Tamper protection & Supervisor password

Q: Tamper protection & Supervisor password

Hello there guys, I just to start this topic because both Lenovo Support and the store where I bought this laptop didn't still answer as today. even though my laptop has still full warranty? My problem was that I activated Device Guard in BIOS which automatically activated a lot of other options, like the Supervisor Password, but the "funny" thing about it, is that it didn't asked me anything at all... so I had to type no password. Not knowing Device Guard so well I thought this was a normal behavior and indeed it worked as always for like 3 weeks! Then since I wanted to try to boot Clonezilla to make a full backup of my system, I tried to boot my USB-Stick which didn't work because of Device Guard. Then I decided to deactivated that in BIOS, but for the first time ever the BIOS really asked me for this Supervisor Password, which I didn't know, so I tried 2 times something random (to try if there was a default one active) and nothing worked, then I gave an empty password and strangely enough it worked out... but all the options to change something connected to security were grayed out. So, since I though this was a wanted security feature from Device Guard, I went on and searched online for further solutions. There I found out that one can also use this Lenovo BIOS app from the Desktop to modify the same settings one could normally just through the BIOS. But guess what? To all tries to modify anything, I got the response "Access Denied" even to settings that had absolutely nothing to do with security. So I just decided to reboot the computer in the hope to have somehow better luck... And then I got it... in fact, I was locked out from accessing both the BIOS and the operative system! I tried the blank password and other possibilities but this time nothing worked out. Then I read online about a few solutions like to hard reset the machine, but I also didn't want to try the more "extreme ones" for the sake of the still active warranty. Therefore, I just opened the bottom cover for 2 reasons, the first one is that the first article I read online told me, you have actually to really open the bottom cover to press the little black hard-reset button (I discovered just later, you don?t have to) and the second one was because because of the hard disk. Of course, not needed to say, that also didn't do a thing against the super mighty Supervisor Password and thereafter it actually started to complain with me because I opened the bottom cover and now I had a "Tamper Detection Problem", which basically just changed the error message, but gave me the exact same problem as before: not being able to access anything without giving this phantom Supervisor Password, which I never was asked to give, in first place. Update: just now basically I had a talk with Lenovo Support, that first told me that for security advancement reasons, on more recent Lenovo?s models, one cannot hard-reset the Supervisor Password anymore, and then told me that, in these cases, one can only change the motherboard and added that I would have to pay for this anyway no matter the warranty, "Because Lenovo doesn't cover forgotten password"? after I clearly stated that I never create this Supervisor Password I was asked for, they said, that, maybe, an exception would be possible and then the costs would be included in the warranty? So I wrote here this post, also because I'm curious of how it goes on and to let the Lenovo Support understand even better my problem, since I couldn't explain completely in just 1000 letters, which is the limit for their official "Support Form".

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm getting a Symantec Tamper Protection Alert each time I reboot my computer. When I try to click on the Symantec icon in the taskbar, it states that the file is infected. After a while, an alert appears on my screen and it begins to flash non-stop. When this happens I can not do anything on my computer. I also get a security alert in the taskbar that states that the following files are infected (1)savui.exe, (2) symcorpri.exe and (3) rundll.exe. I have been unable to catch all of the information within the prompt that flashes on my screen but I have been able to make out some of the info.

Hello TopicRunning NIS11 and no prob Disable Real Time via rt.click ICON....Disable AutoProtect, Disable Smart Firewall, and for good measure Turn On Silent Mode. My query is about Norton Product Tamper Protection. Does Norton Product Tamper Protection need to be OFF... Does Norton Product Tamper Protection need to be disabled as part of Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs.Posted same question back in June....no answer. So, I'm trying again. Thanksbjm_

A:Norton Product Tamper Protection

Norton Product Tamper Protection (included in Norton 2006 and later products) is a security feature enabled by default that prevents outside programs (unknown, suspicious, or threatening applications) from making changes to the Norton software. NPTP protects NAV processes so other processes cannot access them (inject code or modify thread execution), it doesn't matter that current user has permission on them he won't be able to access Norton Anti-virus processes. This security feature can prevent Windows System Restore from changing Norton files, resulting in a "Restoration Incomplete" message and you may need to Temporarily turn off Norton Product Tamper Protection.Disabling your anti-virus programs is sometimes necessary when using specialized tools in order to ensure they do not interfere with the fixes they are designed to perform. It is also necessary to prevent the detection of those tools as a threat by the anti-virus which may attempt to remove them. If you are following instructions to disable a Norton product in order to receive assistance with malware removal, it would not hurt to disable this feature as well. Most security fix tools do not modify an anti-virus program but this feature may detect certain actions by the fix tool as suspicious and prevent it from working properly.

How do you reset the supervisor password in windows XP. I did as the manual said, which was disconnect the PC and move jumper from pin 1-2 to 2-3. Boot up and shut down at the desktop. Press the power on button, replace the jumper to 1-2, then restart the PC. It didn't work. I have also tried removing the CMOS battery. Help would be appreciated.

When trying to choose (with F12) a different boot device than 1st harddrive (e.g. CD/DVD, USB-Stick, SD-Card), the system starts only form the built in harddisk. When trying to enter the BIOS (with ESC followed by F1) one can see just a very small selection just of the 1st BIOS page.

All further details (e.g. Boot Priority/Sequence) are not accessible. There is NOT set a User password and/or a HDD password.
When pressing the INS key before switching on the notebook, it asks for a supervisor Password. Someone has obviously set it and I don't have it. With the normal Toshiba Utilities (e.g. "Assist") it's not possible to remove it, also the LPT-Port connector or the Boot diskette (1st 5 Bytes of 2nd sector modified) doesn't help.

What can resolve this problem.

Hi, I didn't really find the answer I was looking for so here I go: I bought thinkpad yoga 460 that was previously in demopool(nbwn.de). After using it for 4 months I noticed that it has a BIOS supervisor password set and I couldn't get in BIOS. I sent it back, but none of the passwords they usually set worked nor did the one that was given by the previous customer. I definitely haven't set a password of my own, nor could anyone have done it while I have been in possesion of the laptop.  The interesting thing is that when trying to enter BIOS, it asks for fingerprint first which is mine interestingly, although I set one only in windows and after that it asks for the supervisor password. So is it possible that I have unknowingly set the password for BIOS through windows?

While I have not used that exact model, most BIOS passwords can be cleared by opening the case and removing the CMOS battery for a few seconds. It looks just like a big watch battery on the motherboard. Good luck!

My last Thinkpad W500 had an option in the BIOS for the Hard Drive password.  I see no option in the P70 UEFI Firmware.  Does the Supervisor password automatically  send a password to the storage devices?  If so, does it work through the Intel RST RAID1 as well? I'm running four storage devices in my P70.  Two Samsung 850 EVO M.2 using the Intel RST RAID1 for UEFI, Windows, and /boot for Linux, and two 960GB SanDisk SSD's for my Linux rpool ZFS mirror. It would just be nice to know for certain that the passwords are enabled on the drives now as well.

A:P70 Supervisor Password For Storage Devices

Supervisor password is not related to HDD password.

From my quick check here, as long as "RAID Mode Option" is set as "Enabled" and "M.2 SSD" (regardless of whether drives are configured in an array or not), the HDD password option goes away.

I need to ask a BIOS guy about this.

It is not possible to set a password with the WMI interface when a password does not already exist.  This is for security reasons.  Otherwise it would be possible to have malware which runs in Windows, sets passwords that you don't know, and locks you out of your system. It can be done in DOS.  Some customers boot a DOS disk as part of their unboxing procedure to set a known password.  Then they can change it by WMI later (if they want to).  Some large customers order their systems from the Lenovo factory with a known password installed, talk to your account manager if you fall into that category.

In the BIOS I set the password for supervisor and user but it is not getting activated. I do not know whether anybody has disabled it permanently. how to get it activated. Is there any command in the c prompt I should give. Earlier it was working.

In the Thinkpad BIOS, is there any way to access the pre-boot environment with only the supervisor password if a HDD password is also set? I note that at least on my machine (X1 Carbon 5th Gen), with both a supervisor password and a hard disk1 user password set (I have set different passwords for each), I am always prompted first for the HDD password to enter any pre-boot environment, including:BIOS (pressing F1 at Lenovo screen)the boot order menu (pressing F12 at Lenovo screen)the boot options menu (pressing enter at Lenovo screen)However, for any of these functions, I am not accessing the disk drive and not booting into the drive, but rather trying to access only the pre-boot environment in the BIOS. So why does the system ask for the HDD password? I can see a scenario where perhaps one needs to boot via USB for troubleshooting, or the HDD password is forgotten or some other issue where only the BIOS needs to be entered and not the disk drive.  Is there perhaps a certain key press at the HDD password prompt to switch to a "BIOS only" mode? (I tried the various function keys at the disk drive password prompt, but it didn't do anything) Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I am trying to change my supervisor password on IE6 but I can't remember my password even with the hint. I've seen the posts about deleting the password, but how do you change the password without deleting the action all together?

Thanks

A:How do you CHANGE supervisor password not deleting it

Welcome to TSG mo reb

You would probably be better off deleting the password and then putting in a new one. You'd need the old password to be able to change it anyway

Hi

I am wanting to send out either a tool or a script that will check all the desktops and laptops in my clients organization for a BIOS Supervisor password. They are all Lenovo Thinkcentres or Thinkpads running XP Pro. I think this is possible as i have IBM Standard Asset Manager installed on my Thinkpad and it scans for a Power On password and a Hard Drive password. I'm having trouble finding anything on this as every search i have done brings back info on cracking the passwords! There isn't even that much info about IBM Standard Asset Manager. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a bind. I'm working on a computer that needs the boot order changed, so I can install an OS upgrade (2000 to XP Pro) and I can't get into the BIOS without the supervisor password. The individual who had/worked on the computer before has long gone, so that option is out. The default stuff won't work (admin, exec, password...and so on). I seem to remember that you can dislodge the battery, or switch the jumpers (although different motherboards might have different stuff), but It's been several years since I've had this problem and I can't remember the solution.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

A:BIOS lockout...need supervisor password

Not quite sure that'll be crackable. It'll depend on the mobo.

My friend can't log onto the internet, he was just connected recently, everytime he tries there's this message saying:"Sorry the content advisor won't allow you to see this site, " and it is also asking for a Supervisor Password so the site can be viewed. We have tried all necessary passwords and tell you what, he had never set any passwords, I'm thinking of formating the Harddisk and reinstalling windows but I believe there should be other alternatives available.all the connections and LAN settings whatever are just fine, its only the above that is a problem now.is there any way to bypass or disable this password thing.I tried but its still insisting for the password thing.maybe its a virus (I believe) that must have altered the registry. Please help us get out of this mess......!!!!!!

A:Supervisor Password For Content Advisor

Shut down Internet Explorer. Search for a file called ratings.pol. Rename it ratings.old.You may need to reset your Content Advisor settings one more time,(Tools/Internet Options/Content tab). Alternatively, see here:kellys-korner,Windows XP from A-Z. Under "C" scroll to Content Advisor for info on how to turn it on and off and to modify specific settings.

Hello there, I set my supervisor password long time ago, I still can use my laptop with hard drive password , but now I want to remove the hard drive password. I can not access BIOS to remove the hard drive password. So,Is there any solution? I still have time on my waranty.... Thanks

A:I forget BIOS Supervisor Password

There is no solution to a lost supervisor password other than replacing the motherboard.  As far as the HDD password, it is encrypted in the BIOS but the encryption algorithm is the same on most models of a similar age.  (You don't say what model you have.)  If you have another machine or anything T400 or newer with an ultrabay, you can remove the password there

I recently acquired a Lenovo W530, however on startup it is asking for a password to move forward. I got this password from my supplier, however when I go into the BIOS to turn off the password protection, it says 'Can't remove when Supervisor Password is set' - meanwhile the Supervisor password change option is greyed out. Is the password I have only the Power On password, with a separate Supervisor password that I don't have? Is there any way to remove the Supervisor password if you don't have it (other than replacing the motherboard)?

A:Supervisor Password greyed out in BIOS

Power on PW and Supervisor PW are different from each other, you can open your computer using power on PW but not on the other. I suggest you to contact the manufacturer directly and most of the time they can deactivate that PW on their end.

I recently replaced this mobo with a used one and have a new HD. I never set any passwords on it as I am the only one with access. Yesterday I was going through the user guide and following the supervisor password setup I found that a supervisor password was already present.
I tried toshiba as a default but I think its probebly from the person who had the boiard originally.

What are my options to resolve this? I'd like to feel comfortable about my machine. Contacting the seller occurs to me. Nothing else.

When I boot into bios via esc and F1, it wont let me go to any other pages, says the supervisor password is registered but doesn't prompt you to enter a supervisor password to make any changes. I have upgraded the bios version to 2.0 but that hasn't made any difference. I need to change the boot order but can't get into it to change it.

Does anyone have any ideas? How I can force it to ask me for the supervisor password? Or let me go onto the other pages?

Thanks

Hello,I've recently bought a used Lenovo ThinkPad L440 and it has a supervisor password which prevents me to modify anything on the BIOS. Is there a legal and easy way to clear it since the former owner doesn't know the password either? Thanks.
