Q: Solved: thomson tg782t modem & router & printer connection problem

I have installed new bigpond thomson tg782t broadband to my networked 3 computers that also connect with a sharp ar-m162 multifunction printer thru ethernet cables and router. When I try connecting the ADSL thru the new modem the printer goes off line and won't print. Operating system on all 3 computers is windows xp. Also sometimes the LAN operating system on the main computer running everything keeps flicking between connected and unplugged/ disconnected.
Has any one got any ideas on how to fix this very annoying and time consuming problem. Much appreciated any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys,

ok so i recently upgraded our modem because the old one was crapping out all the time, it was just old. So we got a new one through telstra, the thomson tg782t and it worked fine. We had 3 laptops, 2 iphones, and an ipod touch all being able to connect, although in the last week or so.. nothing can connect wirelessly? we thought it might just be a faulty or defective modem, since it was only 2 months old it was still under warrenty.so we got it replaced through telstra once again free of charge, the new one came and we had the same problem. Can anyone think of what might be causing this problem?

Thanks in advanced,
Jordan Fuchs

This may be a little long winded but ill start from the beginning. I have 2 TG782T Thomson gateways 1 from Telstra and 1 retail version. Recently I starting having a problem where the PC's in the network (there are 3 connected at present) would not connect to the net, though all the PC's network sharing centres showed full internet connectivity. This problem was completely random as at times all the PC's could access the net where other times none could. Thinking it may be a router issue I disconnected the Telstra router and switched to the Retail router I also set all the PC's to static IP's as I have had a similar issue to this before and that sorted it. All seemed well last night as all PC's were connecting well. Fast forward to this morning and we are back to square one. All PC's are still on static addresses so that has not changed but they all randomly gain and lose net and there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Even more frustrating is that network share centre still shows full internet connectivity at all times. The problem seems to persist to all internet based services as well not just browsers (Curse, Wow, Steam etc). Oh and i have also tried disabling all firewalls (briefly) to see if that was the issue to no avail.

I'm completely lost and any help would be appreciated.

I apologise in advance for my ignorance / stupidity but I would really appreciate some help...

Five months ago we moved into a new apartment, and connected up our broadband; the ISP provides a Thomson Speedtouch modem (ST546 v6), which I understand from Tech Support is running software v4 (it was issued with V5, but rolled back to V4 for stability issues).

We prefer a WiFi network, so purchased a Belkin N Wireless Modem Router (F5D8636-4 v2); I connected it up ditching the ISP issued modem, and all worked well for four months. Suddenly it refused to see the ADSL connection - orange light flashing.

So after four nights of 'fault resolution' with Belkin, they decided to send me a replacement... which I finally received last night. It didn't work - same problem, flashing orange light.

I have the correct user name and password for the ISP - checked it not once, not twice, but four times. The Thomson Speedtouch works, but doesn't provide a WiFi environment.

Can I connect the Belkin modem router into the back of the Thomson and transmitt/carry the WiFi signal that way, and if so, how? I tried (the obvious to me) plug a ethernet cable from the Thomson modem into the Belkin, but nothing.. I'm guessing there are a few important steps I missed.

Please help.. if I have to call another Customer Services team where they don't speak English, I may cry*
(*Im a girl.. crying in the face of challenges is acceptable. Maybe)

I'm wondering if anyone can help. I have the above modem and I want it to connect to the internet automatically at windows startup. I have tried just putting it in startup and that doesn't work. All it does is bring up the window, prompting me to connect. There must be a way of making it connect automatically without needing to press connect.
If anyone has this modem and understands my problem, or knows what to do, I would be grateful for a step by step guide.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

I'm working for a firm in Cyprus with about 15 Computers online.

We experience many disconnects or rebooting procedures of the modem and in general slow browsing or stucking while trying to access webpages.
The provider made a check of the telephone line and they said it's a very stable line. Further they said it's our own fault, because we connect 15 computers to a switch/router (Dlink). This switch would cause the Modem (which is a combined Modem/Router with 4 Ethernet Ports) to have interruptions and disconnections.
If they send a technician, the service guy said, we might have to pay when they don't find a problem. They will test it with their own laptop!

I'm a little bit confused here, because we never had such a trouble before. Can this multiple switch to which all the computers connect to really cause an instability to the Thomson modem/router of the provider?

By the way, the speedtest always shows appropriate results even while browsing stucks. Can a module in the Modem be damaged? Bad firmware?

SBC sent me a Westell Proline F90-610025-06 modem/router for my new DSL account. It works fine on one computer, but when I connected it to a second computer through a Linksys switch (ethernet cables), the second computer was not able to obtain a different local IP number from the Westell. Both computers show a address conflict error when they are both on. I pushed the buttons in the advanced section of the Westell menu, but could not find any way to expand the range of IP addresses available. The only option I could find was to change the lease time on IP addresses, or switch from PPPoE to PPPoA. I pushed repair connection in the computer LAN menu, but the computer was not able to get a different IP address. The Westell just kept giving both computers the same IP. This is my first broadband connection, so I am an amateur on connecting them.

Windows XP SP2 I tried powering everything down, and restarting in this order: Westell, Linksys, computers It didn't help. Manually inputting a different IP address on one computer's LAN connection didn't do anything either. How do I get the Westell to give different local IP addresses to different computers?

After trouble shooting on my own, I'm stuck. My current situation is that I have a Netopia (Cayman 3346) DSL modem-router (not wireless) that is connected to a (Linksys E100) wireless router. I currently run a small business that has two other computers connected through the Linksys router and are properly configured on the network.

Problems, Thursday night was the last time I could connect using the wireless connection. I cannot connect wirelessly now, but I can connect through the Netopia modem-router.

Manual Troubleshooting included:

-CMD for proper release/renew (IP shows 192.)
-Hard reset both modem and router.
-Manually configured the Linksys router.
-Called Netopia and manually configured modem-router successfully
-Again, computers hard-wired to modem-router will connect.
-Lights on Linksys router are lit and working properly (i.e wifi icon, power, and line 1)

Any ideas? I found in the Netopia settings of the WAN to be configured this way, should I change to IP Address?

Any help would be appreciated as my business is hindered by only having one computer operational.

I'm trying to help my friend.

The basic situation is this:

His only source of internet for his office is shared with another party. It is a DSL line. There is a Verizon DSL modem that goes to a physical firewall / router and then there's CAT5 serving the other party from that router.

My friend has no access to the existing router / firewall settings and it is really impossible to work with the other party. So is it possible to split the connection before their router so that my friend can have his own separate firewall and router?

A:Solved: DSL Modem to Physical Firewall/Router - Possible to split connection BEFORE f

If they pay for a block of static IP's yes. Verizon modem to switch, then switch to each router each with one of the static IP's. Otherwise with the the connection from the existing router you can plug into the WAN of another router which will create a separate network, but if you have to do any port forwarding it won't work.

Hi all,
My dad recently brought a Belkin N+ wireless modem router for my parents home and asked me to set it up for him (as he is not very tech-savy). I set the router up with no problems whilst the rents were away in Malta on holiday and had no problems for about 4 days.

When they arrived back the internet was still fine until the next day when for no apparent reason the connection dropped and i had to power cycle it to make it work again. Now at least once a say the router will drop the connection and i have no idea why. I have tried every logical combination of settings and i cannot stop it from dropping the connection.

I've called up Belkin tech support but they were useless and told me to try everything I have already tried which is:

Static IP.
Fixed DNS.
Power cycling.
Firmware update.
Checking the log file.
Restoring defaults.
Turning the firewall off.
Adding MAC addresses of the relevant computers to the routers "safe" list.
Port forwarding ...

And the list goes on.

All i can think of now is to call BT and post my Router settings here (these are the most stable settings i've found so far).
Can someone please check out these settings and make sure i haven't done somethign incredibly stupid? I am a software engineering student and fairly confident of my abilities but it would be nice to have another opinion (not Belkins).

Earlier today I attempted to change the setting on my Westell 6100 modem such that it would simply bridge the connection to my Linksys WRT54GS router, basically involving setting the router to bridge only and turning DHCP off. Now I no longer get an internet connection through my router when previously the connection had worked perfectly fine before. I following the steps of cloning the MAC address to the router and have done the proper resetting steps (computer, them router, then modem) but I simply can't get an internet connection through my router. The process to set up simple bridging from the modem what supposed to end up with the internet light no longer turning on but the light turned back on following one of the resets.

Currently, I can connect to the internet through the modem just fine but I get nothing when I include the router. I'm not sure if there are some other settings I'm supposed to be changing as I can't seem to find anything past what I've already done when researching online. At this point I would just be happy reverting the settings I've changed but I don't know how to access the modem now that DHCP is off.

Basically, I'd prefer to be able to get the router working with these new settings but if that proves too difficult (as I've heard it can be when trying to get Westell modems to work with Linksys routers) I'd like to learn how to access the modem and change the settings back to what they were (prefer... I'm switching from AT&T U-verse to Comcast since comcast can offer speeds up to 5x faster.

As you might know At&T uses ethernet as incoming signal vs. Comcast that uses 75 ohm cable.

I need to buy a new modem and router to install the new Comcast service.

I have two questions:

1) What is better? the combo modem/router units (i.e. Motorola SBG6580) or buying a separate stand-alone modem Motorola 6141 modem + Netgear N750 wireless router)?

2) I do have one issue to overcome. I have one TV in my house that is wired for cable only. That is, it has a cable run going to it. It's too difficult for me to install an ethernet run to it, so I'm stuck having to use the cable run. Are there modem/routers that have a cable OUT so that i can feed this TV its hard-wired signal?

So I just received a new modem/router from CenturyLink (previously Embarq). It is a ZyXEL Pk5001Z and has both the modem and router together. Set up was pretty easy and everything worked fine except I have one computer connected to the Wifi and can't get any of the other computers connected via Wi-Fi. Currently I'm on the computer hooked up through a LAN port and it works fine. Right after I hooked up the modem the only changes I made were to the SSID and WPA2 password. My dad connected to the router and it asked for the WPS pin and he was able to connect.

When trying to connect on any other computer it asked for the WPA2 password but then after a few seconds it says it is unable to connect. After trying it a few times I figured that it was something to do with the WPS so I turned it off on the modem and it still didn't work. I also turned off the WPA2 and all security and it is the same thing. My fathers laptop is still connected perfectly fine and works as well as mine though the lan port. I've tried on multiple computer and phones and it is the same thing. I have everything setup exactly the same as on my dads laptop and it just won't connect.

Hi, there. I need some help. I had recently changed usage from Aztech G modem to Belkin G+ MIMO modem. After setting everything up, I noticed some strange connection problems.

Firstly, when I try to access the Internet, the loading of the web pages seemed to have SLOWED down instead of improving!(Though, I have noticed that I am able to download files faster) I must have missed a setting or something...

Secondly, the other strange problem, I can't access Google!!! I can access Yahoo and MSN but I can't access Google! So strange!!! Both problems seem to happen in both browsers(Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox)

I hope you can help me ASAP, because I really need to know whether to return the new router modem or not! Thank you!

Hello, this is my first post here and I have a router problem I would appreciate some help on. I find situations similar to mine in the other posts but not exactly.

I have a PC running WinXp pro sp2. I am on Embarq DSL. My DSL modem (Sprint 645 series) was provided by my ISP a few years ago. For about 2 years now I have had a linksys WRT54GS wireless router in line and everything has been fine (good internet connection for my pc and good wireless signal for my two other computers). I use Internet Explorer.

Yesterday, I attempted to secure my wireless signal. I did lots of research on line to get instructions on how to do this. The advice I used said to press the reset button on my router. Upon doing this, I lost my internet connection coming through my router to the pc, therefore the wireless signal is also no more. I can bypass the router with a cable directly from the modem to the pc and access the internet fine.

I have tried powering off everything and then back on with the modem, router, and pc in that order.

With the cable from the modem to the router plugged in the internet port on the back of the router and a cable connecting the router port 1 to the pc, the following lights are on burning solid as follows (from left to right): the rectangular light (Cisco Systems), power, WLAN, ethernet port 1, and internet.

Can I get some advice on how to overcome this problem? Thank You very much!

A:Solved: Netopia Modem with Linksys Router Problem

As long as you aren't doing any port forwarding, you can use a simpler solution.

Logon to the web based setup of the router and change it's base address from to

This will eliminate the routing conflict and allow it to connect.

If you intend to port forward, please tell me exactly what part of these instructions you don't understand.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

My friend's router problem feels unfixable! i have come to the forum that i have used many times to aid me in other computer related problems. i hope that you guys have the answers that i need to fix this!

The last working Setup:

my friend was succesfully using a cable broadband modem to router to computer setup, all using ethernet cables as the medium of data transportation.

the problem:

My friend wanted to change a setting on his router. he went to and attempted to log on, but could not for the life of him remember his password! i then suggested that he reset the router to computer defaults via the reset button on the back of the router. he did this, and then unplugged and replugged in the router from the power source. he went back to the computer to see if he could log back in. everything looked fine. he noticed the task tray icon "local area connection" coming up and he also noticed the "internet connection" task try icon come up saying connecting, then after a few brief moments, went to disconnected. we were, however able to return to the router access page via and were able to log in with the default login and password (admin and admin). it appears that the connection is valid from the router to the computer, but not the internet.

a final note:

i have been assisting him over the phone, and i suggested that he power cycle the entire system, based on research. i had him turn off the computer, unplug the router, and... Read more

A friend of mine has a printer he wants to connect to.
It is now connected to a desktop computer and the desktop is connected to his router. What he wants to do is eliminate the desktop but still be able to access the printer from his laptop which is on the ether net via cat5.
My question is, what would he need to connect the printer to the network without going thru the desktop. The printer does not have an ethernet jack but it does have usb and the router does not. Router is cat5 or wireless only.

A:connecting printer thru modem or router

As far as I am aware, cant be done. USB and cat5 are different signals, so short of leaving the desktop running, he wouldnt be able to conect. Only other possibility I think is to connect the printer to the laptop via USB>

Hope I'm in the right section.

I have a suspicion that neighbour PC/laptops are visible on (maybe even using) my home wireless network.

Thing is when I go into Game & Application Sharing there are a bunch (6) of devices in the drop down. I recognise the names of our own devices but don't recognise the others.

Simple question (I think/hope): If they are in the drop down of "devices visible on your network" (according to the Thomson Manual) does that mean that they *could* be accessing my network.

(I use the WEP security option with a pretty complicated id - though it's the id that came with the modem!).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:Thomson TG585v7 modem - have I secured it properly

If there is an option, use WPA2 instead of WEP. WEP security can be broken in 10 mins and is outdated.

I am on dial-up out here in the sticks and am having trouble with new to me desk top connecting. It usually takes 15 min. to get a connection due to a busy signal heard from the computer speakers. When it does connect it is 16.8 or 26.4 kbs. After disconnecting and re-connecting a couple of times I get 49.2 kbs. I did not have this problem with my previous desk top, always connected the first try and at 45.3kbs. As far as the busy signal when I dail the same number on the phone there is no busy signal. When I purchased this unit the shop had to install a modem due to being on dial up. It is an Airlink 101 56K V.92 PCI internal modem. I have tried ISP suggestions with no improvement. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just moved across town in DFW and now have SBC DSL. They gave me their 2Wire modem/router and I'm confused about something. As long as my computers (macs and PCs) are connected to the modem/router with ethernet cables, I can print to my old Laserjet 4000n with out any problems. But as soon as I go wireless with any of the computers, I can no longer see or connect to the printer that is still hardwired into the 2Wire unit. When I had Verizon DSL the modem/router they gave me was able to allow wireless printing from my laptops to the hardwired HP Printer feeding into a Westel modem/router.

Can anyone tell me is this is the nature of the 2Wire units? Why do the computers (Macs and PCs) still see each other when wireless but they can't see the laserjet? Do I need to change some settings in the modem to allow the wireless laptops to see the wired Laserjet? like I said, as long as everything is connected with ethernet cable I have no problems. The printer is always connected to the 2wire modem router.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

I just set up a two computer wireless LAN. One machine running WinME is wired to the router, the other W2K machine is wireless about 100 feet away.

Everything works well, I can shut both machines down and restart and it all still works.

However, after shutting down the machines over night and restarting in the morning, the router won't respond. I can't access the router with IE. If I shut down both the modem and router and the machines and reboot the modem then router then the machines it'll work.

On all the other networks I've dealt with, the modems and routers are always left on.

What should I be checking here? Up till now I've never had any problems with this type of setup.

The modem is a Qwest issue Actiontec GT701 while the router is a Linksys wireless 11MB.

A:DSL modem/router connection

It would be helpful to determine if the problem is with the modem or the router.

Can you disconnect the router and connect directly to the modem.
Then leave that computer on overnight.

If there are still problems it would point to the modem.
Otherwise I would start suspecting the router.

I have an unsolvable problem with my router that results in random disconnects from Xbox Live. I want the 360 to bypass my router by plugging it directly into my modem. Is the correct solution to buy an ethernet network switch hub, plug this into the modem and then plug the router and 360 into the hub? Can anyone please advise what I should be using?

Thanks in advance.

A:Modem Connection to 360 and router

no that's not correct. you must use modem--router--otherstuff unless
you want to ONLY use modem--one.box

For work I was given a modem, which they wanted me to hook up directly to my home internet. However, I live in a town home and do not have direct access to it. Instead I have to use a port that I have in my wall. When I plug my modem into the wall the VPN does not light on the modem, which I assume is because I have blocked access as we need to register all our devices using the MAC address. The modem I have is a Cisco 881. Is there any way to find the MAC address if not listed on the device itself?
