Upgrade and downgrade issues - Dell inspiron 15-3521

Q: Upgrade and downgrade issues - Dell inspiron 15-3521

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section for this, but I'm working on a friend's Dell inspiron 15-3521 that has been unusable for about a month. The laptop is about 3 years old and came with Windows 8 and he tried to upgrade to Windows 10 when prompted. After the "upgrade", the laptop would boot correctly into Windows 10 about 1 out of 5 attempts and when it did boot correctly, it would ultimately crash without much explanation. He wanted to downgrade all the way to Windows 7(which I have a legitimate copy of) so I booted into a Linux Mint Live distro, formatted the drive, and installed Windows 7. After the installation, Windows 7 booted up fine but was incredibly slow and still basically unusable. Now, after restarting, the computer either restarts at the login screen of Windows 7 or freezes on a black screen after entering login info. Initially I thought maybe the ram was bad and was just running out of memory, but the Linux memtest comes back clean. Now I suspect that it could be a bad hard drive, but it would be great to get more opinions before I continue guessing.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 that came with Windows 8 installed. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and everything worked great. When Windows 10 came out I was reluctant to upgrade, but I finally did right before the free offer ran out. Again, everything worked great (except for now having a dozen user accounts that I do not need – but that’s another story).
After a month or so, Windows 10 did its upgrade and that’s when everything got messed up.
Now, my wi-fi will not even turn on. I click the toggle in Control Panel/Settings/Wi-Fi and it will toggle on and then immediately back off. The only way I can use wi-fi is to use a Cisco USB wi-fi dongle.
I, of course, have Googled till my eyes bleed, but can find nothing that has helped.
Supposedly, this model is on the list tested for Windows 10.
The onboard wi-fi adapter is a Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b|g|n (2.4 GHz)
Anyone have any ideas what to try?

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3521 nearly a year ago. Few weeks back, my touch screen stopped responding. I, having some basic knowledge in computers, tried everything that i could to make it work again, but sadly, haven't been able to kill an ant in the matter.
My System Specifications are:
Model No: Dell Inspiron 15 - 3521 - Touch
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3337U CPU @1.8Ghz
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Video Cards: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 & AMD Radeon HD 8730M
Things I've tried already:
1. Refreshing PC back to Windows 8.
2. Updating all drivers and Windows Updates.
3. Updating to Windows 8.1 again.
4. All windows updates again.
5. Rechecked if any driver update was missing today.(No there is no driver updates for me currently)
Additional Details:
1. There is no Tablet PC settings in Control Panel since i refreshed. (Didn't check if it was before, but it sure would have been there.)
2. There is no Tablet PC Components or any similar thing in add features to windows.
3. There is no Touch Screen compliant device in HID or Mice or other Pointing Device in the  device manager.
4. I have the Intel HM77 driver and the latest BIOS running as suggested by the experts on other threads.
If anyone has any other ideas, please help.
Thank You!

A:Touch Screen Issues in Dell Inspiron 3521

Can you check the touch feature outside the OS.
Run a hardware diagnostics by tapping F12 on the start up Dell logo, Select diagnostics from the list, Once the test is done, use the touch input to select the components on the left pane.
Check if that works & let us know.

I recently updated to windows 10 but the Waves Maxx audio is not working properly. It doesn't start automatically at startup (it is not disabled in task manager) and the audio is cracking both in speaker as well as in all my headphones and earphones. I've reinstalled the driver from Dell's official site several times but nothing works. My windows 10 OS is up to date with anniversary update. In device manager all the drivers are installed.

I wish to upgrade my laptop processor from 3rd gen to 7th gen,  Is it possible on the same old mother board.  Thanks

A:Dell inspiron 15, 3521, i7 3rd gen,

No -- it's not possible to upgrade the CPU at all (it's soldered to the mainboard).  Any upgrade within the third generation requires a replacement of the system board.  Any upgrade beyond the the third generation requires a new system.

My Dell inspiron 3521 won't power up at all. Does the battery have to be connected to get power or does it have to have a fully functioning battery to achieve any power up.

A:Dell Inspiron 3521

The system should be able to power on with the adapter connected, regardless of the battery's presence.
When you press the power button, do any leds come on? What is the issue with the battery? When was the battery working fine last? Are you able to test this battery on another machine or another good known battery on this machine?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
If another adapter works fine, then replace the adapter. If the adapters are loosely fit and sometimes it powers on with another battery, then replace the dc port - http://bit.ly/2egjkJy. Otherwise, the motherboard needs to be replaced.

I am constantly having this problem with my laptop. As I plug in and unplug my headphones throughout the day, I've noticed that after a couple times the bass gets really quiet and almost completely drops out. Since I have some pretty decent audiophile headphones with really great bass, it is super annoying and noticeable.
One workaround I have discovered is to go to the audio settings (either in Windows or the Dell Audio app), and switch the Default Format (the thing with 24-bit, 48000Hz in it)  to something else, play some audio, then switch it back.
A little word on my setup: I have the latest drivers from the Dell download page installed. I am running Windows 10 64-bit with all the updates. I have Waves Maxx audio "enhancements" disabled. My Default Format is usually set to 24-bit 48000Hz, but the problem eventually happens no matter what I set it to. The "headphone size" option is set to "Medium", but as far as I can tell this option does nothing if I do not have Waves Maxx enabled. Switching it also does not fix the problem.
If I play audio using WASAPI (this basically means that the music player takes over the sound card completely, and bypasses whatever audio processing Windows and the driver has) the problem does not happen.
How do I fix this problem? It's incredibly annoying, and most likely has something to do with the audio driver, since this does not happen in Linux, and it did not happen when I was runn... Read more

I am planning to upgrade my Inspiron 15 3521 laptop, and I am planning to do these:

Change HDD to Crucial MX525 SSD
Upgrade RAM to Crucial 16GB DDR3L-1600
Replace CPU

I know that the first two will be easy, but according to this thread, I need to replace my motherboard.
I see that there are multiple models that may be compatible with my current laptop. These are:

3521 (current)

I am planning to buy a 3521 mobo with i7-3537U, but I also wanted to check if I can fit in a 5537 mobo with i7-4500U.

Can I replace my current with the 3521? 5537? not at all?
Also, can I use a DDR3/DDR3L 1866 instead of DDR3/DDR3L 1600? 1866 is cheaper.

My current laptop has the following specs:

Windows 10

I tried with only one ram in each port, the problem persisted. I took off the bios battery and tried to get rid off the "parasite current". This resulted the 2 short beep problem( no memory detected ). I`ve tried almost everything with 5 different rams. I read that the ports might be the problem, but i cannot find spare parts for my laptop(like other motherboard). What can i do to revive my laptop?

Hi there, my sister has a Dell Inspiron (3521), which she bought brand new about 2 years ago. About 3 months ago her battery stopped working, as soon as the power adapter came out, or was unplugged, the laptop would instantly shut off. She bought a new battery but had the same problem.
She took it to one of those computer repair shops and was charged lmost 200 and it's the same now as when she put it in.

When I switch it on I get a warning saying: Warning: The battery cannot be identified. The system will be unable to charge this battery.

The battery is the same as the one that was in it when she bought it, so I doubt that that is the problem.

Could it be a driver problem or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Dell Inspiron 15 3521 updated on Thursday.  After it finished updating it ran for about 30 minutes.  I then received a blue screen of death that just said it ran into an unexpected error.  Went by too fast to get the exact error message.  Restarted and worked fine that night.  Friday morning it ran for about an hour and then suddenly just shut off.  I was unable to turn it back on.  Zero power at all.  No lights - just dead.  Any suggestions?  I tried holding the power button down, removing the battery, reseating the memory, etc.
The laptop was purchased in September 2013.  Everything was working fine and now nothing.  Is it worth having it looked at or repaired? It just seems odd that it happened immediately after updating.
It is full of files, videos and photos that I have not backed up since Christmas :-(  I still have a ton of room so it is not a space issue.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 3521 suddenly has no power.

General troubleshooting:  unplug the system, disconnect the power adapter, and disconnect or remove the battery.
Verify that the LED on the AC adapter or DC plug is ON when it's not connected to the system.   If it's not, replace the adapter with a new one.
Hold the power button for 30 sec.
Remove and reinstall both memory modules and the hard drive.
Plug in the AC adapter.  The power LED should stay on.  If it goes out, there's a short circuit somewhere - replace the DC jack in the system first.  If that doesn't happen (or replacing it doesn't fix the problem), continue:
Power up on AC only (no battery).  If the system will power up that way but won't with the battery connected, the battery is faulty and will need replacement.
If the system still won't power up, the mainboard is bad -- that's at least a couple of hundred dollars just for the part, plus labor if you don't install it yourself.

So, I have purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 (3521) touch from Amazon.com for my kids to use.    It's listed specifically as model:   i15RV-6144BLKhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CRGJKT2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
A chat will Dell has indicated that the max memory that this unit will support is 8GB via 2 x 4GB DIMM chips.
Out of the box, the laptop says it has:

Memory (RAM): 4GB, DDR3L, 1 DIMM, 1600MHz
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i3-3227U processor (3M Cache, 1.9 GHz)

In looking at www.crucial.com it shows that the max memory for this particular laptop is 16GB and the smallest DIMM they offer is 8GB.http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Inspiron%2015%20(3521)&Cat=RAM
The specs on the Crucial RAM are as follows:
DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •   •  Part #: CT3967280

So, my question to the community is DOES this laptop in fact take up to 16GB of RAM?  A tech chat with Crucial assures me that it does.

My plan is to buy a 4GB DIMM however, as I don't need more than 8GB of RAM and I don't want to replace the RAM that is currently in the computer.   Since Crucial doesn't offer a compatible 4GB DIMM, I plan to use this model from Kingston.  Anybody see any reason it won't work?http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CQ35GYE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8... To your question,How much RAM can my computer hold? Most editions of the Windows 7 and  Windows 8 OS are 64 bit. If you are running Starter or Home Basic, your RAM limit is 8GB. The RAM limit for Home Premium is 16GB. If you are running a 32-bit OS, such as Windows XP, Vista 32 or Windows 7 32-bit edition, you have a limit of 4GB of memory. As a side note, that's per slot! A:RE: Dell Inspiron 3521 Battery not charging

Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Based on your description, I would suspect a battery fault. If the adapter and dc port are fine, then test with another battery and check. If another battery works fine, replace the battery. If the other battery and adapter also exhibits the same behavior, then I would suspect a dc port or the motherboard.
If the dc port needs replacing, you would need this part - http://bit.ly/2egjkJy

A:Dell Inspiron 3521 - CPU Beeping Error

Hi sueballoo,
Thanks for posting!
If it is a processor failure, then the only solution would be to replace the processor or the motherboard.  It's more likely that the motherboard is causing the problem.
Since you're out of warranty, you can contact our Out of Warranty department to discuss troubleshooting and costs of repair.
If you are just wanting to get your "stuff" off it, you can remove the hard drive, put it in an inexpensive hard drive enclosure and use it like a usb drive on another machine.

Hello Admins, I have Dell Inspiron 3521.  I bought it in August 2013. Since a month ago, the laptop keep beeping after started up (after the power button was pressed.
It goes like this :
- I press the power button
- it looks like it'll started up, but suddenly it stops, the screen remains black and only the power indicator that lights up.
- it starts to beep one beep at a time,  with some seconds interval.
It has started like this for several months. At first i didn't bother by it, because when it happened, I just force shut down once, then it started like usual. But this month I must put the laptop at sleep if I want it to remain ON. If i ever shut down or restart the laptopa or the battery is dead, it'll only can start up after tens time pressing the power button thena force shut down. Today it really didnt work.
I have try pressing the f12 key after power button. But nothing happen.
Your answer is really appreciated.
And thank you so much.

Hi, Does anyone know approximately what my DL speed should be. My desktop routinely is 88mbps via Comcast. My Inspiron 15 #3521 laptop is 38-41 mbps. The network adapters are Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) & Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller.

Laptop is not what I would call slow, but was wonder about the internet speed being a little lower than half of my desktops 88 mbps. Oh yeah both computers are the same (12mbps) on upload. Perhaps these are normal speeds for the laptop?

I have not tried to use ethernet connection like the desktop.

A:Factory recovery on Dell Inspiron 15 3521

Hi mimran143,
I appreciate that you have made a copy of the system image. However it seems to be not working due to the changes in the partitions. As you rightly mentioned, you can try performing a PC restore (factory default settings) which is in build in the system. Follow the steps below.
You can restore the system to factory state by following the steps mentioned below in a Windows 8 system.
1. Plug in the AC adapter.
2. Point to the right hand corner of the screen to bring up the charms bar.
3. Click Settings.
4. Select ‘PC settings, In the PC settings window, select ‘General’.
5. Once “General is selected, on the right side scroll down to click on ‘Restart Now’ under Advanced settings’
6. In the next screen click on ‘Trouble shoot’.
7. Click the Dell Backup and Recovery icon.
8. The system restarts and comes back up, click ‘Next’ on the Dell Backup and Recovery Screen.
9. The system would be checked to see if the smart repair option can fix the issue, click ‘Next’ once this is done.
10. You will be prompted to select the backup to be used, click the factory image option or select from one of the backups. Click Next.
11.You will be prompted to back up your files, if needed do so by selecting the option ‘Yes, backup my personal files’ (Make sure to have an external backup hard drive handy.) or select No, Erase my files.
12. The system goes ahead and completes the restore of the opera... Read more

Respected All, I buy Brand New Dell Inspiron 15 3521 Laptop 2 months ago. It was working awesome. A few days ago the "Windows Updates Installed". and then I face problem in my Audio. When I start my Laptop, within 5 minutes  the Sound Stop working without giving me any message. When I Disable Audio and Enable again from "Device Manager", it starts working, and then it works till the computer shut down again. When I Shut Down my Laptop and start it again. the same problem occurs. I re-install Audio driver but the problem persists. Please help me out in this regard.

A:Problem with my Audio (DELL Inspiron 15 3521)

There has been a recent Windows update that is causing widespread havoc with audio. I suggest first trying the solutions for that before trying other things. Here are the 2 solutions that forum members have reported so far.
1st POSSIBLE SOLUTIONForum member countiss wrote that it is due to Microsoft....
"Update KB2962407, which that states it fixes "Shortened battery life when an idle audio device is not turned off on a computer running Windows".You do not have to do a System Restore to get rid of the Updates; easier to go to Windows Update, View Update History. On the top of that screen, click on Installed Updates. Then just right-click the update you want to uninstall."
2ND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONForum member natakuc4 says that updating to Windows 8.1 will fix it. He wrote:
"If you are still on Windows 8.0. You should upgrade from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. See the instructions here:http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/upgrading-to-windows-8-1-from-windows-8-0-via-the-microsoft-store/Uninstall the audio and video drivers before the update. After the update uninstall the network and chipset drivers and get the Windows 8.1 (WB64A) drivers.."
You can get the drivers he mentions either from your model's support page after ... Read more

I purchased an INSPIRON 15 3521 K 92 Model (4GB RAM/500GB/Win 8/2GB Graphic Card) two weeks back. Till date it worked fine. However, for last two days its touchpad and the touchpad keys have stopped working completely. Moreover, at times I had to restart the laptop as the keyboard stopped working suddenly. I did reinstall the touchpad driver from dell.com; however, still the problems persist. The name of the touchpad is also missing from the Device Manager listings. I am not sure what the problem is. May I get any help in this regard? I sincerely appreciate your support.

A:Touchpad and Keyboard issues - Inspiron 15 3521 K 92

Hi Omkar,
Please remove the service tag from public view for security reasons.
Inspiron 3521 is shipped with synaptics touchpad. You may press <Fn> + <F3> on keyboard to enable or disable the touchpad.
As you already have tried updating the driver, I would suggest you to uninstall the touchpad driver from Control Panel -> Uninstall a program and restart the computer.
Upon restart, you may try updating the touchpad drivers from Here. Follow the onscreen instructions and restart the computer when prompted.
If the issue persists, please share a screenshot of device manager with Mice and other Pointing Devices category expanded.
Also for the keyboard issue, I would suggest you to try reseating the keyboard (if comfortable) and see if it helps. You may refer to Owner's Manual Here for step by step instructions for reseating keyboard.
Note : Please follow the safety instructions in Owner's Manual before replacing/installing parts.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

my letter keys work and the number keys that run along the top of the letter keys are working too, but the number keys to the side are not working at all, i have push the number lock on and off many times and it makes a sound but all it does when ever i try the numbers out is make the page go up or down or highlight whatever is already typed before it.

i looked to see if there was any post that has the answer to the issue and from them i have tried fn+f3 and alt+shift+numlk but it didn't work,

When I push the power button it won't get to the dell logo often now. It simply starts the fan, the lights of the optical drive and hard drive will flash (looking for the boot drive I assume) and then the fan and hard drive light will shut off and it will make a beep type noise, not in any pattern for any count, it will just beep at a steady interval until I hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off. After many times of trying it might turn on. Once I was able to run the ePSA (the quick and the thorough tests) but it came up as passing in all areas. From what I've seen online I have a issue of no-POST.
When it first started doing this, it would start the second try and it seemed to help if it was on a flat table surface. When it is on I notice no performance issue or other issues. Now it might take an hour to get it going.
What can I try? Where should I be looking? How can I rule components out?

Hi! I have Dell Inspiron 15-3521 and I am using it for atleast three years. This one is bought in Abu Dhabi, UAE and was used by my sister for about a year or two then she shipped it here in the Philippines because I needed it. It has Windows 8.1 when it arrived here. The problem occured yesterday. It was perfectly running when i used it when i got home from school but Chrome was annoyingly kept on not responding. I refreshed the desktop before I reloaded Chrome when I noticed that the desktop icons were not showing up. I shrugged it off thinking my laptop is just being slow. Still annoyed on Chrome, I decided to turn my laptop off and took a nap. Note that I didnt plugged it off. After 3 hours of nap, I turned it on and it actually booted but a black screen. I turned it off and on again for about three times but still a black screen. I tried to turn it on inserting its battery then it showed the Recovery page of Windows saying that Windows didn't load correctly. I turned it off again then plugged it again without its battery. It showed the same page then I asked a friend on what should I do. He told me to try opening it on safe mode. I did but it showed that automatic repair couldn't repair my pc. I did a second attempt to enter safe mode. After about 20 minutes, it booted on safe mode. I then decided that I will just reset it so I back up important files on my USB flashdrive. I tried to reset it but only the drive on which Windows is installed. It worked but after r... Read more

A:Dell inspiron 15-3521 black screen after reset

I'd suggest you run Diagnostic tool to check for any hardware issue that might be causing the black screen on your computer.
1. Turn off your computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F12 key continuously. You should see the Diagnostic tab, please click it. After the quick tests has completed then I suggest you run 'Thorough' test mode on hard drive. Reports back any error code.

When I bought my DELL 3521 some weeks ago, which came with OS Ubuntu, I remember the screen brightness was adjustable by using Fn keys ( F4 / F5).
Since I installed Win7 some days back the screen brightness remain very dull ( may be the lowest setting), which I do not mind for my day to day work. But for my photo and graphic work this intensity is far from satisfactory.
I have checked the internet on this and saw many of you also share the same experience. I followed almost all the advices given in there and since there was no improvement, I downloaded all the drivers from the DELL official website for Win7 and installed them.  Actually then one thing happened, that is now I could see the on-screen brightness and loudness control icons or symbols.  Incindentally the sound (speaker) control works fine (Fn/F10/F11/F12), while the screen brightness indication appears without any response to the keys ( actually it indicates the maximum brightness in the scale and when I try to reduce the scale it reduces by scale/point and stays and would not move any further).  However, this has no change in the brightness of the screen, which as I already told, is low.
I have not yet decided to contact the dealer on this matter which could be a small issue perhaps, which I am uanble to come to terms with yet.
I do not know how to solve this problem. Is this a technical issue or a manufacturing fault? Could anyone help me please. Must be very grateful.

When I run installer for AMD video driver (8730) , my screen goes black for some time (idk if it's normal), then it requires restart. After I restart a black screen appears and it takes a lot of time for windows to load the page where a user types his password to log in. After i type my password and desktop screen appears i have these problems :
1) a strange box of pixels appears on the screen and doesn't move ( something like the picture shows)
2) right click on desktop opens a menu that contains half of lines it has to
3) cannot open Catalyst Control Center
4) when clicking on Configure Switchable graphics it opens Intel HD graphics settings
here are some picture of what i'v got now:
I uninstalled AMD Catalyst Install Manager from Control Panel, then AMD Radeon HD 8730M from Device Manager, and tried to reinstall, but everything is like it was before.
What can I do about this ?
I do also have Dell Audio driver problems, and I posted about it too:

A:Dell Inspiron 3521 - Cannot install AMD switchable drivers

Has the AMD driver worked in the past, or is this the first time you're trying to install it?
If it has not been known to work in the past, open your device manager in the control panel.  Are there two display adapters showing?

I have an issue with my Ati display driver for some time now. Whenever i try to install it, my laptop freezes at 75%-90%. I tried everything!! Clean install, remove all video drivers with DDU in safe mode and then installing both of them...nothing works.
If the installation reach 100% these issues occurs:1) it gives some kind of error with the message that the driver was partially installed2) my laptop freezes while restarting 3) if it restarts successfully a few more issues appear :)).... :    a) when i want to access ati control center nothing happens or it gives an error with this message: No amd driver is installed, or it was not installed properly. Please install bla bla bla..    b) if the control center of the latest amd driver is accessed i can not enter in amd additional settings...when i click it, nothing happens.
I mention that i tried with auto detect mode and manual selecting my driver from amd site.If I try long enough to delete and reinstall the driver it will finally work properly...BUT after around 2 weeks my display drivers from both intel and amd are deleted.
My guess is that the video card is dying but i am not sure. If anyone has suggestions please help ^^
PS: Sorry for my bad english...
