2.g Ghz band signal stronger than 5Ghz band

Q: 2.g Ghz band signal stronger than 5Ghz band

Is it odd that, according to InSSIDer, the 2.g Ghz band signal is stronger (-45) than that of the 5Ghz band (-61)? My router is a Netgear WNDR4500. Just wondering. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It really depends on where your wireless router is compared to your computer.

5 GHz signals are effected more by walls, distance, etc. than 2.4 GHz.

Hi there!

So about 2 months ago, I purchased the AC53 when I moved in to a house share.
We have Virgin Media SuperHub that does both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
When I installed it, it worked fine and connected excellently to the 5G band, a few days ago however the 5G connection disappeared off my list and now it always connects me to the 2.4ghz band.

Tried resetting my SuperHub and re-installing the drivers and software utility for the AC53 but alas it doesn't show. My phone however can find and connect to the 5G band.

I'm a bit confused as where to go from here!

Any help would be much appreciated!

A:ASUS USB-AC53 Dual Band - Can't detect 5Ghz band

After re-installing you can't connect at all or just only connect to 2.4?

Can you run ipconfig /all and post back the results.
Click Start, in the search box type cmd, under programs right click on cmd and select "Run as Administrator".
In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all and press enter.
Next right click within the command prompt and select "Select All" press enter.
Paste the results back in this thread.

I am using the lastest Apple Airport Extreme Router which supports 2Ghz and 5Ghz bands. There are 3 iPhones, 4 iPads, and 2 Apple TV's in my home. I want my PC to connect to the 5Ghz band. Any help would be appreciated.

first off im not real saavy with computers... obviously right.  i recently bought a dual band router.  its a netgear nighthawk ac 1750. i have it hooked up, but my computer doesn't recognize the 5 ghz band or its just not on the list of available networks.  when i go to the device manager under network adapters, it lists i have a qualcomm atheros ar9485 802.11 b/g/n wifi adapter. when i get into the settings of that i try and do an update and it comes back and says i have the latest update.  dont have alot of money to buy a newly updated computer that would probably and certainly work well with the new dual band router. just wondering if there is any other options besides buying another computer?  please help as i really don't know a heck of a lot about computers, however i am trying to learn.

Hi, I've had the DIR-825 router for more than a year now and I've never once been able to see the second SSID that broadcasts at 5Ghz. I've set up both bands with identical settings and I have a wireless N network adapter in my laptop, but it only ever sees the 2 Ghz SSID, never the 5 Ghz one. Shouldn't I be able to see it?

Thanks for any help!

Only if the adapter is also a dual band..
Many adapters listed as Wireless "N" operate in only the 2.4 GHZ range (G). They use 3 channels to get 150 Mbps.

The D-LInk DWA-160 Extreme-N is dual band.

Greetings,

I'm having issues with my wireless 5Ghz connection, since my laptop will no longer find it.
Well, if I disable the network adapter and enable it back on, the 5G connection will show up for a few seconds and then disappear. However, I cannot connect to it, even if I try during the short time it shows up.

My network adapter is a Killer Wireless-N 1202.

Now, the router is working properly, because my phone does detect the 5Ghz band and can connect to it, with no problems.

I think the issue might have started after I updated my network adapter's drivers. which I did this Sunday at around 2:00AM. However, later on that day when I turned on my laptop, I had no issues with 5G.

I noticed the issue last Tuesday. During Monday last week my Internet provider changed the modem and router. However, I didn't use my laptop that day and only noticed the issue on Tuesday, when my laptop couldn't find any connection and asked me to choose one.

The main router I used to have was a Linksys and now it's a Huawei one (which is both a modem and a wireless router). That being said, I've never connected wirelessly to either of those, but to a Netgear r7000 which I connected to them.

Yesterday, I tried hard resetting the Netgear router, thinking it might have been experiencing some kind of conflict with the new modem/router, but my laptop still could not find 5G yet my phone could.

I used the "netsh wlan show drivers" line on CMD and it did show my net... Read more

Can my Toshiba Model Satellite Pro C870-1E2 laptop work on the 5Ghz band with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.Tried posing this question to Toshiba but there appears to be a technical hitch there so unable to forward my question to them.

A:Can Satellite Pro C870 work on 5Ghz band?

Hi

The Wlan frequency depends on the WLan card.
I think the notebook was equipped with the Realtek RTL8723AE WLan card which supports the 802.11 B / G / N standard

5Ghz is available only using 802.11 A or N

802.11 N standard operates at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz but 5Ghz would be available ONLY if the WLan card would support additional 802.11 A standard; i.e 802.11 A / N.

But Realtek RTL8723AE doesn?t support 802.11 A and therefore the 5Ghz are not possible for this WLan module.

My PC is unable to detect 5Ghz band where rest of the devices at my home are detecting both the bands.
I have recently bought D-Link dual band router and installed at home. Router is working absolutely fine because I could see
my other laptop and Ipad are able to detect both the bands. So that says there no problem with the router configuration. Also the router which
I have bought is recently released, so there are no new updates are released yet.
As per the installation guide, 802.11a supports 5Ghz and IEEE 802 11b/g/n supports 2.4 Ghz.
My PC details :
Model : Sony SVF14A190X (an year old laptop)
Operating System : Windows 8.1 Pro, 64 Bit
Network Adaptor drivers: BCM43142 Wireless Network Adapter
Router Details: D-Link DIR-850L VER A.1 wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router.
The network adaptor which my laptop supports IEEE 802 11b/g/n..i.e.2.4 Ghz. I tried installing the Network Adapter drivers in compatibility mode, but that doesn't
help me at all to fix the issue. Also I even had an assistance from Sony Customer support and spent few hours, but unfortunately they couldn't fixed it.
When I cheked in Command prompt, it says following thing :
Radio Types Supported : 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b.
How should I upgarde network drivers to : 802.11n 802.11a 802.11g 802.11b
Please help me to fix this issue.

A:Unable to detect 5Ghz band in my Sony Vaio PC

I think that the wifi adapter in your laptop does NOT support 5ghz. The adapter supports 802.11a which is a very old standard but it does NOT support 802.11ac which is the newest standard that supports 5ghz.

If you really wish to connect to your new router on the 5Ghz band then you could get an external USB dongle that would work.

Until recently I used the 2.4GHZ band for my pc and my son used 5GHZ for his laptop on our D-link router.
A couple of weeks ago our provider installed a new Cisco modem/router-in-one (the old modem didn't work any more). We use the D-link as a second router. The 2.5Ghz band is no problem but my son doesn't get internet access with 5Ghz although if I log into the router I don't see anything wrong. Any help would be welcome.

A:No internet access on 5Ghz band with Dlink router

can we see an xirrus screen shot - the d-link is still broadcasting both signals
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

Hi,

I have a N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model WNDR3400. My question(s) is that if I connect with a wired cable, will I be connected to the 5ghz and avoid interference with those on the 2.4ghz connection?

For example, I have a wired connection with my Playstation 3 but i believe the Playstation 3 incapable of detecting the 5ghz when I do a wireless scan. Does this mean when I connect with a wired cable with the ps3 I use the 2.4ghz connection with other users and getting interference if they're doing something like streaming?

And finally, if my Laptop is unable to detect the 5.ghz connection does that mean I need some sort of adapter? Or does it have to do something with the settings. Its enabled and is on the default channel.
[Sorry one more question, where do I go to see who is currently using the internet connection in the setup]

Hello

I recently got the newest NETGEAR router device, the NETGEAR Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart WiFi Router, and I am unable to connect to the 5GHz WiFi it provides on its Tri-band WiFi. I am currently only on its 2.4GHz WIFI, which I assume is lesser than the 5G. I am able to connect to the 5GHz on my smart phone, so I know it exists from the router. I am running a windows 8.1 currently on a desktop on an HP Envy 700-213 Desktop PC.

Edit: My computer supports 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n radio types - which supports 5GHz WiFi
My adapter is a Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter

Any ideas for why I am unable to connect to this WiFi?

A:Unable to connect to 5GHz Wifi on NETGEAR Tri-Band Router

The most likely explanation is that the wifi adapter in your HP Envy 700-213 doesn't support the 5Ghz band.

If you really want to connect at 5Ghz you will need to get a new wifi adapter for your computer.

OK, this is my first time being a part of or using a tech related forum so here it goes:

I'm trying to help save a neighbor some money by fixing their wireless network.

WNDR3700 Dual band Netgear router.

2.4ghz wireless b/g/n with enabled SSID broadcast, channel=auto, mode set to 130Mbps
WPA-TKIP + WPA2-AES. wireless isolation is not enabled.

5Ghz wireless a/n enabled SSID broadcast, channel = 44, Mode is up to 300Mbps
No security encription. (i know...bad, but the lady has lots of kids and family members coming
and going from the house so she doesn't want one encripted). Video network enabled

Both Radio frequencies are enabled, fragment and CTS/RTS set to max

WPS settings = keep existing.

IPv6 not enabled, No repeating is enabled, No guest networks are enabled(however ssid broadcast is enabled for guest profile 1)
The problem, and reason for fixing the problem is that the 2.4 Ghz band light on the router is ON however the SSID is not being seen by any client in the house. the netgear interface says it is on and working. the neighbor needs the 2.4ghz band to work because the printer is wireless and will only recognize 2.4Ghz SSIDs. Also they have older nintendo DS clients they would like to use on the network.

During the day the 5 Ghz band works with very seldom (1-2) disconnects while the 2.4 Ghz band wont be visible to any device. in the evening both bands will come online, and very often will every computer get disconnected from either, the 5Ghz band wi... Read more

N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400.

I am trying to get a signal out in my garage at the opposite end of my router location. I am getting 1 bar and "poor" signal. I downloaded inSSIDer to analyse my signal and I notice that my "Wireless Network (5GHz a/n)" is not broadcasting anything. The checkbox for "Enable SSID Broadcast" is checked.

I have very limited knowledge of this stuff but it seems to me that if it is a dual band that I should be seeing 2 different signals, right?

All I see is this: Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n)

My Billion BiPAC 7800VDOX Dual Band Wireless VoIP ADSL2+ Router has two bands:  2.4GHz and 5GHz.  and is wirelessly connected to my laptop OMEN by HP Laptop PC  17-w007tx.  It always shows as connected via 5GHz band only.  My laptop also shows 5GHz band only in the list of available networks;  2.4GH does not show up in the list of available networks.  It is not so in my other laptop which is also connected to the same router and that laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks.  Thus, I can choose to connect to any of the two bands as per my choice. I have tested the router and it is working perfectly; there is nothing wrong with it.I wonder what can possibly be wrong in my OMEN laptop that it does not show both the bands which it should. At times, when I click to open the list of available networks, 2.4GHz may appear momentarily only and then disappears; thus I can not choose it for connection. I would appreciate any help to resolve this issue so that my OMEN laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks so as to choose either one for connection.

When my Carbon 5th is connected to 5 GHz Wifi it randomly resets (drops) after several hours (connection is being lost, Windows reports "Cannot connect to the network"). Sometimes it is possible to connect again manually, sometimes only reboot makes it work again. Connection to 2.4 GHz Wifi always works totally fine. I've seen several similar topics on Intel forums with the same issue, looks like it touches several Intel WiFi adapters. No solution have been found except using only old 2.4 GHz protocols or external WiFi adaptors. I tried different drivers and many parameter sets on my router - nothing solves this issue. It is very sad to have only 20mbps with 2.4 GHz while new standards offer more than 100mbps. Did you face this issue? Any ideas to solve it out?

I should get dual or single band wifi for a laptop that I would like to purchaseClick to expand...

do you mean a router
or as part of the laptop spec ?

what router do you have and does it work in dual band simultaneously

the advantage of the 5ghz signal is if you are in a crowded 2.4ghz environment then 5ghz helps avoid interference - also the coverage is wider - although the 5ghz router i have linksys - does not seem to be

if your current router only works in 2.4ghz , then no advantage in the short term

some routers are advertised as dual band - but you have to choose between 2.4 or 5 ghz and so ALL devices will need to support 5ghz

For the benefit of those rebels (like me) that don't allow Windows to update itself automatically, you'll need to go to the Update site tomorrow to collect this important patch for the very serious 'hole' in IE 6 & 7 ; http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms10-mar.mspx

There will, apparently, also be a patch for IE 8 vulnerabilities rated as 'Critical'

"The out-of-band security bulletin is a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer and will also contain fixes for privately reported vulnerabilities rated Critical on all versions of Internet Explorer that are not related to this attack",so I'll have to install that, even though I don't use IE 8! Unless you have a dedicated high speed fibre optic connection all of your own, your internet connection performance is not governed by the capabilities of you computer, as a computer. The slowest performing computer available can process data quicker than any normal domestic connection can deliver it.

Internet performance depends on how each link in a communication chain works. The chain is : computer to router; router to modem; modem to exchange; exchange to ISP's servers. The only one you have any control over is the first section. Wi-fi performance is affected by distance, materials between computer and router, and aerial position and quality - and these you have some control over. You have no control over the bandwidth your ISP is delivering unless it is significantly less than you were offered when you took out the connection contract - then you start nagging them or change provider (if that is an option).

Go to www.speedtest.net to run a check on the bandwidth you are being supplied with. For a one-off test there is no need to set up an account, but it is useful if you wish to log changes over time.

Doing this for a friend of mine who is too scared to venture "out" this far. She just had WinXP installed in her computer. She says she now has black bands on both sides of her screen vertically. She has tried to eliminate them by stretching them out with the arrows but this doesn't work. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated. Thank you. AndyCNC

A:Band Of Brothers.....or what?

I would say it is the " monitor center " setting .It would be a button on the monitor itself . Adjust it first this way and then try the vertical to fine tune it .

Is there a way to retrieve a better signal when using a B adapter on one computer and then having a cross over cable go to the cat 5 port to the other cat 5 port (LAN)?

P.S. Is there any chat sites other than IRC's out there?

I live right by my cousin. he lives on the same street. I was just wondering if there was any way to strenghthen the signal. I would prefer the cheapest way.

A:Making Wi-fi signal stronger.

There are a number of ways. You can use directional antennas, signal boosters, or change the equipment to longer range equipment.

If you don't have line of sight to his house, you may have difficulty connecting with standard WiFi equipment.

I recently purchased a Linksys AC1750 EA7300 router. I want to use the 5 Ghz band, but it is not displayed in Network Settings. I only see my 2.4 Ghz band. My question is how do I change to the 5 Ghz band with this router? I cannot find an option to do that. On my previous router, RT-N56U, it was so easy. But I can't find a way to do it on this one.

Thanks

A:How Do I Access 5 GHz Band On AC1750?

Did you login to the router and see if it`s turned on ? Maybe it`s off by default. Login and go to the wireless settings, it has to be there.

Didn`t the router come with a manual ?

Dear Friends, hope all is well...

I noticed this light grey band on my screen. It was about 2-3 inches wide running from top to bottom or vice versa. I took some screenshot's of the window ( see attachments)

Have any idea what it might be? The computer from what little I've used it "appears" to be work properly?

The things that have obviously changed are a new hard drive, upgraded to Windows 7 Professional from Vista and I switched from Avira Free to Avast Free. The hard drive and OS upgrade were done by professionals not me...

Not sure if it's related but this morning there was an AVAST upgrade available when I first booted the computer. That is the first time I've seen the line again in about a week. It does go away sometimes in a minute or it may take about 10 minutes.

I ran the Dell System Detect app and it passed OK.

Is this another DELL snafu?

Is there anything I can do on my end to get rid of this or minimize it???

Thank You in advance for your care, cooperation and attention to this matter.
Sincerely, Ralph

I have the problem with my laptop, where a vertical band has suddenly begun appearing. I bought my laptop in 2013, so I don't really have any warranty remaining. I have replaced a screen before (I assume thats the only fix for this?) but it was an x201 and I must admit it wasn't the easiest fix I have done. Lenovo will totally rinse me to repair. I'm based in the UK, is it worth taking it to somewhere like PC world?  ?

Today we released Security Advisory 973882 and with it, two out-of-band security bulletins. These updates are MS09-034 (an Internet Explorer update) and MS09-035 (a Visual Studio update). At this time for customers who have applied MS09-032 we are not aware of any ?in the wild? exploits that leverage the vulnerabilities documented in 973882 and MS09-035. However, MS09-034 and MS09-035 work together to build further defenses against the known vulnerabilities in ATL.

My internet connection has been very iffy in the last year or so. There's another connection from across the street I can access but it's also not a good connection. (I live on a school campus with wireless campus set up).

IT guy said I should be sure I am connecting with Wireless N - not a/b/g.

How can I tell? I can't remember.

I have a dell laptop and it's not that old. It says in the hardware manager that it is capable of N. How do I check how it's connecting?

I have broadband internet with a router that has wireless built in. I connect wirelessly.

Thanks

Carla
