Q: Network Usage app show false data

Win 8.1/64 with all the latest fisxes, I am on a slow satellite internet connection (Starband) and do almost all our downloading from midnight to 6 am because that window does not count against our bandwidth usage. Last night I downloaded about 450mb between midnight and 6 am and the network usage app reported zero usage between midnight and 6 am but reported it all in the 6am window which is a problem for me. This showed at 6:04 am which makes it physically impossible.
Yesterday I did the registry hack to remove the 20% system reserved bandwidth in order to speed up the network and wonder if this could of had an impact on the false recording?
All suggestions appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I also recently set my wifi connection to a metered connection to save bandwidth and wondering if that can cause the weirdness with the Network Usage app. Now the network app only flashes briefly and disappears when started. Did an uninstall and reinstalled from app store and the same weirdness occurs where if just flashes briefly when selected then goes away. Also when I click on estimated usage or reset under my network icon in settings nothing happens. The registry key for viewing network usage is 1.

In windows 8.1 accessing near by wi-fi networks list next to clock showed data usage for each monitored network right under network name , i understand that windows 10 now monitors data in general over a one month span unrelated to which network you use or billing periods which is far beyond the definition lame , so can this feature of windows 8.1 be enabled on Windows 10 in any form for even one single network ?

Hi all.

I wonder if anyone could shed a bit of light on a slight dilemma I'm having. The other day my bank phoned me up and said the software they tell all customers to download (called "Trusteer Rapport") had flagged up my computer as infected with Malware, namely "CerberusNG" and "SpyEye". Apparently this had detected the virus and somehow protected me from a keylogging attempt, but they suggested I run a scan anyway.

This surprised me a bit, because I've got firewalls up and I'm generally quite diligent with my virus-scanning. However, I decided to be thorough, so I ran scans with MSE, Malwarebytes, Avast, Kapersky, and Bitdefender. The Avast was a boot-time scan, but I got bored halfway through and gave up (it was taking ages and I'd already run the four other programs).

None of these threw anything up whatsoever. But I logged into my internet banking again today, and Rapport again said there was a keylogging attempt. This time, when I looked in the console, above the logged events it said:

This does not necessarily mean you have keyloggers on your PC. However, if any of the applications on your PC tried to log keystrokes while you were entering information to the websites below it failed.

However, to the best of my knowledge I have no applications which might try to log keystrokes. In normal circumstances I would be inclined to ignore this, but the virus warning has made me a bit jumpy.

A:Potential virus, but scans show up nothing. False positive?

IF it was your bank, you have done the things most advised to find and cure such things. If none of those shows a problem, chances are it's them that need to sort their software. I would feel very inclined to ignore it, after all the log does say if there was any attempt, it failed.!

I have two problems:

I have a lot of scanning data, all date and time stamped. All the scans show different status of shipped packages (all shipments have unique ID#, but there are multiple scans on route for all of them to track the packages). I want to find all the packages, for which there was "misdirected" scan, then for all of them, show the scan before. So, the end result would be all the scans that show for each package where it was misdirected (the terminal# of the scan before the misdirect scan).

I want to automate this: run 5 queries every two hours between 8am and 10pm, copy and paste all results into Excel to specified areas (e.g. first query results to A1, second to A5000, third to A10000, etc. or onto different tabs), save as .csv to a specific folder, then send it as attachment to a given e-mail address. Even partial solution can be good.
I only know macros (somewhat), not as much VBA, so I tried that with the TransferSpreadsheet command, but can't get it work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

so like the title says i have been using Brinks method to reset Data Usage by deleting the SRU folder contents , now somehow the SRU folder decided to stop rebuilding data , so i would like of all who has any sort of knowledge about this topic to supply tips regarding :
1 - If there is an MS Fixit app dedicated for that issue ?
1 - Appropriate folder permissions for the SRU folder
2 - Registry entries related to data usage and folder
3 - Services that regulates/operates data usage
to help me trouble shoot that issue ?

Hi I have a Portege z10t and I use to be able to see my data usage in the setting. I use to tell what I had used in my billing cycle.. I can't even get the billing cycle date to change now.. Not sure if it is a hardware issue or a software issue.. Any help would be appreciated Thanks

I ran Housecall's antiviral program this afternoon, and also received a message regarding the GIGGER trojan. I had already run Norton's antiviral program without results, and was frantically trying to find out why my CPU Usage is suddenly 99 to 100%. I defraged my drive, cleaned out my cache and closed all extraneous programs without success. After I rebooted as Housecall's recommended after removing the Trojan, my CPU was just fine for several hours; now it's back up to 100% and stays there despite my shutting down and rebooting a second time. I have all the lastest antiviral definitions downloaded from Symantec.

Any ideas?

Hello. Im flabbergasted. This day, during playing my videogame I have discovered that the computer slowed down. A lot. Task manager shows 100% HDD usage. Antivirus scans (malwarebytes, adwcleaner, drweb cureit) showed nothing, except one; RogueKiller finds some recognized dll's but cant delete them.

I suppose this is a virus, because the day before I was looking at some porn on sites which I dont generally view and well... porn sites are full of this stuff.

I seem to have the same 6 Registries as you. I have no idea where I could've possibly got them from, but I'm also getting the same error as you. Error 5 being "ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED" I'm really hoping for help on this as well, so I'm bumping for you in hopes of someone being able to help us. If I find anything that helps me, I'll post it here, otherwise if ANYONE could be of any assistance, I'm sure we'd both be greatly appreciative.
I've tried running in safe mode, and am on a Windows 8.1, it still gave the same error. Also ran many malware programs myself, which as you said, came up with nothing.

After a false Adwcleaner Quarantined a 13 pages of data it rebooted and there was nothing on the screen, the F keys didn't work, the bios was gone, no way to comunicate with the Windows 8 computer. I tried to reinstall Windows 8, the disk would not boot. Without a bios I cant change the boot order.
   I power on and it beeps 2 times, the HD spins a little, the Optical drive is checked and stoped, it sounds as though it is trying to boot time after time for about 8 minutes, then it will stop, wait 15 seconds and start trying to start agian.
  I took the HD out, opened it on another computer, found the the Quarantined folder. There is a bunch of things like this  .

Hi you all,
First time posting on a forum so have that in mind

I really need som help with a VBA code.

I have a Woorkbook that includes an overview tab and a Create New button (this works ok), when creating new a ne Sheet is added to the workbook with a specific value as sheet name and that value is also added to first empty sell in column C on sheet "Overview" and to cell "C:4" in the new sheet.

The new sheet is a copy from a Template (Sheet called Datasheet) and have a list of checkboxes on it.
The name of these text boxes are also headlines on the overview tab and are supose to show the value true or false.

So to my question:
When I click one of the textboxes in the sheet i want to add the value to the same row as were the data in cell C:4 is and to the cell with the headline of the checkbox.

I`m adding a word doc trying to explain the problem. I can send the workbook if needed, nothing secret.

I need to be able to take one worksheet and see if the data on there is located on any other worksheet. I don't need to know which worksheet it is on, just if it exists. If there is a way to mark which worksheet the matching data is on, that would be better. Please see my example. On sheet 4, it is looking for matching data from worksheets A, B and C from column A. I tried a 3D reference but I don't think you can do that with Match from what I'm reading. Thank you!

I would like to be able to monitor my cpu usage and physical ram usage in the task bar, much like how windows 7 has a desktop gadget.
Google search has told me to use task manager, and to check the "hide when minimized" option, and it'll display the square green and black meter.
But for some reason when I tried to add a shortcut to task manager to my startup folder, that little graph never shows up anymore.

Also in the past, when I installed windows media center on my desktop, there was a little icon added that was black/green/yellow/red that monitored cpu usage. I can't seem to find that..
So does anyone know of a program that can monitor cpu usage AND physical ram? I'd appreciate it.

Goto C:\Windows\System32 and right click the taskmgr.exe and create a shortcut.

Cut and paste that on your desktop.

When you activate it and then minimize it, you get the little green icon in the Task bar.

I bought a new desktop last year to run high-end software used for my degree; I installed Windows 8 on it, having got on with it on my laptop. I did notice though, after venturing into the Task Manager, that my CPU usage was at 100%. All the time. Even when idle. In fact, resource monitor says it's working at 108% load! I thought this was rather odd, so investigated further:

It appears that task manager divides the 100% usage proportionally between the processes using the CPU. So for example if Firefox, Word and Notepad were using 5%, 3% and 2% respectively, Task Manager would report 50%, 30% and 20% usage. I was initially concerned that my processor was going to take some serious damage to its life expectancy if it was being constantly loaded - but the performance monitor in Norton Anti-virus shows the CPU load to be much, much lower - where I'd expect it to be.

My system is an 3.4GHz i7, with 16GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. People have suggested a fresh install, but it's an almighty pain backing everything up and re-installing VPN servers and software through various security measures, so I'd rather not...

Any clues?

Just recently I noticed that the CPU is going all the time (The bottom of the laptop is very hot to the touch; and I can hear the CPU fan constantly going). Even when I get the CPU usage down < 5%, I can still hear it. Also, when I disconnect it from the outlet; the battery drains FAST. In the past it the laptop quiets down and cools off if left idle for awhile, so this is something that is happening recently.

After noticing it, I ran a scan with MBAM - it found and removed a few Malware.Trace registry keys but that didn't seem to help.

This happened an hour ago, all of a sudden. I know that my network connection is up, but

Internet Explorer 8 started reporting &#8220;Page cannot be displayed&#8221; messages; just to be on the safe side, I added IE and ports 80,443,21 to the Win FW exceptions list, at no avail. I also ran the diagnostic utility the report of which is attached below.

At this point I switched to using Firefox which connects properly and which I am using to report this problem to the forum ;-)

At the same time, when I do on Skype " Help --> Check for updates", Skype comes up with a message &#8220;Cannot connect, the computer does not seem to have internet access&#8221;. At the same time Skype can be used to successfully call my contacts and also displays dynamically my contacts&#8217; Online/Offline status. Only &#8220;check for updates&#8221; fails.

I am pulling my hair trying to figure out what is wrong, but this does not help and only makes me balder. It&#8217;s worth noting that the same problem popped up 2 weeks ago, at which time I decided to format the system drive and reinstall Windows. After the reinstallation the problem went away, just to re-appear one hour ago.

Am running XP Pro SP3.
IE8 started saying "page cannot be displayed". This happened all of a sudden; I have neither installed anything new nor changed a parameter. However my network connection does exist and I switched to using Firefox, which does not generate this error (and through which I am sending this post).

To add insult to injury, I am still able to use Skype to make calls and see the online status of my contacts, but Skype --> Help --> "check for updates" fails because of my "not being connected to the Internet", which is a lie of course. Some other SW is behaving similarly, e.g. Quicktime cannot connect outside when started. My Outlook mail does function, though, and I am able to send and receive email.

After the problem had started I noticed on Task Manager that a process called 123.exe was running. I have then run every malware detection software I know of, and my PC is getting by now one of the cleanest bills of health, ever.

Up to now I haven't been able to make the problem go away. A few weeks ago a similar problem started. At the time I decided to reformat drive C and reinstall Windows from scratch. After that my PC went back to normal for several weeks, until today.

some days ago, when analyzing another problem, i stumbled upon a fatal error in the CPU performance display in the Microsoft task manager. I wrote a little bit about this problem in the following post.


In summary: for me, the task manager as well as the resource monitor and the performance monitor do not show the correct CPU utilization.

Here is an example.

I start a test and the CPU display of core 0 climbs to 100% in Task Manager.

The Resource Monitor shows the same thing.

Only the performance monitor shows the correct load, but the display it "inconsistent".

The processor load is normally shown up to max. 100%, but my core 0 run according to the performance monitoring with up to 120%. ??

The Process Explorer shows the correct utilization of my core 0.

HWiNFO also shows the load correctly.

I suddenly had the following apprehension.
If you cannot correctly measure the utilization of a system, so it's not possible to control its performance properly. ??

So I immediately opened a support ticket at Microsoft by telephone and then described the problem accordingly by email.

A few hours later I received an email with the following text. "Dear Mr. Fuchs, your support case has been closed."

I was wondering where all my hard drive space has gone today, and I wondered if a program that could show you what was on the hard drive existed. Kind of like a pie chart of your hard drive - each segment belonging to different categories.
Does something like this exist? It would be great to know where all the space has gone so I can delete some rubbish.

have 3 networked drives in tower setup to share...laptop connects to these drives...when i boot laptop i get a notification stating the machine was unable to connect to all network drives...well, go to my computer and all drives have the red x over them...BUT if i double click on any and all of the drives i am able to connect...

how do i get the laptop to not notify me of this since i can truly connect...ALSO, at the same time not show the red x...

The vista machine connected via wire to the FIOS actiontec router can see and access the vista laptop but not vice versa. However, when I bring up the network map from the laptop network/sharing center full network, i do see the desktop but when I click on the network from the start menu, I do not see it? Why different and how can I make it work?

Hi. I have a problem with my wireless connection. The tab under network connections does NOT show wireless connection. This happened after I reinstalled winxp. I installed the wireless driver but it did not work. I can only connect to the internet using the wired connection. What should I do?

I have five Sata drives. Of these five, Windows 7 Pro 64 "Computer management" reports that two of them still are 100% free despite both having significant usage as reported in "Computer" and "Explorer"

Hello again ... I'm having problems getting weatherbug to work with XP Pro 32 bit and Win 7 U 32 bit. I have another computer that has no issues with weatherbug with an XP OS. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it on both OS yet instead of data I have "?". I have the same anti virus and firewall on the computer that has no issues with weatherbug and the setting for them are the same on the computer that has issues with the software. Anyone out there that can help me out with this problem?

Hi ... I'm curious as to why my Hitachi DVD_ROM GD_255 wouldn't find any data from this disk that i have here ... The cd rom is set to autoplay which that works but when i put this certain disk in it wouldn't find no data at all and i know for sure there is data on the disk ... Is it my cd rom the problem ???

Hi peeps, here's a seemingly unsolvable problem I have:

I want to network my two PCs (An Acer Vista Laptop and my old HP XP Desktop) so that I can play network games (Operation Flashpoint).

So I connect them both wirelessly to the router (a cheap SWEEX one). Now when Iook on my Vista Laptop's Network place I can see the Laptop I'm using the router (and can access it's page and everything) but I can't see my XP desktop from here. And when I go into the Desktop's network places I can't see the router or either of the computers I'm using.

And I assume that this network problem is why I can't see a server in my game.

Now I understand that file and printer sharing is turned, the firewall is definately turned off and I think the appropriate services are turned on (well to make sure I turned every single service on ) There must be some more complex reason why my XP hates to network!

Although I am by no means a noob to general computing I am reasonably new to networking. Can you clever lot help me?

Whenever the PC "GROTTO_2" is started and the router becomes available,
it generates FALSE internet traffic (Up and Downloads).
It is immaterial whether the router is connected to the ADSL line or not.
This traffic is visible on the "BANDWIDTH METER PRO" graph, of which I've made a composite screen dump,
of which I show a small portion:

This traffic goes on for approximately 30 minutes and then starts to taper off.
I will appreciate all help to get rid of this problem and any other caused by a presumed hacking of GROTTO_2.

When searching in Google and I click on a link in the listing it typically gets re-directed. If I cut and paste the link address in a new window or tab it is ok. I often get warnings of attacks (dark red background in warning message)...also getting error messages of Bell Internet Connection errors however if I open a new tab or window, Google works fine. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and there have been flags indicating the need to remove things. It takes a very long time to start up the computer, sometimes a blank screen and end up having to shut down and try again.

When I was using XP I had installed a useful shell extension called Exif Infotip which would show EXIF data if you hovered the mouse pointer over an image file. That doesn't seem to work in Win7. Anybody know of a similar facility that will work in Win7 or even show the Exif data in the file Properties? Thanks for any advice.

I read somewhere that none of the field names should have spaces in them, so I went and changed all of the field names with spaces in them removing the spaces. I went through all of the reports so far, and I have one based on a query that looks for a DeviceName in one table. A report is used to supply the data once a match is found. The strange thing that has happened is that the first time that you type in a DeviceName, the query finds the data but the report does not. Close the report, type the serach name again, and the report displays the data. Type another search name, and the report displays the first name again. Then if you run the report a third time, it displays the second search name. It is as if the report is out of step with the query.

I use a criteria in the query [Forms]![DeviceRecordSearch]![DeviceName] which pops up a parameter box. Type in the first search name, the box clears, and type it again and it works.

I want to set MS office so that when I look in a folder or my documents it shows the files in a list rather than icons. Can I reset so that it defaults this way for all existing folders and new ones I create.

Open any folder...My Documents will do...and arrange it the way you want all folders to be arranged using the View menu.

Once you have it the way you want it, up at the top go to Tools>Folder Options and go to the View tab. Click the "Apply to all folders" button, click OK.

If it's the appearance of folders that open when you use the Save As or Open feature in an Office application, if they don't display the changes you made in Folder Options, on the right-hand side, just above where the folder contents display, there are several buttons.

Hover the cursor over each until you find the "View" button. Click the tiny down-pointing arrowhead next to it to open the list of choices and click on the one you want.

In order to upload file to server with JQuery, we need to set the contentType to "False" so that the browser will automatically encode it and add the boundary.

but I noticed that in the header request, the contentType is missing , instead of : multipart/form-data;Boundary=--------XXXXXX

Win 7 Pro 64-bit. On reboot, I want Task Manager to start automatically, as early as possible, ideally in the Processes tab, showing processes from all users, and sorted by CPU usage (with max CPU usage on top).

If that's too specific, then I just want Task Manager to start automatically on reboot, as early as possible, regardless of its focus.

How can I do this?

If it's helpful, I have autoruns, but I've never used it to make a new startup program.

Win 7 64 bit Dell Optiplex 780. 4G RAM.
A few days ago the system went sideways and now I have very high (but fluctuating) CPU usage and memory usage.  Processes in Task Manager  are running wild and some are showing multiple instances where I wouldn't have expect them to be so. Using Chrome to make this post but IE repeatedly crashes and allowing the crash to search for a resolution to the problem does not produce results. Details have shown issues with various dll files. 
I've temporarily removed avast. Installed and run malwarebytes, adware, jrt, ccleaner. Did a scan disc. All these come back clean.
Thinking this is a windows issue but not sure where to start. 
Any thoughts?

Please start with this program.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (A.K.A. MBAR) from HERE
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain.
If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Hello All

I was browsing the internet when a window opened and it looked odd so I closed it.

As soon as I did so, all my internet windows closed at once.

I ran spybot, MS Antispyware Beta, AVG Anti virus, everything was of the latest update as of today Dec 9th. It found nothing.

I searched the internet and found the Tech support guy website, and this is my last hope.

My google.com homepage keeps being hijacked to this:


And invites me to download fishy Antyspyware: spy trooper, Spy Axe or TheSpyguard.

I understand it is a painful process to remove this and I need someone who would help me by giving me a step by step guide of how to remove whatever it is that creates the hijacks of my hompage and allows pop ups.

I sincerely hope someone can help.

My problem is my dvd-rom shows every disc as a writeble CD with all 702 MB space free. I haven't tried any DVD but this has happened with every CD I used. And also when I used a new writeable CD to burn some data on it , it didn't work. I use Roxio Burn software. Sometime ago I tried to google the answer to my problem and some recommended me to update my firmware. I do not have any idea what it is and also coludn't find it anywhere.

I have just bought a Dell Inspirion . I live in Mexico and use a Telcel 3G internet stick. This connects to internet using cell towers. I pay a monthly payment for 3Gigs of data . I can monitor my data useage by going to Networking and shareing
in control panel , click on my connections under active netwoks. When downloading upgrades, or veiwing a web page (surfing the net) I can in real time watch my DATA being used ,,,,,,,,,,,Problem is when NO downloading is being done by me for
example on surfing no upgrades sometimes I can watch the data being use (and quite a bit (155MB in ten minutes) way too much. Now this Dell is WiFi loaded ,So is ther any way someone can connect to my computer via my WiFi?... I use the STICK on my desk top (no WiFi) and no problem. Would apprecate any Help

I doubt that this is happening. But why don't you turn the WiFi off to be really sure.

And 155MBs for Windows updates is not unusual. I have seen as many as 700MBs with one batch of updates. If your Windows is still somewhat backlevel (which most new systems are), you will be getting a lot of those.

Hi. im using  a lenova ideapad and i was wondering if other people find that the data is getting chomped through. Ive only registered my ideapad and looked at my documents on my USB and that was 2GB. So i used my phone as a hot spot, didnt download anything, just looked at a couple of pages and less than 5 minutes later 3GB was gone. What the hell????
