Thinkpad Yoga 15 - Internal Display black, only output on external HDMI

Q: Thinkpad Yoga 15 - Internal Display black, only output on external HDMI

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I just got my Thinkpad P70 4k with Nvidia Quadro M3000M graphics this week, running Windows 10 Pro.I have run into a lot of issues regarding HDMI output - switching to discrete graphics disables the HDMI output and i can no longer change the resolution or scaling (nor does the Nvidia Control Panel show up). In mixed graphics mode the HDMI output works, and i can change the resolution  but after waking from sleep the image only shows on the external (HD display) connected over HDMI.I have to disconnect the HDMI cable to get video on the laptop screen and the reconnect it to get video on both screens.I suspect that the Intel Graphics runs the Laptop Screen in mixed graphics mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel I can only control the external display.    I am running the latest BIOS (2.03) and updated the Nvidia Drivers directly from NVIDIA (10.18.13.6256).  On another note I also had a black screen issue after updating the BIOS to 2.03 (no idea what version came installed) everytime i rebooted and had to disconnect the Bios Battery twice, but that somehow (??) got resolved after taking out a SD card from the Card Reader.

My mini HDMI output has stopped working. No video no sound on the external screen. I've updated everything- Windows, Intel Graphics drivers, all the critical updates on the Lenovo companion app but still no luck. The computer doesn't even seem to recognise that the output is connected (the little sound that plays when the cable is plugged in doesn't play). I have tested the cable and monitor on another lenovo device and all works fine.  Frustratingly the output seems to work when connected via the Thinkpad Dock.  Also of note: the advanced display settings no longer takes me to the desktop verison of the application. Even if I go through the control panel, but takes me to the basic windows 10 interface, Anybody have any ideas- I really need to be able to project from my computer

I purchased an external monitor on Friday.  It worked on Friday and Saturday. Sunday when I booted up, the external monitor no longer worked. The history appears to show an automatic update occurred overnight.  I was running Windows 8.1.  I upgraded to 10.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the intel video driver, I reinstalled the chipset driver.  I have trimmed the micro HDMI cord as suggested in one of the posts.  I have seen enough posts on the various boards to know my issue does not seem to be an isolated case... but I haven't been able to find an explanation of the cause or a reliable solution.  Any help is appreciated.

I've had my Yoga working almost flawlessly since purchase.  I use a Wacom Cintiq without issue and our of no where, I get a black screen on display 2.  I've tried multple displays and cables.  I am aware converters do not work so these are straight connections.  Sometimes through DP, the laptop screen will flicker like crazy and I need to unplud the Mini DP cable.  I uninstalled drivers but that didn't help.  The second display is picked up by Windows, it just doesnt show video.  Any ideas?

Hi,Background on Issue I've had the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd gen (product # 20JDCTO1WW; BIOS version N1NET46W 1.33) since it came out. It's running the latest build (non-targeted channel) of Windows 10 Pro with all Windows updates and all Lenovo System updates installed (through Lenovo Vantage app), as of this writing. The laptop has only professional/scientific software installed and it's strictly used in a work setting in a climate-controlled office (i.e. no exposure to extreme heat/cold, humidity, dust, etc.) (scientific/professional software like statistic analysis software, Office, browsing company websites and other non-entertainment professional sites, etc.) and there have been no system registry modifications, no 3rd party driver installation, or anything outside of the normal functioning of the system. Windows has never been re-installed/reset from the factory-shipped condition, and I haven't even accessed the BIOS for the first time since it was purchased. There's > 250GB free from the 1 TB SSD, and RAM utilization never reaches > 50% even on the heaviest of workloads. IssueUp to Win 10 OS build 1607 back in 2016-2017, everything was running well. After installing builds 1703 and then 1709, and still now after the 1809 update (updated a couple of months ago, but nothing changed with that update), when I connect the laptop to external monitors (either to one or two 27-inch, 60-Hz 2K monitors [AOC Q2781PQ] outputting at 2K resolution), either... I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

I've read and tried all relative topics in this and intel forums (e. g: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-920-can-t-connect-to-any-external-mon...), have done all steps mentioned (including firmware, bios and windows update, windows reset, ...) but the problem still persists. Apparently, most users that had faced the same problem been able to get it worked after installing "Type C Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit)" or the BIOS update provided by Lenovo. I installed them successfully but nothing changed. I am sure it is a software issue since there is no sign of any hardware one (all devices are fine as device manager shows and diagnostics app found no problem). It was just working fine until suddenly stopped working (probably after some recent windows update). I would greatly appreciate any help.

Hi,

The way I read the X1YG1 base specs it supports two independent monitors.  Apologies, but I can't quite parse your post.  Does "apart from laptop screen" mean that you want 3 monitors total, or two and the laptops's display is off?

supports external digital monitor via HDMI or Mini DisplayPort;supports dual independent displays;

I've just received my Laptop back from repair and all seems to be well, I had my screen panel replaced, gpu replaced(from 570m to 670m), new hard drive and CPU fan. However the problem I seem to be having is that internal speakers are completely not working.

I can see that bolume bar in for my internal speakers is actually changing but there is no sound. My system is not muted (unless there's some secret button I'm missing out on) No matter what i try it seems that sound will not work through my internal speakers, I've plugged in my Razer headset(Kraken) that works with my other computer but is not even detected when plugged in the Audio jacks of my laptop(Doesnt even pick up the microphone) and this did work before I sent it out for repair. Sound only works through HDMI output into a TV/Monitor.

Now I'm not sure if this some software configuration that I have to do or something physical with the hardware but I would prefer to not have to send it back as it would take a month to get back to me and also the repair company states that if the problem is due to software then they will charge.

I assume it's a conflict that Realtek HD audio manager is having or something but none of my devices show up on the RealtekHD Audio Manager nor do I get a pop up when a device is detected(which is what normally would of happened)

Hey Guys, I have a brand new Thinkpad P52 that seems to be having issues with HDMI audio.Essentially what happens is that when I restart my computer, all is well and sound starts playing from HDMI as expected.  But overtime, if I put the computer to sleep or let the computer idle so that it goes to the lock screen and then turns off the screen, when I return from either state, very often the HDMI output playback device in the Windows Sound playback settings just dissapears and I lose all HDMI audio (video works fine).  I have to restart my computer at this point for it to come back.Sometimes when I resume my computer from either sleep or the screen turned off state, the HDMI audio device will still be there, but the sound quality suffers substantially and sounds very "wavy" instead of a clean crisp sound.  Usually after that state, follows the HDMI audio device dissapearing entirely after a sleep or screen turn off state again. I have all the latest lenovo drivers installed from Lenovo Vantage including the Thunderbolt firmware.  I have even tried this same HDMI setup I have on my older Lenovo W540 laptop and that has no issues whatsoever. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Excuse my English please as it's my second language...I have a 1440p 144hz monitor, I can not choose 1440p as an display option when connecting X1 to it via HDMI, I can only get 1080p in windows settings. In Intel HD Graphics Control Panel however, I can set custom resolution up to 2560*1440 @30hz, anything higher than that won't work, it says "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum badwidth capacity".I couldn't find the specification of the HDMI port on X1 carbon, but some people in the community say it's HDMI1.4 and they can get [email protected]? Then it should be able to handle [email protected] right? Also my cable shouldn't be the problem, since my other laptop can output 1440p @60hz just fine. Is anyone having the same problem?

Is there any way to get higher than 1080p resolution on an external monitor through HDMI from a Yogo 150 14-IKB? I've just bought a monitor that can do up to 2560x1440 @ 60Hz (as it can when connected to my other laptop which has a 16" screen that natively runs 1366x768, using AMD Radeon R5 graphics) but it appears that the Yoga 520-14IKB can't do so. What I've tried so far is to update the drivers on the Yoga for my new monitor, so that Windows 10 doesn't use the default PnP monitor driver, but this didn't immediately unlock any other settings. The default maximum resolution through the output is 1920x1080, which means that pixel size on the external (24") monitor is >1.5x pixel size on my laptop screen (14"). I've looked at the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (as it runs Intel HD 610 graphics), and I can add this extra resolution as a custom resolution, but the monitor claims the signal is out of range when I try the 2560x1440 (60Hz) that I can get from the other graphics chipset. Is there anything else to try?

A:Yoga 520-14IKB HDMI output

Actually, though further inspection on my 15.6" laptop, the output is downsampled in software before going through HDMI at a 1920x1080 resolution, which is what the monitor can use, so it looks like it might be a driver issue rather than anything hardware related.

Hi daproof,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You may need to replace the LCD panel.

You can check on the hardware manual (here on page 63) if you have the tools and skills to change it. You can get the LCD OEM part number here to check online or on service parts center to purchase.

Here is the article guide that can also help.
How to Look Up and Purchase Accessories, Upgrades, and FRU/CRU Replacement Parts

At this point, it is likely a failed lcd backlight as image still is visible onscreen when illuminated but you can try to reseat cables first and check areas you can clean but setting expectation for LCD panel replacement.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

I have tried using both the vga output and the mini display port without any success. I had the same issue when the original screen was connected, the only way I got around it was by closing the lid, which the device no longer has, as it is literally just a motherboard.Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello,I've been running into a fairly consistent problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad P70. It has the Quadro M3000m, and the Xeon CPU option which includes the HD530 graphics. I usually run the graphics in Hybrid mode, since I run into driver compatibility problems running it in Discrete Only.In Hybrid mode, there's some strange behavior. When I use the external HDMI display only, Extended Display, or the internal laptop display only, everything works well. However, when I use "Duplicate Display", it does not work. The laptop display turns on, goes to a very low resolution (1280x720 I believe), and the external display turns off. When I look in the Intel GPU multi-display settings, it says that there are two displays, the laptop display and "virtual display". In the nVidia screen, it shows that while activating the 'duplicate display' mode, the computer tries to connect to both the internal display and this 'analog display' (which is not correct at all), but if I manually disable the analog display, enable the Samsung TV, and then right-click the Samsung TV and click "Duplicate from Display 1", the duplicate display feature works, and the "analog display" disappears from the list. The thing is, ever... Read more
