computer speed and internet speed

Q: computer speed and internet speed

This problem confuses me. We've been experiencing slower than normal internet speeds recently. We have Verizon DSL, only 3300 down. Lately we've been getting way lower speeds. I just checked using Verizon's speedtest and it came out as 72 Kbps down and 712 Kbps up.

We have two laptops. Mine is 1.6GHZ with 1GB RAM and hers is a slower 1.2 celeron w/ 1GB RAM. Both running XP. I've tried both wired and wireless.

Speakeasy gives me 292 down and 615 up. Now, beyond the fact that it should be faster down than up, look how slow it is down,.

I've done all the tweaks etc I was on with tech support and they sent a tech today and unfortunately I wasn't home but my GF was. He checked the lines inside and out said there was no problem with the lines.

Using his faster laptop he got a decent 2800 down. When she plugged in her Asus netbook same thing. The tech said the slow speeds were due to the slow computers

Now I know that our machines aren't the fastest and I know that internet speed when it hits your machine is dependent upon cpu speed, but I know we shouldn't be getting such low speeds.

When I lived elsewhere and had cable internet, my current laptop got speeds close to what my cable company said I should be getting. So I am doubting the tech guy even even though the two other laptops got better speeds.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer was running just fine til about a week ago. I am on a secure network that was before yielding 1/mb/sec download speeds on wireless router. I have tested the network on my laptop and it still runs just fine, however my desktop has become sluggish, the download speeds are down to 30kb/sec and the search function has been taken over by "searchfastfind.net" that Malware Bytes has failed to find. Today the internet would simply die and not reconnect, or my browser would redirect to dead sites. The CPU on any processes doesn't seem high, but my computer is screaming like it's running several programs at once. I am using Vista, all updates installed that are available and needed.

What would I do to figure out the sort of malware I suspect this to be?

Only had this new pc a few weeks and it is so slow now after 3 blue screen of death crashes that caused this I think, I believe firefox caused. I am not sure how to read dump files to show you details of the BSOD. I am including details of my PC along with the hijack this log, my system is clean though according to antispyware and virus scans.

I installed 64bit before this 32bit one on another partition of this HDD but cannot boot into it anymore at startup because this PC won't let me select it because it does not detect my keyboard in DOS mode for some weird reason.

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Hi, I may be missing something pretty basic here as my tech knowledge is pretty poor. I have recently paid my internet provider to increase my connection speed from 1meg package to 4meg as I need a faster connection. Ive done a speed test and it says that my speed is pretty much what the service provider has promised but when I use the wifi in my place (which I used with the original 1 meg connection) it doesnt seem any faster at all. I thought I'd be flying from one website to the next but its not happening that way at all. Someone said I should consider buying an aircard to increase my computers ability to recieve more data from the router but then someone else said that is not what an aircard is for. Anyway, Im stuck and would appreciate any help i could get as at the moment Im paying alot more cash each month for no improvement. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

Hi; I have a Dynalink router and on plan which I get really nice speeds for me (downloads a few megabytes a second), using Windows XP via ethernet.
However as soon as a laptop is also plugged in also via ethernet and streams videos, the internet on my Windows XP computer is so slow, web pages can barely open.
Is there anyone to somehow make both of them at least able to both use the internet? What's the problem? Thanks in advance for any help

So, sometime ago, around about the start of November, my internet speed dropped out of nowhere, and has remained at the constantly lowered speed since then. Usually, I would have a download speed of 4/5 mbps, however, in recent days that's more like 1/2mbps. When trying a bandwidth test, that would usually have been about 3.6/3.7 mbps, however that is more like 1.6 mbps now. (A way I used to scope what my bandwidth was, was using the Formula1.com website where when you watch a video on it, it will tell you your bandwidth rating before hand. That, as I say, has dropped from the 3.6mbps to the 1.6mbps mentioned. This is normally an okay speed to do things, however, whilst my father is using Netflix, the internet becomes so slow, that it is basically impossible to do anything. Normally, on my 'old' internet speed, it would have not been a problem.

Now, I've done all the tests that are normally mentioned to do, as I have been searching for an answer since the internet speed tanked. It is not a computer specific problem as it is exactly the same on all devices connected to the router. I have rung my ISP, and they have said that my line should be receiving around 5/5.5mbps, as we run on an ADSL connection. However, doing a line test through the same provider says we should be getting 2.27 mbps. My ISP reports no problems with the line, and there has been no change at my end either.

I however am not so good, someone told me that ones psychological well being is connected to the state of ones comp. Slow computer, a lot of irrtation. Obviously this is true.

But I digress!

Have an issue with high CPU that only occurs when internet/network card is involved. This makes my computer laggy.

According to asus liveupdate application I have the latest drivers for everything. I even updated my BIOS through it and it installed in windows, somehow. I did flash it via floppy or usb. I have read that this software is very unreliable and buggy.

If someone can give a link to where ASUS posts BIOS revision history/bugfixes I would appreciate it. I can't find it on this link.

I start OS, everything is fine.

Fire up latest version of chrome, 16.0.912.77 (my laptop has been connected on and off today and I have google update, so it should be this very latest), download anything (I think anything, at least from FTP) and CPU load increases as the download speed increases. It takes about 30-60 seconds for CPU to reach 100%, then the download speed decreases (I think my comp can't handle that high hd write speed while CPU is 100%). If it gets up to 1/2/3 MB/s (megabyte) this happens. Close dl/finished/paused → CPU goes back down to normal levels of idling (which I suspect is unusually high in my case). Windows is not very snappy, but not all too laggy either. I get maxed out to 12MB/s with ubuntu ftp, CPU rises, dls... Read more

For an OS drive the advertised speeds really mean nothing to the average user unless you are going to be transferring large files all day. Good day to all. I am using AT&T(sbcglobal) dsl. My plan is for the speed of 1mb and under. Now, I realize I am not going to get 1mb, the speed will be under. But the tests I am running are showing speeds around or under 1/4 of a mb. All these tests were run one right after another, at 5 different times of the day, from 8am to 11pm for 3 consecutive days. I have 2 computers running XP that I ran the tests on, and there are no problems with either computer, other than the internet speed. Here are the results.

Speedtest.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

Speakeasy.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

McAfee Internet connection speedometer: 200kbps

CNet Bandwidth Meter: line speed 224kbps

Now, when I run my ISPs speed test AT&T Speedtest, the test shows my speed is: download: 1.58mbps / upload: 0.31mbps. I don`t understand the large difference in speeds I am getting from independent speed tests, and the speedtest from my ISP. Now if I am to believe my ISPs speedtest, they are going to try to tell me I am receiving more download speed than I am paying for. I find that very hard to believe.

Since this is the first time I have looked into this, I am kind of in the dark about how much speed is expected exactly, but 0.24 seems on the low side to me. I know I will have to contact my ISP to look indepth into this problem, and that is why I came here first. I don`t want to sound like a complete idiot when I contact them. Hopefully someone can look at my speed... Read more

I've been told before that download speed is independent of how fast your Internet connection is. Is that true?

A:Download Speed v. Internet Connection Speed

Short answer = no. But on the other hand yes. Depends on how you mean the question.

Internet connection speed is defined by download speed and upload speed.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

It's probably an issue of semantics, i.e. what they meant when they said "download". Your "download speed" is dependent on how fast your ISP's download speed, but also how fast the downloading server us uploading the data, be it a file or a web page, or whatever. You can't get something faster than someone is sending it to you, however you can get it slower.

hi! i just wanna ask between the difference of the download speed and the internet speed. because i have a 1.5mb connection i tried at speedtest and when i download i always get a 190-200kbps rate. so its not actually 1.5mb in my download speed even my internet speed is 1.5mbps. is there and calculator what should be my connection if i want my download speed like 1mb per second? thank you very much.

A:difference between the download speed and internet speed?

Are you sure you're not getting 190-200KBps? You have to watch because the speed is often stated using different bit rates. When you see 1.5Mbs (lower case b) then it is megabits per second. If you see 190KBs (upper case B) then it's talking kilobytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte so you really need to multiply the KBs number by 8 to determine the megabits or divide the Mbs number by 8 to determine the megabyte number.

In your case 200KBs multiplied by 8 is 1600Kbs or 1.6Mbs.

Problem - My internet speed is beastly, I get a very good connection speed but whenever I try to download something the speed drops to almost nothing. The usual speeds I get for downloading are around 30 kb/s which should not be happening on a cable connection.

Hello everyone, I have a question about why my download speed is so much less than my connection speed. |I have cable, my connection speed is 11.0 Mbps. Whenever I download a file off the net I never can get the speed even close to just 1 Mbps. I get in the hundreds if I get lucky. Some of you may say that I have a lot of junk on my computer. But I just erased my computer and am in the process of installing what I want again. I've only used 30 gigs on my 200 gibs harddrive. I'm just curious as to why this is? Thanks everyone!

A:Internet speed vs download speed

connection speed is always mentioned in bits per second denoted by small 'b
download speed is denoted in bytes per second ,denoted by capital b 'B'
1 byte = 8 bits
if if your internet connection is 11mbps
then ur d/l speed would be 1.37mBps
please make a note ,there is difference between mbps AND mBps
hope u got ur answer

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this thread since I'm not sure if I have a malware problem, but here it goes:

I have a HP G60 Laptop running Win7 Premium 64bit. Intel Celeron @ 2.2GHz, 3Gig Ram, and an upgraded 320Gb HDD.
Over the last week or so I have noticed that my internet speed has been very much slower than usual. Normally, a 3min Youtube video would take a minute or two MAX to load, but now it will take well over ten minutes. I ran an online speed test and it said my download speed was peaking out at about 0.17Mbps. I ran this test with the newest version of Firefox and IE8, same results. I then ran the same tests on a different computer (same wireless network) and got download speeds of approx 1.5Mbps. Still thinking it for some reason might be the network, I reset the modem, tested again with same slow results. I even connected to a neighbors wireless network (with their permission) who has a faster speed (normally) and I still only peaked out with 0.18Mbps on my pc and almost 3Mbps on my other pc.

I am only able to connect to my network wirelessly due to it being Verizon Mobile Broadband (MiFi). So I have not been able to try a wired internet connection to see what that would do. Anyway, this is everything I have tried without any change in internet speed:

-Ran full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and found nothing.

-Uninstalled wireless adapter (Atheros AR9285) and restarted pc to reinstall

-Uninstalled any programs I may have... Read more

There are two internet services in my house.

There is a Dell computer running on Windows 7 that is having problems connecting to the wireless Bell internet. The speed is around 0.85 Mbps when it connects. However, when I use my Toshiba laptop (windows 8) to connect to the same wireless Bell internet, the speed is much better... around 6 Mbps.

I do not think it is a hardware problem with the Dell. When I use the Dell computer and connect it to the second wireless internet, Teksavvy, I get 16.24 Mbps (which is the normal speed).

So, this one computer is only having problems with the one internet service. Why? It needs to be using the Bell internet, so I can't just leave it on Teksavvy. I need to get it working with the Bell internet. Any insights?

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hello everyone.
I registered to the forum cause i am encountering a problem with my old internet's connection speed on a new computer.

I have a 2mbs internet connection which has been enough for me for the past few years. Problem is that since i bought a new desktop my connection is extremely slow, youtube videos lag almost instantaneously even on 360p (which didn't happen with the same connection on my old desktop). Moreover, downloading from firefox or programs like origin speed seems not to go above 15 or 20 kbps while on my old desktop it reached its limit around 210kbps. As you understand this is extremely annoying, i am suspecting that the problem is hardware related. I am using a modem (the one my isp provided) and an ethernet cable to my desktop. Additionally i am using windows firewall and Microsoft security essentials.

I would appreciate your advices and knowledge in order to understand whats causing my internet being so slow...

A:Internet connection speed problem on a new computer.

Moreover even if i open a youtube video and freeze it in order to stream, it does not. And i should also mention that its almost impossible to run a speedtest.net test, it keeps saying 'configuration load failed' an error occured while loading speedtest.net. Please try again and let us know if it continues to happen.
After a few tries it does work but the results are very very wrong

These results should be around 2mb's not 0.50 somethings definitely very wrong....

Hi guys,

I posted on here a day or two ago about a problem I had. I thought I had fixed it but it turns out I didn't. Here is my original post...

Hey everyone!

Long story so I'll try to be brief with lots of info lol.

I have 2 computers. One is custom made by a friend, dual core processors (AMD) at 2.0ghz each, 4gb of RAM, basic video card g-force but not sure how high quality (I know it's worse than my other computer) and has 3 dvd drives. The other computer is a dell computer: dual core (intel) at 1.80ghz, about 2gb of RAM, and a great video card (intel), 1 dvd drive.

Now, the dell computer had been always faster at everything. I finally realized it was due to the video card not being able to support all the graphics of vista on custom computer so I went in and edited the advanced display/visual function properties or whatever it's called where you can select to display or not display certain visual operations like that transparency look, showing contents of a window while you're moving it, shading behind the mouse pointer, etc. I disabled most of them and suddenly the computer started working faster. Yay for me! Before I figured this out, the computer was constantly crashing. I thought fixing those settings would help, but it didn't, not really. So I ended up uninstalling everythign that was recently installed and then re-installing only the programs I needed. This seemed to do the trick since it's been 2 days and it hasn't crashed (used to crash/freeze at least... Read more

Okay, this has been going on for weeks. Even my pretty techie bro is out of ideas. My brother returned to college not long ago, but he was still home when it all started. I'd asked him to see if internet was slow or anything, and he checked and told me it was fine. A few days later my dad brought his laptop home from work. The laptop is only on our network when he's doing stuff at home - but I asked him, and I was for myself it was completely fine...and fast. And as my brother's now back at college with his laptop, my computer is generally the only one on the network, but as it was going on before that, I know their laptops weren't effecting anything.

Now that we're done with the back-story, I'll do my best to explain what's going on: The connection on my computer is fine. Sometimes it'll short out, but generally it's good. However, it's always slow - about maybe 2 times faster than dial-up. But pretty often it becomes incredibly slow, taking as much as 20-30 minutes to load something, even simpler things.

That's the best I can come up with right now about the problem. Resetting the router and/or restarting the computer can help a little, but it eventually goes to near dial-up speed, then down to when it's very slow.

I guess something to add is that I'm the only one with Vista on the computer. My dad's laptop has XP, and my brother has a Mac laptop.

I've only used up a little less than 1/4 of the s... Read more

I have downloaded Combofix, but I'm reluctant to use it without discussing the problem with someone who knows what they are doing i.e. not me.

Hello Everyone,
I need help please. I have 4 computers (iMac, 2 laptops and 1 PC desktop) on a wireless network in different rooms of my house. All but one have 20+ mbps speed. The problem desktop computer is new but has 2.4 mbps speed. I have cable modem with a fast bandwidth and a Cisco N600 router.

I changed the network card (ASUS PCE-N53 Wireless -N Adapter) in the problem computer which didn't improve anything. As I write this, I am using a laptop on the desk with the problem computer and just did a speedtest which came in at 20.13 mbps. If I hard wire the problem computer it runs at 30+ mbps.

Any ideas?

How are you connected, 802.11 "b" max is ~5.5Mbps, "a" and "g" max out at ~20 Mbps, etc. WiFi operates at the highest possible speed that both endpoints can support. For example, an 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router will only work at the lower speed of "g". In other words, both devices need to support the same standard in order to operate at those speeds.

Also, are there any physical obstructions in the line of sight between devices? What's the distance between the devices? Is there any radio interference in the area?

Wikipedia: WiFi > Interference

For more details on this topic, see Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz.

Wi-Fi connections can be disrupted or the internet speed lowered by having other devices in the same area. Many 2.4 GHz 802.11b and 802.11g access-points default to the same channel on initial startup, contributing to congestion on certain channels. Wi-Fi pollution, or an excessive number of access points in the area, especially on the neighboring channel, can prevent access and interfere with other devices' use of other access points, caused by overlapping channels in the 802.11g/b spectrum, as well as with decreased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between access points. This can become a problem in high-density areas, such as large apartment complexes or office buildings with many Wi-Fi access points.

Additionally, other devices use the 2.4 GHz band: microwave ovens, ISM ban... Read more

My internet becomes unusable when my dell windows 7 laptop connects to it. I am not running any torrent programs (as I know of) and I have run malwarebytes on it, but the problem still occurs.

This happens after about three minutes of a user logging in. While the computer is in sleep mode the internet is still usable.

It was working just fine yesterday, but in the nighttime the internet became very slow, with ping speeds from 2000-4000 (normally 10-20), and download speed from 10-30kb/s (usually 1-2mb/s).

A:Internet speed incredibly low when computer connects

see if it still slow if using safemode with networking
connect to the router with a cable and

I have a Sony notebook I bought back in 2003 running XP SP2, which came with 500 MB of memory. I've used it all these years with my dial-up connection without any problems, and it's been updated at Microsoft Updates. Earlier this month I decided to try the wifi at my library, and bought a USB adapter for that purpose. It worked very well with the high speed connection for a half hour, and then it just turned off without warning. I turned it back on, connected again, and after that it turns off after 5 minutes as many times as I try (it still works great while it lasts). I did this several days, with the same result.
I exchanged the USB adapter for another one from a different company, with the same result.
I just upgraded the notebook to 1 GB of memory, and it still does the same.
I went to Sony Updates and downloaded their auto update software, and after 7 years all they offered for my computer was to get their media player reinstalled.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

So I built a new computer yesterday and when I ran a speed test today I was only getting 9.5mbps when I usually get over 30mbps. It has something to do with this computer since my other computer is getting 30mbps. And yes this computer is connected directly through and ethernet cable. Any suggestions anyone?

A:Why is my newly built computer not getting full internet speed?

You might want to check out the Advanced settings for this adaptor in Device Manager.

Make sure that flow control is disabled and that the Speed duplex settings are in Auto Negotiation mode.

It might also be worth going to the manufacture's site for your motherboard to obtain the latest drivers.

When comparing speeds, remember to divide your speedtest result by 8. 0.89 mbps is around 101KBps.

Download speeds depend on many factors, inclduing the modem/router, traffic through your ISP at the time, and the type of download, just to name a couple.

What type of download is it? Are they torrents? These can often be slow.

Are downloads slow from everywhere?

You mentioned video buffering; Do you have downloads going at the same time that you are trying to view a video? Are there other people sharing your connection (eg other family members)?

You didn't say if you had tried rebooting the router/modem, or if you had been in contact with your ISP. These would be among the first things to try.

As you haven't stated what you have tried, I'm going to assume none of the following have been tried. Apologies if you have tried/tested the following.

If you plug a phone into the same wall socket at your modem do hear any noise/static or is is sound quality very poor or low... Read more
