Installation CD unable to find hard drive ??

Q: Installation CD unable to find hard drive ??

Hi guys

After few issues with Vista, I decided to install XP from boot CD. I got error message of "could not find hard drive"

I completely wiped off hard drive with all data and whilst running XP installation CD, I am STILL getting error message which says "could not find hard drive"

Can someone help?

Do I need to make any changes in BIOS?

Right now my laptop is without any operating system.

Preferred Solution: Installation CD unable to find hard drive ??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi -

Re-format the HDD with KillDisk then try XP or Vista install again. Which do you want?

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

KillDisk will find some areas on the HDD that "regular" formatting does not.

Hi there was wondering if anyone could help me.

I bought a new custom PC from ebay, a shop called FreshTech Solutions, so when it arrived I tried installing Windows 7 Home Premium (came with it). Obviously I need to do a custom install, as I'm not upgrading from anything, but when I get to the screen where it asks where I would like to install Windows 7, nothing is listed. I've tried loading from the disc that came with the motherboard, the Windows 7 CD itself, even the C drive (said it needed to format it, but couldn't).

I don't really know much about custom computers so was wondering if anyone could help me?

I have this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140816631147?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_6177wt_1186

The motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77-DS3H.

Thanks in advance

A:Windows 7 Installation Help - cannot find hard drive

Hi and welcome to Bleeping computer.

Please go to the BIOS and see if the hard drive is detected if not please follow the below instructions. In order to go to the BIOS press F2 or del key during startup.

Sometime not often components can get loose during shipping, Make sure the Hard drive is physically in the connector Data and Power.

If you have a anti-static wrist strap please put it on if you don't make sure you are grounded.

1. Open the case
1b. Make sure that your grounded first by touching the chasis or the metal on the power supply
1c. check the connections to the hard drive.

and than try again with the install.

Hi guys, i'm hoping someone can help.
I've recently bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite pro L650 running Windows 7
After a few weeks, things started to get really slow. Then I woke up one morning to discover it stuck on the first screen when I turn it on.
I thought I had a virus, so then decided to do a full re-format and re-install windows. After I formatted the correct partition, I went to install Windows 7 again
Only for it to say "windows could not detect a disc drive"
it asks me to install drivers for the hard-drive, which I can't seem to find.
it's a sata hard-drive (TOSHIBA MK6465GSX) I think is the model number.
I can not find the hard-drive drivers anywhere.

The other strange thing, is every now and then, it finds the hard-drive, but states that windows can not install onto that drive (even when I format it, try to add a partition and so forth)

I have been into bios, I don't really know a great deal of what I am looking at, but it sometimes states my hard-drive is there, and other times it does not.
I am so desperate to get this fixed. Does anyone have any ideas?
I live pretty remotely so taking it back and getting it fixed is not ideal.. but maybe necessary.
Thanks in anticipation..

- Gavin.

It sounds like a hard drive problem. Try this switch of the laptop and remove the battery then remove the hard drive, then replace hard drive battery and switch on your laptop.

Hi all, I joined the forum because I?ve been going around in circles trying to fix my computer. Apologies for huge first post. The post by "aristotletalks" about 3/4 down page 1 of this thread sums up most of the pages I've read and things I've attempted: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...3457b4a?page=1

I?m running:
Windows 8.1
Toshiba Satellite C55A-5300 (pre-installed Win 8 - no install DVD)
Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz
12 GB RAM
500 GB HDD

I?ll try to be succinct: I can?t boot my machine except with the Recovery USB I created from MS website, and when I do that I can?t get to System Restore points or Refresh because the ?hard disk where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock and try again.? I?ve spent about 12 hours the last couple days on all kinds of forums reading about this and think I?m just going in circles at this point. I?d really like to recover the data off the drive because my backup HD also just failed this week. I?ve tried:

EasyRE software (https://neosmart.net/EasyRE/) ? it says none of the drives are active or mountable

I ran chkdsk and it was estimating it?d take 60+ days to complete!? (I stopped it). C: was showing up fine.

I?ve run various diskpart commands and have been able to see the hard disk and that it?s ?Healthy?, so it looks like the drive is noticed, but it is not "active". When I tried selecting it and setting to "active" the message showed that "disk is not a fixed MBR disk".

Ok so i had to replace my hard drive this week, so i bought a WD IDE 320gb hd. While trying to reinstall Windows xp i have hit every possible issue that i could think of. I tried to do it with the jumpers out(like i seen suggested on these forums). Its currerntly connected to the end of the IDE cable as well. It does show up in the bios as well. Any suggestions?

A:unable to find hard drive while installing XP

Hi syr1dad and welcome to TSF !

Make sure the IDE cable is connected to the primary IDE controller (refer to the motherboard's manual), set the jumper as master (look on the sticker that's on the back of the drive) and hook the hard drive to the end of the cable. Hook the CD-rom drive to the middle of the cable and if it also has a jumper set it as slave. Unhook all your other IDE drives for the time of the installation.

Make sure you're using an 80 wires IDE cable. Read this for more information.

What CD are you using to reinstall ? Is it a retail XP CD ? If it doesn't have SP2 on it then create a new XP SP2 CD.

What's the exact model of your drive (look on the sticker) and what's your motherboard's brand and model ?

Recently my system was struck with a missing mgr for my operating system. This has not been the first time I have been struck with this problem since I built my pc in 2012. I have resolved the problem about 4 times before. This time around though, my primary hard drive is not appearing on any means of detection that I know of. I have removed the SSD and placed it in a usb dock for my laptop to detect it and it could not be found in the laptop. I checked in my uefi bios on my main computer (which is the computer having the overall problem) and it could not be found there. I have used a windows recovery disk and installation disk and i am still unable to find it there. I have also used the bootable partition manager and it failed to work because it claims that it does not support windows server which I dont recall running. In the worst case scenario i would probably wind up replacing it, but i would like to know if there are any other means of solutions to format the drive being that it is clearly corrupt, if not, i would like to know what is causing these missing mgr errors on my pc.

Hi guys, I have a problem. My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.). The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos).

I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important. Please help me if you can. Thanks.

P.S. Both my laptop and my PC are Vista. If I need to provide any other info please ask. Thanks again. My personal email is smarty_j_shields AT yahoo.co.uk

I have a customer's Satellite L305D S5895 laptop. This was shipped to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install. He said he tried all installation CDs he had and finally gave up on it and shipped it to me.

When I got it the partition were deleted so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do doing a custom install I get an error saying the hard drive can't be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives were found.

I reset the bios to default and no matter what I do it won't format or find the harddrive. I was going to upgrade the bios but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is after windows is installed. There is no way to make changes to the bios for settings that would have to do with the hard drive. This has a Toshiba MK2546GSX (S1) hard drive.

When installing Win 7 I get the normal windows, "windows is starting", "Select Language", "Select System", "Type of install", "Custom Install", "Delete partitions", "New Partitions", "Format", then the error message "Windows cannot format a partition on disk 0. Error: 0x80070057"

This happens regardless what system I try to install. I've tried two different versions of XP, one of Vista and 3 Win 7 and each time a different install CD.

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

Hello all,

Here is my problem. I have mainboard Asus P3b-F with 500mhz Intel proc. Because computer is planed for routing I use adapter IDE_to_Compact Flash, and CF 256MB card. I must mention that CF is working on every other comp (even on P1).
On this computer in BIOS it physically sees Card (when I switch from auto to Manualy configure). Also other test programs from BootCD does see CF card as a regular 256 disk.
Every time I start computer if BIOS is switched to Auto find ( no matter if it is on Ide1 or Ide2) comp cant find CF card ( Detecting Primary Master - None .. etc). If it is switched to manualy it cant boot system from it (cant find system).
Other "regular" Hard disks are working on this comp, and as I said this CF is working on other comps.
Does somebody know how to solve this problem.
I have 128mb SDRAM PC133 ( motherboard supports PC100 memory), but it still works with regular hrad disk.

Thanx in andvance

Hi
In such an case I would forgo the cf stuff and just use an old smaller ide drive. Cf may not live long as an os drive anyway, due to the nature of flash ram.

Hello All

My SONY VAIO VPCEB15FX laptop has been getting the S.M.A.R.T failures. I checked with SONY and since my laptop is more than 12 months old - could not get them to help me with this issue without paying (laptop started having issues exactly after 15 months- not so good for a branded laptop). So i thought i will try to handle this myself, created the recovery discs, repair disk and backed up all the data in 15 DVDs. I bought a WD Scorpio Blue hard drive (WD5000BPVT - Advanced Format Drive) and replaced the same in my laptop and started off with the recovery discs. I chose to restore complete system and it proceeded. Once it completed the process - the system restarted and the OS Setup began - now comes the issue. When the setup started it throws this error "Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's Hardware"

I ordered the SONY recovery discs - repeated the above RESTORE process - but still facing the same error

I have the problem of "setup did not find any hard disk drives". I have a Dell Precision 690 with Intel Xeon dual core processors. The IDE ATA Controller is Intel 631xESB SATA. The hard drive has 700 GB.

64-bit Windows does not have drivers for some of the most important software I use, so I wish to be able to do dual-booting on this computer. I bought a 200 GB Maxtor drive and installed it. When I tried to boot with a Windows XP CD in the drive, I got the famous message "setup did not find any hard disk drives ?". I have tried all the options discussed in this forum with no luck. In particular:
1. I used nlite to slipstream the SATA drivers which I downloaded from the Intel website. I downloaded both the 32-bit (f6flpy32.exe) and the 64-bit (f6flpy64.exe) drivers. I created the WinXP CD and booted from it. Every time I get the message "iastor.sys is corrupted" and the booting was aborted. I tried all combinations of slipstreamed CDs (Win 2000, XP SP4, etc) but with no luck. Note that I also copied the driver files from the C drive of the x64 installation and got the same problem.
2. I then tried the floppy diskette idea. I saved the driver files in a floppy and during booting I hit F6 and tried loading the drivers (one at a time and in combination). I got the same error message. Sometimes I got the message that the drivers I am trying to install were newer than the ones in the CD. I tried both accepting and rejecting the use of th... Read more

One evening I attempted to install windows 8. After the installation it repeatedly booted back into the windows installation. After removing the install disk, it booted into windows 7 normally. I decided to install a clean copy of windows 7 and that's when the problem appeared. The windows insall will not allow me access to ANY hard drive shown. Says unable to find windows partition or something like that. I've tried reformatting all the drives and same message always comes up. I cannot re-install Windows 7?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Unable to access Hard Drives in Windows 7 installation

It MIGHT be because Windows 8 installed as a GPT Partition...

But, Windows 7 and Vista can only see a GPT Partition as a non-booting data drive, unless using an UEFI BIOS.

Which MIGHT be why your Windows installation 'cannot see' an INSTALLABLE drive.

I would suggest Booting from a LINUX Bootable CD or USB Stick and reformat the Hard Drive to MBR,
i.e. delete the partition and recreate it as MBR and format to NTFS

Then reinstall Windows 7...

Hope this was helpful

Ok Im confused.
Please clarify a thing or two.

According to the site it comes with XP.
Did it?

In your post you state that you are trying to put SP2 on it.
Is this a XP disk that has SP2 built into it?
If it is and you already have XP running you wont need that.

Please clarify and we will get you sorted out.

Hi, it'd be great if anyone had ideas...

I have got a windows 95 laptop - however, recently I formatted the hard drive to get rid of all the things slowing it down and it also deleted the CD driver!

I have managed to get a very limited version of DOS running from a windows NT boot disk, and i have tried various things such as editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat files and putting another line into them, and also installing a CD driver designed for that very model of drive (Toshiba XM-1402B). unfortunately I have not had any luck so far. It did say 'unable to find CD Drive' but it is not hardware related because I used it when it was a windows computer and I have not changed the CD settings since then.

I am assuming it must be possible to start from scratch and install this driver ready for setting up win95 but I have been unable to find a way so far.

Thanks in advance!

When I do this it launches the exe but fails to locate a required dll (amw_run.dll) which is in the C:\amdll directory. The error message is Title: "Fatal error!" messageboxtext: "Unable to load application DLL: 'amw_run.dll". I have added this C:\amdll directory which the dll sits in to the PATH variable, but still no joy.

Some other notes\checks already made:
It is not a DLL that requires registering (i.e. with regsvr32).
When running this configuration from a 32bit XP machine it works fine.
When I run it from a 64bit W8 machine it fails to find the dll (as mentioned)
If I copy the runtime directory off the G:\ drive and onto the C:\ drive of the same 64bit W8 machine it runs fine!! The contents of the G:\ and C:\ runtime directories are otherwise identical.

I would like to retain this as a network app such that all users can access it from this location without having to install numerous local copies and update all these local copies whenever the program requires updating...

Anyone hazzard a guess as to what's going on and how I might get around\fix the issue - I'm completely baffled!

Many Thanks...

Well, I've been having this problem for a while, but now it's getting a bit out of hand. When I go to stand-by and get out of stand-by, it says 'Unable to read/write from drive C:' and other times (just regular surfing, playing CS, etc) the HD locks up for about 10 secs. It also does a thing I'd like to call "HD-turns-off-then-turns-back-on-again-with-a-grinding-sound".

I've tried reformatting which had some '...trying to recover' errors. And I've tried ScanDisk on thorough A LOT of times and it came up with some bad sectors on some of the scans. I've also tried Western Digital's disk drive utils. but it has some weird error now saying the IDE isnt plugged in correctly, but it is.

Specs:
Win98
40GB Western Digital HD
[ I won't say all the other specs. I don't want to intimidate other people ^_^; ]

A:Hard Drive acting weird. Unable to read/write on drive C:, and other errors

Hi trunten

A grinding sound with a hard drive and many bad sectors is not good. It sounds like your drive has bit the dust. Since it is 40 gig there is a good chance that it is still under a warranty as most hard drives come with at least a 1 year warranty and many have a three year warranty. You could recheck the drives jumpers (master/slave) and reseat the data cable but I don't think that will help. BOL

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)

I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.

The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.

How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

If there is no easy way then how do I stop program updates for Adobe etc. failing because they can not find the F drive. I don't know why they look at that drive anyway.

Help.

A:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Hi PAMDILL,

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download drivecleanup.zip V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.

I need help buying a new hard drive. All I need to know is what kind of HD my PC takes.
I plan to look inside the case in a bit. Is there any way I can tell by looking? What do you think I'll need? Thanks.

I have a hard drive failure on my computer.  I know it is a 500gb 5400rpm.  What I dont know is if it is a sata drive or not. Any help would be appreciated it. I did a system test and got the following failure id on the Hard Drive Short DST Check. Failure ID: 0K6CGF-7JK8GX-XD7WLJ-60U203 Product# CND51076HJProduct Name- 15-r052nr

A:Need to find out which hard drive to get

>  I know it is a 500gb 5400rpm.  What I dont know is if it is a SATA drive or not. Disk-drives using the "old" interface (Parallel ATA) had a maximum capacity of 500 GB, but that was a long time ago.Given that your computer is running Windows 8, it came with a SATA drive.Look for a 7200 RPM disk-drive, instead of a 5400 RPM disk-drive.Or, if you don't use all 500 GB, think about buying a 240 GB SSD ("solid-state-disk"), for much faster I/O. Example: $80 US for: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ultra-ii-240gb-internal-sata-solid-state-drive-for-laptops-black...

Perhaps you could explain precisely WHY you might want to wipe your hard-drive, especially if you cannot (apparently) reinstall the Operating System? For a discussion about how to find out what files are on your hard drive, this thread seems important:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/221865/how-to-find-out/Regards,John

My PC locks up on boot. When starting, It says cannot find bootable drive or harddrive has failed. If I get into the bios and set the defaults and save and let it run, it will boot into Windows. However this happens every boot and it is really annoying. I have also seen where you want to do something and it may say drive is locked. This is a new harddrive  (1)TB to replace the old drive that was doing the same thing. I have also updated the BIOS to the latest with no issues. however I can't fix this. Hope someone has a solution. Thanks -Peter

Hello everyone,

just now I tried to boot my pc when he "told" me he couldn't find the requested boot device. I checked my BIOS settings: the hard drive was selected as my primary boot device, as normal. When I had a look at the "devices" tab, I saw a list of the available SATA's. SATA 2 was my CD-ROM drive but SATA 1 wasn't recognized.

In short: my BIOS settings don't seem to be wrong but the computer just can't find the hard disk. I haven't made any hardware changes recently.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

Greetings

Does your computer recognize the hard drive in the popup boot menu? Usually F11 or F12 during POST.

I have a Compaq Presario S4020WM and 40 Gigs is no longer enough for me, after 4 years. I'm wanting something bigger. Compaq said it must be 5400, but I think the computer may accept 7200 RPM. They also recommend 120 GB, but I think I can have more than that. Can I? I looked at WalMart and Newegg, but can not decide on one. I'm planning to be a DJ for a radio station, so I need at least 100 Gigs, but I would like to have 200 Gigs or more. I just want to make sure I get a hard drive that will work for my computer.

Plus, do I need to increase the wattage of the power supply? The limit is 200W, so I am not sure.

Thanks.

Thunder

A:Help me find a hard drive, please.

I have never had any problems replacing 5400 RPM drives with 7200 RPM driver. They are just a little bit faster. I had a 5 year old HP with 866MHz processor and 40GB IDE HD. I bought a 7200 RPM, 300 GB, 16 MB cache HD and put it in there just fine. Windows read the entire 300GB on one partition. I don't see why a big 7200 RPM IDE drive wouldn't work for you either. HD space is actually quite cheap now days, you should be able to find the storage space you're looking for at around $100. Here are my 2 personal favorite sites to shop PC parts, because of the nice price comparison:

http://www.newegg.com

I think you need an IDE drive (or EIDE), not SATA (Serial ATA)

I think this is your computer:

This is a query about a NEC Versa Note laptop. It is 4 years old with lots of use and runs Windows 2000 and Linux. Recently got a message that it could not find its hard drive. The drive was replaced and it worked for a week or two and then the same
message. This time the hard drive was taken out and checked on another machine and the drive was fine.

The question is what is the likely cause of this problem and how should I remedy it?

I have installed a third hard drive. It is a WD160GB internal hard drive on an Adaptec Ultra ATA 1233 Card. It does not show up in “My Computer” or “Computer Management”. It does however show up in “Device Manager” as WDC WD16 00JB-00GVAO SCSI DISK DEVICE.
If I relocate the drive or card to a different location (I have 3 spare PCI slots) “found new hardware” will come up and I can access the drive until I reboot, then it goes away again.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I am trying to setup Windows XP on a Gateway Notebook MT6840.
After pressing Enter to start with Windoes setup, it gives the message :
"Set up did not find any hard drives installed in your computer".

This computer has Windows Vista pre-installed. I defined a new partition there, and that is where I want to install XP. Also , it has a SATA driver.
It only has CD Drive, no floppy Drive.

I know that during the setup, and before getting the message , you can press F6 to load SCSI/RAID controllers, i do not know if I have to press it, and then F2 for recovery. However, this computer only has CD Drive, no floppy Drive.

Any suggestion to fix this problem?

Thanks

Luis
