Thinkpad Yoga 15 - Internal Display black, only output on external HDMI

Q: Thinkpad Yoga 15 - Internal Display black, only output on external HDMI

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My mini HDMI output has stopped working. No video no sound on the external screen. I've updated everything- Windows, Intel Graphics drivers, all the critical updates on the Lenovo companion app but still no luck. The computer doesn't even seem to recognise that the output is connected (the little sound that plays when the cable is plugged in doesn't play). I have tested the cable and monitor on another lenovo device and all works fine.  Frustratingly the output seems to work when connected via the Thinkpad Dock.  Also of note: the advanced display settings no longer takes me to the desktop verison of the application. Even if I go through the control panel, but takes me to the basic windows 10 interface, Anybody have any ideas- I really need to be able to project from my computer

Hi, I just got my Thinkpad P70 4k with Nvidia Quadro M3000M graphics this week, running Windows 10 Pro.I have run into a lot of issues regarding HDMI output - switching to discrete graphics disables the HDMI output and i can no longer change the resolution or scaling (nor does the Nvidia Control Panel show up). In mixed graphics mode the HDMI output works, and i can change the resolution  but after waking from sleep the image only shows on the external (HD display) connected over HDMI.I have to disconnect the HDMI cable to get video on the laptop screen and the reconnect it to get video on both screens.I suspect that the Intel Graphics runs the Laptop Screen in mixed graphics mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel I can only control the external display.    I am running the latest BIOS (2.03) and updated the Nvidia Drivers directly from NVIDIA (10.18.13.6256).  On another note I also had a black screen issue after updating the BIOS to 2.03 (no idea what version came installed) everytime i rebooted and had to disconnect the Bios Battery twice, but that somehow (??) got resolved after taking out a SD card from the Card Reader.

I purchased an external monitor on Friday.  It worked on Friday and Saturday. Sunday when I booted up, the external monitor no longer worked. The history appears to show an automatic update occurred overnight.  I was running Windows 8.1.  I upgraded to 10.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the intel video driver, I reinstalled the chipset driver.  I have trimmed the micro HDMI cord as suggested in one of the posts.  I have seen enough posts on the various boards to know my issue does not seem to be an isolated case... but I haven't been able to find an explanation of the cause or a reliable solution.  Any help is appreciated.

I've had my Yoga working almost flawlessly since purchase.  I use a Wacom Cintiq without issue and our of no where, I get a black screen on display 2.  I've tried multple displays and cables.  I am aware converters do not work so these are straight connections.  Sometimes through DP, the laptop screen will flicker like crazy and I need to unplud the Mini DP cable.  I uninstalled drivers but that didn't help.  The second display is picked up by Windows, it just doesnt show video.  Any ideas?

I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

The title says it all. I'm very frustrated with this problem since I really need to connect my laptop to an external monitor for work. I've read and tried all relative topics in this and intel forums (e. g: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-920-can-t-connect-to-any-external-mon...), have done all steps mentioned (including firmware, bios and windows update, windows reset, ...) but the problem still persists. Apparently, most users that had faced the same problem been able to get it worked after installing "Type C Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit)" or the BIOS update provided by Lenovo. I installed them successfully but nothing changed. I am sure it is a software issue since there is no sign of any hardware one (all devices are fine as device manager shows and diagnostics app found no problem). It was just working fine until suddenly stopped working (probably after some recent windows update). I would greatly appreciate any help.

I've just received my Laptop back from repair and all seems to be well, I had my screen panel replaced, gpu replaced(from 570m to 670m), new hard drive and CPU fan. However the problem I seem to be having is that internal speakers are completely not working.

I can see that bolume bar in for my internal speakers is actually changing but there is no sound. My system is not muted (unless there's some secret button I'm missing out on) No matter what i try it seems that sound will not work through my internal speakers, I've plugged in my Razer headset(Kraken) that works with my other computer but is not even detected when plugged in the Audio jacks of my laptop(Doesnt even pick up the microphone) and this did work before I sent it out for repair. Sound only works through HDMI output into a TV/Monitor.

Now I'm not sure if this some software configuration that I have to do or something physical with the hardware but I would prefer to not have to send it back as it would take a month to get back to me and also the repair company states that if the problem is due to software then they will charge.

I assume it's a conflict that Realtek HD audio manager is having or something but none of my devices show up on the RealtekHD Audio Manager nor do I get a pop up when a device is detected(which is what normally would of happened)

Excuse my English please as it's my second language...I have a 1440p 144hz monitor, I can not choose 1440p as an display option when connecting X1 to it via HDMI, I can only get 1080p in windows settings. In Intel HD Graphics Control Panel however, I can set custom resolution up to 2560*1440 @30hz, anything higher than that won't work, it says "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum badwidth capacity".I couldn't find the specification of the HDMI port on X1 carbon, but some people in the community say it's HDMI1.4 and they can get [email protected]? Then it should be able to handle [email protected] right? Also my cable shouldn't be the problem, since my other laptop can output 1440p @60hz just fine. Is anyone having the same problem?

Greetings, Lenovo community. I've had this laptop (ThinkPad Yoga 14, running 64-bit Windows 8.1) for about four years, and, for the past few months, I've been having small issues with my audio. Since I've installed Windows 10 on my ThinkPad Yoga S1 (20C0-S0AX00), I've never been able to get audio via HDMI working. In theory, it looks like it's all fine: ? In practice, however, no audio is transmitted via HDMI (I tried it with different monitors), and the video signal of any application trying to play audio over HDMI is stuttering ? as if it's trying to sync audio and video, but failing for some reason. As soon as the output device is changed, the video plays smoothly again. Changing the "Default Format" did not change anything. Currently, "16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD quality)" is selected. A support ticket I opened quickly after upgrading to Windows 10 promised a driver update to fix this. A more recent ticket advised me to revert to the stock Windows 8.1 installation instead, which I refuse to do. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?

A:ThinkPad Yoga S1 - No sound via HDMI on Windows 10

Hi

I have a different Thinkpad Yoga. Checking your issue I wonder if you would like to do some "trial and error" like:

1) Try a different HDMI cable, you never know.
2) Check the driver version of you Intel Display Audio. Here it is mine:
?
3) Just in case check the Lenovo Support site for your model and try updating the Intel Video and Realtek drivers just in case.

This is only that cames to my mind right now.

Hi I wonder if anyone else has had this problem, and more importantly if anyone else knows the solution? The ProblemIn the past few weeks, using the Lenovo-supplied mini HDMI to VGA adaptor has caused intermittent problems:-Immobilising the system so that the only thing that works is the mouse cursor (but icons on the desktop and within programs won't work)Causing a blue screen of deathBut on some occasions it works perfectlyWith the adaptor removed, everything is fine & stable apart from:-The system won't shut down correctly (it just hangs and says its shutting down but never does)The system won't go to sleep properly (power light remains on)The system won't "wake up" when the lid is openedWhen the problem first arose, it was just the system "freeze" issue, which fixed itself.  After trying to use the adaptor unsuccessfully a couple of days ago I had the blue screen of death and now have the additional "shut down" and "sleep" issues which don't seem to have gone away. I should mention as well that for some reason when I plugged in the HDMI-VGA lead at one point, the system crashed and took me to a BIOS screen rather than re-booting.  The system is now performing a disk scan on booting up, which it didn't before. This seems to be an issue caused by the HDMI-VGA adaptor, but how on earth this can have such an effect I really don't know.  I have ordered a replacement so that I can check this out. Right now I am in the process of check... I have tried using both the vga output and the mini display port without any success. I had the same issue when the original screen was connected, the only way I got around it was by closing the lid, which the device no longer has, as it is literally just a motherboard.Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello,I've been running into a fairly consistent problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad P70. It has the Quadro M3000m, and the Xeon CPU option which includes the HD530 graphics. I usually run the graphics in Hybrid mode, since I run into driver compatibility problems running it in Discrete Only.In Hybrid mode, there's some strange behavior. When I use the external HDMI display only, Extended Display, or the internal laptop display only, everything works well. However, when I use "Duplicate Display", it does not work. The laptop display turns on, goes to a very low resolution (1280x720 I believe), and the external display turns off. When I look in the Intel GPU multi-display settings, it says that there are two displays, the laptop display and "virtual display". When I go into the nVidia multi-display GPU settings, it shows that there are three: The Samsung TV (My external display), the internal display, and 'Analog display', which it shows connected via VGA (which is wrong), and also shows a max resolution of this 'analog display' as 1280x720. In the nVidia screen, it shows that while activating the 'duplicate display' mode, the computer tries to connect to both the internal display and this 'analog display' (which is not correct at all), but if I manually disable the analog display, enable the Samsung TV, and then right-click the Samsung TV and click "Duplicate from Display 1", the duplicate display feature works, and the "analog display" disappears from the list. Hi, My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected. 1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal? 2. The touch screen works 3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working 4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables? Thanks in advance Andrew

A:Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector. I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

Hi Everyone:

So I want to set my Yoga 2 Pro QHD+ (3200x1800) screen to 2560x1440 and am having some issues. windows will let me use for 16:9 3200x1800, 2048x1152, and 1080p. Trying to set a custom resolution in intel control panel gives me an exceeded bandwidth message with the HD 4400. I am using drivers 15.36.19.4170 and I have researched the issue but they always seem to point to using the hdmi out for a dual-link dvi display. One person on superuser had a similar question but I don't think it had a solution that worked I could follow. Can't create custom resolution using intel custom mode app in windows 8.1 - Super User

So does anyone know of a regedit to make this work or if my display can not support this resolution since the way the pixels are laid out or something. I think 3200 is to much for this gpu to handle well but love the real estate, and 2560x1440 is I think the sweet spot for 13 inch displays atm. My desktop res is also this resolution so I feel right at home.

Thanks again
Malcolm

While everything else is working fine, the notebook seems not to be able to detect my external monitor (ThinkVision t2424p), when connecting it via a VGA to HDMI adapter. This setup flawlessly worked with my last notebook. Regardless whether I try to connect the monitor when Windows is already running or when I boot into Windows with the monitor already connected, the monitor doesn't show up in the screen resolutions settings nor does there appear an additional device in the device manager.  Do you know what the problem might be? The apater works fine when used with a different Notebook. Thank you very much, EBM

I have a Yoga 11s that started having hdmi connection issues about a year ago and has recently quit connecting to an external monitor via HDMI completely. We tried upgrading to Windows 10 to see if that would overwrite any software issues - no luck. The HDMI port actually appears loose. I did an extensive search of the forum and found posts that recommended cutting down the rubber around the base of the hdmi cord - tried that and at least I had a little activitiy - in the upper right hand corner of the external monitor up popped a box that says DVI then VGA then HDMI - but then says No Signal. Tried the graphics card update recommended on a post from long time ago and a popup indicated I had a newer version already installed. I have taken it to a laptop repair place - said they couldn't get parts from Lenovo. I found an "authorized" Lenovo repair shop locally - when I called they said they only work on business machines Called Lenovo and they told me to take it to Best Buy - however since I purchased this directly from Lenovo, Best Buy said they can't work on it. I would rather not send it into Lenovo because they tried to charge my hubby hundreds of dollars when his 15 day brand new laptop quit working, claiming damage - luckily extensive pictures taken and dated prior to sending it in thwarted that attempt at extortion. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to be able to do presentations and work remotely with this so it is no... Read more

I have a Dell XPS L521x with Intel 4000 graphics as well as Nvidia GeForce GT640M. I currently only have one external display using the display port and I want to get a 2nd external monitor but I'm not sure if I can. I have read elsewhere that Intel 4000 graphics only supports up to two displays whether or not one of those is the internal display. So since I have a dedicated graphics card am I able to go up to go up another display? If you need more information let me know. Thanks!

A:Can I set up 2 external displays and my internal display?

I found the answer to my question. I went into control panel and looked at my display setup and my external monitor is using the Nvidia chip so I have expansion room for one more monitor.

After reading through dreaded black screen issue for other models, I am checking if the Thinkpad Yoga also has the black screen issue. Given that this happened barely inside a month after the warranty expired, this has solid changes to be the last lenovo product in the family. Issue: I returned one home from work to wake up my sleeping Lenovo. Noticed it seemed to be in a dark screen mode with nothing showing up. So tried to press a few buttons and then finally powered off using the button. Upon restart, I could see the Lenovo sign and option to press Enter to check other options and I ignored like usual happy path scenario and let it go. At the time it usually starts showing the Windows screens, I see nothing happen. A dark screen with all the keyboard lights still working but no screen. Connected to projector to see if the login screen shows but it did NOT. Tried to restart few times, reset using the pinhole at the bottom, ran diagnositcs and tried to refresh system etc using the troubleshoot options, checked the BIOS settings - all of which show up on screen and the LCD test pass like a charm but the Windows boot does not work. Thinkpad Yoga 15 running on Windows 10 pro. 20DQ machine type. The frustarting thing is warranty just expired end of July, phone support wont even discuss the issue since it is expired. I spent good amount of days thinking about spending a lot on this laptop last year only to reach a point within one year I might have to spend few mor... Read more
