Can't Disable EFS for Desktop

Q: Can't Disable EFS for Desktop

Hello all. I'm having problems disabling EFS on my machine.

The problem started when I decided to click the "Encrypt contents to secure data" on a random file in one of my storage folders. I've never used this function before and I was trying to find a way to password protect a file.

After realizing this wasn't how to accomplish what I was trying to do, I disabled the box and resumed going about my business.

I then noticed any new files made on my desktop were being automatically encrypted, with the lock icon attached. It doesn't matter if it's a new file created from scratch, or a file being copied over to the desktop from another location. I can easily override the automatic encryption using advanced properties, but I want to permanently stop windows from doing this.

My first attempt involved going to the desktop folder's advanced attributes and attempting to uncheck the box, which gives me an error message and doesn't work.

Then I tried disabling EFS through services.msc.

After rebooting my system, I attempted to copy the same file to the desktop to see if it would automatically encrypt again. The transfer window simple hung at "0 bytes complete" for a nonstop loop. I canceled the operation, and tried creating a new .txt file directly on the desktop. This caused the whole desktop to crash, and after using CTRL ALT DLT, the windows I had open were still there but the desktop was just a black, unrecoverable screen. I had to reboot.

After rebooting and re-enabling the EFS thru services.msc, I tried using the command prompt. I used the following command.

cipher /d /s:"C:\Users\User\Desktop"
It returned with this error.

I've run all the cursory anti-virus and anti-malware scans at my disposal just to rule out any possibility of virus' causing the issue, which include Windows Defender and Spybot. They returned no results, although I already highly doubted this would be the issue. I'd like to think I have fairly good security hygiene when it comes to managing my system, and this wasn't a problem until I decided to encrypt that very first file.

I am at a total loss here. I can't figure out how to stop the desktop from automatically encrypting all new files. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a laptop. It has Windows 8. I hate it. With 7, I could actually control the computer. With 8, the computer controls me.

Anyway, one big problem is that sometimes without warning the computer will shift from the program I am running to something else, that is hard to get out of. I do not want that stupid start page. I want the desktop, and the programs I want to run. I want to make the desktop my way, and put things into the folders I want, and disable things I do not want. I want to be able to quit a program. Is there any way of doing that, or am I going to have to go broke buying Mac?

A:Disable shift from desktop

This is basically the same as your other thread, and my reply would be almost exactly the same. So I am closing this as a duplicate.

Disable shift from desktop was the thread, but the administrator wrongly marked it as identical to the other post I made regarding setting up an additional account, so they closed it. I have a laptop. It unexpectedly will move to some screen other than the one I am working on. A few minutes ago it shifted to Xbox Videos, without any request for the shift by me. It lists all my videos, and will play none of the videos. Then, it is close to impossible to get the Xbox Videos window off of my screen so I can resume using the computer. I can play my videos using VLC Media Player, when I can turn off whichever trash dump screen the computer has exiled me to. I do not want to shift from one screen to another unless I request it. Apparently, various forms of touching the computer surface lead to unexpected and unwanted commands to the computer. Sometimes it is Xbox Videos, sometimes it is labeled System Settings, though only some settings are available. Is there a way to disable an unwanted shift from the program I am working on to some other screen? Is there some sort of instruction booklet online that tells you how to actually operate Windows 8? I hope that the administrator of this site will allow someone to answer this question instead of closing it out.

As my specs states, I have a rather low end video card (Geforce GT 520) and CPU (Celeron) and on Windows 7, disabling Aero/compositing would speed up many games noticeably (Bioshock infinite, TF2, NFS and more)...

I read that Windows 8 won't allow it to be disabled at all unless you remove video drivers (kinda useless in this case).

Why didn't Windows 8 have a option to disable it at least temporarily while a game is running as Windows 7 had?

Hello everyone, really hope someone can help me out here.

Recently, I've been experiencing weird crashes on my computer. Basically my computer will "crash" at random times, but in a strange way. Whatever task I'm currently doing will be closed, the start button and task bar will completely disappear, all my desktop icons will disappear and the only thing that shows is my desktop wallpaper. I can't right click anywhere on the desktop, it's literally just my background and nothing else.

Now, I can CTRL ALT DEL, so it seems that its just the desktop crashing somehow? Its getting really annoying now because I have to CTRL ALT DEL and log off, then log back on again to get my desktop back.

Any ideas guys?

Here are my specs if you need them:

OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
CPU: Intel i7 4790k
GPU: Geforce GTX 750ti
RAM: Corsair Vengence Pro 8gb 2400mhz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 5
CPU Cooler: Corsair H55 Liquid Cooler
PSU: Corsair CX600 80 Plus Bronze 600w
Hard Drive(s): 1tb Seagate Barracuda Sata 6Gb/s 64mb Cache 7200rpm x2

Usually when that situation occurs it meant that Windows Explorer had crashed. Logging off or restarting suggest a problem with memory so I'd start by getting memtest86 and run it several times to check your RAM.

I would like to know if there is some possiblity to disable the drag ability (drag to close apps, drag to snap them to the side, not the drag/drop of files/folders)?

The only thing I found so far are those 2:

MouseCloseThresholdPercent (REG_DWORD) 0
TouchCloseThresholdPercent (REG_DWORD) 0

But this only disables the close functionallity, I am still able to drag them around and snap the apps.
If its a different registry entry, I would only need it for the desktop but wouldnt mind to completly disable this feature.

I currently have a Bat file (that I converted to exe called "kill start") set up that disables all my "extra" processes, and fires up a video game (i have one for each game), launches my Voip program of choice, and logs me in etc. That way I only have to hit one hot key and I'm good to go. Another hot key (and another exe runs called "rez start") my game/voip close, and my other processes start back up again.

As you can see, I've put a lot of work into being lazy

The one thing that gets me is I'd like to disable the desktop background slideshow as well. (and have it start running again when i launch the second exe)
No idea how to do this using the command line. I suspect the use of powercfg, but I can't figure it out.
Any ideas?

P.S. Bonus points for figuring out how to set fans on max speed instead of variable speeds with kill start. And back with rez start.

I need to get rid of the beta of Outpost Security Suite that I installed a couple of days ago, because it went haywire on my secondary computer. There was a BSOD naming ASWFilt64.dll, and since then I can't boot into either into regular desktop or Safe Mode. After running the Startup Repair Utility, the next attempt to boot failed as before, but the third attempt partially worked, after saying that the problem was due to a recently installed software package. This and the BSOD has convinced me that the Outpost beta is the cause. The reason that I said that it "partially" succeeded in booting, is because after a slow and long boot, it only finished loading part of the programs in the Notification Tray, and after maybe 30 minutes, it BSODed as before.

As in the post title, how can one either uninstall or disable a program without reaching desktop?

See I have had this ATI card for almost 2 years and have updated the drivers many times, and before you install the new ones, you must un-install all the old ones first. But you can't use the card with no drivers, so you must switch to the built-in card to install the new drivers. So after I switch to AGP in the BIOS (the ATI card was PCI), I could see the Windows XP start-up screen, but after that the screen went blank. I know it entered the desktop okay because I can hear the XP music, but I cant see anything. I have tried switching back to PCI, but the drivers are not installed, so it doesn't work. I have tried safe mode and VGA mode, but I still get a blank screen after the Windows screen. And I know their is nothing wrong with the monitor. Is their any way I can reinstall the built-in cards drivers. I just need a way I can see the desktop so I can install the ATI cards drivers. I thank the people here in advance for help.

A:I Think I Accidentally Disable All My Video Cards, Now I Cant See Desktop

we are building some restricted Clients for a special room and we need to disable the save as dialoge
When open a PDF-Document in InternetExplorer and then want to save it, the default path is set to My Documents (Instead of the default "Downloads" save location from IE) . We have already disabled the Libarys via Registry but in the "save
as" dialoge they are still there.
We want to achive that a User can only save files to a fileserver and nowhere else. Additionally we have seen this in the open dialog with the desktop as default path, which we want to disable also. Normally the User see anything in the Desktop (restricted
via GPO), but unfortunately its possiable to save and open files there.
I have looked at User- and ShellFolder Registry Keys to custimize the dialoges but it works, but possibly not the best solution. Also I know thats possiable to work with folder redirection, but then the libaries are still there.
Is there a way to disable the "documents" and "desktop" save-as dialogs, so that its noted by the application and only show the share path?
I hope its possiable to understand what I mean :-)

A:Disable Save to Desktop / Documents Folder

If you would like to restrict user from saving file on Desktop, you can remove Modify permission from their Desktop folder by Startup scripts. Group Policy cannot restrict add/remove item if they have modify permission.
You can enable the following Policies to disable downloading.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Security Page
You can enable "Allow file downloads" policy and select Disable in Internet Zone and Intranet Zone.Mark as Answer if it's worked. Thanks. Balamurugan_Subramaniyan
