WD My Passport 2TB not Recognized by "Storage Spaces"

Q: WD My Passport 2TB not Recognized by "Storage Spaces"

I have 3 x Western Digital 2 TB My Passports that I purchased to use with "Storage Spaces".
"Storage Spaces" does not recognize these drives but Windows 8 recognizes them under Computer.
The drives have an SES driver.
Has anyone figured out how to get them to be recognized by "Storage Spaces?

Preferred Solution: WD My Passport 2TB not Recognized by "Storage Spaces"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I was building a new array, using drives formatted with larger cluster sizes to get over the 15.8TB drive limit.
Since you can't 'remove' a drive in the GUI and have everything rebalance, I physically removed the drive while powered down.  Upon rebooting, Storage Spaces said there was a missing drive and I clicked "Remove" so that the repair work would
start (plenty of room since I'd just moved 7TB of data to the new array).

Then disaster hit.  One of my 1TB drives failed hours into the Repair process.
It appears the drive has failed - powers up, spins up but no computer can see it and it doesn't show up in the Disk Management tool.  I may have lost irreplaceable pictures and home movies.  I'd be using mirroring for just this reason.
HOWEVER - the 4TB drive I removed?  Haven't written a thing to it or used it in any way.  When I spin it back up, I get that Disk 14 is Healthy with "Storage Spaces Protected Partition".  Is there ANY way I can "re-attach"
this disk to the array to make up for whatever was on the 50% of the 1TB drive that was mirrored on the 4TB drive?  Only files who were on those two disks and no others would be affected and those are the ones I'm worried about.
Thanks in advance.

I have a storage space which has vanished. In that the drive has vanished from disk manager. The physical drives all read ok in the storage space manager, but the space itself is displaying the reconnect drive error. I've tried reconnecting the virtual drive,
and receive the "StorageWMI 8" error code, which doesn't appear to be a published error code.  I've exhausted my search and so I'm asking for help. Any ideas?

Hello everyone!

I'm having the following issue with my Storage Spaces setup.

As you can see, Storage Spaces says "Reduced resiliency; check the Physical drives section" but all disks are "OK".
I do have some performance issues and a noisy disk, however, I'm not sure which disk and why doesn't Windows tell me whick one.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Thank you in advance!

Alexander S.

A:Storage Spaces "Reduced resiliency; check the Physical drives section"

Generally, when a member drive is disconnected or has failed, it might occur this error.

I would like to suggest you troubleshoot as below:
1. Backup the whole Storage Space to a new hard drive in order to avoid data lost.
2. Attach the disks to another computer to identify which disk that had a problem.
3. Format the disk that did not show up in Windows Explorer and was not readable.
4. The reformatted disk was then added to the original Storage Space and the rebuild process started automatically. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

I can see them in disc management as dynamic, and am able to write to them.

I use "storage spaces" from control panel, and that's how I end up with the notice quoted in title line above.
Any ideas?

A:"no drives that work with storage spaces are available"

Dynamic disks are NOT eligible for being added to a storage pool. (See:
: though it refers to Server UI, the underlying restriction is applicable to both client and server).
You must convert the disks to basic disks using Disk Management UI before they will be usable with storage spaces. Note this process deletes all data on the disks that you are converting.

Hi everyone, I'm using Win 7 and use Disk manager to span my 5 HDD's together into one drive. Been doing this for years. I am interested in using Storage Spaces (SS) to gain the benefit of parity. I just can't find the answers to these questions. Thank for helping.

1. Are there any improvements in SS from Win10 from Win8?
2. I'm confused about setting the max size. If you set the max size beyond the amount of actual size you have, this allows you to add more drives at a later point in time? But what if you set the max size exactly the same as the actual size? Are you not allowed to increase storage then? If so, why not just make the max size like 500TB? I don't understand this option.
3. Is there still no way to re-balance data on the pool? If you add a new drive to the pool, it won't auto-balance the data?
4. Does it auto-balance data as you fill up the pool starting from scratch?
5. If a drive dies, how do you know exactly which drive to take out of your computer?
6. Last (probably not), I have heard some talk about wasted space using the parity option. I currently have an array of these disks: 5TB, 4TB, 2TB, 2TB, 2TB. Is there some way to know how much usable space I would have with a parity setup?

btw, I have an exact same disk array that I use as a backup in an eSATA box. 30TB total. I would be willing to mix and match drives from these two arrays if a certain combination yielded better space savings.

Thanks again.

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

A:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

I just got a new Hewlett Packard computer with Windows XP. The CD drive is a combo CD reader, writer and DVD. The main reason I need it is to backup my many documents, database programs (RootsMagic family history, Quicken, etc.), photographs and drawings. The pre-installed burning program on the computer is Adaptec's (I think) Sonic RecordNow!, which is useless for my needs because of the way it works. The HP tech suggested I download DLA to enable me to use "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, but I haven't had much luck with that, either. What I need is to be able to use a CD-RW as a giant floppy - to add, delete, copy, edit and move files, just as I do on my regular floppies, using "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, or "save as...". What software do I need for this? Please use "baby-talk" with me, because I don't understand any of the initials, terms and technical language I see all over these forums. Thanks, Dellasha

Whenever I manually go to "My Computer" and then step through the following folders, "Local Disk C", "Documents and Settings", "Mike", a blue framed box appears, urging me to "Sign In With Microsoft Passport Network", with fields for "Sign In Name" and "Password". I click the red X to bypass this and when I open the next folder, this annoyance reappears. When I step backwards to the "Mike" folder, it reappears once again. I have run several spyware programs and all say that my system is clean. Norton AV says the same. I have removed everything from my start-up list using "msconfig" that could possibly be causing this, but to no avail. I assume some trojan has been imbedded into my registry to be causing this. Can you please tell me how to remove this "plague".

Hi. When I go into Documents and Settings folder, I always get this "popup" window named "Sign in with Microsoft Passport Network" and I don't feel safe even though it probably really is from Microsoft. More so, it's just plain annoying as hell when I'm trying to navigate through Documents and Settings.
On another forums board, someone suggested I create a new key in my registry which appeared to be a new key to suppress the "popup". I didn't feel safe doing that even though I've worked in my registry before, because this person who suggested this, didn't have any credentials, just a mere 4 prior posts to that forum, hence I don't feel safe trying that.

Can you please tell me how to keep this window from popping up everytime I go into Documents and Settings? I've included a screenshot of the "popup" window and a HJT log to help (see below). Thanks in advance!!!

My desktop computers disk space has been pretty full for quite sometime, I have been deleting unused files and running diskcleanup, but I can't make any headway! I don't even have enough space for the disk defragmenter to work.

I thought if I bought an external hard drive and moved all my kids photos and music files to it, the problem would be solved.

So I got a "My Passport", I don't think it is what I expected! It is "synchronizing" my computer.

After it's done will I be able to delete the photo and music files from my PC, and then when I want them just access them through "My Passport"?

A:Disk is 98% Full, Bought "My Passport", Now what do I do?

Did you install any special software on the computer to do this "synchronization"? All you have to do when you buy a hard drive is attach it to the computer, wait for the computer to recognize it as an external mass storage device, then go to explorer and start dragging and dropping files and folders on it. Uninstall any software you installed on the computer that came with this hard drive and just try it the easy way.

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

Apologies if this has already been covered. I did try a search but got nothing specific to my problem.

I currently have 4 Windows 8.1 Pro units around my desk.
One is general day to day.
One is gaming, audio & video work.
One is a currently retired 'server' for backups.
One is the replacement 'server' for backups.
This contains an SSD system disk, a 2Tb HDD for Macrium Reflect images and 2 Storage Space pools.
One consists of 2x250Gb HDD's called DATA & assigned to drive letter 'D'.
The other consists of 4x1TB HDD's called STORAGE & assigned to drive letter 'E'

The replacement 'server' unfortunately decided to go do-lally :(
All I know is, it suddenly decided to reboot 4 days ago and everything went haywire.

As a result I purchased a new motherboard, CPU, ram with the intention of building a fresh install of windows 8.1 on the basis the storage pools would show up in the new system.

Here is the problem !
The pools show up in Control panel /Storage Spaces as DATA (F:) and STORAGE (G:)
Both pools show as OK and all 6 drives show as OK.
If I click on 'view files' nothing happens :(
If I go to windows explorer they show up as Local Disk (F:) and Local Disk (G:)and if I double click to open I get a 'Location is not available. F:\ is not accessible. The volume repair was not successful'. Same for G:

Why is Storage Space manager saying they are working properly when nothing else can access them?
Are they recoverable somehow or have I lost everything ?

I just got a brand new laptop, with 2 USB 3.0 ports (and one e-sata, which also does USB 3.0) So naturally I wanted to use my Western Digital passprt ext. hardrive. If I plug it into the 3.0 ports, it works 25% of the time... as a 2.0 port. (This device can opperate faster in a 3.0 port bla bla...) The rest of the time it doesn't even pop up with anything, as if it wasn't plugged in. The drive works fine every time in a 2.0 port, but with 2.0 speeds obviously. How can I fix it :/

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, my internal drive, is SSD, I HAVE installed USD 3.0 drivers that came with the computer (The drivers are from may this year) and the ext. drive is freshly formatted (As is the int. drive)
The port is indeed blue, as is the cable. The ext. drive does not use extra power. It gets it's power from the usb.

Motherboard: CLEVO CO. W3x0ET - Installed the chipset drivers form the CD that came with the computer (They are form this year), the manufacturers (Of the motherboard) website, does not have any drivers for this motherboard.
Installed drivers for the ext. drive. I also checked the USB main hub in device manager and it says 500ma per port.

Any ideas?

Edit: Bios has no USB settings, other than choosing the USB boot order. Getting under 50mb/s transfer rates.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hey, whats up? New here.

Right now my hard drive is split up into two partitions: System and Storage. However, when installing 7, for some odd reason, the installer put the boot manager (I think it is the boot manager) on my Storage partition, when I want it on the System partition. Is there a way I can non-destructively move the boot manager to the System partition and redirect to boot from there, instead of being located on the Storage partition and booting from the System partition. In essence, I want to move it and tell it to boot from itself. Is there a way to non-destructively do that?

Also, according to this tutorial (Product Key Number - Uninstall and Deactivate in Windows) I can deactivate 7. I was wondering, does that free up the install key for another use or is that use of the key permanently lost even though I deactivated 7?

A:Moving bootmanager from "Storage" partition to "System" partition

As long as it is not OEM version, you can move Win7 to any computer of your choice as often as you want - as long as it is on only one computer at a time. Just uninstall it first by running from Elevated Command Prompt the command slmgr -upk., or If you don't want the old installation just delete it using the Installation DVD or a partition manager.

Please post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map with listings showing all columns, using the Snipping Tool in Start Menu, and we will give you the steps to move the System boot files to Win7 partition.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

This will be my first post on this forum.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Toshiba SATELLITE CL10-B-103 for my son. This CL10-B-103 had Windows 8.1 installed. This evening I planned to do the installation of the Windows 10 Upgrade because Windows 8.1 announced it was ready for the upgrade.

The proces went slowly but smooth and with no issue until now...... Since the laptop is equipped with only a 32 GB HD the upgrade proces informed I had to stick in a USB Stick. After this the proces continued smoothly but slowly, but that was no issue because I had the whole evening. However after the first restart of the system when it was at about 60 or 66% of the installation proces this error message showed: place the external storage and press OK. This is very strange since the USB stick was not removed at all and was still in the system. The more strange it is, is that both the OK-button as the Cancel-button are not selectable. Not via the touchpad and not via a Tab or an Enter.

Some online Windows 10 community post mentions that via the BIOS the system should be booted from this USB Stick. I have tried to restart the system with DEL, F2 or F8 but I could not get into the BIOS and was not able to change the boot sequence.

After each 'restart' the same error message appears. It does not matter whether the USB stick is in it or not.

So, my conclusion is my CL10-B-103 is hanging/is in a loop. I do not know how to proceed.

Please, I really can use some help.

Many thanks in... Read more

Since it seems I cannot modify/change a post I reply to my own post now.....

The issue seemed to be solved. When I was able to use the touchpad I could push the butten OK and the upgrade proceeds now.

OK, I've had this happen before, such as when I installed AVG AV. I know the trick for the IRPStackSize reg edit.

However, I am encountering more and more of this on my network on CPU's and drives that never did this before. Strangely enough, it may affect only some of the drives on a CPU and not others. I've tried all different settings for the StackSize value and it does no good. None of these CPU's has had AV on them as they don't sit on the web and are on a closed network. I had one CPU that was fine this morning and on the next reboot I could not share a video folder any more, but every other share off it worked fine. Anyone else encountering this?

A:"Not enough server storage space...this command" randomly; IRPStackSize not fixing it

i'd have to go dig up the details again but could you indicate:

- What operating system/service packs are installed on the machines
- What is is the CURRENT irpstacksize value you have (knowing, of course, you have to reboot for it take affect)

Initially, for a fix, i'd try resetting all sharing and reboot. The turn sharing back on.

and how many shares do you on defined on each machine?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S7442 laptop which came with Vista and I upgraded to win 7 dual boot. For some reason there are no drivers for the card reader ( sandisk microSD card ) in win 7 but Vista works fine. Have tried Toshiba driver download but cannot find drivers for mass storage controller.

Any suggestions on how to find drivers, tried update drivers no luck.

Thanks Bob

Scrooge McDuck is now in charge of Microsoft's consumer cloud division. That's not literally true, of course, but a surprise announcement tonight from the division responsible for the consumer OneDrive service could easily have been written by Mr. McDuck. The new rules roll back a signature feature of the OneDrive service and renege on an extravagant promise that the company made just over a year ago.Source: Microsoft reneges on 'unlimited' OneDrive storage promise for Office 365 subscribersI'm not really affected by the fact that there won't be unlimited storage, since 1TB is more than enough to work with Office documents, but this however...Free OneDrive storage will decrease from 15 GB to 5 GB for all users, current and new. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.It seems like I'll have to build my own private cloud to store my things and keep it accessible 24/7. Now I only have 7GB with Dropbox and 15GB with Google Drive.

I'm almost done making a music video and should've known better than to use anything from Microsoft......any way When I add the next clip of video in the timeline I get this error message. "Not enough Storage available to process this command". And I can assure you I have plenty of free hard drive space AND I even tried cranking up the virtual memory and I still get the same error. As I said I am 3/4 done with this project and would like to finish the thing so I never have to use Windows' horrible software again. I've googled this question and was unable to fina a real answer or fix to this.....HELP!

Hi there,
Storage pool with two storage spaces created using Windows 8 Release Preview and then ported into Windows 8 RTM. I'm now trying to delete one of the storages spaces and getting this access is denied error message.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Unable to delete Storage Space "Access is Denied" 0x00000005

I solved the problem for me.
Again... No file lock on the storage pool and no application is doing anything with this virtual disk. But it's not possible to remove it from storage spaces. This has nothing to do with ownership of the drive, access rights or an access of a process. I
had a clean windows setup with no programs installed. I'd say that this is a bug of windows!

Anyway here is my solution:
* Opened an explorer with "Computer" open.
* Opened "computer managment" and selected the storage list.
* I selected the storage pool which I wanted to delete but wasn't able to.
* Right click -> format... I think I have chosen NTFS but it's not so important...
* Warning that the drive is in use (what a nonsense) -> yes yes ok
* waited a few seconds until the bar with the free space disappeared at the "Computer" folder for this drive (on the explorer).
* stopped the format process. some error msgs that this couldn't be canceled and then he said he couldn't finish... (wtf ;))
* then back to the storage spaces overview... manage storage spaces... delete storage pool... pool disappeared... finish

hope this helps someone

I'm trying to map my box.com cloud storage using "Map Network Drive".

I found the "Map Network Drive" button at the top of my folder.
I click on "Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures"
I follow through "Choose a custom network location"
At "Internet or network address" I type the url where I would log into box through the internet:

At next I get the login prompt, so I login, clicking "Remember my credentials"
when it returns, indicating that my login is incorrect the number of letters in my password has doubled, so
of course my password is incorrect if the "network drive" is adding a bunch of extra characters.

So I go back and click on "connect using different credentials" and get the same result

what's happening here and how do I fix it?

A:Mapping a cloud storage site using "Map Network drive"

Your password looks longer because no one should be able to see how many char your password contains.

Today I fixed a Graphics Card Driver issue (with the help of a thread here on this site)

Now I just have one exclamation mark left in Device Manager on my laptop.

Full details of my set up is in my profile, but in short:

Acer Aspire 8935g
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit

The "Mass Storage Controller" has the exclamation mark and more detil is...:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Of course, there are no other issues, no other exclamation marks at all.

So what is this Mass Storage Controller and which driver do I need to install??

A bit for info:

PCI Bus 2, device 0, function 2

I have no idea what THAT means, except it is probably to do with where the device is physically connected (?) - does that help anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks very much in advance for any sugggestions.

Any ideas?

(Dell XPS 8500, 24GB, 1GB mSata system drive, two Toshiba USB3.0 attached hard drives)
I have a storage space set up on my Windows 1607 primary computer. (Storage Spaces is a feature of Windows 8.1 and later and Server 2012 and later.) It is set up with a normal pair of large capacity hard drives and is in two-way mirrored configuration, formatted ReFS. I see the "reduced resiliency warning" but both drives are marked as "OK." What is the meaning of the "reduced resiliency" warning and what is required to remove it"? I get the same warning with a similar storage space configuration on my test box, the only difference being that it is formatted NTFS.
