Upgrade memory and capacity in Lenovo Thinkpad X220

Q: Upgrade memory and capacity in Lenovo Thinkpad X220

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, first time posting on the Lenovo boards but I have been a ThinkPad user for about 5 years now. Probably will never go back to regular laptops!  I'm currently using a X220 (4286CTO) bought in Sept. 2011 and I'm looking to upgrade the laptop in a few ways so I can continue to use it well. Some relevant specs/system information?  i5-2540M @2.6GHz 4.0GB x 1  of RAMWindows 7 Professional 64bit BIOS version 1.40 (14/5/2015) 270 GB HDD Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 Wi-Fi AdapterMy questions: What is the max amount RAM/max speed RAM my machine can support and what are some trusted/compatible memory sticks you guys have used or are using in your X220? Should I buy another 4GB x 1 stick or go for a new set of 4GB x 2 sticks? I want to install a mSata SSD. What are some compatible/reliable mSata SSDs that would be good and what is the max storage/speed SSD that would work? I tried to research online some about Sata II vs Sata III and I did not really understand it. Should I just get a regular SSD and replace my HDD?Random question for X220 users: do you guys still have the palmrest crack issue near the touchpad where the lid closes? My palmrest has gotten replaced 3 times specifically for that problem by warranty and now it's inevitably happened again but my warranty has run out, lol. A:Lenovo ThinkPad X220 General Upgrade Information (RAM/SSD)

Hi and welcome, heyArhumGlad to see ThnkPad and x220 lover 1. x220 supports up to 2x8 GB RAM installed. With BIOS up to v.1.28 it supports 1333 Mhz memory by default (by design) and memory 1600 Mhz w/o issues. With 1866 Mhz memory some issues might appear, depending on the memory stick manufacturer, model, parametersStarting with BIOS v.1.29 using not designed memory type is locked.2. x220 mSATA slot supports SATA II interface. There are no SATA III lines of laptop chipset in that interface. So, use any mSATA drive, on your choice - capacity, budget, vendor..., not in the m.2 formfactor (!). Intel, Plextor, Crucial, Corsair, Samsung, Kingston... Not NoName and OCZ. Of course, most mSATA III drives are back compatible with mSATA II slots. The choosing between mSATA + HDD and regular 2.5" SSD drives depends on the storage capacity you need, laptop usage profile.3. I don't know about palmrest cracking issue despite the fact I contacted with hundreds of the x220 owners, since the beginning of 2011. I'm sure there might be a bit trouble with parts fixing under palmrest, their routine. There was the single case I remember - the user has breaked it himself due to the impact.

Friends from Lenovo,I write you because, on August 12th, 2016, trying to install the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update, I had to do a reboot of my notebook and in the process, I lost most of the programs and drivers that use my notebook to work properly. I already installed most of the drivers I lost that day, but I still haven`t found and install the correct driver for the hotkeys of my notebook. So far, I have tried with the files r09vu09w and 8jvu43ww, but none of that files is the correct one for my ThinkPad X220 notebook, which I bought in the year 2012. Therefore, I need to ask you if you could tell me how can I get, download the CORRECT hotkey file for my notebook, so I could download it and install it on my Lenovo notebook. Friends from Lenovo, could you please tell me how can I get the correct hotkey file for my notebook Lenovo ThinkPad X220, in order to download it and install it on my notebook?THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP!!!! Yours truly,Cristián Palau

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

Planning to update the HDD of my old Lenovo, consolidating the 350GB HDD + 250GB mSATA SSD into a single 500GB SSD, with the benefit of making it working on a SATAIII interface instead of the SATAII of the x220 mSATA slot. Since in these 6 years of usage I never reinstalled the Windows 7 I'm wondering if will be beneficial also to reinstall a new Win10. X220 is not listed in the Lenovo certified systems working with W10 Creators Update, wanted to know if I will probaly face troubles and also if I will nedd to install using some custom Lenovo installer.

Hi, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and my C drive (windows drive) corrupted yesterday. I cannot get to Lenovo Recovery to restore my C drive because the C drive was totally corrupted. I use linux bootable usb to try to access my hard drive, the C drive was corrupted, no data can be read, but the Recovery Partition (Q:\) was fine. I try to re-install my Thinkpad using the same OS (Windows 7 Pro-64 Bit) using the product key inside the battery slot to see if my hard drive fails or not, but the Windows that I reinstalled was fine until now. The Recovery Partition was still there, with different Letter path (changed to D:\) and whatever inside the recovery partition was hidden but the partition was 10GB used, so I think what inside the partition was hidden. My question is:1. Can I use my Recovery Partition again to factory reset my Thinkpad?2. Can I use the Recovery Partition with the Lenovo Rescue & Recovery apps that I download from Lenovo Website? Thank you, I still need My Thinkpad X220 eventhough I already have newer Lenovo laptop. Your help is much appreciate.

Hi everyone, first post here!
My laptop is currently causing me some aggravation regarding fast startup. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 I have upgraded to Windows 8 and then 8.1 and an SSD and up to now has been performing flawlessly.
Recently, with the fast startup option enabled, the computer has been shutting itself off completely after the startup animation and requires the power button pressing again before it will boot up, in 'normal startup' speed.
I have tried disabling and re enabling fast startup, using the 'powercfg -h off' and 'powercfg -h on' commands to recreate the hiberfil.sys file and that's about all I can think of. It still behaves the same, turning itself off completely immediately after the startup animation.
Anyone got any ideas to resolve this?

A:Fast startup causing problems - Lenovo Thinkpad X220

Fast startup has worked a couple of times in the meantime - I swapped the wireless card yesterday and reinstalled some drivers to resolve some unrelated issues and it started working again. Yay! I thought - but after the first couple of goes it started doing the same thing again and shutting off after the animation!

He there,
I found a couple of similar threads, but I could not solve my problem yet.
Since a bought this laptop almost a year ago I have random system chrashes with a "Driver Power State Failure".
Sometimes it seems especially when I use lots of programms at the same time and always when the computer automatically goes to "sleep" or "poer save mode" (or when I close the lid).
What can I do to solve the problem or where is the problem exactly?

Kind regards

Yes, you can buy an ultrabay caddy and put a HDD or SSD there as well, the drives in the caddy can be up to 12.5mm heigth. A caddy look like this: click here

In my opinion it would make more sense to put the SSD in the internal bay and the HDD in the caddy, not the other way around.I

Is there any way I can upgrade this cheaply?
If not, can I use all my cards on a newer Vista box? (Firewire, Gigabit etc)

A:Upgrade memory capacity?

What is the Service tag number on your PC?

or you could go to www.crucial.com and let it scan your PC. It should then tell you (1) what you currently have, (2) what your upgrade options are.

Moving the add-on cards from your current PC to a new PC should be fairly easy as long as you keep in mind:
1. what types of slots the cards need
2. if the new PC has enough of these types of slots
3. if you have the drivers for all those cards saved on CD or can get them online from their manufacturers BEFORE you move them to the new PC.

Ok, so I bought my Yoga 910 (4k/i7/16gb/512ssd) just a few days ago and, besides the fan noise (which I am currently working on) as well as recently discovering the issue I am about to discuss, I absolutely LOVE this machine! It is a workhorse and the build quality is amazing. That's saying a lot coming from a previous Mac user... Anyway, I was looking around today while trying to get the fan issue resolved and I noticed that the Full Charge Capacity (FCC) of the battery is only 75410mwh, while the actual Designed Capacity is meant to be 78000mwh. It is about a 4% performance decrease basically right out of the box, is that normal? I only ask because I originally bought the FHD/i7/8gb/256ssd version, before exchanging it for the upgraded unit due to liking it so much, and noticed that the FCC on the original one was actually 80102mwh, quite a bit higher than the designed capacity. Not sure if there is a setting preventing the PC to charge to the full amount or what? Maybe I just got a battery with lower ratings? Any help would be MUCH apppreciated!

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

A:Thinkpad G40 memory upgrade

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

Hello, I have a new x1 extreme gen 2 Part No: 20MFCTO1WW with 16 GB DDR4 2666MHz. I would like to go to 32 or 64 GB if I can.  Could anybody suggest what memory I should buy and where? Thanks in advance, Ricky

A:ThinkPad X1 Extreme memory upgrade?

You can have up to 64GB (2 X 32GB).  The part numbers for the 32GB SODIMMs are 01AG871 or 01AG861.  Other configurations are possible depending on thether you have 2 X 8GB or 1 X 16GB and what you want to end up with,

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 since many years and it is still one of the best laptop compared to those available in the market. I have successfully upgraded in the past my HD with a 256 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO (MZ-7KE256BW). Now I would like to replace this HD with the newest 1 TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO SERIES 1TB SATA3 MZ-76P1T0B/EU.Someone know if there could be problems of compatibility? P.S. the operative system was windows 7 but I moved subsequently to windows 10. Thank you in advance for your reply.

Welcome to the forum!

There's no hard drive size limit on your machine - so if you want to put in 500GB, go ahead. The same holds true for the drive speed - your choice.

Any 9.5 mm laptop SATA drive - including SATA II - will work fine, but you'd need a modded BIOS to utilize the SATA II speeds on your machine.

T9600 will not work. T7700 should.

Your machine can handle 4GB of RAM for sure. And yes, if both slots are populated, it works in dual channel mode.

You could upgrade the screen to SXGA+ (1400x1050) or UXGA (1600x1200) that were used on T60/p generation.

Enjoy the upgrade process.

Hi guys and/or girls, I am working on upgrading a business laptop which happens to be the Lenovo Thinkpad T410, now im putting an 250GB 850 Evo to replace the INSANELY SLOW HDD, however i am also upgrading the system from windows 7 and upgrading the RAM, now here is where i need help, I am going to be installing a 2x4GB kit of Corsair Vengence SODIMM, however I am unsure whether i should go for the DDR3 1600 kit or the DDR3L 2133 kit, now these are both the same price so the obvious pick would be the DDR3L due to the lower power draw and higher frequency, but the current memory installeld is only 1333, however the laptop is documented to work with 1600 so i know this isn't a problem, however I am unsure if it would even correctly downclock the 2133 or would it simply refuse to post, as well as this, would the laptop still attempt to send 1.5v to the memory or will it automatically do 1.35v as required by the DDR3L, oh how i do wish laptops all offered an "advanced" section within the BIOS which would allow me to tweak all of this stuff, however the only thing the bios lets me do with memory is set an extended mem test during boot which obviously is no help.  Thanks for your help

Your memory spec:2GB or 4GB std / 8GB max / PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3, non-parity,dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets; The 8GB max is two 4GB sticks not one 8GB stick.

Hi everyone. I was looking to upgrade my SSD in my X1 and was looking at the Samsung 850 Evo 500GB 2.5 inch SSD. Does anyone know if this SSD is compatible with the X1 or if it will fit? Thank you!

A:Lenovo X1 (1st Generation) ThinkPad SSD Upgrade

No x1 laptops don't use 2.5 drives so that won't work, idk what exactly it uses but it looks like a m.2 ssd but idk what type of M.2 it supports if it does normal M.2 or pci-e version

Hello everyone! Is it possible to add an NVIDIA GeForce 940M GPU adapter to this laptop? There is a version of the T450 model equipped with that GPU. Is it soldered to the motherboard or it is an additional card? If it's soldered, is it possible to add one or the motherboard design of my computer is different? Best regardsPavlin Petkov

A:How to upgrade lenovo thinkpad R500 CPU

Welcome to the forum!

The easiest is to download the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can get from here: click me!) and follow the instructions from page 107 onwards. Take a look at the printed page # of the document, not the one your PDF viewer says.

I am a "techno-phobe"- and a "Have No Clue" when it comes to computers.

On another site- someone told me that I could upgrade my laptop by changing out the CPU and hard drive. I went to the Lenovo site to try to get prices, etc- but there is NOTHING of the sort on the site. Only a warning about VOIDING your WARRANTEE.... but I'm already "out of warranty".

Is this possible ? Is this practical ? THANKS

I was wondering whether somebody could shed some light on this issue. I am (as many more I guess) suffering from memory shortcut on my S440. Now I just stumbled uppon a new upgrade option from Curcial:http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct204864bf160b Is this module compatible with a S440 i7 4500u? BIOS might be an issue as far as I read.

Solved!

A:Thinkpad S440 16GB memory upgrade

No,  It won't work and the problem isn't the BIOS or a Lenovo limitation.  You have a 4th gen CPU  i7-4500u.  The 16GB modules only work on 5th gen or later
