T480 won't turn on

Q: T480 won't turn on

Hi everyone, today I upgraded the RAM and the SSD of my T480. I am absolutely not doing this for the first time and I was really careful. I removed the external battery and deactivated the internal battery before starting with the procedure. I used only ESD-safe tools and an ESD-wristband to make sure that the device doens't get damaged by static discharge. After installing the components, my device would no longer turn on. When I connect the charger, the power led flashes 3x but when I press the powervbutton nothing happens. No fan spin, no lights turning on, absolutly nothing.I then tried removing the RAM and the SSD and turning on the machine. But that didn't work as well. After that I tried removing all the power sources (internal and external battery, CMOS-battery), pressing the power button for 60 seconds and leaving the device for 1 hour before reconnecting everything. But it still can't turn it on. Do you guys have any idea what I could try to make my device work again? Thanks in advance. --resonance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. Apologies if this has already been addressed somewhere; I haven?t been able to find a specific answer to my problem yet. I just finished replacing the original keyboard with a compatible backlit version on my thinkpad t480 (with windows 10) and now I can?t seem to start up my laptop. Because I had to disable power before installing the keyboard, I followed this online guide for entering the BIOS menu through Windows 10:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500222...and then followed the rest of the steps outlined in this video:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ebvwzax4Dcw There aren?t many steps but I still made sure to follow everything carefully, so I?m not sure what I?m missing. *Also - I hope it?s alright that I?m posting these links. I figured it would be much less confusing than to attempt to explain my entire process and possibly miss a step.  Disclaimer - I understand very little about computers so most of this is like a different language to me lol. That said, please let me know if I need to clarify anything.  Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!!

Sometimes, when the screen of my 2 month old T480 turns off to save battery, it freezes in that state! Note that I'm NOT talking about sleep mode, I'm talking about the "Turn off the dislay" in Windows Power Options. So far I've never had any issue with Sleep mode or Hibernation. I would say this happens roughly about 1 times out of 10, frequently enough to make the laptop utterly unreliable for any serious work. Neither keyboard/touchpad/trackpoint will get the screen back. The laptop is on though, I can hear the fan and switch the FnLock-led On/Off by pressing Fn+Esc. To get the laptop to function again the only option I have is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button for a few seconds...I have lost many many hours of unsaved work.   I have tried to activate the power button to enter sleep mode in the Windows Power Options "Choose what the power button do", so that I would be able to go from freeze state to sleep state, but without luck. The power button only answers to complete shutdowns. I have all the lastest updates both from Windows 10 and Lenove Vantage.  To set the "Turn off the dislay" to "Never" is obviously not an option, when the laptop is idling the screen is the most power hungry device, and replacing screen sleep with a full sleep would be very slow and tedious for my workflow (reading from book, coding some, reading from book, coding some...). I have spent hours searching for a solution and read... I've noticed my fan always stays on regading the temps when my machine is plugged on the 65W charger, temperatures remain between 38 and 57 on light use, but even when idling the fan kicks on as soon as I plug in my charger and turns off a couple seconds after I plug it off. I have tried to fix it by installing the patch mentioned on https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/es/en/solutions/ht506625 and changin the BIOS profile for the plugged status (it's on the same profile now both for AC plugged and unplugged) but the problem perists. Anyone knows how to fix this issue without the need to install 3rd party software or can point me to the windows 10 settings that regukate this behaviour? Thanks in advance.

Hi,This is the first Lenovo Laptop bought by me.I am using the laptop for a few days and the impressions are overalling good, but, I have 2 problems:The first is with the 2 battery system.I tought that the first battery to discharge was the removal battery, but that is not the case. Do I have to change something in BIOS?The second problem is with the UltraDockStation. When I have 1 USB disk connected to the DockStation, I am unable to backup laptop to USB disk, or to transfer big files (10GBs for example) (from the laptop to USB 3.0 disk). It starts normally and then it freezes the transfer. If I connect the USB disk directly to the laptop this problem doesn't occur. All components area updated, with Lenovo Vantage.Anyone has this problems and are there any ways to solve it?Thank you

A:2 Problems with new T480

I can only respond to the 1st question.  See post below.  you cant change in Bios discharge priority.  Discharge priority depends on the wear level of the 2 batteries.

Hey! I was wondering any kind of SSDs would work with the T480? Right now I bought it with 500 GB HDD and Intel Optane (16Gb), but in the future, I might consider upgrading to 512 nVME SSD for system. Also, what do you guys know about the battery life upon general internet usage? I bought a battery with 72Wh so in total it would be 96 Wh. Plus, I also own a Varta Power Bank (13mAh) 48,1 Wh. Do you guys believe it could charge the battery by any chance? https://www.varta-consumer.com/en/products/portable-power/overview/details/lcd-power-bank-13000 Please let me know you guys think! After perusing this and other forums looking for a definitive answer, there seem to be dissenting opinions on whether using the drive caddy and adapter cable in the HDD bay will allow 2280 M.2 NVMe SSD drives to utilize all 4 PCIe lanes. I want to know if there is a reason to shop for a higher end M.2 drive if I can't extract full performance out of it.

A:T480 M.2 SSD Performance

I don't have one to test, but the platform spec for the T480 says that some of the T480 machines have SATA drives and some have this: "M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4"

To me, that means is should use 4 lanes

I then left the standard 45W charger at an airport. I ordered a T480 with the Geforce MX150 option. Was surprised to see my delivered unit with Intel UHD 620 and simultaneously active with the Geforce GPU. The Intel GPU however is the default display adapter. Intel UHD 620 is active display adapterI've never quite seen this before. Desktop mainboard BIOS would typically disable the onboard GPU if slotted with an actual video card (leaving the OS blind to its presence), and all my previous laptops that I configured with a discrete GPU would have just that alone. Am I supposed to disable the UHD 620 in Device Manager in order to force the Geforce to take over? I don't see anything in the BIOS that can influence this (in fact it seems to suggest the UHD is in charge with its shared memory setting).

Hi,Recently bought a T480 with the 150MX Nvidia card. The laptop works great during normal operation during work etc but when I get home and want to play some games, nothing is working as it should. What happens is this:When I start the game everything is running good but after a few minutes I can see my CPU start to lower it's power limit (PL1) slowly towards 5W. It will stop at 5W never gaining any wattage back until i restart computer. The PL1 is at 15W when computer is newly booted. I have tried to uninstall the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, this results in that the processor is fixed at 15W but after a while the iGPU will go crazy and goes to 100% leaving the CPU at 2W = 0.2Ghz. And I have to restart. So this is not a valid solution. All my power settings are on maximum performance ofc.I have tried almost everything I can think of and been browsing all kind of reddit threads without any long term solution.

Hello all, Just received my sixth thinkpad in the last 23 years. It arrived yesterday.  It is a: T480, I7-8550U, 16GB(8+8), 512 M.2 SSD, iGPU, Win10 Pro The fan is really annoying.  It goes on and off constantly.  It seems to ramp up to full speed.  I have been reading about fan noise with this model all over the internet.  Is there a way for it to run constantly at a lower speed than the constant on and off?  My previous model was a T430 never had issues with fan noise (it was very quiet too when it ran). Currently running a test:  Not using the laptop at all.  Opened 1 tab on Chrome and have it sitting on cnn.com.  Also, opened one tab on Edge also on cnn.com.  Task manager open.  Chrome uses less CPU but more memory than Edge.  CPU is running between 15% and 20%.  Fan turns on every minute or so for about 20 to 30 seconds then goes off. It is loud and annoying going on and off.  Why can't it just be a constant lower speed?  On and off is ridiculous.  If this keeps up this machine is going back. Thanks for any replies and suggestions.

This behavior started recently.  Additionally I noticed that in device manager the UCSI USB connector manager sometimes will error out with an error 43. But this is sporadic and may be unrelated. Device manger view appears to repeatedly refresh, but have not been able to discover the conflict. I refreshed the os (win10) and it worked correctly for a bit, but then started doing the same thing again. Is this an error induced by a recent Lenovo or Microsoft update? Hardware problem?  Software?

Hi, I have a T480 and I need to disable hyperthreding, any advice on how can I do this?I can't see a suitable setting in the BIOS.Christian Note: I'm running Windows 10 Pro and I am trying to use it together with an engineering software tool [*] that needs hyperthreading to be disabled in order for me to run simulations locally on my laptop. [*] The tool is the TwinCAT3 extended automation engineering environment. It's used to develop control software for "soft PLC"s, i.e. in practice another computer. But in order to run simulations locally on the laptop, the TwinCAT3 runtime needs to be running locally which involves drivers in Window kernel ring 0. The TwinCAT3 runtime adds some real-time capabilitites to the system and it does not like hyperthreading.  This need is not something that I can change, it's part of the TwinCAT3 runtime.

I have been having issues with my battery on my T480 lately. I will have the laptop running around 50% battery and sometimes try to restart it but when I do, the laptop will not power back up. The Lenovo bios screen will post but when the Windows 10 circle starts spinning the computer fully shuts itself off and loses power and I cannot turn it back on until I plug the charger in, but when Windows loads it says I have battery. Yesterday I was using the laptop and when it went from 50 to 49% battery the laptop fully died and shut off and would not power on again until I plugged in the charger, yet showed 49% battery when Windows loaded again. I have been working out in the cold with my laptop and I am not sure if that is or has affected it some how but I can't keep having these types of issues when I need to be able to use my computer in the field. I know Lenovo used to have a tool to reset and deplete and recharge the battery, does this still exist? I ran the diagnostic tool but it finished instantly saying both batteries were fine with a time on the diagnostic of 0 seconds. Not sure if there is another tool I can be using to try and get this working properly again.
