ThinkCentre M92p Tower & SFF: power supply upgrade options (14-pin, PSU, front fan)

Q: ThinkCentre M92p Tower & SFF: power supply upgrade options (14-pin, PSU, front fan)

There have been a few threads about the propreitary 14pin PSU connectors and that there's no aftermarket support for upgrades. But it's been a little while, and Lenovo (around the office, my staff are calling them "Le-No-No" now) hasn't change policy, or offered an upgrade.

We have just received several of these i7 PC's and they all have the useless 280w PSU's. Those are severely limiting in what video cards can be installed, as anything over 55w will knock the PSU over. That means, no decent cards. A Quadro 2000 is, at 51W, about as far as we can go.

My CDW rep has been working to find a solution for us, but without any success. So I'm bringing it to the community before I have to re-evaluate our desktop hardware choice.

Has anybody made either an adapter or a PSU that will work on the Lenovo 14-pin motherboards?

(Oh, and yes, I've read http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/M92P-14pin-power-supply-connector/m-p/84... . No help there. Thought I'd post a clear question here in hopes that someone has started making adapters.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyoneI have bought second-hand my M92P SFF (3218) and I intend to boost it a bit. Things that I want to do involve upgrading the RAM (to 16GB) and -this is where I need help- if possible, the CPU.I have seen a model of my very PC with the i7-3770 (3.4GHz). Can I simply swap the current i5-3470 for an i7-3770? Will it work or will I have issues? I mean like the BIOS not "seeing" the processor etc...Also, how much of an improvement in speed / graphics ability could I see with such a "swap".Anyone knowing an answer for sure I would wholeheartedly welcome his/her help.

Yes, upgrade to i7-3770 (the top processor for this model) is possible, and as it's the same wattage as existing i5, there are no cooler issues.  But benchmarks show less than a 20% improvement, and in my past experience, you need 35%+ to make a noticable difference.   IMO, you'd be better off changing the HDD to a SSD for a performance improvement.

Will any ATX Power Supply fit in the 990 MiniTower?
The system comes with 265 watts but I'd like to install a more powerful supply so I can upgrade the video card to whatever I want.
On NewEgg, the sizes of the various power supplies seem to be slightly different dimensions than the Dell Optiplex 990 supply.
Plus, Dell doesn't leave any margin for error in replacing with the exact same dimensions as the original equipment. They have all this aluminum and such preventing even a few millimeters difference in size with the replacement.
I prefer a Corsair Gold 80 Plus.
Thanks.

Hello I own the M92p Desktop (ThinkCentre)/Serial Number: MJ09MZC/Machine Type Model: 3227DU7           I have transplanted the motherboard into a atx case to add a larger power supply. The motherboard is fully functional and only powers on with the existing FPC from the lenovo case                     (yeah I have to leave both cases open to power it on, it ain't pretty folks).           The proprietary one piece connector from the lenovo only fits on the motherboard. Although the front panel connectors from the new atx case are the regular [pwrswitch] [hdd led+] [hdd led-] etc.. and do not power on the system.           From my understanding these FPC's are only signal and ground wires, I need the correct combination to power on my system. My question is how do I align the atx case FPC's in order to accomodate the motherboard in the same fashion the FPC's from the Lenovo case do? Thank you for your time and patience. Also if anyone could link me to bios and chipset updates for this system I would appreciate it as well.

A:M70e Tower-memory, graphics & power supply upgrade

If you don't wish to buy memory from Lenovo, both Kingston and Crucial have 'System Specific' memory for your system that are guarranteed to work. Memory timings must be match what the BIOS expects for the system to recognize it, and generic memory often doesn't work.

Use your Hardware Maintenance Manual for instructions on how to upgrade the memory. After making any memory change, run 2 passes of MemTest86 to ensure all is well.    A few older system types (eg. some models of M58), required a BIOS update to support 4 GB modules.   I'm not familiar with the M70, but it's probably similar to the other models.   If you take the cover off and measure the existing supply, then you'll know if it is a ATX or TFX standard. )

The Mini-Tower uses a standar ATX power supply, and the SFF a standard TFX pwer supply. A power connector adapter (ATX to Lenovo) is required for M92 and forward. For the SFF, the maximum aftermarket TFX is 400w, with 350w being more common -- not a huge increase over stock. For the Mini-tower, I have had an 650w aftermarket Corsair in mine (I recommend one that is semi-modular and shorter, as space is limited inside the case.

Hello, I have a Thinkcentre M77 SFF that I bought off of newegg a few years back. For fun I want to drop a Phenom II x4 965 125w onto the board, which I have just laying around. I was wondering if a cooling bracket would damage the m77 board when applying force? Since the alternate fan I have for the phenom uses clamps and a cooling mount bracket seems to be required Or would the stock fan and heatsink work for the 965?  Also, when it comes to a power supply upgrade are there any more powerful psu out in the markets which would work in the original slim factor case? I can only find 240w replacements online and I am not sure if I will be able to meet the full power requirements when installing the gpu if 240w isn't enough. The upgrade build plan is.Phenom II x4 9652 more 2gb samsung 1333hz sticks (being sent in the mail as I write this)(I haven't decided yet to add) either a geforce 730 or a 1030 lowprofile The bracket I ordered is the "Black Cooler Fan Stand Bracket Base for AMD AM2 Socket PC Computer" on newegg So if anyone can help me to figure all this out I would be grateful. I still plan on putting in the extra ram regardless if I cannot upgrade the cpu. The bracket was fairly cheap and knowing it may not work was in the back of my mind upon purchasing it.

Just wondering if, and how, I can troubleshoot an oddity I have. We run a number of this model Lenovo and decided they would be better with 8Gb of RAM, up from the original 4Gb. All went smoothly until one PC emitted a musical alert on booting after the upgrade, which stopped when I removed the new RAM. I checked I had the new RAM in the correct slot, blue just like the original stick. I tried the suspect stick in the next box and it is fine. Where do I start looking to find out what is going on? Regards, Granville.

A:Thinkcentre m92p memory upgrade failed

I would repace the original 4GB with upgrade memory, test to see if it boots, and then put original memory into upgrade slot and test, if it fails, that slot is probably bad.   You could use it in the other bank, won't be as fast, but you'll have 8GB.

After any memory upgrade or change, I suggest running a couple of passes of MemTest86, the free version, to ensure all is well.

Question is what is the max GPU I can get based on the size restrictions AND the power restrictions of the stock Power Supply ?

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

Hello All,I have just purchaced a ThinkCentre M710 Tower with the optional GeForce GT 730 upgrade for graphics. This video card produces no video even after having 2 technicians come out and replace 1) the motherboard and 2) the GeForce video card. I can get video from the onboard Intel graphics from both the VGA and DisplayPort connectors. Changing the BIOS to initate the PEG first makes no difference in video output except to remove the accessability of the BIOS from any port. The system is running Windows 10 PRO.Here are the options installed from Lenovo;ThinkCentre M710 TowerIntel Core i5-7400 3.0G 4CGT730 2GB D5 64b DP HP4GB DDR4 2400 UDIMMTW B250 210W 85%Windows 10 Pro 64Intel 3165+BT 1x1ac HPI was told that a reinstall of Windows 10 is in order? I would think that this should have been tested at the time of the build. 3 monitors have been used by the 2 technicians for testing.Anyone have any information on using PCIe graphics in place of Intel onboard in this unit?Thank you,Scott

I have a Precision Tower 3620 recently acquired and I am installing a BARCO MXRT 7500 video board. This board need a 8 pins connector to the supply the operating voltages.
The power supply does not have this connector and its capacity is only 290 watts. In order to supply the video board and increase the capacity and want to change by other power supply.
I want to know if DELL has a large power supply that include this 8 pins connector for use whit this 3620 tower?

I have recently bought a New tower( a super tower) a new power supply, 500 volt ATX 2.0. I have tried two motherboards and I can't even get to BIOS. Would this possibly be the CPU? Keep in mind that I tried the bare minimum took out everything except the video card and the power to the motherboard. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact type of motherboard, as I am away from home at the moment.

Hi,I am planning on upgrading the power supply in my Thinkcentre E31 because I'd like to be able to replace the old Quadro410 graphics adapter with something more recent. I ordered a EVGA-80 PLUS 600W ATX 12V/EPS 12V from here. Does anyone by any chance know what adapter I need to fit this on my Lenovo mainboard? 20pin to 14 pin? Or 24 pin to 14 pin? Is there a specific name for that specific adapter? Thanks,Pete

Is it possible to upgrade the power supply on a thinkcentre m82 sff to accomodate more power hungry low profile graphics cards such as the gtx 1050 ti low profile on the PCI express x16 slots? The psref of the m82 states that the PCI express slot can only accomodate a 45w power draw so could I replace the 240w psu in the m82 with a higher wattage psu so I can put a 1050ti low profile in that slot which draws 75w? Would the motherboard have to be replaced? Thanks. On a side note, would it be possible to add a 2tb HDD to a m82 sff which already has a gt 1030 in it? Would that still be in safe power limits? Thanks again.

Dear community, I found a M90p USFF system board in the garbage, fully functional when tested. But without the case or anything else. Repairing, especially old hardware, is something I really value: make something work without having to buy new stuff. I was planning to build my own home-theater mini-pc, and already have standard USB-Audio Front I/O panels, and power buttons, and almost all the rest.Lucky me, so I only need the heatsink, power adapter, and the pinout for USB, Audio and power (the system board was set to restore power automatically, so I could test. But eventually, I want to switch it on with a power button like a normal computer). - I found https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/ThinkCentre-front-panel-connector-power-audi...but the number of pins is not correct.- Pictures I found of the Front I/O 45J9567 are not good enough to really see anything. All wires are within a plastic tube, so no luck either. Can somebody help me out? Are there schematics of the system board? Nowhere I found information of the pins. AC97/HD audio headers look differently, and USB headers normally have a 5+4 pinout (with the M90p USFF it's only 4+4). The hardware manuals I found, only describe the set of headers, but not the exact pinout. kind regards,Tim

Hello, I bought a new Dell power supply a few weeks ago after I got the blinking amber light of doom   I had managed to replace the power supply a few years ago, however in my haste to remove the old supply I forgot to take pictures of where all the cables go and now I am completely lost. I have tried plugging it up but I keep getting a message of "drive one not found Serial ATA and SATA1.  It's got a lot of cords that I don't remember on the old power supply labeled from P1 through P9. If anyone could give me a simple explanation of how to plug these cords up I would really appreciate it because I don't want to have to buy a new computer. Thank you very much

hi, I see inside my pc that all the plugs are connected directly to the motherboard and not  to the power supply except the 4pin and 14 pin. so i'm asking if I plug a modular power supply to the pc will I have to plug only the the 4 and 14 pin (with a 24 to 14 pin adapter of course) ? leave all the rest as it is? beacause I thought all the drives get their power from the power supply directly and not through the motherboard. will appreciate any help.

On the Lenovo specification sheet for the ThinkCentre M700 SFF, it says that some come with the NVIDIA Quadro K420.  If I wanted to install this card myself (meaning mine didn't come with the card), would I need a power supply upgrade?  The maximum power the card will use is 41W. Given that some m700 SFF come with this card, is a power supply upgrade neccessary?  I believe the PSU is currently 210W at 85%.  I attached the spec. sheet, click on m700 SFF to look at the info.

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX280 mini-tower (smallest one thereis), and the original 160W power supply died a few months ago without warning. I ordered a new power supply, but accidentally ordered the wrong size (210W for one of the larger towers). I used it in the meantime until I could get the proper size (although the 210W supply wouldn’t fit in the mini case – I left it out of the case and ran the wires through the power plug hole). The computer booted up just fine with this 210W power supply. I finally got around to ordering the 160W smaller correct size, but that power supply would not boot up the computer (just got an amber flashing light). Thinking it was just faulty, I sent it back and requested a replacement. The replacement did not work either. I ordered a third replacement, and the third did not work either! So now I am back to using the 210W power supply (No. HP-U2106F3) which does not fit in the computer housing. I know these Dell OptiPlex machines are notorious for having power supply and capacitor issues. But the question is, why will the computer power on using the 210W power supply? I contacted Dell and they were of no help whatsoever. The guy told me that 160W wasn’t enough to power my machine and to order a 210W power supply correctly sized for my chassis. Gee, thanks! First of all, they don’t make 210W that fit in the mini towers, and second of all, why did it used to work just fine??? Oh, and no I have not upgraded anything (i.e., video card, etc.) which... Have a 5 y.o. local built white box tower that I'm happy with. Recently unplugged for ten days while on vacation. Came back and first had a hard time getting the back switch to power up, then had to use front switch reset button several times to get the entire unit to power up.

Since then when I power down or unplug, it's very unreliable about powering back up on either switch. I can tell that sometimes the power is getting through due to the light on my router and other times it's not. Even if it is getting through then the front switch may have to be reset several times to actually boot.

Also, after powering down at night via "shut down" on screen or using the front switch (Windows XP Home), then sometimes I can see the DVDRW trying to power up, or see the HD trying to power up - over and over and over.

the receipt describes the case only as ATX4252PCT and the PSU as 340W PS for P4 w/UL.

I've installed one PSU (PC power and cooling dell silencer 470) on a Dell and confident I can do this one. I've never replaced a front switch and don't know anything about this one other than it appears to be integrated with the case.

Need to blow the dust out of the unit but otherwise don't know what else to do. 'fraid to shut down too many more times.

So, do you think it's the PSU or the front switch or both that have a problem? Could I have killed some 5 y.o. backup battery by unplugging for 10 days? Is it a... Read more

A:Power supply or front push button switch?

Replace the power supply with one 350 Watts or greater... of quality, as well as the CMOS battery.
The replacement CMOS battery is only $3.50 at Wal-Mart, and it has been enough time for that to be bad.
Switches rarely to very rarely go bad.
On a computer with that many hours, it could also be the hard drive, but the symptoms are more likely the power supply.

Dear Sir, I'm interested in buying three PCs of the series Lenovo Thinkcentre Minitower M700 10GR and I have a technical question. The PCs are used in a small business situation with a relatively warm working environment of about 30 degrees, for about 16 hours each day. This means that wear is a problem, and parts will have to be replaced. All parts in the M700 are standard issue interfaces and commonly available in many brands, except the power supply, and in the said circumstances this is rather the most likely to fail. Typically when a component fails, it's no longer available as a genuine Lenovo part in the Lenovo service shop. Theoretically it would then be possible to connect the proprietary Lenovo connectors onto a generic PSU, provided I would have the 10 + 4 + 4 + 4 pin-out and voltages. If this information is in the service manual, how do I order it? And if not, could you please provide me with the information by e-mail. Kind regards, M.Wolter ===== Dear Mr. Wolter,With this question I relay you to the lenovo forum. We only do hardware breakfix on the component level, and what you are asking is not part of the lenovo warranty agreement. Please put your question at:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/English-Community/ct-p/Community-ENI hope you'll be more succesfull there.Lenovo PC Products Support Front Office AgentIBM Technology Support Services
