Desktop performance for Windows Aero lower after Windows 7 reinstall

Q: Desktop performance for Windows Aero lower after Windows 7 reinstall

I reinstalled my operating system. All my other performance scores are the same except performance for Aero dropped from 6.7 to 5.7.

I downloaded the drivers for my computer model from Dell and installed them in the order Dell said to. Some of the drivers didn't install, so I moved on until I got to internet and from there I updated automatically. I'm guessing the ones that got skipped might have messed something up?

When I try to update automatically from Dell, these Intel drivers never work. It says they installed successfully but when I scan for updates again they always show up again:

Intel 8 Series Chipset Device Software Driver
Intel(R) Management Engine 9.0 Components Installer

(Intel 8 Series Chipset Device Software Driver also repeatedly shows up as an update on my other computer of the same model, so I don't think this is anything to worry about.)

When I tried to automatically update with an Intel update program, it could not automatically update; I believe it said it was because custom drivers were installed.

This is a new computer, so everything should be working. I'm just trying to get that score up to where it should be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Sorry if I post this under the wrong forum.

So I made a thread a few days ago about having lag issues in Windows 7 but after countless hours and sleep lost of troubleshooting, working my fingers to the bone on over 100 different programs (not literally), I've just reach the point where I'm about to give up.

System specs are on my profile page or attached below, more can be provided if not already.

Problem Description: So essentially my computer in general is lagging. This is not program specific, it's just a general lag. Everything from just dragging the blue highlight boxes around on my desktop to dragging chat boxes around, explorer windows around, browser windows around, it's just a terrible lag. Sometimes it runs smoothly, but every now and then it stutters with lag, and it gets worse and worse each day. At random points too my system audio / network just turns into robot mode, for example I was in a Skype call not 1 hour ago and randomly all of a sudden everybody just turned into robot and the audio stream was stuttering on and off just like a high frequency / fast strobe light.

It's getting to the point where I can no longer do anything. I went on a game and fraps was saying I was getting 70-90 FPS but every second or two it would lag bomb down to about 5-10FPS (without fraps indicating that), and my mouse input would be so delayed, by around 0.5 - 1 second. However on windows basic all of these issues literally don't exist apart from a couple which have now develop... Read more

Not sure if this is related to the driver, but I'm having an issue with the Windows Desktop Manager and Windows Aero.

When I start my computer up, Windows Aero flickers off after about a minute or so, it eventually comes back and stays but I'd like to stop this from happening. When it goes off I use the Aero troubleshooting feature and diagnosis what the problem is. The report says that the Desktop Windows Manager was disable, However I get no prompt of that occurring, and when I checked the the DWM it is set to automatic. As said Aero eventually returns after a few minutes or so, though it's obviously strange that it goes off in the first place with no warning of the DWM being disable or re-enabled. Any help is appreciated.

If the graphics memory is 256MB, it is required to update to the latest driver version and then check this issue again. Please also contact the display card manufacturer for more information.

Hello, a few months back, I use windows update to install a windows update. After, some strange things have hapend. When I booted my computer on, my monitor went into powersave mode and wouldent come out of it, so I switched the port and it worked fine. I then went to play minecraft, I noticed it was very laggy. I checked my system score and it has dropped by 1.1 points for some reason. I tried to use recovery to roll back the update but it didnt make a difference, so I tried to re-install the OS. I went to control pannel -> Recovery -> advance recovery methods and reinstall windows. It restarted, and once it restarted and boots into the part when I am reintalling the OS it it gives an error:
"The unattended answer file contains an invalid product key. Either remove the invalid key or provide a valid product key in the unattended answer file to proceed with this windows installation."
What I have tried:
Re entering the product key
Try to install it many times
reinstalling drivers
using recovery

Any idea?

Thanks

It's not the Window Color you need to change, its the Theme, change it back to the Aero Theme.

Hey everyone

I've recently purchased a Netbook with Windows 7 Starter installed. I absolutely love using 7 (it's a massive step up from XP) but I'm upset about not being able to even change my desktop background and to use Aero.

Does anyone know of any good programs which could allow me to change my desktop background and to simulate (or even to use) Aero on Starter? According to Upgrade Advisor my Netbook is perfectly capable of running Aero. I've heard of a program called Oceanis which apparently can change desktop backgrounds on Starter but I've also read about a lot of bugs which can occur with it so I'm unsure about installing it on my system in case it messes it up.

Thanks in advance

Hello I've been using my Windows 7 Professional for two years now but after restarting my computer one day I ran into a few problems and I can't seem to find an answer on how to fix it.

Suddenly Windows Aero decided to not work, I noticed this when my transparencies were gone. Here are the some of the specs of my computer.

Windows 7 Professional 32-bit edition
i5-760 LGA1156
Nvidia GTX 460
4GB DDR3 RAM
Here is the follow things I did to attempt to fix/troubleshoot.

Ran "Find and fix problems with transparency and visual effects" to attempt to have windows fix it. It said "Desktop Windows is disabled" but nothing happens even when they said they enabled it. Manually starting it at the services menu has no effect as well.
Updated to the latest Nvidia drivers (even tried downgrading once to see if it had any effect)
Switched to an ATI video card to see if it was a video card driver issue. Aero still didn't work so I'm pretty sure it isn't a video card issue.
Updated DirectX
Tried to use a different Aero Theme from the personalize menu.
Ran Windows Experience Index and got a 5.9
System Restore to an earlier date. Still didn't work.
Also after that day something weird happened on my desktop. I seem to have an invisible area to the far left of my screen. It's only on the left and towards the upper area because when I move my mouse there it disappears. (Bottom left is okay because my mouse doesn't move out of the border) I can even drag files and have window... Read more

A:Windows Aero not working and invisible area on desktop?

@kukupo : I had the same problem for one week : no Aero at all and an invisible area at the top of the right monitor. Also, in my case, the "Use Aero Peek to preview the Desktop" option was checked but grayed out (Start Button's properties / Task Bar tab).

I finally find out the culprit : a Mirror Display driver used to transform my iPad as a third screen. It was installed months ago and ran without any problems, but the last Windows Update did replace mygraphic card driver (GeForce) and it seems nor more compatible now.

When I looked at my graphic card in the Device Manager, I saw 3 Mirror Display Drivers : Logmein, Air Display and iDisplay. I uninstalled all of them and Aero was back without even rebooting. I then reinstalled Logmein and it was still working. I didn't reinstalled the others apps, so I don't know exactly which one was causing the problem...

Hope this can help, Sylvain.

Help! Updated drivers via Dell, somewhere along the way Aero is gone, won't run. Upon start up, get message saying "DWM.exe has stopped working and has been closed/ A problem caused the application to stop working correctly, windows will notify you if there's a solution."

Troubleshooters say DWM is not activated, services say it's running, so i restart it, immediately i get the same error message. So DWM will not run and is not running in task manager. The file is still in System 32.

So I just upgraded from a GeForce 7300LE 128MB to an 8400GS 512MB. I have the latest drivers installed and no reverting to older drivers doesn't work. Desktop Window Manager is on some times and yet it does not keep Windows Aero on or sometimes it randomly reverts it to the basic colors. The only way I can fix it temporarily is by using the trouble shooting program for it. I'm pretty sure I have more than enough requirements for it and my system rating is 3.6 which is above 3.0 where Windows enables it. Also, appearently minimizing anything will cause my computer to freeze up for a second or two and sometimes changes it back to the Basic colors.

First of all, apologies for the double posting of this - I initially posted in the Windows 7 forum, but I think this may be the more appropriate place.

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I hadn't booted up in a couple of days (everything was working normally at that time). This morning when I booted up, my desktop was in basic (non-aero) mode and my wireless internet connection was not connected.

A minute or so later, my screen flashed, and then everything was normal (aero desktop, internet connection back).

I looked in event viewer, and there was a section with a whole series of errors I've never seen before:

Some additional information: I checked the application log, and it seems I was also getting a faulting application, but generally just one, scvhost.exe_HomeGroupListener.

So if I scroll through Event Viewer for system errors, I get the whole list of them above, but in applications it seems that it is just the HomeGroupListener (and on one occasion sspsvc.exe).

Additionally, since arriving at work and running the machine much of the day, including several restarts and at least one shut down (and later boot up), I haven't seen the problem again. The only other thing I did was to do a clean reinstall of my video card driver (as Dell tech support suggested a corrupted video driver as the problem).

The WEI is just a reference number that gives you some idea how all your hardware is working with Win7. If you purchased a new video card to get better video for games the question to you is...
Is your video better or worse then with old card?
I don't worry about my WEI number that much.

some people talk about how using a product key twice is illegal, but i believe that is only the case if it's being used on a new different* computer, so i do think i should be able to do this, if it is indeed illegal then i will just have to buy another OS)

It is now high time to reformat however there is no disk. Years ago I was familiar with with procedure to reinstall windows with the system disc but for some strange reason they don't seem to include a disk anymore even when you purchase new at a retail shop. I noticed on the hard drive there appears to be a partition called "Lenovo Recovery", when I click to explore this drive I am faced with a pop up titled "Lenovo Factory Backup Partition Information". I then have two buttons to click, one is "Create Recovery Media" and the other is "Recover Drive Space". I clicked " Create Recovery Media" and after a couple of questions i have three files created, they are: Folder - Boot Folder - Factory Recovery USB.tag WinRE.wim I tried putting these files on a USB drive and then restarting the computing thinking it would reboot into a system installation procedure but it does not and yes I changed the boot configuration in the bios so it would boot off the USB. I then converted these files to an iso file and burned to disk but the computer would not recognize this either as something to boot off of. Am I even on the right path here?

I'd like to add that I've noticed several svchost.exe programs running simultaneously in task manager. There are 7 running at the moment and they range from 2,972K to 33,220K. There are also a total of 45 running processes on my computer right now, and that seems a bit extreme. Anyone have any advice?

I am planning on buying a 7800gs with some extra ram. I currently have cl3 ddr400 ram. If i throw out my current 512 and get corsair 1gb cl2 ram will it give me any noticable performance increase.

A:will cl 3 give me lower performance

I'd be astonished if you saw any difference between CL2 and CL3, other than in benchmarks. Depending on your applications and their memory requirements, increasing to 1gig over 512 "may" give you a performance increase.

As of late, i am experiencing a considerable drop in performance when playing various games. I am using an Alienware M15x notebook with the following specs..

Win 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel i5 540m 2.55 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
6 GB DDR3 RAM
500GB SATAII 7,200RPM HD
I am not sure what caused the drop, but i have noticed that for the first 3-4 weeks with my laptop, i had a much higher FPS on higher setting, than the past 3-4 weeks.

WoW- Dropped from 60-70fps on high settings to 20-30 on medium
Starcraft 2- Dropped from 60fps on high to 20-25 on low and medium settings
Modern Warfare 2- Dropped from 65-70fps on high to 30fps on high

Systemrequirements lab shows max results under the recommended tab for all games still, but i'm not sure whats causing the recent drop. The only significant change that happened since i got my computer is i think a Windows update. Anyone have any idea on what to do?

As the title says, if you have more partitions, does that affect the performance of the computer/hard drive? Thanks in advance!

A:Do more partitions = lower performance?

No. The more partitions you have on an HDD, the less work the "head" has to do to find, move and write information. However, if you make an image backup to the same HDD to one of it's partitions (not advised) the writing process will be slower. Always install a second internal HDD in your Tower/Case. This makes creating an system backup a breeze. Windows 7 has it's own backup utility but there are many on the Internet.

Solid State Drives (SSD): You will not see any slowness in performance if you partition the SSD. There is no head or mechanical parts - just cells.

You reinstalled Windows and have a black screen, can't open programs how are you running Windows update?

Brand and model of the PC?

Did you reinstall using a Windows disc or a recovery partition on the hard drive?

RDP client gives me the message "Remote Desktop Connection has stopped working . . . a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Tried searching for a way to re-install and can't find anything.  Searched MS website to download and re-load client.  Haven't found anything there yet either.  Searched a few forums I visit.

Anyone have any resources?
Many thanks in advance.

Unchecking "Printers" in "Local devices and resources" seems to have resolved the issue for me. Granted...only a workaround, but works in my case because I don't need to print from the servers I administer.

Hello

I installed a new I5 motherboard with DDR3 ram. My previous board had a quad Q6600 with DDR2

My past performance was 7.1, now I got a 5.9. Strange is the lower indice is from my SSD drive that came from 7.2 to 5.9.

Could it be that Windows is evaluationg a new install hard drive instead of the SSD drive?

I tought that I would get a much better output than my previous Asus motherboard @2.4 MHZ. If I regain the same result with my SSD, the Indice will jump to 7.2 while I had 7.1 with my previous instalation

Maybe I need some tweeking

If you're caching data with the SSD and using the Hard drive, it could be because the SSD sata plug is vined by the system.

Might looks like this: HDD with Sata controller 6Gb/s and the SSD Controler reduced to Sata 3Gb/s instead of Sata 6Gb/s. Assuming you're on RAID.

You can check whenever in the Intel Rapid Technology Control Panel what it says about the Sata controler.

Sorry, no deep technical issues discuss here by me.

hi guys i am new here so firstly let me say hello.
i have recently upgraded to windows 7, installed fine and noticed it did not perform as well as XP did, thought it was probably my system as i built it 2 years ago, so i decided to run the Windows Experience test, to see what part of my system was the weakest, i was surpised to see my processor got a score of 1.7, this was a suprise as i thought the processor was one of the stronger parts of my computer, oh it is a Intel pentium 4 631 3GHz, so i have downloaded Intel Processor Identification Utility and here are the results

speed expected: 3 GHz reported:1.43 GHz
System Bus 800MHz reported: 382 MHz

i am confused, shows up in bios as 3 GHz and in Windows shows as 3GHz

any ideas ?
thanks

A:processor performance alot lower than i thought

right i think i may have found the problem the temp of the CPU is on average 70c, seems a little high to me as i checked my lap top and this was 35C, any ideas ?

thanks

Hello. I very recently purchased a ThinkCentre M910s desktop for the company I work for. It came preinstalled with a French version of Windows 7 Pro. As I work in IT, it was not a big deal to reinstall Windows 7 Pro using an English version, even if I had to use another key.  After looking into options to change the regional language (you can't unless you have Windows 7 Ultimate, apparently), I decided to put in a fresh hard drive (SSD instead of the SATA that came with the computer) and do a fresh install of English Windows 7 Pro. The install proceeded as expected, until I got to the Region language select screen. There are three dropdown menus for Language to install, Time and currency format and keyboard/input method.  Once it gets to this screen, my cursor disappears and my mouse and keyboard are not able to input anything. It appears to be frozen. I've used an official MS Windows 7 Pro install DVD, a USB installer made with the official Windows DVD and USB installer creator, using an ISO downloaded from Microsoft and I made a second, slipstream USB installer. All these methods arrived at the same result, a lock up at this region selection screen. Google search didn't provide much help. I suspected that Lenovo has somehow region-locked this computer with Windows 7 Pro, though I can't imagine how. The hard drive I'm using is a fresh out of the package Samsung SSD and the original drive isn't plugged in.  In frustration, I tried ... Read more

I am playing Civilization IV on my rig, before the update of the drivers there was slight clipping on 3d movies in game, but everything ran smothly. After the update, the clipping has gone away, but now the videos run very choppy! Like it plays 5 frames, frezes for 15 secounds than plays another 5 frames. What would have cause a downgrade in preformance like this? Is there a forseeable fix? Thanks guys!

Hi! I have the following problem:
After only one wake up of the PC (resume from sleep) when I close an opened window the Aero close effect seems to freeze on the last frame for 3-4 seconds. I am using the latest updates. This has been so ever since I installed Windows 7. I am not fully sure what could be causing this, and whether Aero is the case. It might be something else. If I close an opened Photoshop, since the Aero close effect cannot be applied on the Photoshop window, the app closes, but my mouse freezes for 3-4 seconds. Does anyone have any idea what causes this? I have tried several things like disabling/closing open applications, closing all gadgets trying a new theme... No avail.
Can you please help? This doesn't seem to happen every time I close, but it's incredibly annoying when it does happen!!!

A:Performance slowed down by Aero

Can I assume from your description of the issue that this only happens after a sleep cycle - not from a clean start?

If this is the case then it would point to an incompatibility between the OS and the Motherboard, First thing to try is to see if there is an update available for your motherboard drivers, and/or your system BIOS - these are the usual cause of this type of issue.

If you are running the latest updates then some tweaking with the Bios ACPI settings may cure the problem

I cant reproduce the pop up my self now, because I also received it way too many times usually when I Alt+Tab allot and also if I did not restart Pc at least once a day but I might have fixed it some how but I'm not sure what exactly I did to solve it:

Ok I think this is what I did to solve this: "aero performance warning"

1.Go to this menu after you get that pop up again and have selected do not show again.
I'm sure you should be able to find it, attachment1.

2.Select adjust for best performance, then click apply, then select let windows choose what's best for my computer, then click apply, then select adjust for best appearance, then click apply.

3.Notice the differences for your particular pc hardware on the various selections.

Hi all,

I have Win7 64-bit with Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics and 2GB RAM. My system is running smoothly and quickly, but I was wondering if disabling aero would make my system run faster? I have tried it before and haven't noticed much of a difference, and a lot of other forums say that it doesn't increase performance, and some say it does increase performance. For my hardware, would it make sense to disable aero or not?

A:Does disabling Aero improve performance?

With anything like this although there may be a measurable difference when disabling the Aero interface it is the perception that actually matters.

As you have stated you did not see any difference so it is realy a moot point

If you are performing graphics intensive tasks which would require all of the graphics processor power to operate, then disabling aero may give you a perceptible improvement,

Whilst running non graphics intensive operations the graphics processor power used to provide aero is merely using an unused resource so can IMO be left running

Yeah, if you don't have a graphics card and just have the onboard graphics then it might not be enough to have aero enabled. You have the minimum video memory requirements for Ultimate so you would probably have to get a graphics card.

Try right clicking on the desktop and click Personalize- windows color and appearance- then open classic appearance properties and have windows aero highlighted asnd click ok. See if it comes back.
