Explorer freezes

Q: Explorer freezes

Hi,

Could anyone please help me with this reoccuring issue. Everytime I connect to the internet through my ISP and click on internet explorer, it freezes up either immediately, or it will run for a while and then freeze. I can only connect through AOL and then run internet explorer continuously without any problems. I currently have nunet as my isp along with aol. I thought the problem was nunet so I signed up with netzero and I am having the same problem. I have ran multiple antivirus and spyware programs including: spybot, avg, norton's, adaware, advanced windows care, and hijack this. All problems have been fixed according to them. Also all my updates have been performed. I am using service pack 2. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Tnank you for your support!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Hi to everybody. I have read tons of forums about this issue and I tried to do what advised, but I couldn't solve this issu with my PC.
I upgraded my system 1 month ago, but I didn't achieve a stable configuration. New componets are MB, CPU, RAM and SSHD. I have suspects on PSU even nominal power should be ok.

---PC Configuration:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4770K
Asus Z87-K
KHX2133C11D3K4/16GX Kingston HyperX (4x4GB) Memory
Ati Radeon HD5850
Crucial MX100 2.5" 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive
PSU Modular Power Supply ATX 700W
keyboard logithech usb wireless
mouse advent wireless
---Symptoms:

Immediately after the boot, the graphic card fan starts increasing speed and then the system freezes. If I disable and re-enable the graphic card, fan stops overunning immediately and run normally; the system freezes later, randomly.
After 3-4 hard resets, the system asks me to restore the system. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

After downgrading the graphic drivers, the system appeared stable for some days. But now it started again freezing in a different way: rather than increasing the card's fan speed, the graphic card starts flickering. It stops if I disable and re-enable the graphic card, but it starts again after few minutes and the system freezes.

Freezing mechanism: explorer stops responding, but the mouse pointer is still working. After 20-30 seconds mouse freezes as well. It happens randomly in idle state, using google chrome or ... Read more

A:Windows 7 64 bit freezes after few minutes. Explorer hangs and then freezes.

Unless the new hardware you fitted is almost identical to the old, which I doubt, you should do a clean install of Windows. The main reason is the drivers from the old stuff are still around and are messing things up.

So after I finally got my laptop working again my desktop (dell e310) started acting weird.

There are 4 user accounts and all the accounts seem to freeze at startup. I mean the icons next to the clock (task tray or whatever), only a few load and show up and it seems they click IE or anything and itll than immediately freeze. But its odd in that JUST the Start button, any tabs there successfully opened, and the clock icons freeze. Desktop wise you can click the icons however they dont open.

But then again, on my account I can click my computer and such and itll just have a flashlight looking for the folder. Odd. My clock icons dont all load either. If I X out of the my computer itll then proceed to freeze.

Although going into safe mode there is no lag or freezing.

My thoughts are and Ive done a lot with computers so Im pretty computer literate is that either there is a virus, or a possible drive failure. Not sure though.

Any thoughts? And no I dont have AV on that computer as I didnt think they were visiting areas that were malicious.

Any opinions would be helpful.

Thanks.

I have a school laptop that runs XP Pro SP3. I don't remember exactly what caused it, I think I was going to uninstall an old version of Visual Basic or something, but it is completely unusable right now. It takes about 3 minutes just to get past "Loading personal settings...", and when it does, it takes another 5 minutes just to get explorer running. Any time I open a program, open the start menu, or do ANYthing that uses explorer, explorer.exe completely freezes. I'm still able to work if I have the window open already, but until explorer unfreezes I cannot open/close anything else. It takes roughly 5 minutes to unfreeze.

Safe mode works okay. I do not have any startup items set. I've tried fixing the registry with CCleaner, Advanced System Care Pro, RegCure, and RegCleaner but still cannot fix it. I've also tried creating a new user profile and deleting the other one, but that doesn't work either. I also tried scanning it with Malwarebytes, but found nothing.

I would reformat the thing, but it's a school laptop and I don't have the original Windows disk. Also I'd lose the security software they have installed on there, so that's really not an option.

Anyone have ideas?

A new issue has arisen.

I walked away from my computer for a while. When I got back, Chrome had frozen up, and it was so bad I couldn't even get Task Manager opened nor explorer responding in general. The other couple of windows I had open were still able to respond and close properly, mouse and keyboard were working, but Explorer was just done. It didn't even show the tabs disappear as the windows closed.

I've already run both the windows Chkdsk and Western Digital diagnostic on my drives, they came up clean. Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D and my Avast! antivirus, THEY all came up clean. I've also run system-file-checker, sfc /scannow, and got that fixed.

Hi - very strange and very ongoing problem here.

Windows XP SP2 - I've uninstalled everything I can. Searched for Viruses, Trojans etc..

The basic problem is that the computer freezes.
The CPU usage doesn't spike it just freezes and then starts again.
When I shut down I often get an Exporer.exe error.

I've been working on this for a week. I don't want to reformat unless I have to.

What is this service, I can find no useful information on it and it looks suspicious:

O23 - Service: System Event Trap (Evttrp) - Cat Soft - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kernell.exe

If you did not install it and cannot vouch for it, I would recommend removing it.

To do this go to start > run cmd and at the prompt enter:

sc delete Evttrp

and reboot.

Alternately you can just disable the service by running services.msc and finding

"System Event Trap" and double click and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

If you are sure that service is not involved in the problem you should be looking into overheating as a possible issue.

Blow out any dust from the computer and ensure the fan is working.

A:MS Internet Explorer freezes often

Besides my dislike of IE for similar reasons, there are things you can do. Clean out your history and temp internet file. You can go into Internet-->options in control panel and do this manually and set them to be deleted every day or so. I use a program called Window washer to clear everything once a day. It does a great job-made by Webroot. Spyware has recently surged tremendously. Download some free spyware removal tools such as SpyBot, Ad-aware--they do a reasonable job. I tried PCTOOLs Spyware Doctor which is top rated. However, I just changed to Stopzilla as it found a lot of stuff that the Doctor missed. That's kind of the way it is dealing with spyware crap. There are also some Tune Up utilities you can get that will help. Another big one to check is your registry. Most people like Registry Mechanic and I use it myself. You can hunt around and find some free ones I imagine but I've been happy with reg Mechanic. When all else fails, just forget IE and download Firefox--it's free-and it works A LOT better. It opens faster, changes pages faster and you can import all your IE favorites. Anyway, hope some of this helps. I FEEL your pain!!

A:Explorer freezes at random

Hi every one...
I m new in this forum. When listening to radio on the net for any length of time, you are bound to get a few "drop outs" this is due to network congestion or broken links along the way. The "buffer" that is built in, that is, if you leave things in their default settings, should automatically adjust to the best quality for the bandwidth available. In any case if you are finding that you are getting a lot of drop outs, it may be because you have a number of processes working in the background, due to in most part, by spyware that gets in.
Thank u

I'm a technician at a student helpdesk at a small university. I've been working on this one, and for the first time, I'm stumped right off the bat...

A student brought her laptop up saying that after running for awhile, the computer will freeze and need to be shut down by holding the power button. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. So I fired it up and pretty quickly found a corrupt (and expired) Norton installation. I wrestled with that a bit, then disabled everything but drivers in msconfig. Already it was running 200% better. I then pulled the hard drive out and plugged it into an external bay in a computer we use for virus scans. I scanned it with avast, trend micro, malwarebytes, and a2. All of them came up clean. So I put the had drive back, and not having seen any lockups, I decided it was a job well done and proceed to start windows update. After some time I noticed the download had stopped at 92%. I moved the cursor to make sure it wasn't locked up. The cursor moved, so I just blamed an internet hiccup and moved on. Later, I realized that explorer seemed to be frozen and all I could do was hold the power button. The cursor moved, the progress bar was still glowing, but everything was totally unresponsive. Today, after leaving the laptop running for a period of time, no programs running, it did the same thing. Everything looked normal until I moved the cursor over the taskbar. No response and the cursor changed to the loading circle. What's worse, she doesn't want us to rein... Read more

Hi. I have a Dell M70 Laptop with Windows XP pro sp2. Whenever I startup my computer:The taskbar freezes for about 30-40 seconds

After the sygate icon loads, everything works fine.
I can start programs via icons and even access the context menu by right clicking, but when I put my cursor over the start button, system tray, or quick launch toolbar I get the hourglass symbol.
I think the problem is with the sygate firewall. I have tried reinstalling sygate firewall, sfc /scannow, a repair install, and I downloaded shellexview. I think shellexview may help me, but I'm not sure what to disable and what not to disable. There are no references to Sygate in any of the shell extensions. Can anyone help? Thanks.

you upgrade to xp pro from what? Do you have the same problem with other browsers? If you have not tried another browser, give another a try to see if its an ie problem or something else.

Everything was working great until I loaded Acrobat 8 Pro. I uninstalled the program but the problem will not go away. I even tried reinstalling and uninstalling a few times.

Now here is the problem:

When I start my PC up it all loads ok to the blue Welcome screen with the Windows Icon in the center. Then the screen goes blank and it pops up My Documents folder and that is all. No taskbar or sound or anything. I then have to push 'ctrl' 'alt' 'del' bring up taskmanager and Start new task> explorer. Then it loads normally. explorer will be listed on the taskmanager as running, but on using between 1kb and 4kb not the normal amount.

Once I do this everything is alright but I need form my computer to start normally. Any ideas? I am running Vista Ultimate

Hello, for a few weeks now I've had a problem that when certain disks (not all of them) are put into my DVD drive, explorer.exe will close (I will not be able to use my deskbar) and even if I try to open programs they will not open. Through the task manager I am still able to open programs by starting new tasks, but otherwise my computer is inoperable until I take the disk out and force reboot. This wasn't as much of a problem for me (I'm not a regular user of disks) until I got my Windows 7 in the Mail today. The upgrade DVD caused this problem.

As for my specs:

I'm running Vista home premium with service pack 2. It's a prebuilt acer brand computer, and is otherwise in great condition. Nothing substantial happened around when the problem started.

I only have one drive, but listed in my device manager is the following:

ATAPI DVD A DH16A6S ATA Device
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI CdRom Device

Any help would be very much appreciated!

EDIT: I just tried again, this time my computer got the error:

IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL

http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/...d-p1040184.jpg

and it's happened before. I tried all of the on-screen advice there.

Whenever I open windows explorer, explorer freezes and locks-up my computer. Is there a common cause to this problem and some popular suggestions to fix this? I have windows XP.

Thanks.

A:windows explorer freezes

Could be just about anything. malware, driver issues, etc...

Check Event Viewer for some initial hints. Look for chronic and/or significant errors (not warnings or "information") in "system" and "application".

What is your AV software, and are the definition files updated ?

Check Device Manager, click "show hidden devices" and report any flags.

Hi Folks

Forgive me if this is not the correct thread to post my query & would be grateful if you can let me know where to post it to, but my problem is -

Yesterday my kids were looking on the internet on my lap top. I don't know what they did to it, but when I turned it on this morning, it does not seem to be working. I do get up to the desk top screen and then it seems to freeze no matter what I try to access - the internet or other Word applications. I presume the kids turned the lap top off yesterday without logging out in the correct way or not exiting from a website in the usual way.

Anyway, I then went into 'safe mode' and applications such as Word & Excel are working. However, the lap top freezes when I click on the internet explorer icon to go on the internet.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi you all, I've been re-directed from highjackthis log forum because after one of the group moderators examine my log and didn't find any malware or any trojan horses infections in my pc, he thinks it maybe something to do with a driver issue, here is my problem;
When ever I open windows and if I have to open any document be it my pictures or my documents and if I right click on it I get this message saying windows explorer has encounter a problem and it needs to close, then I get a Dr. Watson postmortem debugger saying it has encounter a problem and it needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience, after that my pc freezes up and nothing works I would have to click Ctrl>Alt>delete, bring up task manager and do a restart from there and after a long wile it would work, again I thought it had something to do with some sort of virus or something related but I have scan my pc with antivirus, malware, spyware, spybot, rogue remover and highjackthis programs and nothing has come up yet, so this is why I've been re-directed to this forum.

If you have any ideas please help!

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

I have a very frustrating problem with the explorer. I am surfing and then when I'm closing one of the Tabs or If I'm closing the browser completely, it just freezes.

I took some pictures that you can see the problem clearly:

(Don't mind the site him self, I did that)

2. http://lidor.net/images/2.jpg

2) on that picture you can see that I can move the explorer even though I can not do anything else.

3) on this last picture you can see what happens when I click on the X to close the browser.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really anoying problem with my fresh install of windows XP

At first everything worked fine. I updated thru windows update and even installed anti virus and spyware software like ad-aware 2007, avg free, sophos anti rootkit, spybot s&d, hijackthis and such.

Scans give me no problems at all accept for some cookies and MRU files

The problem:

Whenever i try to open for instance c:\ thru 'my computer' explorer freezes. Internet explorer freezes aswell.

I can terminate the explorer proces with task manager, it seems to shut down but doesn't restart. After opening the TaksManager it still shows explorer.exe as a running proces..

Also when i try to shutdown or restart the computer thru start it doesn't do a thing.

Going back to a previous restore point doesn't fix the problem.

I've browsed the bc forum but haven't found a solution to this problem so far. My guess is that it might have something to do with a service.msc that isn't enabled or should be disabled?!

I would really apreciate your help!
[/edit]
Oh yeah, and i don't get any error messages :s

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes. To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.Check in all three categories (Application, Security, and System). If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem. How To Use the Event Viewer

This one has me stumped...
On rebooting, explorer freezes after the desktop is up but before the taskbar completely loads. It will sit there indefinitely or until I ctrl-alt-del and kill explorer.exe. When I restart explorer, it operates fine, but only a few of my startup programs are running. I thought I had fixed this a few weeks ago when a scan detected a piece of malware... After that, the computer rebooted fine until today. Now the problem has recurred. Any ideas?

Welcome to TSG....

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

OK, here is the issue. If I right-click on the start button and go to "Explore", the window pops up without a problem. But then as I navigate through the folders, it eventually freezes up once I click on a folder that contains files. So if I go to Username/Pictures/Our_Son it will freeze up rather than showing the pictures of our son.

Also if I click Start, go to Documents, or something else there, it freezes up immediately.

Besides all that, the computer has started running SLOW! Takes a while to open files.

I started noticing problems yesterday. Ran a virus scan with Webroot software and found nothing of significance. Installed and ran Spyware Doctor from PC Tools and found quite a bit of viral problems. However, nothing has fixed this problem.

(BTW, anyone know a good, virus free place to download torrents?)

Thanks,

Troy

I have been having trouble of Windows randomly freezing sometimes on my desktop(first listed in specs). I figured it wasn't serious as it happen every now and then. Now, as of 2 days, it freezes every time I login. It freezes in a unique way: hard drive light goes solid but you can still click on some things or move the mouse before it will actually completely freeze. I have tried safemode which it still does the same thing unless I choose start with command prompt. So, I figure it must be explorer freezing it because it will freeze instantly if I start it using task manager. I have disabled many context menus, start up programs, and other various things to try to fix the issue. I am also having another issue when I click on the explorer shortcut in the taskbar it will say it is not associated. I have tried the exe association repairs and the registry fix from Microsoft, neither fixed the issue. I am not sure if the two are connected, that is why I mentioned it.

Any ideas what is causing the issue?

Thanks!
