured out by now that there is no such thing as a single application that can stop everything out there.

A:Full retail version of Malwarebytes & Comodo.. anyone using both?

Although the prevailing feeling is that it would not be ok. I feel that you should not have a problem.
I won the free version of Malewarebytes and it runs with my AntiVirus with no problem. That is a benefit of Malwarebytes it plays nice with most antivirus software.
I would never run two antivirus software together as that is a sure forumla for problems, BSOD etc.
Since, I have been using mine since (about January) and you have been doing the same for a week, I am sure that we are doing the right thing.

I have read that a retail version of 7 can be transferred from one computer to another given that its totally uninstalled from the first computer. My friend is going to sell me his old copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for a new build I'm doing. Its only been installed once on his computer and it has died and he bought a new laptop now with Windows 8 and no longer needs or wants his copy of 7. My question is can I use it? My concern is if it was originally registered in his name will it activate in my name. I have also read that in some cases you have to call Microsoft for help activating. Will Microsoft give me a hard time because I bought this off a friend and not a retail store?

Okay.... Y'all get in a line, and I'll bend over so you can all give me a good hard kick in the butt. Why gimme a kick?? Ummm... well.. you read the title of this, right? Yep, I did it. It started fairly innocently - I have had a problem for a six months or so where I can't use Safe Mode, because it just re-boots me before I can get past the user login screen. I came across some info a couple days ago about a file I have in my system, sptd.sys, that has been associated with causing this problem. Sptd.sys is a virtual disk driver that DaemonTools virtual CD player program uses.I had uninstalled DaemonTools Lite and installed DT Pro/Standard right before I read this info about sptd.sys, so I promptly uninstalled the upgraded DT, disabled the sptd service, and deleted the file from system32\drivers folder. Unfortunately that didn't clear up my problem with Safe Mode rebooting Windows. I googled around some, and found references to two SafeBootKeyRepair programs - one by SubS, and one by Steelwerks. I came across the one by Steelwerks first and ran it, but it didn't fix the problem, so I kept looking and found another program for the same purpose by SubS, and ran that, but the problem persisted. In the course of looking for SafeBootKeyRepair I came across info about SubS' ComboFix program, and the fact that it would install the Recovery Console in XP Home. I had wanted to get the Recovery Console installed for a LONG time without being able... Read more

I mean can not access emails through Outlook or can not open Intranet Homepage. etc... When open IE and try to access intranet homepage, it complains that "your computer is connected to internet but not connected to intranet"

I had exactly same problem in past and Combofix fixed this problem.

Problem now :
Yesterday when I run Combofix, it loaded Blue Screen. Then said, your Combofix is old and newer Combofix is available do you want to download ? I said, Ok.
Then it shown me progress bar showing that it is downloading. But, after download, Blue Screen disappeared and another Blue Screen openned automatically.
This screen was blank.

Since then, no matter what I do, my computer remembers that Combofix was run earlier and always starts with Blank Blue Screen and does nothing. Stays blank for hours doing nothing.

Can you help me fix this problem ?

I have 2 machines that will not run Combofix. Both machines had spyware that was removed, and now neither will boot in safe mode, and neither will run combo fix.Combofix opens up, the little box appears and the green status bar scrolls across.. Task manager shows the combofix processes running, the .pif ect files. But then the box hangs, never closes, and the blue status box never opens. The computer becomes overloaded by something running and non responsive.1 machine boots to a blue screen with no text when you try and boot safe mode. The other machine boots to mup.sys and then hangs.Any ideas how to get combofix to run on either of these machines?Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Though I have deleted the partitions and reformatted also the same problem. But when I try to install the same trial version it works fine.

Where are you finding pricing info for W7?
Last I heard it is still in beta and isnt available to be sold.

As for the upgrade or full version that is up to you but in Vista there is a trick to use the upgrade disk and be able to do a full install. Im not sure if that option will still be possible in W7 until it comes out.

I purchased a full retail version of Windows 8.1 that comes on 32-bit and 64-bit DVD's. Will the retail version still ask for the Windows 8.1 product key when installing from the Windows 8 desktop? Does the retail version check for the BIOS embedded product key before asking for the product key?

A:Windows 8.1 Full Retail version over Windows 8

Hello Keith,

The Windows 8.1 installation will detect the Windows 8 product key embedded in your UEFI/BIOS firmware, but it will be determined as invalid since it's a Windows 8 product key and not a retail Windows 8.1 product key.

You will then be prompted as usual to enter your Windows 8.1 product key like in step 4 below.

Clean Install - Windows 8

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello out there!

Just went through some craziness. My desktop was infected with the XP AntiVirus 2011 and it was driving me insane. And so I ran ComboFix (after Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, TDSKiller, and ESET Scan). I came up with 2 separate logs (LOG #1, LOG #2) and copied them below. Would anyone out there mind reviewing my diagnostics to see if there's something strange I'm missing. I'd truly appreciate your expertise.

I use 64-bit windows 7.

I recently got infected with a Trojan:JS/Medfos virus. I looked up a tutorial on how to get rid of it, and it said to use Combofix. I didn't know that it was such a dangerous program or anything- I only found this out when I looked into the program online later! Well, it appears I ran into some good luck, and combofix got rid of the virus. When I tried to type combofix /uninstall in 'Run', though, it said that windows could not find combofix! I searched the entire computer for combofix.exe, but found nothing. There is a Qoobox folder with some things in it in the C drive, but nothing more.

I don't remember saving combofix.exe to anywhere. I think I just ran it.

I've heard that the thing to do is download combofix.exe again and save it to the desktop- not run it- and uninstall it through that. However, since I now know about the damage the program has caused, I don't want to push my luck.

What do I do? I still have the log, if that's needed.

A:Can't uninstall combofix because I can't find combofix.exe

Never mind! I did what I said above, and it worked fine. The Qoobox folder is gone.

Hello BleepingComputer Community

I'm a pretty Technical Guy - and while recently fixing a friends system (removing viruses, malware etc), I downloaded and Ran - Combofix (being sure of course to name it.. something other then Combofix).

It went through stage 1.. 2.. 3.. 3b.. etc.. right up to 50.. -redrew the blue screen. - where i was informed.. not to run any other programs.. - the icons on the screen disappeared momentarily.. - then it said.. hey.. going to write the log file down. .in the root of C: drive. .- c:\combofix.txt - great - seen it before.. standard practice.. - all cool

POOOF ! .. - BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) appears momentarily on screen.. and system reboots..

Jumped into safe mode (with networking) .. ran through combofix again.. - this time.. it let me go thru all the 50 stages.. and WROTE the file down.. - no problems.. no BSoD

..any thoughts.. - suggestions..?

Thank You

I had the mystart malware, got malwarebytes and combofix, and dealt with the nasties.

However now my computer is sluggish, programs hang or stop running, and I can't watch videos on news.bbc.co.uk, or on yahoo. Takes a bit of time to login to mail, etc.

I used Norton Power Eraser the other day, and it showed Combofix as the problem, but when I try to uninstall using the instructions on bleeping I get a "not found" message. I'm running Windows 7.

Hi...

I looked around in this forum to find a solution for a similar problem to no avail.

Below is my HiJackThis log showing the DPF of the C:\ComboFix\HIDEC.exe.

Awhile back, while trying to troubleshoot some other issue on my laptop, I had downloaded ComboFix from BleepingComputer. Incidentally, I had downloaded it from a link in one of this forum's post. It didn't work, so I deleted it and tried downloading from going to BleepingComputer's site directly...same non-working result so I deleted it again.

Since then, though, when I start-up my laptop, an error window comes up saying that it can't find the ComboFix file. I tried fixing it in HiJackThis to no avail. I ran Smitfraud, Malwarebytes and my AVG full computer scan to no avail either. Any help would be greatly appreciated...and if you have any other suggestions by looking at my log about elminating some of the crap on my laptop to help it run faster, please don't hesitate to offer it.

Gracious thanks in advance,
sdnrgee

Is there a difference between the MSDN subscription version of Vista Ultimate and the Retail version that would cause the Virtual Server2005 R2 SP1 installation to fail on a PC upgraded from Home Premium (retail version) to Ultimate (MSDN subscription version)?

I have a Vista x64 Home Premium that came loaded with software from the manufacturer that I would lose if I were to overwrite it by a new installation from my MSDN subscription version of Vista Ultimate.

If I install Vista Ultimate as a brand new installation, Virtual Server installation works fine.

But if I install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 after I upgraded Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate, I get the following error at the last phase of the installation: ?Windows Installer has stopped working? and then it sends to Microsoft the attached 3 files.

I even tried Windows Installer 4.5 but it did not work either:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

Any idea why the upgraded version fails to install Virtual Server 2005 whereas the brand new installation of the MSDN subscription Vista Ultimate works?

I recently was infected by a virus so I ran Malware Bytes which usually takes care of any viruses pretty well. After it scanned there was one that it said it could not be removed so I assumed it was one that would be cleaned upon reboot. I scanned again anyway after reboot several times but it comes back with nothing but my browsers keep redirecting to random sites. Previously to fix this, i've used ComboFix which has successfuly fixed that. I still had the Combofix file on my computer so I ran Rkill first (which only killed a Google Updater) then CombFix. My ZA firewall put up connection alerts several times for IE and Firefox, and either accepting or declining them, I get an error message from ComboFix that says "error - win32 only" in English and several other languages and it never starts. I have XP pro on my machine, i've downloaded the most recent one (combofix) available from here at BC and even tried to run it in safe mode. What is the problem? Can anyone help? Anyone experience this?

A:Combofix error

ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computerYou shouldn't be running ComboFix without supervision by staff here at BC.

Okay, I'm just looking to pick up a couple ideas from the kind and wonderful people here.

I use combofix fairly regularly with my job, I'm lead tech for a small district of a large corp. and I was introduced to combofix a couple years ago and found that it simplifies the cleanup and removal of certain malware to where I can take care of them in mere moments.

And so I had a customer with sysguard on it, sysguard is not a new bug, nor is it exceptionly bad, just annoying. Program wise its actually very similar to smitfraud, and can be removed using some of the same tactics. But combofix can kill it in one fell swoop, unfortunately when I ran it this last time I received the error Not Admin when it started scanning. I went though everything I could think of to find where this permission error was coming from, but its WinXP MCE sp3, there are not a lot of choices inside the Administrator Account in SafeMode.

I went and manually removed the hoaxware, much more time consuming. I decided to try combofix again just to see if the bugger was what was stopping it from running, but I get the same error. Everything else I have runs fine, even the batch and com tools that I have.

So, anyone with information would be good. I unfortunately will not be able to post any logs as I do not have access to the computer anymore. I'm mostly looking for ideas that i can try in case I run into this again.

I was advised to run ComboFix as a possible solution to the problem that I'm having accessing some files (Access is Denied) and activating command lines such as chkdsk, where I am told that I do not have sufficient privileges.

I am the administrator on a private pc.

Unfortunately I did not read the instructions regarding preparation so I do not have a helper. The DDS does not download, but I have attached the log report.

Can anyone pls advise what I should do? There is no change in the problem of file access and privilege level.

I downloaded the newest version of Combofix on 7/8/10. When it is run it detects a Rootkit. I say OK to reboot. XP hangs during shutdown. After 4 hours it still has not shut down and rebooted. If I do a cold boot Combofix then runs but finds no problems and deletes nothing upon completion. If I reboot and run ComboFix again the same thing happens (finds a Rootkit but hangs during reboot). I put a different hard drive with XP that I know if be malware free. When Combofix is run it has the same exact issue.

Please note the message text in blue at the top of the Am I infected? What do I do? forum. No one should be using ComboFix unless specifically instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert who can interpret the logs. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Ok so we are getting the following error on 20+ pc's on a domain based network. We get this error on basically every PC we log into and run combofix on. We have tried MANY rootkit removal utilities with no luck. (ie malwarebytes, combofix, sdfix, rootkit revealer, Trend rootkit, mcafee rootkit, superantispyware, etc...) The server has also been scanned... We've deleted the users profiles on the server and on the local PC's, we've even completely reloaded a PC and added it back to the domain and the message came back immediately after running combofix on a clean profile. After the error pops up it prompts us to reboot the computer and then it runs combofix again and finds nothing. If we wait a little while after that it comes back up again... If anyone has seen this or has any input it would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer.I take it this is about a corporate network? If so, you really should consider a reformat or having the IT department taking this down. We cannot possibly work on 20 computers at a time in this forum. Besides, while cleaning one computer, malware would spread through the network and reinfected it, and so undo all our work.To have a chance to successfully clean all machines, you will need to isolate all of them, make sure all of them are completely clean as well as any removable storage and only after that reconnect the computers.
