Q: Networking using 230V opinions please

Hi
I have come across this new device from Netgear, is this safe?
It sounds good on paper and I am sure it would answer peoples question on whether to go hard wired or wireless
Any views or opinions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

Based on your subject line, I suspect the only thing you might get out of that particular Netgear product would be some popping noises and possibly some smoke. It is listed as 110 VAC operation only. Any type of simple voltage conversion transformer would probably
block the the data signals.

The unit may have problems in US homes with 240/120 VAC power wiring. I suspect that it may not work too well, if at all, if each unit was plugged into a different 120 VAC phase.

It lists a 14 Mbps data rate. This is slighty faster than a 10 Mbps wired ethernet connection but only 1/7 the speed of most typical wired ethernet connections which are 100 Mbps.

It is slightly faster than an 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless connection but only about 1/4 the speed of a typical 802.11g wireless connection.

A. Printer of choice networked via print server
or
B. Network printer

I like several of the Canon AIO models but Canon does not make a network version. HP does offer ethernet and wireless on a number of their models. I will primarily print photos, occasional text and will be scanning photos and old slides.

Which version / versions of Windows will run on the computers?

You can buy print server adapters from companies such as DLink & Linksys.

There is software that will allow you to share a scanner over a network.

2nd machine:

One of the main concerns is internet connection sharing. In another post a linksys switched router was recomended over a hub sighting bandwith alocation. I have found 2 sets of hardware that I think will suit my needs. So in you opinion(s) would you go with Linksys Etherfast Switched Network in a Box(10/100) found Here for $76 or Linksys Fast Ethernet (10/100) in a box (containing a hub) found Here for $89?

Good Day All!

I’m in need of a complete component list to self build best networking & graphics computer...

I am in the process of building about 10 to 12 websites and will be responsible in developing, maintaining & doing all the graphic work on them.

My need is a computer that will have the ability to generate high-end graphics and file transfers to sites.

Also will need to be great at networking with other in-house computers because I’ll need to have a few computers that will work off of the “main” computer (the one that I’m asking about building).

Please list all components you think I’ll need for the new computer build (including tower case Brand and/or Model)

(It should be interesting to see what various techs think should be in a graphic heavy home built computer should have in it!!)

Thanks a Billion,
Bucannon
Ps) In your opinion, should I use a small or medium business “server” that will run all the information for my computers in my business?

A:Opinions Wanted: Complete Component List to Build Best Networking & Graphics Computer

the recognised high end graphics machine is a Mac - but build your own - i guess you are going the windows PC route
Would you tell us what country you are in - that way people can recommend sites in your country
Also what the maximum budget is - so they also have an idea of price.

If you have a business with PCs - what sort of license do you have for windows - or I assume you would be buying windows 7

A:i have a 230v PSU anyone know how many watts that is?

It could be anything; 200W or 1000W. You need to look at the specs of the unit. There should be a label on the ps with the info.

BTW to find watts, you need to apply the basic formula VxA=W [volts times amps = watts]

This story is super long. So I go in to clean my comp and I have been noticing that my startup has been pretty slow lately. So I cleaned out everything and decided to switch my RAM to different slots. Once I did all this I turned on my comp and my monitor failed to respond. So I put my RAM on their original spots and this time it decided to respond but I also noticed that my heat/cooling fan fell off. I then tried to turn the computer on. But I switched the volt button to 230 while it was off and it responded but my comp instantly turned off. I then found out that I basically destroyed my PSU. I went to the store and got thermal paste and a new PSU and pasted down my fan and installed my new PSU. What I failed to check is to see is if the switch was on 115v or 230v. The switch was towards 230v showing 115v. Did I destroy my PSU again? Also my RAM isn't the problem because I tested it. So when I turned my computer on the same thing happened as the one I previously ruined. Would I need to buy another PSU?
If so on the voltage switch which voltage option is being selected? If the switch to towards 230v and showing 115v or is it the opposite? I know it sounds dumb but I'm that cautious now!

Oh and I also tested my Motherboard so that also isn't the problem.

A:PSU 230v/115v -- did I destroy anything?

If you're lucky, you just fried the PSU and the PSU had a fuse to save the rest of your system. Replace the PSU and test everything!

Hello all!
For months, my pc had no issue booting at the 230 option on my PSU. However, a few days ago I powered it down and it wouldn?t turn back on until I had switched it to 115. This wouldn?t be an issue, except now my USB microphone doesn?t work anymore because it draws too much power. Whenever I try to boot with 230 now, my pc goes on this endless cycle of trying to startup, and the fans speed up and slow down over and over and over again. It?s so annoying!

I'm wiring my new place right now and will have a dedicated circuit for the computer. Is there any reason why I can't run a 230V circuit for the power supply since it (Antec SmartPower 2.0 350W) can be switched to 230V? Nevermind the plug configuration....easy fix.
Just an FYI for folks on the computer all the time: Your watthour meter is measuring the higher of the current draw on L1 and L2. If you're plugged into 110V, you're still paying for 220V. Run anything off of 220V and you cut your power bill in half. A good reason to never buy a 110V window A/C unit!

A:OK to use 230V switch on power supply?

Definition:
"In electrical terms, one watt is the power produced by a current of one ampere flowing through an electric potential of one volt. "

what? We run at 120V here. Are talking about running your computer off the same line as your washer and dryer? Dryers run at 220V @60Hz which is actually just two separate 110V lines, if one of the 110V lines is off the dryer will spin but not heat. That switch on the back of the PSU is designed for other countries running higher voltage at 50Hz. You are asking for trouble if you try to wire it to a dryer outlet. Technically it may work but will likely reduce the life of the unit.

Amps are still amps regardless of the voltage, watt/voltage = amp. A PSU at 230V vs 110V will still draw the same current. You would actually be using more watts on a 230V outlet. Amp * voltage = watts.

Example: lets say a device is drawing 10A -> [email protected] , [email protected]

How do you figure that your powerbill will be any cheaper plugging into a higher voltage?

Ok, just upgraded to Windows 10 this week and been bashing my head bloody for two days on networking issues. What on the green Earth are my networking credentials in Win10? I have a Microsoft account I'm logging into Win10 pc with (which I hate but besides the point), everything is asking me for credentials, and I put in the email address and password I log into Windows with and it doesn't work. I have a network with a workgroup and homegroup set up, and my Win7 pc and Win8 pc have no problems talking to each other but My Win10 can't access the win7 pc, though it accesses the Win8 pc just fine. I also can't access a WDMyCloud on my network, it keeps asking me for Windows credentials and nothing I put in works, it does not like the email address/pass I use to log in to Windows 10 either. I'm literally stumped. Can someone help me out?

Recently when my satellite internet ceased to work for over 30 hours I contacted my ISP Hughesnet. After doing the usual dumb routine that other satellite internet users probably know, he concluded that my internet was not working because I did not have my IP address set to obtain automatically. I have been using this internet for two months and this has never caused an issue before. Even though after arguing with him and changing it to make him happy it came on about 75 seconds later, I refuse to believe that was my true issue. So I was wondering if anyone with a lot of networking knowledge could verify that this was indeed the problem. I would like to change it back because I had set my own IP address for a reason.

Edit: The thing that makes it even harder to believe him is that I had my modem hooked directly to the computer when I called, and he had me run ipconfig and insisted that I was connected to a router. He said that whatever it is that he asked for in this information had indicated I WAS connected to a router. I was not. I was seriously connected directly to my modem. We argued about it for at least 5 minutes.

I'm tearing my hair out !
(And there's not that much of it.)

I have a set of laptops (used in a school classroom). They connect to the LAN via wireless .. or, at least, they used to.

Specifically: Toshiba SP2100 with D-Link AirPlus G+ wireless PCMCIA cards.

After trying many, many things:

- Boot SP2100 from XP CD (SP2)
- Don't fix any of the driver issues
- Plug wireless card in
- Cancel plug&play
- Install correct driver with d/loaded Setup_v204.exe
- WZC managing wireless connection
- Sees wireless network (WEP) but
- Won't connect automatically (after setup wizard)
- Won't connect manually
BUT ..
- Boot into "safe mode with networking" and wireless works faultlessly

I've got to be missing something really simple.
Please, please can anyone tell me what it is ?

Thanks !

So is the package worth the money? Are there any bottlenecks that makes this setup not worth buying? I'm not a hardcore gamer but I enjoy playing games and watching movies. Well, something happened on the way to pick up my new computer

I was talking to the Manager that was handling the return when showing him what I wanted when he asked if I had looked at the VPR Matrix line (I know, he's trying to push his own line), but had a look at it anyway and thought I'd at least have a look around the net and ask here.

Now they have one that's along the same line as the Compaq ($100 cheaper I think) but they also had one where the biggest difference between it and the Compaq is that it has a DVD RW with it and is $200 more than the Compaq.

I've looked around the net and haven't found any really negatives about them ( one of the little rubber feet on a laptop fell off on a few of them, but that's the most I've come across.

The differences so far I've seen is supposedly these machines aren't as prioritary as other name brands and don't come crammed with all the stuff others make you take. But on the other hand it say's it doesn't come with "alot" of software the others get in packages.

Also their site has "download drivers", "FAQ", "Get Started Guide" ect, so the help and tech help seems to be there.

I have also used Adware + Adwatch for spyware and pop up blocker...i have noticed on my old computer that it mess it up where it won't load properly after deleteing something in the load processes...but after reinstalling xp pro and adware and adwatch the only problem i got is on the shut down process... adwatch makes xp hang on shut down...if i close it it shuts down properly...other than that i have noticed nothing wrong and they work wonders on popups...

What do i do??? I am a little lost and haven't been in to the latest computer stuff till recently and i want to hear the pros and cons from people that got the software to let me know what to try...I am switching my AV from Nortons to AVG since i have heard so much good stuff about it and i want to see for myself...thank you very much and let me know what you think

Hi mate...

Just played the demo, not the full game yet. Well it's a good game but it depends on your taste. If you want the WWII background you may be disapointed...

Of course you can play it. I could play it with my C2D E6300, 2GBs of RAM and my poor GF7600GS at good frame rates, with anti-aliasing (2x though) at 1024x768 and most settings to medium...So your 7800 will have no problems. But you may need to sacrifice some visual settings, possibly because of your RAM. Still looks great though.

I know you can go from vcr to pc by way of a camcorder but the vcr i have doesn't have s-video out - (camcorder only has s-video and firewire connections)

any thoughts?

That is the easiest and quickest way to go, but you're limited to just basic editing (starting and stopping the VCR tape at certain points).

The other way to do it is to get a TV card for your PC and record that way. You create .mpg files that you can edit with a DVD authoring program. It's not too hard but it's rather time consuming. The nice thing about it is you can create DVD's that have menus so you can jump to different sections on the DVD.

Hey guys, just wanted to get peoples opinions about a system i'm building, here's the list of specs

Coolermaster 830 stacker
Raidmax 630 PSU
ASUS P5wdh MOBO
Corsair 2 x 1GB ddr2 800 (pc6400) dominator ram
XFX 7950 GT GPU
Intel core 2 duo E6600
lite-on 16x DVD-R drives x 2
Wester Digital Raptor X 150gb hard drive

So after all this, im in the market for doing a dual monitor set up, was planning to go with 2 dell 2407. but was wondering if anything else could compare, ive also been looking at the hp 24 inch also. Is anything else out there?? I do alot of photoshop, dreamweaver, and flash, all at the same time. Add web browsing, chatting on AIM, and listening to music as well. Will this system be able to handle that, I was considering upping the ram to 4gb or will just 2 gb suffice...?? or is everything im putting together just straight overkill, but in this computer world, nothing is more fun than overkill...

A:Need Opinions

Well, its certainly not overkill! But if you are going to be doing a lot of webpage design then you will want more storage than the Raptor can provide. A 500GB WD or Seagate would give you lots of room.

I am looking into a new PC, as the one I have is actually giving me problems, and since it's too hard to find a Socket 478 system board that supports RDRAM (RAMBUS), I am considering a new PC. Here's one I spec'ed out at dell.com. I didn't go all out on the hard drive, or other apps, as I will be transferring my 500gb drive from my current machine to this one (or what ever PC I get). I will probably just use my current PC as a TV tuner PC, as I have a Radeon 9600 AIW that I probably won't be able to transfer over, due to it being AGP.

Here's the specs on the Dell:

Okay i have a sony vaio right now, my info is on the bottom. Well im planning on updating for gaming purposes and plus my system is slower than i want it to be. So well the computer now taht i have is model Rx4462ds im pretty sure. I dont know what kind of mother board i have. If you people can please find out if its any good. I want to get a new vido card and a new cpu. So any suggestions for like a good price.. video card ill spend about 150 on and cpu im thinking of 2.4ghz 800fsb pentium 4. So what kind of video card do you people suggest? i want a geforce 4 but i dont know which one i want for the price and i want it to have good gaming preformance. Any opions would help.

A:I need opinions..

well, if you're looking at that CPU you will also need a new motherboard. The 800Mhz CPU's are new and need motherboards designed to take that those CPU's.

You should also find out the wattage of your powersupply - this should be marked on the powersupply itself. For the new system you may want to upgrade to at least a 350 watt powersupply(which may require a new case as well)

For the Video card I would not go with a GeForce4, I recommend a ATI Radeon Card in the 9000 series.

Without knowing the exact model of of Sony(not Rx4462ds) I don't know how much you can keep from your old system. Although you use Rambus Memory which is not the common type which is DDR. Its more expensive and few manufacturers use it. The harddrive and optical drives you can reuse.

Which should I buy? DDR2 Dual Channel 533 mhz ram or DDR2 667 Mhz Ram. Prices are almost the same. im going to use the PC for gaming. My motherboard is a ECS ELITEGROUP 945p-a and my processor Intel Pentium D 830.

Here is the first choice- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...694&SRCCODE=PRICEGRABBER&CMP=OTC-PRICEGRABBER

Second ONe- http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...=M56-6002&SRCCODE=SHOPPINGDF&CMP=OTC-SHOPPING

First choice is 2 modules- ideally for dual channeling, second choice is just one module.

I am running an AMD System on an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard. I am running with 1Gb of RAM and I have a Soltek GeForce FX5600 128Mb video card.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed that one of the fans inside the computer was starting to get a little loud. I have also noticed a slight reduction in speed performance in terms of running applications (ie. wait time). Two days ago my system just decided to reboot after running for a couple of hours. Shortly thereafter it happened again and since that time, it intermittently reboots without notice. At times it does not even get to the MS Windows XP logo screen before rebooting again. I opened up the computer and the fan that was noisy was the Video Card fan. I removed the card and cleaned up the fan and now it runs much better. The other fans in the system are clean and running fine.

I am wondering where my problem most likely lies? If my video card had overheated and damaged itself, could it intermittently reboot my system like I have explained above? Does it sound like a motherboard problem? How about a MBR Virus?

Since my motherboard does not have onboard video I cannot simply remove the video card and test it with the onboard card. As such I am looking for some opinions prior to going to the local computer store and purchasing possible replacement parts.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm looking into a good PSU that will help me power a system with the following specs:

amd 64 x2 6000+ 3.0 ghz processor
Geforce 8800gt 512mb video card
2 gigabytes GSkill gaming RAM
ASRock Aliven NF6G mobo
160 gigabyte western digital hard drive 7200 rpm
and 2 case fans

I was looking at a 500watt thermaltake purepower power supply priced at around 54 dollars on newegg. But I noticed on another thread that the amperage it provides may be lower than I need, so I need a second opinion, and if this one is inadequate, a similar PSU that provides the power I need for about the same price and maintains quality, a.k.a. >70% efficiency at load at the very least.

PLEASE help me because I want to make sure that this system will work when I put it together. Also, I would appreciate any other opinions on the hardware I'm choosing. For instance, the mobo. I'm not sure whether or not I should buy that particular model or not. If anyone has a suggestion of another good quality gaming mobo for about 60 bucks, please suggest it.

i'm stuck deciding between two systems...

1.

- ASUS P5GD1 Pro Intel915P
- Pentium 4 LGA775 3.4GHz, 800MHz FSB,1MB L2 Cache, (550)
- Seagate 160GB 7200RPM IDE HDD WITH 8 MB BUFFER
- TwinMOS 1GB DDR-400 Dual-Channel Kit,
- Compaq Original Multimedia PS/2 Keyboard, Sliver/Dark
- AOC 17" Flat Screen CRT
- MSI NX6600GT-TD128E 128MB DDR3 DVI(pci-express)
- Genius PowerScroll Eye Metallic Optical Mouse
- TASK Dual Fan Power Supply 420W
- ASUS 4x DUAL Layer 16X DVD+/-R DVD Writer Black
- iCute 0311SL-BB with front USB and 1394

2.

-GIGABYTE K8NF-9 nForce4,
-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Socket 939
-all the rest the same...

It's generally going to be used for 3d moddelling, games and office work.
The amd will be faster in gaming and the intel better at apps but is the
difference noticeable?

also will this Pentium 4 (2MB L2 Cache) LGA775 3.2GHz be faster than
the 3.4 ghz lga775 with 1mb cache?

thanx
