IdeaPad U410 fan not running and overheating

Q: IdeaPad U410 fan not running and overheating

Hi! My U410 gets really hot so that I can barely touch it. And the fan is not running anymore. I noticed that the fan was working less and less in the last couple of weeks. Additionally, the power led is blinking constantly while the computer is running (Its the same blinking as in standby). This started a few days ago.The fan is running nicely when I activate the vacuum cleaner option in the settings. So it looks like the temperature detection and the control of the fan are not working properly. Is there something I can do about this? Best, vrs01

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi dharamc,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.
If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.
If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU

I, too, have had the same issue that users in this thread are reporting. I have a U410 bought in the spring of 2014. There was a break at the hinge and the screen is separating from the lid. I've never dropped the computer, this issue arose one day after general, every day use. I've attached photos of the issue for others to reference.

I am not having a very good repair experience. My exactly (to the date) 1 year Ideapad U410 hinge broke. Was not dropped or put pressure on - just poor workmanship. Sent to the 'authorized' repair centre in NOrth Bay Canada. Turn around time is 7 business days. All I get is a message - waiting for parts.  This is terrible when a large company like Lenovo can't get parts where needed.I am going through a very rough time as my business is affected

Hello! I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I'm running on Windows 8.1. Tonight, certain keys on my keyboard stopped working. These are the: 5, 6, F1, F2, +/=, -/_, home and end keys. The touchsceen keyboard still works, and an extenal keyboard plugged in also works. I have already tried uninstalling the driver and there are no updates available. Prior to this happening, I did have a brief glitch where the number 6 kept slipping in randomly while I typed. I assumed it to be stuck, but, well...now it isn't working at all. Could it be a physical issue with the keyboard? These are pretty random keys to go out all at once.  Thanks very much!

Hi Murtuza,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Does this problem occur on external keyboards? If doesn't, then there is a good chance that you would to get a new keyboard. Or try to reseat the keyboard connector or maybe clean it with some cotton buds to see whether that helps.
Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Ease of Access --> Ease of Access Center
Click on "Change how your keyboard works" --> Under Control the mouse with the  Keyboard
Uncheck the check box "Turn ON Mouse Keys" --> Click on OK.
You can also refer to this thread.

I have a U410, the harddrive failed and has been removed. If I press the Novo button I get a list of options, but none of them appear to do anything. Whatever I select the screen goes dark and the fan runs but then nothing happens. If I startup with a linux USB plugged in then it will boot to the USB, but run very slowly. Why can't I access the BIOS Setup from the Novo button list? Is there a way to troubleshoot the BIOS or motherboard? Using the F2, F12, or combinations with the Fn key won't boot it into BIOS either. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hello all, I am recently having some inconsistent display issues with my Lenovo U410 laptop i7 1TB with a Windows 8 PRO upgrade (came with windows 7).  When I press the Power Button on my laptop to put it to sleep, the Screen turns black as if it is off, but the Power & Battery LEDs on the front of the laptop remain on, as well as the LED on the power button.  However, when I try to wake my laptop, there is no response on the screen (remaining black as if it is off).  The internal fan is running, however I receive no feedback when "blindly" trying to input my password. I've tried to turn the power off and back on to no avail.  I've also removed the power source and held the power button for a couple of seconds and that did not solve the issue either. I've tried connecting the laptop to a screen via HDMI (since there is no other AV port on the device), but there was no signal being sent through.  This is an inconsistent issue that began yesterday 6/11/2013.  When the laptop is left alone for a little and is turned on again, the display works, but after closing the lid (sleep) or pressing the button, the display fails to turn on upon awakening. In most recent circumstances, Today (6/12/2013) I was installing a Windows update that required my computer to restart.  When the update configured perfectly BEFORE it was restarting, but AFTER the restart, my internal fan began to work, but the display was not on. Does...

My kid has been using this laptop and loved it, but mentioned a while ago it was difficult to power it back on after turnned it off. However she managed to work around by putting it in hibernate/sleeping mode only, or recycling the system many times (by holding on power button to force it off). The issue was black screen (no Lenovo logo) but computer was on. I didn't pay much attention because she can still make it work, and I was too busy. Last week, there was a windows update (again) and the computer was forced recycle. It never comes back alive again. The same, computer is humming, but no any visual output on screen, just black. Tried novo button, bootable USB, external monitor, all no use. Check the warranty, just over by 2 months! Asked the service store, to fix will cost at least $200-$300 to replace the motherboard! It does not make sense when spent a bit more could buy a new notebook. But my kid liked it and it does not make sense to throw it away either, when it still looks pretty new and only being used very lightly (schoolwork only). It is sad, especially the brand has been gainning my trust. I probably don't expect a "good" solution either from Lenovo or community, but just throw my frustration here (only because have just registered the account and there is no support email or web form). Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Sorry to hear of all the problems.  Here are a couple of things to try........
First, try a reset of the BIOS.  The procedure can be useful in resolving some hardware conflicts which your computer may have.  Just do this......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
If you are comfortable working inside your laptop. try this........
Try the reset again with the battery removed.
If the reset didn't resolve the problem then you may have a failed piece of hardware preventing the bootup. Remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, memory, wireless card and bluetooth if it is installed. Now try to power up the stripped laptop. With all the hardware removed you should have lights come on and it may possibly beep since there is no memory installed. If the laptop is showing signs of life start adding hardware one piece at a time starting with a memory module and boot up the laptop. If it doesn't power up try the memory in the other slot. Also try the other memory module separately in both slots if two are available. If it is still showing signs of life add another piece and boot. Do this for each item until it doesn't power up again. The last piece of hardware installed is your problem part.

My lenovo Ideapad Y400 has been overheating and shutting down during gaming. The first time this happened when I turned it back on Windows had to do an update (windows 10) I'm pretty sure this was just a coincidence though. This only happens when I'm gaming though and I can usually get it to last longer if I turn the settings to low. I replaced the thermal paste and it actually solved the problem for about 2 weeks without a shutdown and everything worked fine. Before it was shutting off 2-20 minutes into gaming. Just recently it started shutting off again so I decided to make this post.  Here's what I know:My temps run mostly around 40c when idle and 60c when gaming. Most of the time the computer doesn't even feel warm when if happens. My fan speed never really speeds up before it shuts off (or ever actually) even when the computer feels hot the fan sticks to its regular speed. Some people have suggested replacing the thermal pad on the VRAM. Not sure if a thermal pad is the same thing as thermal paste but I'm pretty sure the VRAM wasn't one of the tings I replaced the paste on.I replaced the thermal paste on everything that came with thermal paste (I forget exactly which parts these were but I could find out if it's relevant). There is no way to increase the fan speed on Lenovo's Ideapad models (short of hitting the dust removal feature every 5 seconds). And It wouldn't matter because people who have physically modded their fans and added new ones say it ma... Read more

Hi. Ive recently installed  Linux Mint 18 as part of a dual boot set up on my ideapad y470. The issue i'm having is that the cpu temps are running above 80C when idle on my Linux install. Compared to Windows, i see 50-60C when idle, and around 80C when using chrome. Whats the reason for this overheating? I have tried installing a different kernel as well, but ive concluded that it is not the linux distribution itself, but something hardware related at this point. Any ideas?

My notebook has been experiencing a problem where the screen would go black. Keyboard backlighting still works but everything else doesnt't (sound cuts if it happens wile watching a video or listening to audio). When the screen goes black, nothing I do will bring it back unless I power cycle it by holding down the power button. This only started to happen recently after coming back from a trip where the notebook was used for 8+ hours each day for 5 days (not heavy use; office work and video streaming).  After some troubleshooting, the black screen happens after I hear the fan spin up indicating that the internals are starting to get hot. Once it sounds like the fan has hit maximum rpm, the screen will go out. This sounds like a hardware defect to me, but before I send it in for warranty, I want to see if there's any suggestions on anything else that I can do. I want to avoid warranty for now since I have a big trip coming up in 2 months. Not sure if I'll have the notebook back before then.

Max temperature range is listed as 55-71 degrees Celsius.  Since this is a notebook, I would not worry about current reflected CPU temperature.
You have less than the 15% free space suggested on the Windows partition (C:).  This can be corrected by simply moving large data files (such as videos) from the C: partition to another partition.  You seem to need a larger drive or additional storage, little space is available on your other partitions.
I would immediately uninstall Glary Utilities...it is an optimizer program and BC does not support the use of such.

try compressed air through all the vents and grill to blow any dust out. Also make sure it`s not on anything cloth like a blanket, as that can sometimes get in the way of the cooling from underneath.

Not sure what is wrong with my laptop lately. It's running a lot slower than usual and the fan is going crazy and overheating very quickly.

I've ran virus/malware/spyware scans and they've not picked anything up, so I don't know if it's a virus problem.

I don't know what I'm looking for, so here's my log, if someone could take a look and tell me if everything is OK.

Also if anyone knows of any maintenance/performance programs for Vista, that would be very helpful.

Hey guys, I recently got a new pc and it's been giving me trouble from the start. System hanging, lockups, unexpected BSODs, anything you can think of. I checked out my settings in Speedfan and it definitely seems to be a result of overheating. Here's a screen capture:

Now as you can see most of the temperatures are extremely hot, only CPU/AUX seems to be within a normal range. I am not sure what the exact problem is here, but it seems that most of my system fans are not recognized and/or not turned on. After this picture was taken I managed to get the "Aux0" fan running at a little under 1,000 RPM, but it's a no-go on everything else. I'm not really sure what could be wrong. Fan speeds in BIOS are all set to 100%. BIOS also claims that my GPU fan is running at 6,000+ RPM, but the results say otherwise. Problem is, I didn't put this system together and haven't poked around in the case much, so I don't know if this is a component defect, or not plugged in correctly... I'm at a loss for what to do here, any help?

I just bought a new HP desktop with i7 4770 CPU, running some CPU intensive applications. I see in the task manager, the CPU usage is at 80-85% usage at 3.64GHz only. This CPU is supposed to be running at 3.9GHz turbo, is my CPU defective?

The PC randomly shuts down nearly every hour. Only message I got is "your PC ran into a problem" but there's no other message. It did list 3 files that should be sent to Microsoft for diagnosis but I declined to send them.

A:Overheating? i7 4770 CPU running at only 3.64GHz?

The i7 4770 is actually rated @3.4GHZ and with the turbo boost it can go up to 3.9GHZ. Depending on what application you are running and the number of active cores it uses, it can range from 3.7GHZ - 3.9GHZ.
You can look at the table from this link for more explanation: Intel? Core? i7 Desktop Processor — Intel? Turbo Boost Technology frequency table

If the PC randomly shuts down, it may be due to drivers software that cause the system to crash, faulty memory etc...

Hello hello,

I just recently built a tower for my Christmas present to myself, and being an IT I thought I understood all the components that should go into a system, and I did extensive research into what components should go together and what were the best (affordable) items to put into a PC. So after research I purchased the components, slapped everything together and turned it on. Ran EXCELLENTLY. Everything was flawless and I even got a PC Benchmark program and got a pretty high score. I spent all day installing all of my games I own, and at the end of the night tried out Starcraft 2, went to options, turned everything to the highest settings, highest resolution. Started the Campaign, about 1 minute into gameplay my tower dies. Oooohhhhkay... try it again, gets about 30 seconds further into gameplay, dies again. I tried a different game, dies again. Every game I tried (with the highest setting) would die after a couple minutes of gameplay. I am 90% positive its an overheating issue because the times it would take my tower to die would differ, and then the tower would also turn my display off, while still being on, and would turn itself off (roughly it would take 5-10 seconds). This tells me the tower has indication its too hot and would turn itself off, instead of just powering off the exact second it hits an error.

I ran every game on high settings because I know I can run them on high, the resolution I am not quite sure of because I am using a 23 inch LED TV, not a ... Read more

I'm posting this more as an observation of things I discovered than as a question, but would welcome feedback from others experiencing a similar problem.
At the Black Friday sales I bought a very nice 32" Asus VA32A 2560x1440 WQHD monitor to use with my Dell Precision M4500 i7 laptop. I was replacing a smaller very old Dell monitor that had a considerably lower maximum resolution.
Almost immediately I started experiencing events daily where the screen would turn a nice shade of mauve in pixelated pattern and freeze, requiring a hard reboot. This had happened on very rare occasions before, but not often enough to investigate. Now it was a constant problem and everything I read online told me it was an overheating issue and not to ignore it as it could destroy the computer.
First recommendation was to clean the dust out of the fan area. Being an old computer there was a lot. I took out the fan/heat sinks cleaned the input and output screens as well as the fan itself meticulously and put it all back together. No benefit; still overheating.
I figured maybe I had accidentally removed come of the thermal grease so took it apart again and replaced the grease where it was previously. Same result - still overheating.
I then bought a cooling fan for under the laptop and made sure that the laptop's own monitor was turned off when the case was closed (I use an external wireless keyboard for this setup... Read more

NO CPU usage (0-3%). NO disk usage. NO scan running. I updated Windows and the BIOS, and I even chose the Power Saving mode. Still the fan runs constantly - at low speed, but enough to get me irritated. Any help will be much appreciated. Otherwise the pc goes back! \

I've just got my laptop back from lenovo where they replaced the hard drive as they deemed it a faulty hard drive causig the problem. I have spent a day reinstalling all the updates for windows and now its still doing it. The problem is that whenever the computering running it seems to run upto 100% and go red in the task manager under the processing section. It seems to happen to the system or Avast Anti-virus or somethimes google chrome but it only eer seems to go to 4.5mb/s which as far as im aware it shouldnt be doing just running windows. At other times it can be at 5.0mb/s whilst running a different application but only at 30% or so. I have disabled link power manageent in the intel rapid storage software as suggested by lenovo support. I thought i't could just be a poor hard drive that they use on this model of laptop but I don't know for sure. Attached is a screenshop of the problem im trying to explain. If anyone has suggestions that could hep me I would really appreciate it. - Gecko

Hey guys, I just bought a new ideapad 110 (Window 10 Pro) few days ago and it is running smoothly. Yesterday, I upgraded the laptop with new 16GB DDR4 RAM (total 20gb RAM). When i'm running the laptop with battery, it lasted for only 2 min and it get auto shutdown without warning (like someone unplug the power source). Battery is showing 79%. Checked with HWMonitor and the temperature looks normal and the fan is running, so i guess it is not due to overheating. There is no problem with the AC power ON.  Any idea why this happen? Please help.

HiI have just brought an ideapad 310-15ABR (A10-9600p version), a model with 4GB soldered to the board and 1 slot with a 4GB ram module fitted. According to the technical specifications here: http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Lenovo%20Laptops/ideapad%20310%20(15_),%20310%20(15_%20Touch... this computer is capable of running in dual-channel mode. However, when I run speccy it reports the memory is running in single channel. There appears to be no option in the bios to change this and as the motherboard only has one slot for ram I am at a loss as to how I can get it running in dual-channel mode. Can someone advise me please? thanks

Hi everybody, I bought a new IdeaPad v310-15ikb, I have been using it for one week and I realized that fun is running all the time, although CPU usage is low (~5%) and its temperature is also ok (36°C, HWMonitor). The fun speed and noise that it does is not big but still audible, it starts quickly after switching on and never stops entirely. I installed the latest bios update yesterday, nothing changed so far. I would like to know if it is normal and I need to accept it (I don't want to return the laptop, I like it otherwise) or if there is a way how to solve it / control the fan speed. Thank everybody in advance.

I just got the 4K Lenovo Ideapd 720s about two weeks ago and today has it has been running the fan on high... or at least so high I can hear it quit well and I am not even using it all all (it didn't use to do this at all until today)... I do have external 4K monitor hooked up to it but the laptop is not in use.... so why is fan running so high for past 2 hours now... is this normal? I took screenshot of CPU usage and included it below... I have very bad luck with electronics I just hope this thing isn't defective!? Thanks for any input!! PS: I don't think fan is running at highest... but it's definfiftely running higher than it ever has for such prolonged time especially when the laptop is not even being used!

If you have anything configured for automatic updating (especially Windows) or have automatic scanning scheduled (anti-virus?) that may be what is happening.

Hi guys,I bought a new 510-15IKB (i5-7200U type). It came with DOS, I installed win10 and configured everything, installed drivers etc. My problem is the fan, it keeps working constantly in idle, even on battery, on battery saver mode, so it just totally neglects the energy management settings (passive cooling, etc.) and CPU temps (34 Celsius and the fan keeps working). The fan is working in its lowest state (maybe, never heard it be quieter), so the problem is not a loud fan, rather that the fan never turns off during idle. I'm an IT guy, I know how to make things work etc, but this just can't be solved by me.What I tried:- Restart etc.- Reinstall drivers from support page downloads- Install newest drivers from parts manufacturers (intel etc.)- Set different energy management settings- Updated UEFI to newest version- updated win10 totally- even tried it using an Ubuntu live session and it is the same And there is a strange buzzing sound on movement if it is perpendicular to the surface of the fan, it's really quiet, but happens on smaller movements too, and it even happened once while the laptop was completely still on the table. This part of my problem might be totally normal, so my bigger problem is with it not turning off. What could be done?
