Q: New hard drive giving me problems! HELP!

I got myself a new Western Digital 120 gig hard drive. Plugged it in, computer recognized it as the new master. Went about installing WIN XP, when we got to the Windows is starting screen, now the new hard drive cannot be detected. What is going on? Anybody help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I have just installed a new hard drive and it is detected on the BIOS but...

When I go to select it in My Computer, it either stops the PC responding or asks me to format it. I go to format the drive and it tells me it could not complete. I've just run chkdisk and...

File record segmants: 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 128, 256, 6984-6988, 9092, 9208-9217, 9224, 9232, 9233, 9344, 9364, 9480-9486 (and a hell of a lot more) are unreadable

I am running XP home. It seems to take a very long time to startup as well, a VERY long time in comparison to before.

Does anyone know what the problem could be or a way to fix it?

I have two hard drives in my computer, 1. 500gb for my windows OS and 2. 1tb for my data. I today backup all my data to my terabyte hdd to reload windows. So I have a fresh copy of windows, great. But my second HDD, the terabyte, won't show up. I've tried swapping cables, turning it off for an hour to cool, blah blah. Nothing.

What's interesting is, 50% of the time I boot my computer and go into my bios it will see the terabyte drive. The other 50% it wont. I've gotten windows to see the drive once or twice, but when I try to access the drive, Windows Explorer freezes.

So heres my question. To me, this looks like a physical problem. Now I have a lot of important data on my terabyte drive. Are there any ways to retrieve my data? Even if it means replacing parts on the HDD itself?

Try going in with a live Linux disc. Most mainstream distributions handle NTFS, so if it can be mounted it can read/write the drive. Also, you could be able to do an integrity check to make sure there isn't a physical problem.

Okay, to begin. I have a Toshiba Satellite A665D-S6091. I had heard after I bought the computer that it had an overheating problem. It became apparently clear to me that this was true when the computer began blue screening and shutting down. So I decided to be more careful with the computer, I wouldn't leave it on for long, I only placed it on tables and other hard surfaces, and I lowered the energy settings. I thought that this had worked until a few days ago when a slew of error messages began popping up on my screen. To begin with a lovely error message that read: "Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk." Then I got locked out of my cd drive and it wouldn't open. THEN I opened my C: drive to find (for the first time) a new folder entitled: 069a303672da7fdf5d3dbab42a0532 . So like any normal person who knows next to nothing about computers, I turned off the laptop, unplugged it, and took out the battery for about 10 minutes. then i installed microsoft works suite 2006 .
then my epson printer .
then my wire less key board ..
now all i have left is [188] of free space .

Hey all, i screwed up big. I have a 120 GB Maxtor Drive (6Y120P0) as a second drive used just for storage. I let it get too full. I think it got to 90% full. A big No No i know. I deleted as much as i could that it would let me. It was giving me all sorts of I/O Device Errors and was running real slow. I scanned the drive and defragmented it.

i bought an External Drive to copy everything over but with a lot of files(including my entire family picture album of my twins) it gives me the following error when i try to copy or access a file...F:\(name of directory) is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Is there any software i can run to fix this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I have a lot of things backed up on DVDs but not all of it.

i have a partitioned hard drive of which contains C: and D:

D: is the one i am having problems with. all it contains is 'my documents and settings' but there is nothing in them (with the exception of the stuff windows wont let me delete)

when i right click on the drive in my computer it says 24GB has been used when i know for a fact that only 568MB has been used!

I have tries error check, virus scanning with ESET anti-virus, CCleaner and there are no hidden files or folders

my question is how can i either: move my documents and setting to the C: drive (like it should be) and then be able to delete the D: partition

or do something to the D: partition that will get my space back that i so desperately need!

on a pc with xp, i got the full message....i just burned and or deleted 27 full albums (all at 192 bit rate or above--most at 320)and have less hard drive space from when i started.....i'm like what is going on......you can see in the properties of the folder that i have deleted 3 gigs at least.....funny thing is also....there were over 10 gigs free 2 days ago and not much downloading going on......nortons did not find a virus......HELP!!!!!!!!

I am having trouble with my DVD RAM Drive . On inserting a recorded DVD into the drive the drive fails to read the contents on the disc and just displays a blank window. I thought something was wrong with the drive so i changed it but the problem still persisted. To top it all on inserting the same DVD in a different computer the contents are read and displayed perfectly. I am having trouble figuring out what could be wrong. Please Help.

I am using a Computer with a Pentium 4 1.5Ghz Processor and the system has Windows XP Professional Edition Service Pack 2 installed on it.

PS: Virus scans seem to yield no viruses

I have been getting the BSOD, constantly sometimes once a week, or times once or twice a day, I have updated my Nvida gefore grafics cards recently as well, because of another error code from the BSOD saying there was a problem there. But now i have the erro code at file

I have:

Note on 80gb HD
my 80gb is the one having the Windows OS and does not report any errors in the event log.

Note on 500gb HD
i think my 500gb has failed
sometimes it does not show up in the bios. a controller issue i presume.
but when it does get detected and i run SeaTools for Windows, the 500gb will pass these tests:
1. SMART - Pass 1/15/2012 03:52:46
2. Long DST - Pass 1/15/2012 03:55:29
The event log would show same errors as it does for the 1000gb (below) so i have just disconnected it for now.

Note on 1000gb HD
but my issue here is with the 1000gb which is even more weird.
this is what happened on Friday the 13th after midnight:

A:Hard disks passing SMART tests but still giving problems

In my experience i hear clicking sound with my external usb hdd, when it has problem getting enough power (too many devices installed and with lower power supply rating 300W). Have you tried dis/reconnecting the data and power cable of your hdd or reseting BIOS setting to default?

In device manager uninstall the IDE channel that the DVD is on then reboot. windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the drive on boot up.

I REALLY hope someone out there can help me with this!

I have a failed hard drive/ stuffed partion, and i DESPERATELY need the data from it!

A computer was brought into me with two hard drives. The owner asked me to set up a duel boot with vista and XP on the first hard drive, and to leave the second hard drive alone (its his backup drive with all his photos, movies etc) I was working away as per usual, when i noticed the second hard drive was no longer coming up in Windows Explorer. Well it was, but not correctly. whenever i clicked on it it said 'would you liket to format the drive?' obviously, i didnt want to do that.

I ran Partition Magic 8.0 which showed the drive was only 8Gigs (it should have been 1T or 1000Gigs) Partition Magic also said there was a problem with the drive and offered to fix it. I agreed, however there was no change.

I've run a number of programs to try and fix the drive:
Acronis Disk Director Server 10.0
Partition Table Doctor 3.5 Demo
Dtidata Partition Repair Tool
Recover My Files v3.98

However, all the partition repairers claim that the drive is only 8 Gigs, and they can go no further. All the File Recovery Programs will only scan for 8 Gigs, and thus, i can not recover my clients precious photos and videos.

The BIOS comes up as recognizing the drive as 33Gigs?

I really REALLY need the data from this drive! Does anyone know how to fix my problem?

I've used ZAR to recover files from a RAID box that seemed to have been corrupted due to a bad power supply.

You might check it out. It's free. Meaning it will only allow you to recover so many files at a time. I bought it, and like it.

They have a forum that is monitored quite often, from the developer too.

I am in the process of doing a clean re-install of Windows XP for Home on my PC. I have 3 hard drives:

c: 200gb Maxtor SATA drive - bootable with Windows XP (existing Windows install)
d: 20gb Maxtor IDE drive - non bootable data drive
g: 160gb Maxtor IDE drive - bootable with the clean install of Windows XP for home on it

Windows is not seeing all the sizes quite right yet but I will tackle that when I have solved this major problem that follows:

If I boot from the C drive - I have no problems at all. Windows will see all the different drives as it should do, I can access them all and they all work fine.

When I come to boot the clean install on drive G windows changes the drive letters - G becomes C, D remains as D but the 200gb Maxtor SATA drive isn't seen at all and might as well not exist.

Disk Management within Windows is no help as it can't see the drive, Maxtor software MaxBlast 4 is also no help as it can't see the drive on this install either.

I have checked and rechecked the BIOS but have pretty much discounted any issues here as it clearly shows all 3 drives and all 3 drives are listed on boot up. It's just when Windows kicks in that I have the problem.

I guess it's a simple setting somewhere, but I am pulling out what little hair I have left trying to think what it is - so any ideas would be very gratefully received.

A:Hard Drive Bootup Problems, Help required - Windows not seeing new hard drive Options

This is what I would do to enhance performance and storage strategy:

1. Use the 20g for the os and housekeeping utes such as av, spyware, etc only, nothing else goes on that drive.
2. Use the 160g for apps installs.
3. Use the 200g for data.

This might get you past the bios/firmware/os/drive letter issue and make better use of the drives. The 20 isn't really good for storage anymore, but would be great for an os/system ute drive. It's performance is less than the other drives, but that's ok, most of the os will stay in ram anyway after boot, you won't make any real diff having a faster os drive.
You might want to place a pagefile on each drive so pageing can occur concurrently too.

I am building a new computer from scratch. It is has an Intel Motherboard, 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 Processor, 2 IDE Ports + 1 for the floppy drive, I have 4 External 5-1/4" slots, 2 External 3-1/2" slots and 3 internal 3-1/2" slots for hard drives. Here are my problems.

I had a Compaq Presario with a 5-1/4", 12gig Hard Drive. That motherboard went bad so I decided to build my own computer from scratch and everything was going fine until now. I took the 5-1/4" hard drive out and put it into my new case. It had Windows 98 on it and so I upgraded to Windows XP Professional. That solved many of my problems but I am still stuck with the following problems.

1. My Hard Drive Light on my Case which is suppose to light up when my hard drive is active, doesn't work. I can see a little green light on my hard drive itself light up but not on the front of the case where it is suppose to.

2. I decided that the 12Gig hard drive from my old system is a little too slow, so I bought a 40Gig, 7200 rpm Western Digital Caviar Drive. It is a 3-1/2" drive which I put into one of those internal drive bays. When I boot up, I go to CMOS by pressing F2 and then I go and see that the computer is recognizing it and it is. My problem is when I go to Windows and to "My Computer", it isn't there. I am sure it is something small that I am overlooking but I am new to this. Do not put both hard drives on the same string as the controller will default to the lowest speed hard drive. In fact I would think about getting rid of the old drive entirely as its age means that it should be very slow.

Have you tried turning the led HD connector to the motherboard over?

You can get an Promise PCI controller card that will allow you to add some extra IDE ports. The controller will show the devices on it to be D0, D1, D2 etc. It looks like a SCSI device to the system but hooks up IDE devices.

You need to FDISK and format a new hard drive before windows can see it.

Hey Guys, first things first. I had an old hard drive from a crapped out laptop. My uncle gave me an USB Hard drive converter(unsure on it's brand, after it worked i threw out the box). Problem is that I used it several times between a mac and a pc(school and home computer) and now it give me an I/o error when I try to copy stuff and says it can't find the item when I try to delete something. I tried reformatting(all this is on a PC BTW). I tried plugging it into a mac at school, but it wouldn't show up as connected.

I just realised that I had a driver cd for it, but I have lost it and cannot find it(too many CD's to keep track of, lol), I was wondering if there was anything I could do to fix this problem. It is a fujitsu, 30 GB hard drive(though it when I was using it, it showed as a 20 GB) I would prefer not to have to buy a new adapter or hard drive. I would just like to use this, to store all my music on, because the hard-drive on this computer(it's only 40GB getting a new one soon) is getting cluttered with music.
Now for my second problem, which isn't really my problem at all, but I digress. My friend was using her microphone(on an XP Home) and half way through her conversation it cut out. I have got her to check all her sound settings, no low sound settings on her computer. She has tried recording messages but nothing happens as if a microphone is not plugged in. The particulars are regarding a 32 bit version of Vista Home Basic Edition on an Everex laptop. It began giving startup error messages about an imminent hard drive failure months ago, requesting F1 to continue. Eventually the messages began to appear while the PC was running. The user disabled the msgs and the laptop continued to function for months, without any apparent problem beyond the boot msg.

I ran chkdsk 3 times in a row and saw the exact same named cluster errors every time, although the utility said after each pass that they'd been repaired. Then I ran the HDAT2 utility. It ran for about 7 hours, and it also said that it had repaired clusters. Subsequent boots however. always gave the same imminent HDD failure msg, press F1, etc....

Although it's an Everex laptop, I have no Everex CD, so I tried to boot using a 32 bit Dell Vista Home disk. I hear a lot of noises. But I never get a thing to pop up on the screen. Same non-result with a Spotmau Bootsuite CD. The only thing I got to work on a disk was the one with the HDAT2 utility. So I put the Vista disk in a disk reader which plugs into a USB port. (It's a Targas DVD-ROM reader). I wasn't sure just how to change the boot order in setup to access the disk in the reader so I simply put the hard drive last. Didn't do a thing - it just attempted to boot from the HDD. By this time it was blue screening with an unmountable boot volume, so I put another hard drive in the laptop. I have been having a running battle with something called E2Give for the past several weeks. I have used PC-cillin and it cannot get rid of all of it. I also have used AdAware and Spybot, to no avail. I would appreciate any help, as I am getting tired of the Warning window popping up every time I go to open a program from the desktop. I have searched and found some threads about this already, and have tried some of the solutions, but got concerned when the instructions got very specific to individual files on the submitter's computer, and the advisor said to be very careful. So I stopped.

i called technical support and told them my router keeps timing out after 5 minutes. I only can access the setup page. I don't know what the problem could be. This is my new replacement product and still it's doing what the first one did. what else can i expect from linksys!!

i really need help...well my computer does!

i've installed vista ultimate 64 on my computer. and ever since it either blue screens driver error which i have updated my graphics card. still blue screens

and some time it just randomly freezes the hard drive light flashes but the mouse or keyboard or nothing on screen works at all.

Have you installed the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard yet? This can sometime cause problems like this.

Is your power supply powerful enough to handle the load of your computer? Usually 500 to 600 watts is good.

Double check to see if the computer may be overheating? Usually by leaving the side of the case open temporarily as a test for maximum airflow. Clean and blow out any dust and cobwebs found.

After trying to copy a image for school I get a message from ESET saying it just blocked a trojan. In the next second I get maybe 50 error-messages, the background turns black, all my shortcuts dissapears and the computer reboots. This happened after rebooting again. Now the system is more stable, but extremely slow and I get messages about hard drive and RAM failiure (I could not start the task manager before, but now it works).
Anyways, I ran some malware-removal tool and found 2 trojans, but before beeing able to remove them, the system crashed.

So I need some help here...

I took the hard drive (a barracuda 7200.7 30 gig by seagate) out of my dell Pc when I got this laptop for Christamas(wife). I was told that I could take the hard drive out put it in an external hard drive case. I did so, however, it recognizes it as Mass storage device/ then it says the new hardware is installed and ready to use/ then it says there was a problem during install and the hardware my not work. I have been through MS Support /Seagate/ support/ Gateway support. Please I have so much data on the drive it is extremely important. Any help would be incredible!!!!!!! Thanks

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

PS Is any more info required?

...which are caused by an MS update which they messed up the file-coding on and may get around to fixing sometime.
It's not critical, but you could get rid of it by uninstalling KB3022345 and/or KB3068708 and hiding the latter when it reappers in your offered updates list.

Please post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSUR.Persist.log files.

Hi all,

I recently installed a plug and play Ethernet adapter into my pc which is Win7. I am trying to LAN with a windows XP pc (which previously worked with my onboard adapter).

When I view the status of the Local area connection, it shows that there are packets being sent and received to and from both pcs. But I CANNOT see the win XP pc in my network as I am not on the existing network with it?

Hi, i have some problem with my IE 7 recently.
When i surf some sites, mostly hotmail. I always get the message "object moved here". So when i click on a page, it will direct me to a page that writes "object moved here" and then i'll need to click on the word "here" before i can access my page.

Recently, i cant seem to see all the images and yes, i can't see all the smilies and icons on the post thread now, which is wierd and i get this message when i'm surfing the net at times:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address

which i find it wierd because my messenger is still able to connect and my brother's computer which uses the same connection is also able to connect but my internet just doesn't seem to be able display the webpage.

A:IE 7 giving problems

Hi bearbear,

please try running IE7 without addons to see if the same happens:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
iexplore -extoff
- Click OK
- Test with a few sites to see it the same problem occurs...please bear in mind that when you run IE with no addons, some website will cease to work as normal if they depend on certain addons. Ignore any new problems, just try to concentrate on the original issue and post back your findings please.

If that doesn't give any results, it may be an idea to temporary disable your firewall for a little bit and run IE in its normal mode. Some firewalls include features which affect how webpages load and are displayed so it could be a configuration problem. Remember to re-enable your firewall when you have finished testing.

Have you previously upgraded from IE6 to version 7? If yes, did these problem used to happen previously?

Hello, I've just set up a RAID1 configuration using two 750GB Samsung F1 HDD's. Also on the scene is a third 750GB HDD which is currently redundant but will be used to create a backup of the other drives. On top of that I have a third HDD installed (1TB) for backing up everything.


The problem is that I have started to notice my PC freezing up, whilst the hard drives start to seek. This can be whilst playing music, browsing the net, scanning for malware and so on. I accept that it may be because of a combination of all of the above at the same time, but the freeze time is around 4 seconds (surely this shouldn't be happening). When the drives start to spin they also make a noise, which is kind of clicky (as far as I have noticed they only make the clicky noise once).

What does everyone think?

I've been having some wierd problems with my computer. Right now they're not a huge deal, but i'm afraid they might lead to bigger problems in the future. Here are some of them:

*When I try to delete a file, the system deletes it, but the file icon doesn't disappear until i close the window and open it again.

*If I create a new folder, folder's icon doesn't show until i close the window and open it again.

*Sometimes when I create a new folder and try to open that folder, an error message comes up that says "Cannot access disk"

Could these be caused by a problem with the hard drive?

Yes it could be. I would back up all important data right now just in case. After backing up I'd run a check disk on the system or use a program like Spinrite to check the disk. You could use one of the 100 programs there to check the SMART data. This could also be the sign of a virus as well double check your security software by running something like Malwarebytes or Super AntiSpyware.

So, the story behind this problem is that I have a Western Digital external My Book. And it was working fine - until one day I just see that there's no drive listed under "My Computer". Weird, I thought, and so I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in. The drive spun up, lights came on, and then it turned off, and started doing this over and over, so I unplugged the drive again. What the heck was going on?

So, I restart the computer, try again and no dice, try restarting with the drive plugged in, plugging it in after boot. No go on anything. Finally, I take the drive out of the enclosure, and just plug it straight into the motherboard through a SATA cable, to see what was up, if maybe it was just power not getting to the drive correctly through the external enclosure or something like that.

Funnily enough, it shows up in the bios. Perfectly fine, shows the right amount of space, what drive it is, yada, yada... But when I start up Windows, it doesn't show the drive in My Computer, and does not exist in either Disk Management or Device Manager.

Any thoughts?

I wanted to use my old ata hard drive for extra storage, my new one is sata. At first it had windows on it but it worked ok anyway. I downloaded maxblast 4 (it is a maxtor) and had it format it and set it up as a storage drive. Once I did that my boot time went way up.

When it gets to the blue screen it sits there for several seconds and then when it gets to the desktop it sits there. Total for cold boot well over a minute and warm boot is faster but still not right. If I disable the drive it boots normally.

I don't know what to do but this must be avoidable somehow. thanks

About one week ago I plugged my SATA hard drive from 3GB/s to 6GB/s port. Now every time I restart my computer it says at the launching there is a new hardware installed to the computer, how to get out of this?
Other problem is that I plugged an old hard drive with IDE port to my motherboard and launched my computer, and now it says the new hardrive at the launching too.
My actually problem is that now it reseted my BIOS launching order and i could't find my OS hard drive. Eventually I found it and restarted it but now my SATA hard drive is called "IDE seagate..." in BIOS.
Of course it is actually SATA III but why BIOS told me that it's called IDE. I don't have any jumpers in actually IDE hard drive, do I need to add the slave jumpers on it?

Hey all. I just installed a new WD caviar blue 320 gb ata HD on my hp pavilion d4790y. When I go to install an OS it it lists 2 partitions on disk 0. One of them is C: of course, and the other is H:.... C: is a 95mb partition and H: is the other 319 gb. As we all know windows wants to install everything on the C: drive (mine being 95mb) and wont let me install on H:. This is not my first time installing a hard drive, but it is my first time with one having drive letter assignments. Any wisdom about possibly how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on the version of windows you are installing,there should
be a link on the partition selection page that says more options.
Click that and there will be options to delete partitions and create partitions.
Delete both and create a new one the full size of the drive.
If you are installing windows 7,it will create a small partition for system
activation files and a larger one for windows,when you install.
Are you sure that is a new drive?
The partition setup is pretty much the layout that windows 7 uses.

So I got a new Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB hard drive for Christmas. Yippee, right? Not so much. I installed the drive and backed up my data onto it. I then reformatted the drive to install Windows. Windows installed ok with a couple bumps but works ok for the most part. My hard drive showed up ok. Everything was good. After installing some updates and shutting down, my computer would hang on the shut down screen for at least an hour. So I restarted with the physical button. Then my hard drive is saying it needs to be formatted to be usable. I was reluctant but ended up formatting and recovering my data with other software. I tried copying some files onto it and that worked ok. Now the hard drive doesn't show up. When booting, chkdsk will come up and complete then the drive shows up. Then it will disappear again. Now chkdsk comes up to stage 2 and the screen goes blank. What should I do? Is this windows related or is it the drive? Is there a way to make chkdsk come up for sure when I start? I've tried unplugging the drive, restarting then plugging it back in. Any help would be appreciated.

Check your system (CMOS) setup and make sure the hard drive settings are correct. If it doesn't have an auto detect for the hard drives you can probably get the settings off the label on the drive.

Was the computer booting ok and then it suddenly started doing this or is this a new installation?

Check the cable connections to the drives and the jumper settings (especially if you have installed any other hardware in the computer.

Well, last night my hard drive on its own started spinning rappidly. Woke me up infact it was so loud. Out of curiosity why this was happening when nothing couldn't have change any settings. I haven't done much to the computer sence the incident. I feel like the spinning at its speed could in-fact could hurt the hard drive itself. So I turned it off.

Thinking it was a hardwear problem I restarted and put it in Bios. The hard drive spinning didn't happen. And it only happens when its software is active. Like its moving a larg amount of files around. Thinking it might have just been a large update I let it run for 20 mins and it didn't help it just countinues to spin rashly.

So far I haven't tried a whole lot. The only thing I think it could be is a system update that went south.... Or atleast hoping.

The spinning sounds sounds like your installing a video game. But, a very very large one that wont stop. Even when you install a video game the hard drive will slow down inbetween files sounding like morris code. But this is a hard line heavy spinning sound if this helps at all.

Hmm. System info might also help, I run windows Vista 64 bit, Quad Core 2.66Ghz, 4 Gigs of ram, 750 GB Hard Drive. I dont know much about specifics of a computer. Everything is HP. This is what it says on the computer itself and dont know much else to say about it. Don't want to turn it on due to the heavy Hard Drive running.

On that window does it show defrag on a schedule and was it around the time that you heard the drive working?
