XP Mode virtual machine cannot access internet

Q: XP Mode virtual machine cannot access internet

After changing XP Mode's network adapter (in order to get port forwarding working), I found that I cannot access the internet using a browser anymore.

I went from Shared Network to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller in the Virtual Machine settings, which broke its internet connection completely and gave the "limited or no internet connectivity" message. After going back to Shared Network, when loading any page in any of the virtual machine's browsers (Firefox, IE), the page would remain blank then time out after a while. However, pinging websites using cmd worked in the virtual machine. Using the 'repair' option in XP's Network Connections did not help. Disabling the firewall did not help either.

Also, the Windows 7 host machine's internet is working fine.

How do I fix this situation, without having to start anew with another virtual machine?

Preferred Solution: XP Mode virtual machine cannot access internet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If available, run system restore in XP using a point where Internet worked.

Hi,

The issue could be incorrect configuration of XP mode.

Hi All,

Is is possible to access the Internet from inside an XP Mode Virtual Machine, running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit ?

Looking at the Virtual Machine Networking settings, I have a choice of three options for Adapter 1: "Internal Network" , "Shared Networking (NAT)" , and "Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller".

Looking at Network Connections inside XP Mode, it says the LAN or High-Speed Internet status is "Connected, Firewalled" (and Device Name "Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Generic)")

But Internet Explorer inside XP Mode says "the page cannot be displayed. To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click Diagnose Connection Problems". I have tried ticking Automatically detect settings under Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.

Windows 7 ipconfig says IP address 172.26.76.188, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 172.26.76.1.

Inside XP Mode ipconfig says IP Address 192.168.131.65, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.131.254. I can successfully ping both 172.26.76.188 and 172.26.76.1 from inside XP Mode.

I can also successfully access "http://172.26.76.188:8080" from Internet Explorer inside XP Mode (because I am running Apache Tomcat on Windows 7).

Thanks for your time and advise,
Best regards,
James

Which one of these options do you have selected? The one that you want is Shared Networking (NAT).

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

I've been using the XP mode on Windows 7 for a few years now and all of a sudden the last few times it's prompting me for a password to log in. Also it had a error message saying integration features not working. And the time it takes to start the Virtual Machine is very very long. What to do?

Noticed when closing the virtual machine it says "hibernating". Is that supposed to be that way?

I tried restarting the virtual machine several times but it still is asking for password.

I am unable to use XP Mode with either AVG or Avast installed.

It was working fine for years with AVG installed, then all of a sudden whenever XP Mode was used, I'd get a blue screen and the machine would reboot. I uninstalled AVG, XP Mode and Virtual Machine. Reinstalled XP Mode and Virtual Machine and it works fine.
As soon as I reinstalled AVG it did it again.

I've tried the same with Avast and the same thing happens.

Has anyone seen this before?

We are migrating several hundred workstations from XP to Windows 7 Enterprise. We have several legacy and internally developed applications that cannot run under Windows 7 and will be using XP Mode for them. This works well in a test environment. Some of the applications will not work in NAT mode, so bridged mode is required. Our issue is that several of the workstations are in a common area and used by many users. Each time a new user logs on to the host and launches an XP Mode application a new virtual machine is created in that userís profile which acquires a new, unique IP address from DHCP. This behavior introduces all sorts of problems, not least of which is the depletion of addresses in the DHCP scope. We tried putting the original VMC file in the Default user profile to no avail. Is there a way to prevent a new VM from being created for each new user so that all the users on a workstation will use the same virtual machine? Many thanks.

Hi there,
I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I'd be very grateful for any help or ideas!

Hi, Recently my antivirus found numerous trojans in C:/users/name/Temp/Local Folder, and seeing this I manually deleted all of the non-folders and non-.xml files in the Local Folder. Ever since then I kept on getting an error message on startup: "JAVA virtual machine launcherUnable to access .jar file sysboot2486260447034318996.jar" So I googled how to remove this error and came upon this site and the moderator nasdaq, who help resolve a similar problem with another user. In Windows 8 Pro I have created a virtual machine using Win XPSP3. I've tried everything I can to get an internet connection for my VM. I'm not on a network so I've created an external virtual switch. I've tried using both the legacy adapter and a network adapter. I've tried changing the IP address -even tried a DNS address but the best I've achieved so far is "limited or no Connectivity". I also tried Win 7 Home Premium VM with the same result - no internet connection.
The virtual manager should set this up automatically but doesn't so if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them.

I am currently running Windows XP Professional SP2 with all subsequent patches and fixes. Connection to the Internet is via an ADSL modem connected to a 4-port wireless router which serves three laptops and one desktop machine. The Router is secured in that a) DHCP is disabled - all IP addresses are allocated manually, b) Access is restricted to machines whos NIC addresses match an entry in the ACL on the Router and c) 128-bit AES Encryption is enabled. This setup works fine for XP.

Onto this machine I have installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 using which I have created a virtual machine onto which I have installed Vista Ultimate which is working fine.

My question is how do I configure the two machines so that the Guest system (Vista) is able to access the Internet without affecting the ability of the Host machine (XP) to access the Internet in its own right? As all the ports on the Router are in use I assume that I will have to, in some way, tell Vista to use the XP connection (using NAT?)

I am not a networking expert by any means, so can anyone tell me, in simple language, how I should set up the configuration?

Thanks

It's in the VPC configuration, you can either share the NIC or use the NAT option. I share the NIC with my VPC sessions, and I have no problem with the virtual sessions getting to the Internet, or sharing files with other machines on the network.

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). The real annoying part is that even if I exit and close the virtual operating systems and VPC altogether I still can't access the net.

I have unplug my router and modem, reconnect and restart my machine to be able to access.

Anyone know what may be causing the problem and a way around this?

Cheers,

HF.

A:Can't access the internet while running Virtual PC!

It may be that the virtual network adapters are interfering with the performance of the real network adapter. I sometimes have a similar problem in VM and I have to disable the virtual adapters to get it going again.

I've been trying to use connectify to use my laptop as a hotspot.
I have an ethernet connection that my laptop connects to and i want to connect my itouch to the internet via wifi.
I installed connectify and it worked just as it says it should, I can even connect my itouch.
But i never get the internet connection with the itouch.
I've checked and my Atheros wireless adapter is supported and everything seems like it should work, but for some reason it doesn't.

Please help. I have a hunch it's maybe a small little thing that's blocking the internet (possibly a windows sharing setting?).

Here is a GitHub repo https://github.com/magnetikonline/linux-microsoft-ie-virtual-machines which has all the previous download URLs and there is an open issue https://github.com/magnetikonline/linux-microsoft-ie-virtual-machines/issues/14 indicating

Any idea where to get them from, or where an old archive download may be?

Hi all,

I've had this problem since yesterday (5/25/15) and haven't managed to find a fix for it yet. The issue is that although I have internet access--and Google even boots up how it normally would--I am unable to access websites. I am able to search perfectly fine, but the connections "time out" and do not connect. When I decided to troubleshoot, I received "-website name- is online, but network is unable to connect". I am still able to access the internet on my phone and other devices.

Thank you for any and all help!

UPDATE: I now am unable to view the Google homepage on startup with Google Chrome.

Exemple oracle vm virtuelbox dont let me install driver for graphic card like x1650 agp for windows xp and i cannot play to my game silverfall .

Seriousely witch virtuality program can let me play a game with xp or vista without driver problem ? Cause i have a game silverfall for xp or vista. My game are not compatible for windows 7 home .

Maybe somebody have solution with or without virtual box ,maybe better program for virtuel utility exist ?

Maybe you know how play silverfall on windows 7 home ?

How (or without virtual box) and if another virtual box exist for that ?

Thank for help .

A:Virtual graphic on machine virtual .

In Virtualbox's main screen, select your XP machine (do not start it). Click settings. On the left side, click System. On the Motherboard tab, set Base Memory to 1024. On the Acceleration tab, be sure that both boxes are checked. You may need to enter your computer's BIOS and enable its virtualization features. On the left side, click Display. On the Video tab, be sure that Enable 3D acceleration and Enable 2d video acceleration are checked. Click OK to save the changes.Start the XP virtual machine and let it finish booting. Above XP you'll see a menu bar. Click Devices > Install Guest Additions and follow the prompts. You will not be able to install your ATI drivers. Virtualbox is emulating its own set of hardware for Windows XP to use. My instructions will tell Virtualbox to give XP enough resources to run your game.As for the game itself, if it is on a CD, click Devices > CD/DVD Devices and make sure that your CD drive is selected.

I'm busy configuring a fileserver at the moment using winxp pro. It's going to be connected to a lan through a wired connection to a Netgear DG834G router. I wish it to be accessable through the LAN, but I don't wish it to have internet access (with the exception of very few addresses, such as AVG update, spybot update, etc)

This computer isn't going to be used as a workstation at all, and so if something goes wrong, such as the firewall crashing, it won't be noticed. For that reason, as well as blocking massive address ranges through the firewalls advanced rules, I wish also to block the same ranges from within windows. As I understand it, the HOSTS file only deals with outbound traffic, and so I would like to know if there is a foolproof way of blocking these ranges from within windows itself.

Or have I got it all wrong? lol

A:limiting internet access for 1 machine on lan

The right way to do it is to block the addresses from the router. Your router almost certainly has a packet filter in it. In there you specify "allow" rules for the server that let you access the specific IP addresses needed.

The second correct place to do it is the packet filter (or advanced rules or whatever) part of your software firewall. Again, you only give it a few "allow" rules and then put a "deny all" rule in the end.

I have a laptop with a wireless connection to my neighbor's router. I have 2 xp machines and this laptop wired to a hub. I want to allow my xp machines internet access via the laptop, is this possible?

My first problem is that I cannot access my W7 machine using XP, but I can do the opposite. I downloaded and installed the SP3 for my xp's so I have the discovery mapper add-on. I can play my music from my xp and kinda stay happy while this problem persists.

Nothing I have understood and tried from any post on any blog or help page has done any good except downloading the sp3 stuff. I've been at this for 7 hours now and I find this totally ridiculous. Its not worth the trouble. New software should be better in every way. This is unacceptable. No connection made with a wire should ever say Unidentified on it.

And now a rant:
Why is backward compatability so damn hard?
Why can't corporations deal with the fact that not everybody can upgrade all their machines to the new software?
If this is all about sales, just remember how many customers are leaving when you do this. They don't come back.
(To every software maker) If you can't release software that works like logic would dictate, lets send it to the bottom of the ocean...Im sure you've sold enough crap software to pack the oil well hole shut for good.

I posted in another section about my troubles, but was advised to post here, as I may have a malware problem.

I tried running both the DDS and the Gmer scans, but the DDS would hang up every time. I don't have any script blockers running, as far as I know, and turned off the anti-virus just in case.

The Gmer scan worked fine, and the results are attached.

Although the Wireless indicator says I'm connected, no browser or email program can access the internet. I've since removed the USB adapter for now (Netgear Wireless-N WN111v2). I have a recent driver for it, and tried reinstalling it.

I've tried many other things as well, such as resetting the TCP/IP via Microsoft's FixIt tool, to no avail.

I had recently uninstalled Norton 360, and suspect it may have screwed up the Windows Firewall, and perhaps that is keeping my programs from connecting. I can't start the Firewall to make any changes to it. There are several processes, in fact, that won't start (like DHCP and DNS), and the only thing they seem to have in common is dependencies on the TCP/IP Protocol Driver.

When I go to the Device Manager and view hidden devices, that driver is not working, and can't be started.

Please help! Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks
John
