how to install windows server 2016 on a RAID 0 (stripe) partition

Q: how to install windows server 2016 on a RAID 0 (stripe) partition

I am trying to install Windows Server 2016 Datacenter (new installation) on a RAID 0 (Striped Drive). The RAID system (Hardware RAID; Gigabyte z390 D) is configured on two SSDs (1 TB each).

Windows installer detects the RAID-Drive (of about 2 TB) and can create partitions on the drive and format them normally. The installation, however, is not possible on this drive (windows can not be installed on this drive).
I tried to download the preinstall-RAID-drivers and add them to the installer using USB-stick but it does not solve the problem.
I am not sure whether I missed something at this point or even if this is possible to be acheived anyway.
I appreciate your help.
Best regards

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I count on your support.
I am currently trying to install Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Edition using Windows Deployment Services on two discs 136.12gb raid 1, but this will not let me because it says I need at least 150GB HDD to proceed with the installation, the same method is applied in virtualized machines in hyperv and Proxmox and does not throw me any error. (see attached image)
The server details are as follows:
DELL poweredge r610 128gb ramintel xeon 2.67ghz 6 core
4 hdd en raid 0 each independent:hdd 931gbhdd 931gbssd 446.42 gbhdd 1862.50 gb
2 hdd both raid 1:hdd 136.12 gbhdd 136.12 gb
I count on your support.
Thankful in advance.

Hello Guys I need the experience of some of you relating to the installation of Windows 7 on a GPT partition.
My Boss  gave me a Dell Precision T5810 workstation, and for all I know it came with a factory configuration with three disks 2TB configured in RAID 5, but without Operating System.
He asked me to install Windows 7 and so I tried it but still did not succeed.  On initial installation I provided the RAID controller driver but after that  I am not allowed to do anything on the disk partition.
What I find is the following partitions:
Disk 1 Part 1 ESP 500M
Disk 1 Part 2 DIAGS 40GB
Disk 1 Part 3 OS 2 GB
Disk 1 Part 4 UNALLOCATED SPACE 3700 gb
As mentioned on any of the four partitions i can't do anything  even eliminate them,  and I get this error:
Windows can not be installed to the this. The selected disk is of the GPT Partions.
Now my doubt is Windows 7 can not be installed on GPT partitions and I have to convert force into MBR?
The Four partitions found in your opinion were created when the RAID 5 was configured?
If i have to convert to MBR i can delete all the partition in order to installa Windows?
Thanks for the GIOvanni

Okay, I am going to create a RAID 0 Stripe set on my PC, using 2 40 GB hard drives. If this is successful and I feel its beneficial, I am going to move to a 4 disk array using another 2 disks. (All HDDs are identical size, model, make, etc....)

My motherboard is an IWILL KA-266 R with an integrated RAID controller, but if I get to like this I might invest in a more expensive PCI IDE RAID controller card.

My question, to all of those with a home RAID system, is this: What stripe size did you use?

Please bare in mind that the partition created from this array is going to be used for CD and DVD rips, DivX encoding, downloading large files to. Therefore, I am tempted to stray away from the suggested notion of pick the smallest stripe size possible because I will not have a lot of small files on the partition which will occupy this array.

The partition will likely contain a lot of Mp3s as well, but lets remember that the average mp3 is about 4 MB or so. Its nothing like the size of the smallest stripe size available, which is 64K.

I am not really sure what decision to make, and so am asking for advice here.

Its not often that I do that, so here is your opportunity to impress me.

Here is some extra information on the problem:

Ok, I don't have any experience with RAID arrays, but lack of experience hasn't stopped me for giving my .02$ before, so why start now

Given the information you gave us, bigger strip size is GoodTM

You actually gave the answer in the text from Anandtech:

Now let's move to the same array with a 1024KB stripe size. When writing a 4KB file, the RAID array in this case does essentially nothing. Since 4 is not divisible by 1024 in a whole number, the RAID controller just takes the 4KB file and passes it to one of the drives on the array. The data is not split, or striped, because of the large stripe size and therefore the performance in this instance should be identical to that of a single drive.

Reading back the file results in the same story. Since the data is only stored on one drive in our array, reading back the information from the array is just like reading back the 4KB file from a single disk.

The RAID 0 array with the 1024KB stripe size does be... Read more

Hi, im going to be setting up a RAID 0 with two 120 GB Western Digital SATA hard drives with an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe mainboard. Im going to be using a Dual boot between Win98se and WinXP pro, I will be using WinXP pro a lot more though.

I've been doing research as to what stripe size i should use. Some say that 64k seems good for the average user while a lot of other places say 128k is better. Which one would you prefer for my situation?

Specs: Windows XP, P4, Dell poweredge 400sc (intel-made board, 875p, pc only 6 months old), two maxtor 120gb ultra series ATA/133s, raided together as one 240gb hd by using raid 0+2 striped, promise fasttrak100 made from regular ATA/100 controller card (by soldering 1 wire in and updating the bios(common procedure as seen on the internet), worked flawlessly for 4 years so far).

I came back to my computer seeing it booting up. After reaching the black Windows XP screen with the loading bar at the bottom, a blue screen with a bunch of alphanumeric strings flashes by then quickly restarts. It goes by too fast for the human eye even with careful watching.

After rebooting itself, it asks if I would like to go into safe mode. I tried all modes of booting, but the same thing happens.

I tried to reinstall windows, but after providing the promise fasttrak100 raid drivers to the setup, it recognizes the disk as a brand new partition with 100% space available. This is clearly not the case since it has Windows XP it is booting into. So I skip the reinstall, fearful of screwing up the partition or data.

I next install a fresh XP on a spare HD, switching the raid over to slave in an attempt to access the drive from an outside source. Once I get to the desktop, I attempt to access the raid drive, and it says (disk not available--continue, retry, cancel).

The data recovery programs I tried also tell me the disk is not available.

What is going on? There has to be some kind of data beca... Read more

Hello All,
Please forgive me if this is an often discussed problem, I searched briefly, but didn't find answers.

I built my first system about 3 years ago from a new Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard with an AMD A64 X2 4400+ Athalon processor. I also installed 2 western Digital 250GB SATA hard drives. I configured the drives into a RAID 0Stripe array. I installed Windows XP Home Edition (currently upgraded to SP3), and the system worked pretty well with just few problems for a long time.

Last weekend I tried to start the system, bit it failed the POST. I decided to rebuild and upgrade the system. I bought and installed an Intel DG45ID motherboard and an Intel Q8200 Core 2 Quad processor along with 4GB of memory. After setting up some BIOS options on the new system, I entered the RAID set up utility, but before I completed the RAID Volume setup, the system warned me that completing the operation would erase all data on the existing drives, so I escaped before completing the task.

I would like to know if there is a way to get the new system to boot from my existing hard drives or if it is possible to back up and restore the data from my existing dives.

I have a Dell Power Edge server with a C: drive that is too small. The RAID array is about 40GB but only 9 GB was given for the C: drive and it has run out of space so I cannot install service packs, extra software, etc. The remaining space is an F: drive with the "data" on it. What method should I use to extend the partition, I am thinking of just moving all of the F: drive to an external hard drive and then deleting the F: drive and trying to extend the partition in Windows Disk Manager, but I wonder if that will even work, or if there is a better tool out there to use to manage these partitions. I would like to preserve the Windows installation and everything on the C: drive if at all possible. I dont care if I have an F: drive, if I can just get a big enough C: drive, that will be fine. Any advice?

I have seen this question being asked a few times already. I just bought 2xSamsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives and I created a dynamic striped partition with MBR in comuter management. If I try to install win 7, after dvd boot-up, will I be able to select the partition and install windows on it ? I know all about the advantages and disadvantages of using software raid 0. But, my question is simple. Can you just install an O/S on that type of partition (will it be detectable?) or do I have to buy a "fake raid" controller or boot some type of application first to make it detectable everytime I boot up my computer ? Thank you

OK, I'm probably being stupid (Monday moment) and I did look elsewhere in the forums for the answer but...

I have a new server:

Promise Ultra ATA100 SX6000 6cH RAID PCI
4 * 60GB ATA100 IBM 7200RMP Hard Drives

I have configured the RAID array to 4 HD RAID 0+1 so I should have a 120GB "hard drive"

I am trying to install Windows NT Server 4.0 from either CD or floppy (have tried both with same results). I get to a certain point (after loading the driver for the Promise Ultra ATA100 SX6000 RAID card using the "S" option) and the install says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer" and requires that I reboot and try again.

I'm probably missing something REALLY simple, please help me out...

The NT never asks me about formatting the hard drive. DOS's fdisk will recognize the hard drive but formatting a boot partition with fdisk didn't help.

I am trying to perform a fresh install of XP Pro on a completely reformatted RAID 0 array ("striping") composed of two identical 160gb EIDE HD's. I have gone through the following steps a couple of times: (1) ran setup from the XP disc, loading the RAID files when prompted, (2) deleted the existing partition, (3) requested a new install, which setup informed me would require the entire disk to be reformatted (I didn't create a new partition, on purpose). I noticed that the install program would not allow me to reformat 8MB of disk space, which it apparently reserves for installation files. The formatting took >24 hrs so I was never around to see what happened after it finished, but what I did see (in a DOS-like screen, white on black) was a "HAL.DLL is missing/corrupt" message.

Since then I have gone into the XP install disc's recovery console and tried re-installing XP over the existing (incomplete) install, ignoring the warning that that wasn't a good idea. Same 'hal.dll' message appeared after the XP files are copied onto the HD and the system reboots. I also deleted and then rebuilt the boot.ini file. Also attempted to copy hal.dll from the install disk's i386 folder but recovery console doesn't see my cd-rom drive. Anyway, I can see via the recovery console that hal.dll is there, and I'd be surprised if it was corrupt since this is a fresh install. I'm using the original disc from Microsoft, btw, not a copy.

by another KB. This is because a security consultant has advised us to install both of this KB to prevent vulnerabilities but since it was released back in 2017, I suspect there must be a newer KB that supercedes it
2) Can advice what KB I need to download regarding this 2 bulletin ID CVE-2017-5715 and CVE-2019-11135? Can't seem to find it after much googling

Thanks in advance for the help

I was wondering if there are any known issues or any compability problems if I want to run windows 2016 Server on a Lenovo ThinkPad T480 20L5. It's meant to act as a probe to monitor traffic in a server room but needs to be small and mobile. Hence my question. Thanx =) Magnus

I needed to install .NET 3.5 on Server 2016 but have hit all of the roadblocks and need help. Here is what I have tried so far...

I tried to add the feature via the server manager but it ended with code 0x80070002. I did have to provide a path to the sources\sxs folder for the cab file which I expected but that didn't help.I tried using the DISM powershell command to add the feature, both using the source location and also using /All so that it downloads the files from Windows Update. The end result was the same as #1 attempt - 0x80070002.I made sure all updates for the OS have been applied and that updates for 'other Microsoft products' was checked. this made no change in the error.I checked the installed packages via powershell and it shows 3.5 as removed, which again is expected for Server 2016 as they intentionally left it out but provided the cab file in the install media.I have executed a clean sfc /scannow with no errorsI have run a clean dism package commandI have tried installing under a fresh admin user profileI have researched for around 3 hours on the forums so I look forward to the various input
I have uploaded both the DISM and CBS logs. I started fresh with both logs so they contain only details related to a single attempt t install via the server manager.
Thanks for the help!

Hi, we are becoming more and more frustrated with the forced windows updates. These may help home users but professional products like servers are not for everyday users and sometimes require alot of configuration to get legacy applications to work.
Windows will at times force updates no matter what we choose in respect to disable them. It is NOT up to Microsoft to determine if or when the servers I am responsible for need to be patched. Any reading and research we have done here has only yielded the
ability to prolong the updates. Once installed over 50% of the servers give an endless spinning circle and require restore or rebuild, this has become unacceptable and has forced us to start testing our applications with different Linux flavors.

Is there a way to STOP the updates indefinitely?

I am currently having an issue were Windows 7 computers can not connect to Server 2016 (domain). Right away I get a "The logon attempt failed".
I know that user information is correct, because I can connect using any Windows 10 computer. I have tried this from multiple Windows 7 computers, they all give the same error. I don't have any problems at all with Windows 10.

So, this seems to be isolated to Windows 7.
Has anyone seen this or know how to get around this issue?

I appreciate your help!

Ok guys, I think my brain is shot because I'm not sure what to do here.

From memory:
6 9.1GB drives (4 on one scsi controller, 2 on another). HP NetRAID. Would like to setup the 2 to use as the OS (raid 0) and the other 4 (raid 5) for something else.
The problem is that whenever we try to install NT Server, it will only let us create a partition of 1024MB. I know NT has annoying limitations. I did find http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127134 which may explain why we're having the prob (except the drive is being detected but only 1024 available for partition) but I need some help with the solution. I didn't see anything in the NetRaid configuration that would assist but I could be blind!
NT Server was originally installed in this system with one large array so I know it's possible.

Thanks, guys!!!

Historically I've used the following syntax with NetMon to determine which switch/switchport each of my server interfaces are connected to:

nmcap.exe /network "<interfacename>" /DisableLocalOnly /capture SNAP.EtherType == 0x2000 /StopWhen /TimeAfter 2 min /file "<filename>.cap"

With MMA, I can just do a filter for LLDP, and get the same information, at least on my Windows 10 laptop that is.  When I run a capture either locally on a Windows 2016 server, or remotely against
a Windows 2016 server there are no LLDP packets captured.

Am I doing something wrong?
