Portege R600-11B - Screen is very faint

Q: Portege R600-11B - Screen is very faint

The screen on my Portege R600-11B has suddenly gone extremely dim. There's no problem with it coming back to life after hibernation - but it still coems back extremely dim. The brightness does flash up when I press the button at the top right hand corner with a sun symbol on.

I think I might need an FL Invertor? Do you know how I find out which one I need and instructions on how to fit it?

Also I've had problems with Windows 7 Professional starting up incredibly slowly. I'm assuming the two problems are not related.

Hope you can help, thanks.

Preferred Solution: Portege R600-11B - Screen is very faint

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recommend connecting an external monitor.
If the picture on the external monitor would be fine, then your internal display or maybe the FL inverter needs to be replaced.
You ask how to check this?
Well, I?m afraid each part need to be checked using another good tested part.

In your case I would ask an specialist for assistance?
Is warranty valid? If yes then I would recommend to contact an Toshiba service in your country.

Good Afternoon,

My Toshiba model is ?porteg? R600-13x?, I usually work with it without any password. Everytime I open it, it shows me the message of the Finger Print utility and I push ?cancel?. I don?t remember what I did different this morning, but now it?s asking me for a password, and I don?t know what to insert? Can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance.

A:Re: OS locked on my Portege R600-13X

Can you continue to work with your notebook if you don?t enter the password?
Generally speaking some password cannot be set for no reason and from alone.

Have you maybe played with fingerprint settings? When you set fingerprint for login it is also secured with password that can be used if the fingerprint cannot be scanned correctly.

I have a R600 10Q and am interested in putting an SSD in to replace the aging/slow HDD have had a look at what other people have been saying and there appears to be some compatibility problems.

Does any one know if these have been fixed with the new BIOS updates? or is there a list of compatible drives?
Has any one had any success with any particular model?

thanks for the help

A:Portege R600 - SSD upgrade question

Most of today's 3rd generation SSD's should work fine. Many of the bugs that affected the earlier SSD's have been resolved now.

Ensure you update the firmware on the SSD before installing Windows. Updating the R600 BIOS is also a good idea. Personally I would buy an Intel or OCZ SSD (the later models).

The Toshiba Port?g? R600 is an older laptop that's official supported by Toshiba for Windows Vista, XP (downgrade) and Windows 7. But it appears to run Windows 10 64 bit reasonably fine. There is one quirk that I have with Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10074. It will stop booting, with the circling dots going their rounds forever. (bootlog mode will show the reason)

What you do is boot into safe mode. In device manager disabled the second entry for the graphics card. Windows will then boot normally. I hope I can get through with Microsoft to fix this silly bug.

I do not know how this will affect build upgrades in the future.

Some other maintenance things:

The thermal grease for the graphics card becomes a useless thermal insulating powder over time. This will show up as graphics corruption on the screen, short lines that will show strange colors. If you open up the laptop (tip: ice cube tray for the screws), carefully slide open and unplug the ribbon cables, there is yellow heat spreader on the backside. The pinkish white heat paste will just crumble away. At the moment I've redone it with some Coolermaster thermal grease, but I think this will give the same problem eventually. Maybe I'll get myself some K5-Pro, as that seems to be a silicone rubber that's more sticky, without being a glue. And it will appropriate to replace the ripped thermal pad on the CPU too. Though a copper shim might work there too.

A:Windows 10 on Portege R600 - my experience

A small update on the screen corruption issues. Apparently this is a known issue with the Intel GM45 chipset. Some more in-depth info in the Intel errata 10.

Solutions are:
* Run with "1 stick" of RAM, e.g. only the built-in 1GB
* Run with matching sizes, e.g. builtin 1GB + 1GB SODIMM stick for a total of 2GB.
* Disable the Intel VT-d feature in the BIOS

Since I know VT can be used for more advanced security features, I had enabled it in the BIOS. With the fixes through memory limiting, but VT still enabled, you may still encounter entire system lockups/hangs on older steppings of the GM45 chipset.

I'd say, disable VT-x/VT-d in the BIOS.

I can see the display faintly on the laptop and clearly on an external display if connected. Also, if I press the top right button (that has some sort of display symbol on it), the backlight comes on momentarily.

I have reset all the display settings to factory default and followed various advice from forums about settings in the Intel driver, but nothing makes any difference.

This leads me to conclude that there may be a problem with the backlight switch.

Anybody out there got any ideas?

If it is the switch, can I replace is myself?

Thanks (in advance!)

A:Portege R600 - Blacklight problem

Enable Hibernation and then close the Lid. Does it enter hibernation as expected?

If yes, the switch is fine. Something else is faulty.

If that model uses an FL Inverter you need to replace the Inverter. Otherwise if it's an LED backlit screen the LCD would need replacing.

I have upgraded my Port?g? R600-13X replacing HDD with SSD (Sandisk Ultra Plus / SATA 3.0)
This laptop has the Intel? GS45 Express chipset wich should support SATA 2.0, however I only can achieve transfer rate 1.5Gb/s. I have updated everything I could, including BIOS - which still doesn't show any option that would for instance enable switching between SATA modes..

Does anyone have R600 with an SSD and getting better results?
I only failed to update the chipset as the installation ends with an error and that is suggesting that there is something not quite right

A:Portege R600 - SSD performance limited by SATA 1.0

Did you check the BIOS settings for SATA mode option?

Some BIOS supports an SATA mode: AHCI and compatible.
In case you want to use the SATA performance, you have to use AHCI setting.

As far as I know the external eSATA port supports the 300MB/s and in BIOS should be set to serial ATA port4 (default).

The host interface support max 300MB/s but sustained data read would be max 100MB/s and sustained data write is max 40MB/s

This R600-S4201 is terrific. I like the weight plus the unique transflective screen that permits work in the park. I've maximized RAM to 5GB, added a superfast SSD, tailored the OS (W7), and keep the cooling system clean - all to keep this lovely ultrarportable functioning as a business machine (no games, videos, etc.) It's been excellent.

*HOWEVER:* Just recently, the screen will intermittently show a "smear" of the image. It's unpredictable, and not associated with any particular software.

I downloaded and re-installed the current video driver, carefully checked other functions, malware, etc. The problem persists.

What can I do to further diagnose the issue? I'd like to avoid motherboard replacement.

A:Portege R600: "Smeared" video -- intermittent

>What can I do to further diagnose the issue?
I think the best way to check what?s going wrong with the notebook is the usage of external monitor.
Connect the 2nd monitor to the notebook and check if the same ?smear? effect would be noticeable on the external display.

In case you will see the same blurred image on the external monitor, the problem might be related to faulty graphic card and in such case I don?t think that you will avoid the motherboard replacement.

In case the same image would appear properly on the external monitor, the problem might be related to the internal notebook display. However, in such case further investigation would be necessary.

R600-140 win 7 prof
I'm plugging in a usb video capture device, and a popup appears saying (approximately)

+this device would work better with USB 2.0 - click here for a list of usb ports+

I thought all the ports were usb 2.
I've just checked the drivers in control panel, and I am told they are all up to date.

A:Portege R600-140: message says: device would work better with USB 2.0

The notebook supports definitely the USB 2.0 ports.
I guess this message could appear due to different reasons: for example USB device malfunction.
Also the USB port problem could be responsible for such error message.

Therefore as first workaround I recommend you to remove the USB hubs and controllers from device manager list.
Open device manager, search for USB hubs and controllers and uninstall the driver.
Then reboot the notebook

Usually system will start to recognize the USB devices.

Note: during this procedure all external USB devices should be disconencted

My R600 has been on XP Pro SP3 since new, and runs very satisfactorily. However, there are Windows 7 features that I would like to use.

Has anyone here crossed over? What were the problems? Did the face recognition work? Fingerprint reader?

Above all, how is performance on Windows 7?

A:Portege R600-4201 - Does it work with Windows 7 properly?

As I can see Portege R600 is full supported for Win7 and I believe everything should work well.
Unfortunately I don?t have this notebook model but if the drivers are available and I presume all drivers, tools and utilities are tested and every of them will work well.

My screen suddenly went very dark, though I am able to faintly see the HP logo at startup. I've tried plugging it into an external monitor, yet I get nothing. I have now replaced both the backlight and the inverter, yet there is no improvement. Is it possible that I have a software or driver problem? I can see (with a flashlight on the screen), that during the startup process a screen comes up that says something about startup repair. Any ideas??

A:Pavilion G60 black/faint screen issue

When you plug into an external monitor, are you remembering the key- combination required to set to external monitor that is on your keyboard?

Laptops do not automatically enable a remote display, you must tell it its there.

Also if you have a removeable video card, the card itself may have died, but it sounds to me like the tube or inverter is either wired backwards, or not getting good power. Do you have brightness/darkness key on your keyboard? Usually looks like a circle, half is black, half is white.

A:faint lines on screen of Dell Inspiron 5160

Try plugging it into an external monitor to see if that works properly. (if you have a desktop computer, use that monitor)

A monitor should plug into most notebooks on the back or side somewhere, and you may have to do some keystroke or change a setting in the display options panel to enable that external output. But if you can get it to display on the external monitor without any trouble, that means your screen is probably bad.

I would appreciate some help with the following problem:

SYMPTOMS: Screen is black, but I can see that there is a faint image in the background.
I get a good image in external monitor.

I suspect, _among others_, that there may be a faulty *lid sensor/switch*, but I have been unable to locate it, although I have disassembled the unit.

If somebody knows, please let me have the exact *location* where I should look for the switch.
Thank you

A:Satellite Pro L40: black screen but faint image in the background

> I suspect, among others, that there may be a faulty lid sensor/switch,

No, I don?t think its sensor issue.
I assume the FL inverter is faulty.

The FL inverter controls the backlight of LCD display module.
Therefore this part should be checked and if necessary, it should be replaced.

Hello Joe, and welcome to Sevenforums

No, your graphics card speed shouldn't effect your monitor's ability to interpret it. Is it set to 60MHz?

If you could please Fill out your system specs (this tool may help you out a great deal), it would help find a fix to your problem.
You shouldn't have to install anything to fix that problem. Does this change when you lower the graphics settings? Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card (I can help you look after you enter your system specs)?
How many watts does your power supply have, and what kind is it (You could put that info into the system specs)? *EDIT [[just found you mentioned it already]]*
What is wrong with keeping v-sync and triple buffer on? Does the game not have these options?
Is any part of your computer too hot or overheating, and does it get enough airflow? Have you cleaned out all the dust recently?
Does your new card have a control panel (from the driver) that can force v-sync and triple buffering? I wouldn't use third party software as a fix to my graphical problems unless as a last resort. See if disabling them helps at all

Hello, ive been trying to get some information about R600, but internet is confusing xD
how would it be?
how much would it cost?
And ive heard that would be better than the G80, cause of the 512bits 120 GB/s rate transfer, 64 unified shaders, etc, etc....but how much expensive? xD

Greetings from Chile

A:what do you know about the incoming R600?

The X2800XTX is going to be ~$600US. It is better than the G80 with 64 Unified Shaders doing 4 ops per clock so theoretically 256 Unified Shader ops per clock cycle. It will run at 700/2400 and will have 153.6GB/s memory bandwidth. It should be about 1.5x more powerful than G80. G81 should be a little more of a competition, but the R600 should still be better than the G81 aka 8900GTX.

A:Portege Z30-B-119 - shaking screen

To be honest this is the first time that I have read about such issue… it sounds really strange because it seems that this problem does not appear always…
It’s always difficult to troubleshoot the issues especially if they don’t appear always but only sometimes…

I think first of all you should check if the same display problem would be visible on external screen (2nd external monitor, LCD TV, etc…)
If the same problem will not occur on 2nd display, then we can assume that there is something wrong with the internal display panel or maybe the connection between the internal display and the motherboard.

As you see, some more tests are necessary to get more details about possible troublemakers.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

I bought a PORTEGE (M800-107) in 2009 and before the expiration of the 3-year-old-warranty (2012), the screen went black permanently .
I sent it to the official TOSHIBA service in Greece (called "IDEAL sa") who fixed it in about a month (and after two tries).
One and a half year later, the screen went black again. Now they ask from me 500 euros for the replacement of the monitor. Of course I'm not going to give all these money.
Portege was the 3rd Toshiba notebook I have used. I chose it because I wanted something powerful and professional. The irony is that the most expensive model went off earlier than the cheaper.
However, that was the LAST ONE from you.

PS: In order to take my notebook back (without fixing), I have to pay 30 euros, for the technicians' check!!!!!!!
Really, do you know anyone who goes to service for fun? Or am I responsible for your model's failure?

A:Defective screen on Portege M800

To be honest I?m really wondering you have this display problem. Portege and Tecra models are the best Toshiba business line notebooks and since years they are known as high quality products with best hardware.

Anyway, sometimes the best products have problems and make troubles. Similar things happen with all technical products. I know it is pretty pity and angry, especially in the moment when you need your notebook.

Maybe it sounds stupid now but maybe you can buy display on your own and find someone who can exchange it for you. I have done this for my friend few years ago. We bought display on eBay and we have exchanged it alone. Of course on our own risk.

Bye and good luck

I am having trouble with a flcikering screen on a brand new Z30-c 156 (PT263E-0L903MEN) - it's about a week old.

Peridically the screen flickers, in black rectangular bloxks in a sort of matrix pattern all over the screen which renders the computer unusable.

A video of the type of flickering posted here: https://aither.box.com/s/qimp81kdwyn...gzerwtj1mzhr90

I noticed the problem very early on when starting to setup the computer for first use. I am still not sure if it's hardware or software related. I have tried a range of things to fix it with no success, which I'll describe below.

Ran Toshiba service station, and TEMPRO, updated BIOS and Value added package according to tempro, but BIOS already seemed to be up to date 5.8)
Fully updated Windows 7 via windows update so it is convinced it has all updates applied
Complete factory reset - wipe of hard drive from factory image on SSD
Ran Toshiba PC Diagnostic tool from within windows, all the hardware tests pass
Tried to uninstall all third party software that's been installed on the PC. The only software really remaining is Office 2010, which is up to date, plus chrome browser, but the flickering existed even without chrome
I am now progressively downloading various drivers directly from the Toshiba support site and reinstalling. I've now done this for the display driver (even though this is older than the one windows update had installed) and the chipset, neither of these seem to have made a difference

I have a Z30-A-1E1 model with Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.

I'm having ad issue, randomly I got a blue screen and the notebook reboots, without giving error messages.
In the windows event log I can't find anything that clearly led to a cause.

I'm using a Toshiba Dynadoc U3 and I first thougt that it had something to do with it, but the crash happens even if I'm using the notebook disconnected from it.

Does anyone had a problem like this?
Any suggestions for debugging?

Thank you very much!

A:Portege Z30-A-1E1 - blue screen and reboot

I do not have a complete solution, but perhaps a step on the way.
I would first suggest to disable automatic restart when a bluescreen appear.
That way the error message will stay on the screen until the PC is switched off.

A:How to replace screen on Portege 3500

Hey mate,

First of all I have to say that screen replacement and generally notebook disassembling is pretty complicated and tricky. You have to remove a lot of screws you have to be very careful. So it?s not easy to replace the screen.
Maybe you can find some detailed instructions if you search with Google?

And a replacement screen or number you can get from your authorized service provider. Just contact the guys and ask for that, they will help you and can exchange the screen too.

I undocked the screen from the keyboard without issue (using the "eject hardware safely" icon), but when reattaching the screen, it does not recognize the keyboard. Physical connection is 100%, but no communication at all. Usually it dings and switches from tablet mode to PC mode. Not this time. Interestingly, it DOES know that the keyboard is being charged, but only "Battery 2" is present.

Any ideas before sending it to the dreaded "Depot"?

A:Portege R835-P88 - keyboard and screen replacement

The parts for Portege R830 should be compatible with the R835 too.
Usually this is the same series but released in another region.

The display seems to be compatible with the Portege R705, R830 and R835 series.
Therefore it should be compatible with your model too.

Hi all,

We have an odd issue with one of Our Portege Z20's

When switched on you see the Toshiba Screen and then the screen just goes blank. If you tap f2 etc then you are asked for a supervisor password, and again after entering the password the screen goes blank. We have let the battery run flat and this has not solved the issue.
I have connected a external monitor and still the same thing occurs.

Any idea how we can fix this

I've got a z20t-B-107. Lovely machine, upgraded to win 10, all working fine - I had to download a new Wacom driver to get the 'left-click' to work with the pen.

I'm using it in tablet mode to digitise some data points on a map, and to sketch with the pen. However, when I rest my hand on the screen it 'activates' the touch screen and makes things go crazy. I really need to be able to temporarily switch off the touch digitiser and have only the Wacom digitiser running, and if I can toggle it on/off somehow that would be useful. Otherwise i need to use the pen in a very unnatural position to avoid touching the screen with my hand.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note which uses the Wacom type digitiser - it doesn't seem to suffer from this, as soon as it detects the pen near the screen it appear to switch off the touch part.

I would be grateful for any help - I've tried search engines but they only seem to give results about touch pads, and that's completely different...

Many thanks in advance

A:Portege Z20t - can I turn touch screen OFF?

I use a Z20t too (but with Win8.1) and have the same problem. I have decided to switch off the touch complete. It is not a good solution, but a good working with OneNote is only with switching off the touch functionality possible.
Maybe this is a possible solution for you.
In Win8.1 I switched off the driver in the device manager.

I found the following steps here:

1. Right-click and select "All Apps" at the lower right corner, then select Control Panel
2. Select Hardware and Sound
3. Select Device Manager
4. Select Human Interface Devices
5. From the list, look for the driver for the touch screen. This can be tricky since on my tablet they are all listed as "USB Input Device" and there are 3 of them. I found it by disabling and re-enabling one at a time until the touch screen stopped responding. You can also identify the touch screen by checking the Properties | Details and get the "Hardware Ids" then do a search online to see what the device is. In my case, the touch screen has the ID USB/VID_0EEF&PID_7302.
6. Once you know which is the touch screen, disable the driver and the touch screen should no longer work
Enable this device to make the touch screen work again.

I own a Portege Z20T B-10C which is a rather nice machine, but has one annoying flaw: The screen gets scratched by virtually any contact. For example, I can't use the "emergency pen" for touch input or to write on the screen as it causes scratches. Also, the screen has already collected a series of scratches shaping the outline of the touchpad, i.e. supposedly produced when closing the laptop. Hence, you can't really use the laptop the way it should be used and I fear that a few months from now the screen will be filled with scratches.

While I'm waiting for my notebook shop to decide whether this is a warranty case or not, I wonder if anyone of you owns this model and has come across the same problem?

A:Portege Z20T: Screen becomes scratched by virtually anything

I have exactly the same problem. I've only been using the machine since July and already it's quite damages. Basically the screen rubs against the dock and I have the imprint in the outline of the touchpad. I'm concerned that they will soon damaging the images captured by the camera since the outline of the touch pad is right over the lens.

Toshiba is so far unwilling to repair this and I've included the response from my account rep below. Frankly, I was shocked since this is such an expensive computer and the cause of the problem seems so obvious. I was also disappointed that they didn't consider this thread when evaluating my case since it is the first result when one Googles 'portege scratched screen'.
Hello Eric,

I sent your email with the pictures of your laptop screen scratches. They replied back saying that the scratches are not due to a manufacture defect and there have not been another reports of other Z20t touchscreens getting scratches like this on the screen, so there is nothing they can do to replace it. Our Customer Service Manager will usually just make the call to replace it, if the laptop is with the first 90 days, which is 2 ? months past the normal return policy. He was not able to get the approval to replace it.

I am glad that you were able to get this laptop back up and running. Please keep that Business Technical Support number handy for any future needs, which I hope that you do not ever have to use it in the future. Please give me ... Read more

Have you installed the latest BIOS?

If the latest BIOS doesn't help, there could be a loose connection, or the system needs an update. An ASP can do this for you.
