Defrag, Disc Check, Disc Clean up all not working

Q: Defrag, Disc Check, Disc Clean up all not working

Okay, So my roomate's laptop which is on Windows XP Proffessional started acting funny. Yes it does have Service Pack 3

It seemed like a problem that could be fixed with a Defrag, but Defrag wouldnt work.

So I tried Disc Check and it didnt work.

For the heck of it, I tried Disc Cleanup, and it freezes instantly and doesnt work.

It would be easy enough to fix if there was a restore point in System Restore, but for some reason that program hasnt made any restore points. ( go figure)

I have been working on this computer, trying every defrag and disk check fix I could find. Including all the command prompts, regsver32, installing new components, everything. Still no go.

More specifially, for defrag my error is: "Disc Defragmenter could not start"
It doesnt work when defrag c: is entered into Command Prompt.

I finnally got disc Check to respond by using command prompt and telling it to schedule a check for the next start up, but it didnt work. When the computer starts up I get a error like "Disc check cannot be used on RAW files" for a split second.

Starting the computer in safe mode doesnt make them work either.

Is there anything else I can do? Or do I just have to wipe everything and re-install the OS?

Preferred Solution: Defrag, Disc Check, Disc Clean up all not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear All,

Please suggest me a third-party app which will help me to achieve the below highlighted functionalities

You can suggest me 2 different apps for the 2 tasks. I am looking for something more faster than the default Win 8 error checking and defragmentation utilities.

A:Good apps for disc error check and defrag

Windows handles this functions very well these days, you can always run Check disk from the command prompt. Defrag is automatic. I used to use Diskeeper for defrag. However since I now have an SSD I have no need for it. Data Storage drives don't seem to get very fragmented and window defrag keeps up pretty well. and you can't defrag a SSD, The Trim function handles that.

Everytime i attempt to run a disc defrag it produces a pop-up box saying error can not run. The programme itself loads fine, the error comes when you try to defrag or annalyze. Does anyone know of any ideas why this is happening or how to resolve it?

A:Disc Defrag Is Not Working

I'm sorry to say that I can't help with the problem, but I can suggest a solution that should work better. I recently downloaded Diskeeper Lite, and I love it! The MS defrag uint would analyze my hdd and say that it didn't need to be defraged, this is a new hdd so I didn't worry about until I had been using it for three months and it still said the same. I downloaded the Diskeeper and it emmidiately suggested that I defrag my hdd, it took quite a while, but after it was done I ran it again as suggested and it was very short, and afterwards my computer was running faster.Diskeeper is freeware and can be downloaded here.

Hello people

Major problems arisen on my pc recently, a bit daunting to be honest and i hope some people can help

I may need some help explaining the problems to a further extent further along the line, i'm a beginner ish at computers, no training, self taught. But for now let me get started (takes deeeeeep breath!)

1) Service pack 2.

I have never been able to install it. I have ignored it for a long time but since the problems with ZoneAlarm (see 2) i decided to choose another free firewall. COMODO i think, it's CFP saved on my desktop anyhow, very popular. Anyhow i couldn't install it since i don't have SP2, so i decided that its about damn time i got it installed.

At first i let automatic update download sp2, stopped as many programs as i could running in the background and tried to install. "Access denied" halfway through install. Now i've searched these forums and there are similar issues around but none that i found to help specifically with my problem. I downloaded all 270mb of sp2 elsewhere, tried installing in safemode recieving this msg instead

"HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll2 to file C:WINDOWS\$NtServicePackuninstall$\reg00246. 5: access is denied"

Now i forget the thread where i got the remedy, but the process involved running "regedit" and changing the permissions for this particular "CEnroll.CEnroll2". Turns out that it was restricted, changed the permissions and i felt i was making progress only t... Read more

Working on a spiffy e-machine with Windows Vista Home Basic that runs pretty well.

After reading multiple posts where the advice usually begins with suggesting a 'boot disc' or a 'recovery disc', I guess what I'm looking to find out is:
1) what is the difference between a boot disc and a recovery disc?
2) How do I go about making one on this machine (or if I even can)? << I did read through Grinler's tutorials regarding System Restore points and all that seems to in good order. But I guess I'm not sure on the relationship between that and my post (or if there even is one).
3) a best practice regarding these type of discs
I don't have any pressing issues at this time, but I also don't want to wait until I do.

Everything I've learned here at BC has been so great & helpful, I would like to stay on that path, so any links/apps/ideas/suggestions and/or insights would be greatly appreciated.

A:Boot Disc, Recovery Disc, Frisbee Disc

1) what is the difference between a boot disc and a recovery disc?Boot disk vs recovery disk. Let me see if I can phrase that in a way that makes some sense.A recovery disc is a generic term for the disk or media containing a backup of the original factory condition or a specified condition of a computer as configured by the original equipment manufacturer or an end-user. OEM supplied recovery media is sometimes shipped with some computers to allow the user to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and pre-loaded software as it was when it was shipped. This is not as common a practice today as it was in the past. I won't confuse the issue, but google recovery partition for more information.A boot disk is a removable data storage medium, i.e. DVD or flash drive from which a computer can load and run 'boot' an operating system or utility program. The computer must have an installed program or application which will load and execute a program or application from the boot disk. This will enable you to boot an otherwise unusable machine to be able to troubleshoot the OS or non-working application as necessary.Hope that gives you a better idea of the difference. As to how to create a boot disk? I will let more knowledgeable staff or members assist you.

Hi all
I must admit to not having defraged my desktop before in 4 years, HP Pavilion by the way.
And i am using Windows built inn defragmenter. I have 250 GB free space out of 450 GB
I decided after several tries to defrag the C drive, and it seeming to stop at 19% analyzed, that I needed more patience, it took 6 hours!!!!! over Sat night.
OK Sun morn 7am, so its telling me that I am 26% fragmented, so I click on defrag, now its analyzing again, is this normal?
Anyway its now almost 3pm on WEDNESDAY, its 36% consolidated on pass 12.

I have 2 questions,
How many more passes will there be? and how much longer can it take?

Many thanks for anyone who can offer me hope.

Weekly I do a disk clean up + disc defrag on my C: Drive.
I am puzzled with the following message that is given after defrag is complete.

Defragmentation is complete for HP_Pavilion (C:)
Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.

So I click on view report. The top box is filled with all kinds of information regarding something called volume information.

The bottom box is supposed to show the files that did not fragment, but it is blank,no info in there at all! So why in the world do I keep getting the message some files didn't fragment?

And what in the world is master table fragmentation? That one appears in the top box towards the end of all the volume information.

Thank you for your explanations in this matter.
I am running Windows SP2,Home Edition. Any other info on my system can be found in my profile here at BC,but please feel free to ask any questions in order to help me sort this out.

Hello chainswap and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm guessing you're trying to use the built in Windows 7 defrag tool. Are you following these steps?

Improve performance by defragmenting your hard disk

You could also try a free 3rd party tool such as Defraggler or Puran:

I use Auslogic Disc Defrag on my PC with Windows 7 Home Premium. Does Windows 7 have a built in defrag program? Do I need the Auslogic program as well?

A:Windows 7 Disc Defrag

Hi Junior2007 Windows 7 indeed have a built-in defragger called "Disk Defragmenter". For more information on it and how to use it, you can read the tutorial below on SevenForums.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11733-disk-defragmenter-open-use.htmlAs for the other question, do you need another defragging program, I would say no since I'm trying to use as most Windows built-in tools as possible to cut down on the bloat and don't install programs I don't need, however third party defraggers are often more powerful than the Windows one and offer more features. So if you have a use for it, then yes it's a good program to add. Auslogics Defragger is good, there's also O$O Defrag or Defraggler if you want to look them up. The choice is yours

is it due to the fact that i did not run it for such along time

A:disc defrag runs endlessly

If you never defrag'd in all that time, it may very well take a long time.

First, make sure you run Scan disk first.

Then, in case other applications are interfering, I would recommend trying the defrag from Safe Mode.

I tried to defrag my fathers hard drive on his windows xp sp2 based Dell system and it couldn't defrag certain .BIN files. Where it shows you the color coded analysis of your fragmented hard drive there are many larger areas that are totally red (fragmnented files) I tried to run scan disc and it got to stage 4 of 5 and scanned up until 59% and then stopped.
I know he tried installing some Norton System Works program and it didnt complete installation - he tried to "go back " after installation failed and it gave him some error message which I wasn't there to see. He has Norton Antivirus 2007 (against my recommmendations) installed also.

Could those .BIN files that I can't defrag be something from Norton System Works ? Is there any way for me to get rid of them without removing Norton Antivirus ? Any help would be appreciated.

A:Hard Drive Won't Defrag + Scan Disc Stops

As I understand it, .bin files can be just about anything.http://www.iceteks.com/articles.php/binfile/1I guess I don't know what you mean when you say you couldn't defrag .bin files.Hopefully, you meant that you tried to run chkdsk /r or chkdsk from My Computer, rather than "scan disc" or (worse) NSW.XP Chkdsk, Using the Graphical Version (My Computer) - http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html Be sure to insert check marks in both boxes.I used NAV for about 5 years and NIS for another. If you want to uninstall NSW completely, you need to try using Removing your Norton program using SymNRT - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...v=&osv_lvl= LouisA drive which needs to have chkdsk run...normally will have trouble defragging. Chkdsk runs first, then defrag.

Kind helper,

I am disabled and homebound so my computer is a lifeline to me. I am no kind of computer expert so don’t know what to do. On October 1, I was doing a Google search on some topic (divorce lawyers in this case) and I picked up some nasty something. All of a sudden my computer started acting up. I would type in a search for say (asthma) and Google would give me my list of links but any links I clicked on diverted me to some totally unrelated site that were selling everything from chimney sweeping to pet food. I have to backspace and click on my choice sometimes as many 4xs before it delivers me to the actual site I asked for. If I go to a site on my favorites list I am delivered with no problem, or if the URL is short enough and I can copy and paste it into the address space I am delivered. I use IE6 as a browser, (tried updating to 7 or 8 but they wouldn’t work) Google as a search engine. In exploring the problem I found that the same thing happens if I use Firefox as the browser and Yahoo as the search engine or in any combination.

My first thought was to do a system restore to the previous day but what ever this bug is it killed any useful restore points. In trying to get system restore up and running I lost all previous restore points. Neither my check/scan disc or defrag tool will work.

So I spent days downloading virus programs and have run them all but none have solved my problems. I downloaded and scanned my whole computer with AVG (took 4 ˝+ hours)... Read more

Edit 2 I tried Safe mode before I used Ubuntu and it locked up. Sorry forgot to mention that. I have it started in safe mode with networking now ?? The cursor works in safe mode.

A:Disc defrag froze- Task bar and desktop no longer respond to input

Good Morning. Update. I shutdown and restarted doing more scans and fixes on startup. After getting it to start in safe mode with networking (I ran disc cleanup failed once worked once) it failed to start in safe mode the next time eventually by using the fix options short of full reload at startup several times the machine finally started and worked "normally". I decided to defrag again and left it on all night. This morning it had not finished when I looked at it and the mouse was not having the effect it is supposed to when I click on it again. I shut it down by the start button and restarted. It now seems normal again. I do not know what has happened I am going to leave this open for now.

Ya, I ran disc defrag and it said it could only put a fraction of the files in their correct spot. I have a lot of misplaced files that won't get fixed. Any help?

Hello world!

I just got a new laptop with Win7 64 bit home premium and that's all good that this
OS came installed on there and I'm using it, but for my teaching activities I'll need
to get into some Linux OS in a multiboot configuration. So I will want to eventually
need to be able to fix this when the HD fails, well because we know that ALL HDs
will eventually fail, right? So this is a 'remanufactured' ASUS K55A, and the one piece
of paper that came with it says the HD has been reformatted and there is no recovery
partition so I should promptly make up a recovery DVD set, which I did (4 DVDs).

So I used the disk management to shrink the C: down to it's minimum, like 150Gb, due
to what it said was some files that could not be moved. That's probably OK. Then I
deleted the D: and made a new D: of about 350Gb which leaves the unassigned space
all looking to be contiguous (like 188Gb). In looking on there, I see the UEFI partition
of 200Mb, which is cool, and then there are these two mysterious partitions: a 25Gb
recovery partition with no listing of it's filesystem nor any drive letter, hanging out in
the never never land and not in the early (leftmost) part of the disc, and there is this
protected Q: drive that apparently has MS office on it 'in case' I want to buy it. There
is the 'reduced with ads' MS office already working and that is all I would ever want.

1) In reading up I see there is a lot of headache going around with Win 8 and UEFI but
I believe that UEFI is a goo... Read more

A:Questions: UEFI, restore partition, Q:, install disc, recovery disc

Hi PJ,

You covered several areas, so I'll start with some suggestions:

1. Since you already burnt (and checked?) the recovery DVD's, that recovery partition is no longer required, so you can remove it. Everything you need to restore the computer back to its factory state will be contained on those 4 x DVD's - store them safely.

2. For the Linux distro's, given that this is a UEFI boot, I would run them in a virtual machine using either free VirtualBox or free VMWarePlayer (my personal preference is for the latter).
Linux - Install on Windows 7 Virtual Machine using VirtualBox

3. If you never plan on using Office, uninstall it, then remove the Q: partition.

You should also consider a clean OEM install at some point - it gets rid of all the bloatware that the OEM's come with:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Lastly, keep this handy if you choose to clean install under UEFI:
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with

In trying to clean up my HD I came across the following:

In my "C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\ Local Settings\Temp\Office Update" there are a whole lot of files all labeled "OU(00002)_Msi.log" (00003- 00004 etc) some are over 10Mb. Can these be deleted?
The same applies to "KB*****.log" files in C:\Windows

I have read that *.log files can be deleted but...

If you don't plan on reverting to the last build , or Prior OS version, yes.
But Windows automatic maintenance will usually take care of it eventually, after a certain amount of time(I'm not sure, but 30 days or so I think).

I've spent hours and hours trying to fix it, and have found nothing really worthwhile online. I'm coming here in the outside chance someone else may have experienced something similar.

Basically, my Windows 7 laptop will no longer allow me to play dvd/cds (burned or store bought). The drive shows up in My Computer, is enabled, bios look good, etc, etc, but if I put a disc in it never autoruns or shows up with the disc name in My Computer,
and if I double click the disc drive I get a "please insert disc" dialogue box and the drive door pops open. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, and (for what it's worth) I don't think its a hardware issue because after I sent my computer off
to Samsung for this same repair it came back completely reformatted the disc drive worked for a second. Then I started getting rid of some of the bloat ware in here (bought it at best buy... big mistake) again, and it shut down.

Here's what I've done or tried so far:
- Uninstall, reinstall the drive
- Updated the drivers
- Updated dvd/cd drive firmware
- Ran Microsoft's "Fix it" utility
- Cleaned the lenses/laser
- Remapped the drive to a different letter/path
- Checked registry to ensure filters weren't an issue (the upper and lower)
- Restored the laptop back to just after I received it back from the Samsung repair people (didn't work)
- Undid the restore
- Checked BIOS (I'm by no means BIOS-savvy, but it appeared that everything was in line with ... Read more

Hi All,
I know this is 'against the rules' as I have posted this in another section as well but I got no replies so thought I would try this instead.

I have a toshiba satellite L750 running Windows 7 home premium, when trying to burn anything onto a blank disc I get as far as selecting my items and asking it to burn but it keeps telling me to insert a blank disc (which obviously I have). I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.

Would be very greatful if someone could help.

Many thanks in advance!

Hmmm tricky are you sure they are blank? your drive also may need a firmware update.

How do I make a Window 7 x64 Ultimate Install Disk using my Windows x64 Pro Disk? I read somewhere that the four versions of Windows 7 x64 (Starter, Home, Pro and Ultimate) are all on the Setup DVD you buy, the difference is only in the Setup.ins and boot pictures?

I want to make a Slip-streamed Setup DVD for Ultimate. How? Thanks, Donald
