W7 activation -- new MOBO fine but LAN connection wants activation

Q: W7 activation -- new MOBO fine but LAN connection wants activation

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Cheers
jimbo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have found many threads about this (common) problem. My motherboard died, and I replaced it with a new one, a new processor, and added an ssd while I was at it. The old C: drive is intact, but not installed - so I could potentially reinstall it and and use it temporarily. But I would like to have a new install present. So I did a new install with my old Windows 8 pro disk and key. It did not activate. I followed the instructions here Activate Windows 8 by Phone and after reading the string of numbers the recording told me my product was not valid. I did not hang up, as it says at the end of the instructions, but microsoft did. I can't seem to find a simple support number to call and talk to an actual rep to tell them what happened.

I would like to do that. But I guess that I could reinstall the old HDD with the previous (activated) installation of Win8 on it and deactivate it? Would that allow me to then remove the old HDD and boot from the SSD and have my key work, or activate by phone?

It seems like it would be easiest to just talk to a rep, as that solution worked for many people on this forum with the same problem it appears. How could I get a Win8 activation rep or tech support on the telephone?

TIA!

CRaig

Model #       17-f053usProduct #    G6R30UA#ABA Windows 8.1 I bought this laptop new 16 months ago and  both USB 3.0 port failed and it's now out of warranty.  I purchased a used mobo 763422-501 the same as the one in the computer now.  I've been reading on the board that after a mobo change you must reactivate windows 8.1 and the key is imbedded in the BIOS.  Is there a way to get the activation key from the BIOS before I start the replacement?  Do I need the activation key from the mobo that is in the computer now or from the replacement board? Are there any other pitfalls I might encounter with this replacement?

A:Mobo swap causing re-activation issues

The major limitation of an OEM license is that it cannot be transferred between motherboards - it's locked to the first one on which it is activated.

If you're lucky, and get a friendly Activation operator on the day you try, you may be able to persuade them to allow activation on the new motherboard - otherwise, you're SOL.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Hi Gents,

Hope someone can help me here. I've been using a retail version of Win7 Home premium 64 for about 2 years now with no issues.

During that time I've reinstalled the product possibly 6 or 8 times. Excessive I know but when things start to go wrong I like to start fresh again. Anyway from memory the last 2 times I have had to use phone activation.

A couple of weeks ago I dropped my laptop and killed the HDD. Put in a new one and reinstalled Win. I've just tried to activate with no luck. I went to phone activation and being lazy I typed in my old code I had saved from last time.

Now I can't activate and when I try and open the phone activation box I get a pop up from the toolbar saying the copy isn't genuine and nothing more.

Is there a way to resolve this or have I pissed off the activation so much that I actually have to shell out for a new copy?

Thanks in advance and I'm located in Thailand if that makes a difference.

Hi guys , I installed ATI 2010 Home, Boxed version made a backup image to external HDD. got a message saying I had 30 days to activate trial version? I restored the backup image and I activated ATI , offline, I then received a message saying thanks successfully installed. When I access ATI now I get the same box asking for activation again. the options are Try out, Buy, Activate, Cancel . I was thinking of reactivating online , but am wary of further messing up the install . I have not registered the product yet , Had a look at the Acronis register page ( they tell you Not recommended to access the page) ? Any ideas with this one ? options uninstall , reinstall? Try activate online? Anyone experienced this problem?

Heres the situation. My brother bought a new laptop with vista, but he didnt realise he had to activate it. When he brought it to my house it had stoped working (because it had ran out of trial period time) i ran the laptop and it asked for the activation code which i typed in from the bottom of the laptop it then asked to connect to the internet and this is where the problem occurs i took the network cable out of the back of my desktop PC (on which the internet works perfectly fine) and slotted it into his laptop so i tried then letting it connect to the internet and activating but it could not access the internet ive tried several things but i cant actully access windows to mess with any settings. He said when he had the laptop at uni a few days before he left for the summer the internet was working fine on th elaptop (but the univercity's internet would be running through LAN?). Please help

A:Vista activation connection issue

Select the option in the Activation wizard to call MS via telephone, the PC will generate a code to pass to MS and then MS will give you a long number to type in and the laptop will be activated - no internet required.

Hey everyone.
My Machine is an AMD Athlon with WIndows XP.
The other day I booted up my PC and it told me that I needed to reactivate Windows. I also wasn't able to connect to the internet. I re-activated Windows via phone and noticed my Device Manager window was empty.

My first attempt to fix it involved me going into regedt32 and selecting Hkey_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControls/Enum and changed the Permissions to Allow Full Control and under advanced I clicked "inherit from parent permissions."
After that I found out my Plug my Play was de-activated. That solved my problems for the Device Manager. It shows my Network card as being functional and the light is blinking.

I still have no internet connection and as far as I can tell no sound. I ran ipconfig /all under cmd and it shows that most of my Media States are disconnected (under all Ethernet Adapters). Also IP Routing and Wins Proxy are NOT enabled.

I found this to be rather annoying today, but I was informed in the systray with a little star thingy that my "system had undergone significant hardware changes" and that I had 3 days to reactivate my copy of windows XP.

I was pretty sure I read at Microshaft, before putting in my new 300GB harddrive - that if all I was replacing was the drive, and I made no changes to the other hardware then I wouldn't have to re-activate. In fact I went to windows update lastnight and was able to download Media Player 10! Heck, I've been using this setup for 3 years now without a hitch, and the only significant change I made was the harddrive, which I understood wouldn't require re-activation.

So why was it only after redoing drivers for my Intel Pro 100/ VE Onboard Network adapter, that I got hit with the re-activation message? Had no problems with the old drivers for networking, using the onboard Eithernet plug, but the drivers were for a Ethernet PCI card with the same chipset that I had installed and removed awhile back.

A harddrive is THE most significant change. Once you had installed the drivers for your internet connection then rightly so M/S found out you had changed your hard drive. If it's a pirate copy help is out there.Pip

Activation is much more closely tied to hardware now than it was in the past, but that shouldn't cause a big problem, unless you have an OEM version of W7.

In the past, whenever I needed to reinstall XP on a machine, I would use a full retail version CD, then go through the activate-over-the-internet screens. I would then use the telephone activation. After reading the installation id to the computer, it would fail, then transfer me to the polite Indian person who would give me the correct activation code after I explained this was a reinstall. Sometimes I would need to give the correct license code (these were always legitimate licenses with the sticker intact), but usually not. I've done this hundreds of times.

Recently, on two occasions, (both with HP machines, btw), I have been transferred to the piracy-police section of MS, and told that my install won't activate unless I reinstall with the original OEM CD.

I like using the retail CD because it already has SP2, and I only need 100 or so updates to bring it current after the install. :-)

So...has there been a change in the activation procedure? Is there a better procedure for me to use, or do I need to start stockpiling OEM cds?

Thanks!!

Tuner

it sounds like you did not purchase the retail version and they would know as soon as you gave them the serial
they are cracking down on pirated copies and on oem,now oem can only be sold with a full computer,a cable and a h/d and the like no longer qualifies

A:Activation key help!

You need to activate your install.

If Vista came preinstalled on your system its what is called OEM. It will need to be activated by phone, online activation will "not" work.

If you bought it retail, online activation should not be a problem.

This is unlikely... There is no functionality in Windows 7 that permits it to roll-back to a previous version because you didn't purchase a new key...

I'm guess you're going to have to reinstall Premium...

Hey guys, I went ahead and reinstalled my Windows XP, all was going fine until asked for activation key, I inputted the one which was with the pack and now I get the error message, invalid key. This is the only activation key I have and the picture matches exactly the one on the screen, what can I do to get a new key? Im not going to call Microsoft for this as they charge for their customer phone support which I find utterly disgusting, have we not paid enough for the sofware in the first place! To give you further details the version I have of XP is from late 2003 and has SP1 written on it, which I believe refers to service pack 1 from what I can tell. Thanks for the assistance. I am wholly open to the idea of being given a hack code if anyone knows where I can get one, I paid for the product in the first place so whichever solves the problem mostly quickly the better basically. Thanks everyone!

A:Wpa Activation Key

It's likely that the activation failed because you've already activated that particular copy of XP.

When you attempt to activate (and it fails) you should be given the option to activate by phone. This is free and only takes a few minutes to do (I do it at work several times a week). The computer (on the phone) will ask you some questions and then will provide a series of numbers to re-activate your copy of XP. If you don't answer the questions correctly, they'll connect you with a human who'll ask you some more questions and then will give you the numbers to re-activate.

FWIW - We don't support "hacks" here, nor any other illegal activity.

I had a discussion with a friend and I wonder if anybody has some experience with this:

If you have two different PCs with different hardware and install XP on both machines with the same ProductKey, could you activate them both?

If so, what is the activation good for? And if not, how can Microsoft differ installing on two different machines at the same time on side, and from installing on one machine, upgrading the hardware und reactivating a second time on the other side?

I am curious what you think about this.

Because you already activated it, microsoft basically wont allow you to activate it again. You have to call microsoft and tell them your situation. They will give you a code to fix it. I had to do the same thing for office xp....my comp got screwed up, so i reformatted....wouldnt let me activate...so i called ms, told them i reformatted and needed a new code, and they gave me one.

EDIT: the reason they do this is for software piracy issues...cant use the product if its already been used once.... one thing you should note though, because that screen auto pops up now all the time, you might have to reinstall xp again...ask ms about that

I'm asking on behalf of my Mom - about a year ago my uncle did an overhaul of my Mother's old computer. When he gave it back to her, it had XP installed on it. Recently when she starts up the computer, the Windows Product Activiation screen comes up saying she must activate with Microsoft before she can log on. We were unable to locate any XP disc, and my uncle insists he gave it to her, but we fear he may have uploaded an illegal copy. My Mom ordered a legal copy of XP, but now we can't figure out what to do with it. The computer can't get out of the Activation window, and nothing happenes when we put the disc in the drive. We tried putting in the code we got with the new XP, but it doesn't work. The new XP disc is the version that comes with Service Pack 3, but I am not sure of what she had previously. She would just contact Microsoft, but after buying XP, her budget won't allow for a $59.00 phone call or email.

Any help or advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hey man just when you start the computer press F2 or F1 (or the key the screen tell
you to press for BIOS). Do this quickly before anything Windows related appear if you fail turn off pc and try againg.

If you successfully got into the BIOS first be careful dont change anything, use the arrows keys and look for some settings to change the Boot order "boot sequence", "boot priority", etc

Change the booting order to Boot from CD/DVD rom first. After you do that exit saving your changes (usually F10).

Then you restart the computer with the Windows XP cd you bought in and the setup should start, follow instructions to install XP. After it finish restart computer again, go into BIOS again and change the booting order again and put Hard Drive first.

And well that should do it.

I want to validate batmansfield's uncle and his contention of a good copy of OS. Microsoft's windos is very peculiar when it comes to volume copies as intalled by any one of the major computer manufacturers. I changed a fried motherboard with full intentions of preserving the Windows XP OS, video, music and digital fotos, not to say the least, numerous games and their saved progress I have on my hard drive. The hardware is doing its job, but now I have to find a way to download all of the data into another system, and then perform a clean install on this hard drive. Microsoft can not validate in activation a Product Key when a component has been changed by someone other than the original computer manufacturer...as I understand it. It almost feels as if all of my data is being held hostage until I pay the ransom money for an Product key .

A:I need some help for Activation

Use the key, that came with the machine. Do a clean install, wipe the
drive with killdisk first.
If a error pops up about validation, call the phone number on the
blue screen, explain to the asian chick on the other end that the
mobo fried on your boxstore pc and you had to replace. Ive done
it numerous times, if you start with a clean drive though, you rarely
have a issue.

Hi guys i bought a laptop from Acer and i was offered win 8 when it was due to come out for a special price so i did this and waited till win 8 came out and true to there word Acer sent the win8 disk.

So i installed it but sadly i did not really like it so i wiped the lappy and went back to win 7 so i was rummaging about in the house and i found an old Toshiba lappy satellite L40 14n which runs vista so i sparked the lappy up and re-did the Tosh but for some strange reason i am suddenly getting loads of stuff that never used to happen ie not allowing me to update stuff or install for example Adobe flash.

So i thot i would fire the win 8 on the Toshiba which works fine and dandy (so far) but it came up that this license key is already being used on another PC which i take it will be the Acer i had it on originally, so what i am thinking how can i get the win 8 to activate on the Toshiba or can this not be done as it's been used on my Acer laptop.

If i can get it activated on the Toshiba i will probably just format it so it has only win 8 on it instead of the dual boot option but i do not want to totally wipe it before i know i can activate win 8 because that will get rid of the recovery option for Vista but tbh if it's doing those things i mentioned i do not really see the point in worrying about that.

All i really want to do is to use the Toshiba so i can log in and watch Now Tv from sky to which i subscribe for the movies so if i could just use it for this option using w... Read more

A:Help With Activation Of XP!

All you need to do is cal the telephone number on the activation screen and explain to the tech that answers the phone. depending on how good your explanation is will either get you a new authorization or a refusal. If refused they will sell you a new product ID for somewhere between $100.00 and $200.00 depends one what version of Windows you need.

This is the only thing that you can do.

I am unable to obtain the display of the activation window when I type oobe/msoobe /a or go through Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activation. There is no rebuttal. The request is processed but nothing happens.

I reinstalled XP from scratch and used the previous WPA which I had saved previously. The WPA files were copy-pasted under Safe Mode.

Bottom line : I don't know whether I am considered as activated or not.

I have a Desktop PC which I upgraded to Win10 with no problems. I also have a Laptop, HP ProBook which was also offered to upgrade to 10 which I did and gave to my daughter.

She attends University away from home, and I never had a chance to look at the laptop much. She graduated this week and came back home and I took a look at My/her laptop and found out, much to my surprise that Win10 never activated on it.

The original account, in which the previous Windows version was upgraded is still present on laptop, (my account), so I tried to activate from there and it was not possible.

The original license is no where to be found on the computer, i.e. sticker, but I do have the DVD to upgrade to Win 8.1 from Win 7 that came with it, which I never did.

I thought of using the credentials of the account in my desktop to create a new one in laptop, Microsoft account, but I am reluctant to do so, as I don't know how that would impact my desktop.

So my question is:

How to activate Win10 on laptop at this point?. If a reinstall Win 8.1 will it recuperate my previous license, (doubt it). Can I use the Microsoft account in my desktop on laptop at the same time and try to activate?.

Is there any other way to activate? Calling Microsoft maybe...

Thank you very much in advance for your sugestions

A:Win 10 No Activation

Check the OEM edition of the laptop.. run ShowKey first to check the edition - click the keys shown, to mask them ( then screenshot or save the txt file and paste the result here)
