Finding per-user disk usage using powershell

Q: Finding per-user disk usage using powershell

Hi All,
I have to find the disk utilization as per user using powershell.
I can do this with UI like -:
1) Right Click on This PC.

2) Go to properties from drop down and go to advanced settings

3) Click on User profile's setting then we can see the users and there usage.
Now I want to do this programmatically.
I've requirement like if a particular user usage is more than 2GB space then he should get automatic email trigger.
How can we do this with powershell?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I manage all backups on our home computers and no one seems to understand that personal files scattered across several disks leads to lost person information. I have two disks C: & D: I want to force all user files to be saved to D: only. All user accounts are created on C: and whenever a document is saved, by default, it is saved in the C:\users\user name\Documents folder. I would like to change this so that all documents would be saved automatically, by default, to D:\/users\user name\Document folder. Can this be done, if so how?

I work in an enterprise environment, where I manage a lab of 75 computers. I use Ghost to image and then I walk the computers afterwards to change the PC names and SIDs.

I am implementing a script to automatically add the computers to the domain but I am new to PowerShell and would really appreciate the help. Here's the script I'm using, 1.ps1:

Param (
[String]$User = $(Throw "MYDOMAINUSERINFO"),
[String]$Domain = "MYDOMAININFO",
[String]$PathToCred = "C:\OMC\AutoPost"
#Make sure our path string has a trailing backslash
If ($PathToCred[$PathToCred.Length - 1] -ne "\")
{ $PathToCred += "\"
#Now create file string
$File = $PathToCred + "JoinDomain-$User.crd"
#And find out if it's there, if not create it
If (-not (Test-Path $File))
{ (Get-Credential).Password | ConvertFrom-SecureString | Set-Content $File
#Load the credential file
$Password = Get-Content $File | ConvertTo-SecureString
$Credential = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PsCredential($User,$Password)
#Add the computer to the domain
Add-Computer -DomainName $Domain -Credential $Credential

I run this script using a batch file that I place in the startup folder.

Powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass C:\OMC\AutoPost\1.ps1 -User MYDOMAINUSERINFO -Domain MYDOMAININFO -PathToCred C:\OMC\AutoPost\

Wondering if anyone in this forum can help me figure out what I am doing wrong with my script. I am grabbing a text file with a list of users in it. I want to then create folders for all those people and then set explicit permissions on those folders to only allow the users and admin access to it. So for the create user folder, I have...

$Users = Get-Content "C:\Users.txt"
ForEach ($user in $users)
$newPath = Join-Path \\mycomputer\Users$ -childpath $user
New-Item $newPath -type directory

This works great as I now have 100 folders created. But how do I use something like....

$acl = Get-Acl "\\mycomputer\users$"
$permission = "mydomain\$users","FullControl","Allow"
$accessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission
$acl | Set-Acl \\mycomputer\users$\$user

When I try to loop these together it says the folder already exists or the setaccessrule identity references could not be translated.

Anyone know how I loop it in with creating the folder? Or is there a way to just say...create folder based on this username, then take that username and make it the only admin on the folder along with the system admin??

A:powershell script to create user folders and set permissions

answered my own problem...but maybe someone can help me out from here. This works for creating folders and setting permissions.

$Users = Get-Content "C:\Users.txt"
ForEach ($user in $users)
$newPath = Join-Path "\\myserver\Users$" -childpath $user
New-Item $newPath -type directory

$acl = Get-Acl $newpath
$permission = "mydomain\$user","FullControl","Allow"
$accessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission
$acl | Set-Acl $newpath

Anyone know how I would then look at an old server with user folders and do a stare and compare between the old and the new ones I just created? And once I find a folder that matches I want to grab all the contents in the old server and robocopy it over to the new server.

I was having a lot of trouble creating a local user account with a powershell script.
Basically, the script would throw no errors, but the account would not be shown in "Control Panel\User Accounts\Manage another user account"

It would seem that the user.create functionality of ADSI doesn't work the same way in win 8 as it did in win 7.
I finally figured out that the accounts had been created, but they weren't a member of "Users" by default, and when they weren't a member of users, they didn't show up in the control panel.

Script Local User Management Module

Run the script above, and then run the following two commands:
New-localuser -username "newuser" -password "123456" -description "created by powershell"
Set-Localgroup -username "newuser" -groupname "Users" -add

That should create the new user account, and add it to the Users group, so it is visible and can be used.

Good Morning.
I managed to have a bootable USB stick running WinPE with storage support.
I run the get-disk, get-partition and any "reading" cmdlet with no problems.
When I try to "write" on the disk, let's say, when I want to create a new partition, the cmdlet simply does nothing.
I run the new-partition cmdlet after having double checked the parameteres and the powershell runs for about 1 second and returns to the prompt.
No error messages. Simply it returns to the prompt.
When I check for the new partition, the powershell simply has done nothing.
The unused space is still there an no partintion has been created.
I see the same behaviour with all the other "writing" cmdlets, such as resize-partition.
Could you please help me to figure out what am I missing?
Many thanks for your kind help

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.

A:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... My laptop is running Windows 7 Premium Home edition. Is there a way to figure out what downloaded to my computer on a specific day and/or figure out what web site and/or program used large amounts of data on a specific day within a time range? I recently had three days with unusual spikes in data usage on my internet plan, but I can't figure out what actually sucked up the data. I did not download any movies, did not stream any shows, and the data spike does not correspond with the timing of the most recent Windows update. I have not (knowingly) done anything outside of my "normal" internet behaviors. I am stumped.

Hello all....LONG time visitor/reader....first time poster. This one has me stumped. I have a Gateway laptop...Windows XP home. My computer recently had ANTIVIRUS 2009 after my friend borrowed and got it infected. It was terrible, but it was able to connect to the net still. I downloaded and installed and ran Malwarebytes and it immediately found the rogue program. It finished and I proceeded to remove it with the program. It restarted and poof it was gone. Now, Windows will NOT recognize any wireless networks or connect to any wifi internet connections. The device manager sees that the card is turned on and working properly. My other PC still recognizes the network and connects just fine and dandy. But not the "fixed" laptop. Hello everyone. I joined the forum today and hope you can help me out. On my work desktop I am running Windows 7 and I want to upgrade PowerShell version 2.0 to 4.0 as a minimum or 5.0. I've read many articles on fixing Windows PowerShell issues but my case seems to be a little different.

To begin, I have the following prerequisites on my computer:
Windows 7 SP1
.NET 4.5
Here is the list of all .NET versions on my computer:

v3.0 3.0.30729.5420 SP2
v3.5 3.5.30729.5420 SP1
Client 4.6.01055
Full 4.6.01055

The version of PowerShell that I have access to is 2.0. When I try to install Windows Management Framework 4.0 (x64: Windows6.1-KB2819745-x64-MultiPkg.msu) I get the following message: "Update for Windows (KB2819745) is already installed on this computer." but when I look for it in "View installed updates" or "Uninstall or change a program", it doesn't show up. I've done searches for it on my computer and came up empty. Powershell does not show up in my "All Programs" list, Program Files / Program Files (86) or its Common Files, or in the local or roaming user files. The only place I see remnants of it such as the powershell.exe file is within C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-powershell-exe_31bf3856ad364e35_7.3.7601.933_none_3989ef6dcae7e4a9 and a few other folders like it within the winsxs directory. I found a APC BACK-UPS 500, model #BK500MUS, in the office I'm working at, and naturally the user manual has been lost for it. The manual they provided is for the CS version of the BK500, but mine is not the tower version.

Now I want to find it on a windows 7 computer but I don't know how. I simply can't remember how I got to the settings in xp.
NOTE: by user management tool, I do not mean the user accounts page in control panel.

A:Need help finding user management tool.

Do you mean the hidden Windows Administrator account?  If so please see this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/enable-disable-windows-administrator-account/

My niece's machine - generic ordered online.

Started a couple of days ago. Trying to open either IE or FF browsers were a very faint image - unable to access anything online. Thought of restoring an image using the Macrium boot disk, but the "boot" image on the screen lacked all restore information.
She called Verizon tech support and he told her the modem (FIOS is unavailabe) was bad and sent a router. I connected it, but got the same results.
Finally, I decided to try reinstalling Win7 - did not see the install disk . Disconnected the original C: drive and jumped another in its place - the disk began loading and all looked good until I to the page that asked for user name and password. She had misplaced the original info.
Calling verizon I got a "tech support", after having an hour trying to understand him and try his efforts to get the machine setup, I gave up.
My question; are ISPs required to give one his/her user id and password when requested? If not, the only alternative is to change ISPs.

A:Problem finding user id and password

I assume this PC works fine, other than that you can't get online with it?

Re Verizon support: you say "I gave up".

Was there a language barrier and you literally could not understand him due to his lack of English language skills?

Was he possibly competent in English, but could not explain how to pour water out of a boot?

Was he possibly competent in English and gave possibly accurate information, but you couldn't follow it for some reason? If so, what was that reason?

Or did he appear to be unwilling to provide instructions as if he feared you were unauthorized and trying to break into someone else's account?

Is your only problem the lack of user ID and password? That is, if you had them, would you know how to resolve your problem?

Is Verizon the only game in town?

More info needed.

My laptop (Lenovo Y500 Laptop | Lenovo US) has a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive C: and it also has a 24GB chached SSD D:. The link only shows a 16, but mine was 24. Today, I left my computer idle while I was at class (I'm in college) and when I came back it was frozen on the start up screen Lenovo Logo. As customary with computer problems, I turned it off and turned it on again. It booted up fine, maybe the tiniest bit slow, but nothing really different from the norm. But, when I opened up Chrome, my entire computer froze up after about five seconds, and I had to force shut down. This happened about 10 times (not just with Chrome, but with explorer and Task Manager too). Weird thing is, I only got one BSOD, for MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. When it magically started up without immediately freezing after the first click, I scanned for viruses--nothing changed. I CCleaned the temp files and registry--still nothing. I checked for fragmentation--0% fragmented. Once I finally got Task Manager open, I started thoroughly checking all the tabs. Here's what I found:
Attachment 51822
See how Disk 1 has C: AND D: ? I'm 100% sure that D: used to be on Disk 0. After some more freezing and rebooting, I discovered that Disk 1 maxes out active time to 100% really, really easily. Average response time maxed over 1000. Actually, I'm surprised my computer hasn't frozen since I started typing this post. It's that bad.

I have not done a restore point because I thought it probably wouldn't help, since I haven't ins... Read more

I have a Toshiba TE2000 with valid PID.

Using this site as a reference, I have tried the Windows XP Professional OEM "WXPOEM_EN" label twice, because everything that I have read has said that the OEM versions are the most versatile. But the install fails because XP doesn't like the PID.

But doing trial & error on XP installs is time consuming, and I was wondering if there was a way of decoding the PID sticker in order to determine which XP label will work with this PID.

I've done extensive Google (and other search engine) searches on all of the text on the label, to no result. Nor have I been able to find any kind of reference that explains what the various codes mean (X08-73066, E85-01144, etc...), so any help there would be appreciated.

Also I'm interested in learning more about what the "1 - 2 CPU" means, and also that with this PID you can install either Win2000 Pro, or XP Pro.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Help Finding the Right XP Pro Disk ?

So what exactly is your problem. Are you wanting to reinstall but you lost your OS disc? I would call Toshiba and ask them if they can send a replacement. They will charge you a couple of bucks to do so but it will be cheaper than buy it new. To use those Product keys you will probably need an OEM OS disc.

XP Pro and 2000 Pro can run on a dual processor machine.

I am not sure where this goes so please feel free to move it or tell me where to post it lol.

I am trying to find a recovery Disk for an Emachine computer we just acquired. I already tried to contact Emachine for it & they said they do not manufacture that disk any more & just told me to buy a new OS & find the drivers online. Which wouldnt be a problem but the 60 bucks for a new Windows XP disk is more then the PC is worth lol.

Figured I would ask here, see if someone happens to have one laying around they wouldnt mind selling to me or letting me have for cheap.

Oh & we tried to use our Windows XP disk with the OEM number on the Emachine, but it now wont register or anything & of course I figured out that that is a no no.. Is there a such thing as a Non-OEM Number containing disk that you can buy & use to reinstall windows w/ the computers OEM number?

Btw. the Emachine is model # W3050

Thanks again!

I've recently tried out Windows 2012 Data Deduplication and due to an error I could not retrieve all my files.
I'm trying to find all of the files on the disk that say they have a file size but when you look under "Size on disk" it says it takes up 0 Bytes.

I've tried sorting the files by Size and by Space used. I've searched using Windows Explorer with size:empty but am coming up with nothing.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I took a look into Sparse file utility but it turns out these files aren't sparse files.

EDIT: I've also tried chkdsk but it reports that there are no errors on the drive.

I says something similar to no useable drive or something similar. (I do not have the screen in front of me) The list is empty. You have the options of opening a command prompt, advanced repair options, or load drivers. From what I see I need to

Exactly the same problem - Acer Aspire One.
I was having performance problems and ran chkdsk which found some bad clusters. Next thing I know, I restart and Windows won't come up. I could get a cmd prompt going and copied out my files and reset the system. Still nothing. Finally got it going by turning it on and plugging in a recovery flash drive. Completely reinistalled 8.0. Installed 126 updates. Installed 8.1. Installed 26 updates. And now I'm smack in the 100% disk usage.
Tried setting Virtual Memory, which was small.

To make a long story short > I was trying to copy my laptop HDD and then install dual boot on the new HDD but gave up after I concluded my USB external enclosure only supported 128GB and not the 250GB that I needed (New external eclosure on order to solve this problem).

But somehow when I now boot up with my original HDD I get the error

Error finding BTMAGIC.IMG
Run BootMagic install
Press a key
(I press a key)

And everthing is ok - WXP loads correctly so that good.

BUT >> the question is how do I now get rid of this error. I don't want a dual boot on this HDD so I don't want to install bootmagic.
ANother question I could use help with is Partition Magic makes a rescue floppy but I don't have a floppy disk on my Laptop how do you get around this ?

Can anyone please help me with this?

My problem is that I have just bought a new system running vista after the old one died following a motherboard problem (it refused to boot). I have salvaged the old hard disk which ran XP and it appears to be sound and I have put it in an external enclosure connected to the new computer. I want to retrieve/access old mail folders created in MS Outlook 2003 on the old hard disk but cannot seem to locate them anywhere.

Any suggestions as to how I can get to and open them please?

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows 8 on my laptop (I've named my laptop Romulus for future reference in this thread). First off, let me give you a brief history on Romulus' journey thus far:

1.) Bought pre-built from ACER with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
2.) After playing around with it for a bit, I formatted the C drive (deleting all partitions) and installed Windows 7.
3.) Hoping to test out the new Windows 8.1, I reinstalled Windows 8 (a clean install from Microsoft this time... not the original bundled version from ACER). I have yet to install 8.1.

This is where I've noticed a few problems. Specifically, my CPU and Disk usage keep spiking to 100% for no apparent reason. Literally right after booting Romulus, before running any programs/apps, I see these spikes. I boot up, go straight to the desktop, fire up Task Manager, and watch sadly as the performance graphs tease me with those tall lines. The CPU spikes only last for a second or two and usage generally stays pretty low, but I'd still like to know why it's jumping like that. Disk usage spikes to 99-100% more frequently and stays there a bit longer. I've noticed perhaps very slight performance problems and some mouse lag, but I haven't been able to prove a correlation here.

Regarding drivers, these problems arose without any drivers installed (straight Windows 8 installation). Thinking the obvious, I installed all of Romulus' drivers listed on the ACER web page for this model, but the problems persist... Read more

Hi m7mdshaban,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can try to chek the integrity of your storage drive by running diagnotics test. This is to ensure that the issue is not hardware related from  other software faults such as full disc, running backup storage (cloud synching process) full disc space, security threats, and others.
Compare it the test with other diagnostics test or better yet use a known good harddrive to test.
Update us how it goes.

I would start by following the directions in this thread about removing the Upgrade stuff to see if that helps: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2066-windows-old-folder-delete-windows-10-a.html  Method 1: refer to the link below to troubleshoot some common reasons for Windows freezing. Windows hangs or freezeshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286 Follow all the steps given and check if the issue is resolved. Method 2: Optimize the hard disk Optimizing the hard disk usually clears up such issues. Refer to the link below to learn how to optimize the hard disk. Improve performance by optimizing your hard drivehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/improve-performance-optimizing-hard-drive Further reference: Optimize your hard drivehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/optimize-hard-drive#1TC=t1  Final option : Try to use CCleaner, this program removes unnecessary application/programmes/files from your local drive.
