W7 activation -- new MOBO fine but LAN connection wants activation

Q: W7 activation -- new MOBO fine but LAN connection wants activation

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Cheers
jimbo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have found many threads about this (common) problem. My motherboard died, and I replaced it with a new one, a new processor, and added an ssd while I was at it. The old C: drive is intact, but not installed - so I could potentially reinstall it and and use it temporarily. But I would like to have a new install present. So I did a new install with my old Windows 8 pro disk and key. It did not activate. I followed the instructions here Activate Windows 8 by Phone and after reading the string of numbers the recording told me my product was not valid. I did not hang up, as it says at the end of the instructions, but microsoft did. I can't seem to find a simple support number to call and talk to an actual rep to tell them what happened.

I would like to do that. But I guess that I could reinstall the old HDD with the previous (activated) installation of Win8 on it and deactivate it? Would that allow me to then remove the old HDD and boot from the SSD and have my key work, or activate by phone?

It seems like it would be easiest to just talk to a rep, as that solution worked for many people on this forum with the same problem it appears. How could I get a Win8 activation rep or tech support on the telephone?

TIA!

CRaig

Are there any other pitfalls I might encounter with this replacement?

A:Mobo swap causing re-activation issues

The major limitation of an OEM license is that it cannot be transferred between motherboards - it's locked to the first one on which it is activated.

If you're lucky, and get a friendly Activation operator on the day you try, you may be able to persuade them to allow activation on the new motherboard - otherwise, you're SOL.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Hi Gents,

Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.

During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.

Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.

Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?

Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

I restored the backup image and I activated ATI , offline, I then received a message saying thanks successfully installed. When I access ATI now I get the same box asking for activation again. the options are Try out, Buy, Activate, Cancel . I was thinking of reactivating online , but am wary of further messing up the install . I have not registered the product yet , Had a look at the Acronis register page ( they tell you Not recommended to access the page) ? Any ideas with this one ? options uninstall , reinstall? Try activate online? Anyone experienced this problem?

Heres the situation. My brother bought a new laptop with vista, but he didnt realise he had to activate it. When he brought it to my house it had stoped working (because it had ran out of trial period time) i ran the laptop and it asked for the activation code which i typed in from the bottom of the laptop it then asked to connect to the internet and this is where the problem occurs i took the network cable out of the back of my desktop PC (on which the internet works perfectly fine) and slotted it into his laptop so i tried then letting it connect to the internet and activating but it could not access the internet ive tried several things but i cant actully access windows to mess with any settings. He said when he had the laptop at uni a few days before he left for the summer the internet was working fine on th elaptop (but the univercity's internet would be running through LAN?). Please help

Select the option in the Activation wizard to call MS via telephone, the PC will generate a code to pass to MS and then MS will give you a long number to type in and the laptop will be activated - no internet required.

Hey everyone.
My Machine is an AMD Athlon with WIndows XP.
The other day I booted up my PC and it told me that I needed to reactivate Windows. I also wasn't able to connect to the internet. I re-activated Windows via phone and noticed my Device Manager window was empty.

My first attempt to fix it involved me going into regedt32 and selecting Hkey_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControls/Enum and changed the Permissions to Allow Full Control and under advanced I clicked "inherit from parent permissions."
After that I found out my Plug my Play was de-activated. That solved my problems for the Device Manager. It shows my Network card as being functional and the light is blinking.

I still have no internet connection and as far as I can tell no sound. I ran ipconfig /all under cmd and it shows that most of my Media States are disconnected (under all Ethernet Adapters). Also IP Routing and Wins Proxy are NOT enabled.

I had to upgrade my laptop because Win 7 got so many errors on it and I couldn't fix it. So to make a long story short I upgraded to Win 8 Pro x64.

Since I don't have a legit key activation fails, but I want to buy it and when I click on the buy it link it says I have to go to a retailer.

My question is how can I buy a license? If I wait until late Oct. will it work then? How long can I wait with not activating it? I don't want to ge locked out.

It is Win 8 Pro Build 9200, don't think it is MSDN.

You can't use a single XP license concurrently on 2 PC's. With that disclaimer, go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>activate windows.

You may have to activate over the phone. It's a bit tedious but it works.

I'm asking on behalf of my Mom - about a year ago my uncle did an overhaul of my Mother's old computer. When he gave it back to her, it had XP installed on it. Recently when she starts up the computer, the Windows Product Activiation screen comes up saying she must activate with Microsoft before she can log on. We were unable to locate any XP disc, and my uncle insists he gave it to her, but we fear he may have uploaded an illegal copy. My Mom ordered a legal copy of XP, but now we can't figure out what to do with it. The computer can't get out of the Activation window, and nothing happenes when we put the disc in the drive. We tried putting in the code we got with the new XP, but it doesn't work. The new XP disc is the version that comes with Service Pack 3, but I am not sure of what she had previously. She would just contact Microsoft, but after buying XP, her budget won't allow for a $59.00 phone call or email.

Any help or advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

A:I need some help for Activation

Hey man just when you start the computer press F2 or F1 (or the key the screen tell
you to press for BIOS). Do this quickly before anything Windows related appear if you fail turn off pc and try againg.

If you successfully got into the BIOS first be careful dont change anything, use the arrows keys and look for some settings to change the Boot order "boot sequence", "boot priority", etc

Change the booting order to Boot from CD/DVD rom first. After you do that exit saving your changes (usually F10).

Then you restart the computer with the Windows XP cd you bought in and the setup should start, follow instructions to install XP. After it finish restart computer again, go into BIOS again and change the booting order again and put Hard Drive first.

And well that should do it.

Hiya,

We have a machine at work which originally had windows 7 64bit home installed on it. We upgraded via the upgrade assistant thing to professional for office use. The upgrade assistant gave us a new activation code.

I was wondering if I can use the original disk and original activation code to install on a separate machine at home which I have recently upgraded to a 64 bit system - will the os activate?

I thought it would be a good idea to check if this is possible rather than go right ahead and purchase a new 64 bit os for my new home system. Maybe it is a call to Microsoft?

Thanks for any help its appreciated)

A:Help with activation.

Hello Quantumk, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but no. Since this is an upgrade copy and not a full retail copy purchased, it would violate the EULA to continue using the product key of the Windows you upgraded from.

In addition, if the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium came preinstalled on an OEM computer, then you will also not be able to activate it's key on another computer since it is permanently tied to the motherboard of the OEM computer and will not activate on any other computer or motherboard.

Sorry,
Shawn

When I booted my PC this morning, I got a message saying that the hardware had changed and I had to reactivate Win XP. Well, the hardware hadn't changed, but I attempted to do the activation. The activation window opened, but the normal activation info did not appear. Instead, the hard drive is constantly busy and msoobe.exe is using about 30% of the CPU and this goes on forever. (Forever being at least 10 minutes in this case). I've tried it multiple times with the same result.

Everything appears to be fine on the hard drive and all applications work properly. I've always accepted the installation of the latest XP maintenance and am at SP3 level. Any idea as to how to proceed? I have the 888-571-2048 activation number, but when you call that they assume you can get the activation window open and see the options available. Maybe if I had left the activation loop run for a few hours it might have eventually presented me with the proper screen?

It may be a virus. Your windows activation data is stored in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpa.dbl along with other stuff. That may have become corrupted, so I would suggest using a virus scanner first to assure that's not the case.

Hi
I have been running Windows 8, with media pack, in 32 bit mode for the last two months without problems.

I have now done a clean install with formatted drive of windows 8 in 64 bit mode. All went well and activation was a success. However the USB network adapter is giving serious problems and a suitable driver appears not to be available. Briefly the whole system locked up and I did a reinstall, which was successful. Trying to find a suitable driver again caused problems so the USB adapter was taken out and a refresh done. The network was then cable connected, which is okay. However on trying to activate it now returns that the activation key is in use on another computer and I have to buy another key. It wont give me the option to activate by phone.

I understood you could reinstall as many times as needed on the same computer, or does changing from 32 bit to 64 bit override that. If so how come I have done the exact same thing on my laptop with no problems. Unless anyone can suggest an answer I guess it is a call to customer support. I would appreciate your views.

My auto online activation for my XP Pro has passed its limit. Its a store bought copy OEM as I loathed Vista.
I did a clean install and got message to Activate before I could LOG-ON. As I have to install drivers needed to connect, I gave up trying, luckily I had Image Back Up made using Norton Ghost or I would be up the creek without a paddle.
Help re activating after clean install required PDQ

A:Xp Activation

Tell it to activate, when it fails it'll give you the option to use the telephone to activate.
Call Microsoft and have them activate it over the phone.
Make sure that you confirm that this is the only copy of XP and it's only installed on one system.

You can't unless it's...well we're not supposed to even mention the "H" word here. Posting here is for legitimate reasons. If you don't have the CD-key for your OS you need to buy another license for it.

Okay, big problem I think. I recieved my new hard drive in the mail today and so excited I switched out my 250gb for my new 750gb without reformating or anything. So, now I am not sure what to do because it says my activation key is still active from my other hdd. Oh and if it helps I went from 32bit on 250 to 64bit on the 750.

I bought Vista Ultimate in 2007, so I have the RTM version of it. Hopefully someone can help me out.

A:Activation key help!

You need to activate your install.

If Vista came preinstalled on your system its what is called OEM. It will need to be activated by phone, online activation will "not" work.

If you bought it retail, online activation should not be a problem.

I am looking to get an activation key for windows 8.1 pro.  My pc recently died and I decided to install a copy of windows 8.1 on my PC.  It works but the CD key isn't valid.  I had gotten it from school (ITI) and it was a 2 year license.  I guess i downloaded it more then 2 years ago because it won't activate.  Is there somewhere that i can purchase just the key itself for a good price.   The OS is working but will not activate. Just want to buy a working key.  I don't trust the ones sold on ebay

A:Activation Key

You are wise not to trust the one's on eBay.

I am pretty sure I hate Win XP. I know I hate it`s activation feature.

OK my problem> I have XP SP1 on a 80 Gig drive, it`s a very clean load. The software is a registered/bonified/honest to God copy of XP, verified by Redmond to be an authentic copy. On it I also have software for my Plextor DVD/CD R/RW burner. A copy of Nero 6 burning software, and DVD X Copy, which also is activated online. All softwares also legit, and verified as so.

With it loaded fresh, all is well. After a period of appx 45 days, give or take, but hasn`t been more than 50, nor less than 40 I start getting a "you must activate your Windows software" button popping up on start up. If I click YES to activate it, it tells me it is already activated, which it is. I have used both the online as well as phone activation to do this. When I click the close window button it cycles around, and back to the same d*** window, again stating is NOT activated. This cycle goes ad infinum, until I finally nuke everything on the drive and start over. Doing this for a 45 day period of time is a pain in the a--.

After reload/rectivation yada yada I`m OK for about 45 days, then same ol shi-. Really getting tired of this short life cycle. Anybody have any thoughts on how to shut this activation monster up, without me constantly reloading my drive.

I am a died in the wool Win 2000 pro user who after a lot of soul searching made the ENORMOUS purchase of this c*** software simply for the advanced Medi... Read more

When it tells you that it has already been activated, did you call Microsoft and get a new key to enter? And if you did, did you tell them about the problem.

I have bought Windows XP and installed on a computer with "Mobile Racks". It was ok for 2 racks, but now on the third one it tells me I have to phone Microsoft for reactivation. What is that B...S...? Does it mean that I have to buy another Windows-CD to be able to install it on ONE computer? And will I be able after reactivation to keep the other HDDs to the third one?

A:XP activation cr*p

Well, if it says call MS, I guess that's what you should do. I have no idea what their policy is toward mobile racks. I understand that their activation is good for up to about 30% hardware change and then you have to call. What really gripes me is that MS sees a motherboard as a computer. (And I always thought the processor did the computing . . .) If your motherboard burns up, they think that you have a new computer and need to re-purchase the operating system.

If you get info on this, come back and let us know.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question maybe someone could point me to the right direction? have been on with microsoft answer tech and he tells me "I see, I have checked the product key that
you have and it is under Windows 7 Ultimate and its under MSDN, meaning to say that you need to contact MSDN technical team in order for them to activate this license."
How do I reach the technical team?

I bought my Windows XP Home Edition, installed it on an old machine, then I got a new machine and when I tried to use my CD key to activate it,it told me 'Its limit of usage had been exceeded.' Which is bullcrap, I payed 150 for that thing, i should be able to use as many times as I'd like......

My question is, am I doing something wrong, or is this just another one of MS's ways of getting you to give money to them?!?!

How Do I Successfully Activate Windows On My Toshiba Tecra A8-s8513 Laptop Computer

A:Activation

HI,
If you click on the activate notification prompt, you will be sent to the Microsoft Activation screen. It will check over the internet and activate.
If this fails click on the Phone call option. This will give you a phone number to call Microsoft to activate your XP.

This may also help:

I found this to be rather annoying today, but I was informed in the systray with a little star thingy that my "system had undergone significant hardware changes" and that I had 3 days to reactivate my copy of windows XP.

I was pretty sure I read at Microshaft, before putting in my new 300GB harddrive - that if all I was replacing was the drive, and I made no changes to the other hardware then I wouldn't have to re-activate. In fact I went to windows update lastnight and was able to download Media Player 10! Heck, I've been using this setup for 3 years now without a hitch, and the only significant change I made was the harddrive, which I understood wouldn't require re-activation.

So why was it only after redoing drivers for my Intel Pro 100/ VE Onboard Network adapter, that I got hit with the re-activation message? Had no problems with the old drivers for networking, using the onboard Eithernet plug, but the drivers were for a Ethernet PCI card with the same chipset that I had installed and removed awhile back.

A harddrive is THE most significant change. Once you had installed the drivers for your internet connection then rightly so M/S found out you had changed your hard drive. If it's a pirate copy help is out there.Pip
