LOGMAN in Windows Server 2019

Q: LOGMAN in Windows Server 2019

1) Suppose there are two user-defined data-collector sets: SQL and SQL-MEMORY. If I use

logman start/stop SQL or logman start/stop SQL_MEMORY
- both commands succeed.
2) If I export, for example, SQL data collector set to the xml file, delete the SQL from Performance Monitor, import it back by
logman import SQL -xml C:\Distr\SQLServer2019\COUNTERS\SQL.xml

and try to start using the same command (logman start/stop SQL ) the following error arises:

The same error arises when starting SQL in GUI.
This error does NOT arise if the SQL data collector set (its xml file) is imported manually!

It means no data collector sets can be started after being imported by
logman import command ... why???

Preferred Solution: LOGMAN in Windows Server 2019

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Microsoft's Windows Server team released a preview of the next Windows Server product, Windows Server 2019, yesterday to the public.

Windows Server 2019 Preview is available for any participant of the Windows Insider program but the post on Microsoft's Windows Server website is unfortunately a bit vague when it comes to actual downloads of the preview version of Windows Server.

The very first thing you need to do is register an organization account or a personal account; Registering in this case means that you join the Windows Insider Program with the account so that you may download and use Insider Builds.

Once you have done that head over to the Windows Insider Preview Server download page and select "Windows Server vNext LTSC PReview" under available downloads. You can download localized versions of the Server 2019 Preview ISO and have 24 hours to download the 4.2 Gigabyte ISO image from Microsoft.

Microsoft plans to release the final version of Windows Server 2019 in the second half of the calendar year 2018. The company plans to release System Center 2019 as well which will support Windows Server 2019.Click to expand...

I have an application running .NET Framework 4.7.2 which we have recently started migrating onto Windows Server 2019 servers. We have started receiving reports of issues in Internet Explorer 11 having issues with controls (which we can replicate). Some of
the errors we see in the console include.

'WebForm_FireDefaultButton' is undefined
'WebForm_SaveScrollPositionSubmit' is undefined
'WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions' is undefined

When an app pool recycle is performed on the application, the issue seems to go away for a period of time, but does return.

I recently came across the following article in which the symptoms appear to be very similar, but for a previous version of Windows Server.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with software running on Windows Server 2019 accessed with IE11?

I'm having an issue customizing the Start Page registry key in Windows Server 2019 (this method works fine in 2016) I would load C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT and add \Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page REG_SZ "Company specific URL"
and when a new user logs in they'd get the "Company specific URL" but with Windows Server 2019 this isn't working.
I have also tried adding "First Home Page" and "Default_Page_URL" and it doesn't make a difference, it seems some sort of mini setup is configuring the registry keys and ignoring or overwriting what I entered into NTUSER.DAT from the
Default user profile.
I've also got IE Enhanced Security Configuration disabled for Admins and Users along with the following other registry keys set that all are working fine.
[HKEY_USERS\DefaultUser\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Friendly http errors"="no"

[HKEY_USERS\DefaultUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

[HKEY_USERS\DefaultUser\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]

Wondering if anyone has found a workaround or missing key that also needs to be set, thanks.

For other controls, such as DEP, CFG,  I still get the error, but the command applies the new setting properly anyway. So far SEHOP is the only setting that is unchangeable, but there may be others as we haven't tested extensively yet. It fails for both
System and App level settings.

I've already asked the
question regarding auto-starting the data collector sets and have posted MS's answer - now it seems the issue can be much broader: I failed to make my user defined data collector sets start according to their schedules, for example:
I created a test data collector set (with several CPU counters), saved it as a template and tested it on Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows Server 2019:

I've tested various user defined data collector sets on all my Windows Server 2019 computers - physical and virtual, domain and non-domain joined, the result is always the same - the data collector sets just don't start and the following event(s) get registered
in the Diagnosis-PLA log:

Here's the codes' description -

No issues arise when starting the data collector sets manually.
Can anyone tell me if it works on your computers with Windows Server 2019?

If this question has already been asked and answered elsewhere, my apologies.
I want to collect IIS worker process perfmon data using logman.  When I add counters in PerfMon, choosing All Instances gives all instances (each w3wp process for each application pool, plus _Total).  When I try to get the same in "logman
create counter" using
-c "\w3svc_w3wp(*)\*"
All I get is _Total, none of the individual instances.
Through getting the wrong end of the stick about parent/instance#index (from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490956.aspx), I happened into trying
-c "\w3svc_w3wp(**)\*"
which gave the individual instances but not _Total.  I've tried a combination of using (**) and (_Total), but that gave the individual instances only.
I'm sure I'm doing something simple wrong and would appreciate someone telling me what it is.
Thank you

March 14th 2019 Windows 7 update

I am very concerned about the news I am reading about the REQUIRED Windows 7 Update that is coming down the pipe in March.

This has something to do with Security Algorithms and is irreversible from what I read.

I would prefer that Microsoft leave Windows 7 Pro alone but I know that they are not going to.

Usually when they do something major like this it kills older software and hardware.

Anyone else worried about what Microsoft is getting us into ??

I have Windows 7 pro computers at home and work.........and I am NOT going to Windows 10.
I will go to Linux.

How do I stop this potential mayhem ?

Make sure the 'Restore' function works in case you need to undo any damage.

The recent Windows Update on Jan 8, 2019 breaks our POS Program Using MS Jet 4.0 affecting hundreds of our customers with thousands of computers. It has affected everyone running
XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 as well as Server.

This update contains a "security update for MS Jet 4.0" but doesn't seem to replace the MSJET40.DLL. Users of our application get "Unrecognized Database Format" errors when accessing files through our program. Rewriting the entire
application to use MS Ace or something else then deploying to thousands of computers is not a viable solution.

Removing the Security Update for Microsoft Windows or the Monthly Rollup always repairs the issue. The problem is that Windows 10 users are unable to turn off updates and others who forget to are right back where they started when the update returns.

In July, this "bug" appeared in one of our "Windows 10 Insider Previews: for Windows version 1803. It was promptly fixed in the very next Windows Insider Preview Build and I currently have Insider Build 1809 without that latest patch
and everything works as it should. That said, I did have a customer with 1809 who had this issue. I currently have Build 18262.rs_prerelease 181012-1414 from the slow ring.

Nobody has changed their database files and they are not using MS Access, just a VB app that uses Access files and Jet 4.0 to open them. The
only change has been this horrendous Windows update that has caused every... Read more

I applied all three available KBs today (KB4480063, KB4480970, KB4480055) and ever since then I'm unable to RDP onto that machine. It worked fine for ages, never had issues with it. The issue originates from one of these updates.
The errors I'm getting are authentication based,
- from Windows client I get "The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted."
- from macOS client I get "We couldn't connect to the remote PC. This might be due to an expired password. If this keeps happening, contact your network administrator for assistance.

Error code: 0x207"
I tried EVERYTHING, different user accounts, different names domain\user or just user etc. It looks like one of these updates broke something, especially since I'm able to log on when I enable connections without Network Level Authentication (I always had
this enabled).

After the may 2019 update, I just could not use Night Light anymore.I can't even access "System" under "Settings" as it crashes as soon as I open it. I know this is a common issue after the update was released but it seems that now most users had their issue fixed yet I didn't.Moreover, I read a suggestion that sometimes updating Intel Graphics Driver solves the issue, Except Lenovo hasn't realeased an updated driver yet. I literally tried every solution I found on the Internet yet nothing is fixed, and Windows released around 4 coluative updates since The May 2019 update but nothing fixed the issue. So is this common? should I wait for further updates?or is there a solution that really fixes the Issue?Thx.

I work in Managed IT and use a T570 with an i7-6700U and 16GB of RAM. Windows 10 decided to do the 1903 update a couple of days ago. Today, I had to roll back to 1809 because 1903 made my system an unreliable mess. Everything was notably slower (though this laptop is so poorly cooled that the CPU is constantly throttling anyway), the system was regularly hard freezing when trying to wake it from locked state or put it to sleep and every thing it froze and I rebooted it, Windows would redetect "Base System Device." In addition, since the update, Lenovo Vantage kept telling me I had updates available for my Thunderbolt firmware and Intel Wi-Fi driver. The Thunderbolt firmware update was for the version I already had installed and constantly failed and so did the Wi-Fi driver. When I tried to manually download and install the update, it said the package was not compatible with my system. All of the above issues have been resolved by rolling back to 1809. I've been very displeased with how Lenovo quality control had slid overall lately but between the constant thermal issues with this laptop and now the 1903 update breaking so much, I have to ask what's going on here. We have a number of clients in the field with this model and if 1903 is going to start breaking them all, I need to know what Lenovo's going to be doing about it and when. Anyone else had these issues and figured out a solution for them? Thanks.

Hello, I am wondering how to have logman output to a specific file. The current behavior I'm seeing is that although its possible to specify a file with the '-o' option, when you start collecting the results, the filename will be appended with an integer

Hello there everyone,
I encountered a serious issue after installing the latest Monthly Rollup from June 2019 on our Windows 7 clients.
