Unable to locate component

Q: Unable to locate component

My wife uses a Dell Inspiron 1100, running Windows XP. I had installed AVG anti-virus, but somehow it was deleted. When I tried to re-install it I could not. I cannot install or remove any programs. An error box appears upon starting computer which states McciTray app.exe - Unable to locate component. It stated this application failed because urlmon.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem. How can I locate the application. What I would really like to is remove all programs and start from scratch using re-installation CD. What do you recommend. Thanks in advance for your help.

Preferred Solution: Unable to locate component

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your first move should be to turn on Windows Update and get your system updated. You are still on SP2 which is no longer supported by Microsoft, the Windows Update will get you up to SP3. That alone may cure the problem.

Follow this guide to slipstream your copy of XP with SP3, that can then be used to run the System File Checker which will replace any missing or damaged files.

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/Slipstreaming_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3.html

To run the system file checker Click on Start and type sfc /scannow (exactly as written here with the gap) into the search box and hit enter. Follow the prompts and insert the slipstreamed disc when requested.

I can log on to my PC as one user but when I try to switch users I get the following error message:

"CSRSS.EXE unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because basesrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I also cannot save files to a shared network location or view any other users files whilst logged on except the person who is logged on.

The only way I can switch users is to restart the pc. I had a reply from the Windows XP Magazine forum which suggested I might have a trojan as there is a trojan process for csrss.exe.

I have had help from the HJT group and no malware was found on my PC. I've checked all windows files using sfc but I still have the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:CSRSS.exe unable to locate component

I believe a Repair Install may be in order, you are experiencing multiple issues.

Perform a Repair Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

Hey all, apparently on my family laptop a program was recently removed or something, and now I get an error message stating "This application has failed to start because MFC71U.DLL was no found. Re-Installing the application may fix this program.

I've searched to find out what VCUServe is, and apparently it's The Vaio installed camera component in the laptop. How can I go about getting this message to go away? I've heard there's a run command that can locate the origin of this problem and replace it.

If not, will simply finding a download for this VCUServe stop the problem? It's just a tad bit annoying, even though we don't use the camera.

Hi Folks, I have a Dell laptop, service pack 3. It is about five years old but it has been running smoothly, never had a virus or any other problem with it. I just use email and some surfing, itunes and photos, very light use. A few days ago when I tried to shut down I got a message that said something about unable to locate component "msoxlgbdru.dll and it would not shut down. I was falling alseep, so I just pushed the button to turn it off, which I have never done before. The next day when I tried to turn it on a screen came up that said "We are sorry for the inconvenience, windows did not start successfully" and then it said to start in safe mode and restore to last known good configuration. I selected safe mode, and a screen came up with a box that says "This application has failed to start because msoxlgbdru.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. It says winlogon.exe at the top. Then it just sits there and never starts in safe mode.

What can I do?

Also, I know how to do regular maintenance, disc defragmentation and virus and spyware scans, but I don't understand all of the scary lingo so if you have any advice, please talk to me like I am five LOL.

I *really* appreciate any advice! Thanks!

A:Winlogon.exe unable to locate component- help please?

I should add that I also just tried starting in safe mode using the F8 key, and when I choose "Last Good Configuration" I get the message about the msox thing again and it says reinstalling it may fix the problem.

Hi Everyone,

I am currently using Windows XP on my home computer. Today when I logged on, I immediately began receiving an extremely large amount of error notifications such as;

rundll.exe-Unable to locate component

firefox.exe-Unable to locate component

It didn't matter what application or file I tried opening, I kept receiving the same error message. I wasn't sure if this was a virus so i scanned my computer with AVG anti virus, it found a few tracking cookies as well as a few adware.

I also used registry mechanic, it found over 2000 problems, in which i then chose the fix it option and it then notified me that all problems were fixed.

Unfortunately, It was not fixed because i keep getting the same error notifications over and over. I've scanned my computer several times today with registry mechanic and every single time, it still finds more problems..not 2000..but roughly around 20 problems.

I'm not sure what else I need to do, Is this a virus or was something accidentally deleted? To my knowled... Read more

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. ? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.? Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the ... Read more

How did you "delete" this software? Did you uninstall it or simply kill the file(s)? Your problem appears to be related to "Spyware Doctor". As you have somehow removed the files for this program just reinstall it. If you want it then keep it but otherwise uninstall it again (using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel). This should solve the problem.

The one thing i see right from the start is you need to update xp to SP3. sp2 is no longer supported.as to the others it means something got corrupted somewhere and isnt able to work correctly. when you used the cleaner i truly hope a registry cleaner wasnt used as that might be why theres problems.

It started off with an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" message followed by 4 hexadecimal numbers, one of which being 0xc0000006. I was able to get past this point by popping in my XP Pro cd and running a repair. Upon rebooting my computer I received a error message that had the header "lsass.exe - Unable to Locate Component" with the message "This application has failed to start because" I was able to access my harddrive and replaced the lsass.exe file with a copy off my father's working computer but it still wouldn't read. Finally I did a repair install of XP and got the same lsass.exe error message on top of the regular setup screen. Since the setup seemed to be active (the screen went through a series of slides explaining how great the new XP is!) the 39 minute setup was still going over 90 minutes after it originally started. When the lsass.exe error box is closed, the computer automatically restarts.

Please help, my computer's warranty expired only a few weeks ago so I haven't been able to get any help from Dell support and I'm really running out of options!

I'm running Windows XP - Media Center Edition on Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz, 1.5G RAM

Earlier, Norton 360 detected and blocked several intrusion attempts, but stated that everything was secure.

Shortly thereafter, EVERY program that attempted to open would generate the following pop-up message, "[program name] UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT - The application has failed to start because msefrms.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I click OK to acknowledge this message, only to have it reappear. After several "OK clicks", however, the program usually opens and functions properly.

I restarted my PC to get into safe mode to run a virus scan, but the message appears upon Windows boot (even on winlogon, services, lsass, etc.). Again, a few clicks of OK gets me past the message and into Windows.

I haven't been able to find ANY reference to msefrms.dll on the web. I was requested to post my HJT log - any help is greatly appreciated!

So, I uninstalled IE and now I can't boot up. I'm getting an error that it's unable to locate component iertutil.dll. I found a fix to a similar problem but I can't make it work for me.

I'm supposed to use the winxp os system install disk. Go to start, run and type in: sfc /scannow. This is supposed to check and reinstall lost or corrupt files. The problem is I can't boot up to a point where I can select run. I can't even get into safe mode

If I boot with the system disk I can get into system repair. Is there a way to do this from DOS?

A:unable to locate component iertutil.dll

I just discovered that I can hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and get to Run thru the File menu of that window. I typed in the sfc /scannow command but when I hit Run I get basically the same error - This application has failed to start because iertutil.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

What now?

Hi,

My wife's laptop keeps coming up with the following error message every restart-

title of message box: "AppleSyncNotifier.exe unable to locate component" and content of message: "This application has failed to start because CoreFoundation.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem

When she asked me to look the screen had frozen, so i forced a shutdown, but on re-start the above appeared. I ran an AVG virus scan and it found and archived a virus, FakeAlert.SGG in the virusvault. The laptop appears to be a bit slower than normal according to my wife, so i'm wondering if there's a residual problem related to the error message?

My wife uses ITunes and i have deleted and reinstalled the programme in case it was the problem, but that hasn't sorted matters out!

Any advice on how to remove the startup error message and sort any residual problems gratefully received.

Many thanks.

IPHSend.exe unable to locate component.

This application has failed to start because xprt5.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application
may fix the problem.

I press enter and passes the warning and computer works fine. Realize xprt5.dll is from AOL. How do I get IPHSend.exe to stop recognizing xprt5.dll. Have Registry Fix and have run it but still occurs each time I turn computer on. Very annoying.

Thanks Marvin

I have Windows XP, 60GB HDD. I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, just left the room, and came back in to a rebooted computer, at a screen wanting me to insert my system disk. Well, I've tried a number of things, and all end up at the same thing. I end up with an error window saying in the menu bar "lsass.exe unable to locate component" and message box saying "this application has failed to start because" and then nothing else except the ok button. I have tried safe mode, repair console, debugging mode, setup, and even tried copying the file from the system disk to the system32 file. I've also run across something else while trying to get around this. Don't know if it's because of the many ways I've tried to get around it. Along with this lsass.exe window that pops up, it's continuosly trying to start setup. I try safe mode, and it says that "setup cannot run in safe mode", and the lsass window, and when I try to start normally, it gives me a screen saying that setup is restarting, then goes to the Windows installing screen, and it has 39 minutes left, and pops up the lsass window, and doesn't do anything more. No matter what I do, I have the lsass.exe window, and setup trying to run. Does anyone have any suggestions other than formating, to fix this problem? I have searched the forum, and the internet, and have found nothing more besides that one suggestion. I've repaired my comp several times... Read more

Hello,

I have been struggling for a week trying to get my father in laws laptop working again. It is on Vista, 64bit. Upon start up it gets the following error. logonui.exe unable to locate component  Winmm.dll is missing. When I click OK it continues to boot but it can't authenticate anyone so a lot of programs won't start. It boots into safe mode with no apparent errors. I tried copying a Winmm.dll and re-registering it but that failed. Here is the log from Hijack this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'll add more information on the problem and what I have tried so far.
This computer has had the problem of looping on updates for months now. It would get updates but after restart, while it was trying to configure them it would say download failed and revert everything. I spent days on that trying to uninstall updates and reinstall them. I got it to where it had all but 2 updates and couldn't get any further. My father in law didn't want to have to reinstall all of his programs so he opted to put it off for a while to see if I came up with a fix. In the meantime, more updates tried to come in and failed. Also it looks like they installed office 2007. That may have been when this new problem started. They also installed adobe flash the same day.

This is what I have tried, in order.

1. Last known good configuration, nothing.

2. Malwarebytes
That found several things but nothing that looked too bad and removing them didn't help.

3. Startup Repair from Install disk (said found no problems)

4. System from Install Disk
I thought this one was going to work. There were lots of restore points. I picked one just before they installed office. It ran for a while then said the restore point was no good and reverted. No problem, I could just pick another. Nope. When I went back to restore all the previous restore points were just gone.

5. Clean boot

6. SFC /Scannow
Found some errors. Said it couldn't fix them... Read more

I have posted my HJT log below. If anyone has seen this problem before and knows a solution please let me know.

You don't state if COOO135 ever worked or if it just stopped working.

Which is it?

By the way, does your title have a typo? If I Google "cooo135" I only get this thread. I do get Google hits for both Cool35 and Cool135.
