Window 8.1 Product Key? A few questions.

Q: Window 8.1 Product Key? A few questions.

Hey Guys,

In 'System Information', there's a link that says 'Get more features with a new edition of windows". Clicking that brings up an 'Enter Product Key' page, and it is only at this point that I realize my product key isn't stuck to the bottom of this PC.

So, researching this on Google, I found a product key that Microsoft Released for the Trial:
NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F

So, my question is: Will my Windows 8 Product Key work with 8.1 Preview?
If so, I think I would rather dig that up than use a generic key.

If it doesn't, and I need to use this generic key, what happens at the end of the Preview when everyone has the same Product Key.

Will Windows 8 become an Operating System where you'll need to pay for the updated OS after the preview? Ie, paying for and getting a new Product Key?

And last, does anyone know what features entering a product key will actually unlock?

Thanks, Kurt

Preferred Solution: Window 8.1 Product Key? A few questions.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to EF BarkerBlast !

1- You can upgrade from Windows 8 without entering a product key, but for a clean install you'll always need a product key. You can enter the generic key or a key received from MSDN in case you have a subscription. Windows 8 keys do not work for a clean install.

2- At the end of the preview, if you upgraded from a valid Windows 8 install you'll be able to upgrade to RTM without a product key, but you will lose all your apps. If you installed the preview form an ISO or upgraded from a non-activated/illegal copy of Windows 8 you'll need to buy a new key.

I have read various things on this forum and other sites about Windows 7 product keys and activation under various circumstances, and I wanted to ask again here just to verify accuracy.

1) Can a Windows 7 Professional x64 Retail Upgrade product key be used to clean install Win7, or are additional hacks/workarounds required? I've read various things here, from clean installs activate fine with no additional workarounds, to Activation fails with a "This is an upgrade key" message," to having to re-install Win7 over your clean install or performing some registry hacks (see here: Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Clean Install Windows 7 with Upgrade Media) to allow activation. I've also read that x86 upgrade keys are upgrade only & only allow activation when upgrading, but x64 upgrade keys are full keys & can be used with clean installs. Is this true?

2) Can a Win7 Pro x64 Retail Upgrade product key be used to activate Win7 Pro x86 as well? I've read that keys are edition specific (i.e. Professional) but not architecture specific (x64 vs x86). Is this true as well?

Since I can only activate once without having to call MS, I'd like to know the correct answer to these questions, as many of what I've read contradict each other. Thanks!

A:Product Key Questions?

I am not going to answer the questions about how to perform a clean install from an upgrade disk, because there is too much confusion, at the present time.

I can give you other advice, however. When asked for the key number, while installing, just ignore. You actually have 30 days before you need to activate.

My advice, install the way you think is best. If it does not work, try another, and then another. Once installed, try it for a week or so. When satisfied, activate. I would also make a copy of your hard drive, so that you can reinstall with the copy in the future and not worry about activation.

My copy of 7 is due to arrive Tuesday, so I will be putting my money where my mouth is.

Good luck

2. I read on few posts that it takes 21 days to complete the learning / pattern analysis process. Do we have any registry settings to control this time period and start instant detection.

I agree that the CD and the PK live independent lives. However....

Firstly, my understanding has always been that at the time of installation of the OS, when a user enters the PK, that it is then tied, in the MS database, to the Motherboard ID. If the user (or in this case the user's roommate) now uses that PK with a different MB, that it will flag up on the MS database and the installation will not proceed until the user convinces MS that the original MB is dead.

Secondly, I was under the impression that the W8.1 ISO could only be used in two circumstances - 1. to reinstall W8.1 on a machine that originally had an OEM version of W8.1 installed and where the PK was hard-coded into the BIOS (or more correctly the UEFI)...... or 2. where the user purchased a PK from MS.

Is my understanding of the above procedures incorrect?

I believe that you will have to reinstall all the additional software that you currently have, however I may be wrong on some of it. I know that when I upgraded from Vista Basic to Home Premium I had to reinstall all the additional software that I had on the machine before the upgrade. Maybe someone else can confirm this point.

Cheers,

I have general questions about these two products. I have been using RUBotted on my home laptops and PC and work PC, one laptop running Vista the rest are XP. I have recently (yes, since the April 1st Conficker issues have been made news to hear) gotten notices on each machine that I have a bot trying to connect out, noting a malicious DNS query. As expected, after the notice it prompts the user to clean with HouseCall, which you can download and try for free, but it turns into a trial download of TrendMicro Internet Security.

So here's the questions:

1. Is RUBotted trustworthy and reliable? Would it present false alarms (even possibly in a timely manner) in order to "scare" a user into downloading the trial version of TrendMicro Internet Security? Can I trust that what it is telling me is true? I am not an amateur to bots and malware issues that might be infecting me, but I'm not sure that every notice from RUBotted is legit.

2. Is it worth verifying that I have no bot infections by installing Trend Micro's product, Internet Security? In order to do so, it would require me to remove AVG, Zone Alarm, McAfee Site Advisor and Spybot S&D so far. I stopped at that point before it likely asked me to remove Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster, which would render my computer rather unprotected, relying on a product that is a trial version which I am not so familiar with.

So, it TM RUBotted trustable, and is their TIS product worth paying for in spite of using MBAM, Spy... Read more

A:Window 8.1 Pro Product Key

WARYAA Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about needing your product key and wanted to help. With Win8x, the product key is embedded into the UEFI firmware on the motherboard.  You can retrieve it by following these directions:  Product Key - Find for Windows 8 However ... you have a bigger problem.  Your Win8.1 is not activating because you most likely reinstalled Win8 from an image your downloaded from the Internet or from an MS DVD -- and those images are Retail versions. Your PC came preinstalled with an HP OEM version of Win8 -- and the product key from that can only be used to activate the HP OEM version, not the Retail versions.  So basically, the version you installed will not activate unless you go out and buy a license for it. What will work is restoring your machine to its original factory condition using HP Recovery Media.  This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.  You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Upd... Read more

As it comes with OEM drive , I have installed window 7 Home Premium again to get the product key so that i can reinstall window 10 with product key. But when i checked OEM drive it completely empty.
I have tried "wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey" commend to get the key but did not get the keys. I posting the supporting images, help me out.

A:How to get the window product key from OEM.

Hi, and welcome to TSG.

The product key should be on the holographic Windows 7 Certificate Of Authenticity sticker attached to the outside of the computer. On laptops, this sticker may sometimes be inside the battery compartment. I have attached a photo of such a sticker used by Dell with part of the product key blanked out.

Hello all,

I work in a company of about 300 employees. We have about 28 branch offices scattered across various parts of the US. Our corporate office has about 20 employees and the rest are spread out across these other branches. We order all of our computers and laptops from Dell and have them shipped to the corporate office, then we set them up for each employee before we deliver it to their branch office. My supervisor and I are in charge of setting up these computers before the user starts to use them.

We always order the Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Standard to come with these computers. In the past, when Microsoft Office only required you to type in a product key and not have a Microsoft account to associate the key with, that was fine. Adobe Acrobat was the same way; just type in the key and there was no need for an AdobeID. Now we have to deal with having accounts for each product key we have, which can be a big pain, as we all know.

Once Microsoft and Adobe first started requiring accounts to install/use their software, I set up a generic e-mail account ([email protected]) as a Microsoft account and AdobeID account. When our new computers came in, I would just tie all Office/Acrobat license keys to that account. After all, once the software was set up, there was no need for the user who was getting that computer to use the Microsoft account or the AdobeID account. A:Questions about Office/Acrobat product key management for businesses

Since I can't seem to edit the original post, I wanted to clarify something:

When I'm talking about the Microsoft account, I'm talking about the one you make on Microsoft's website when you have to enter your Office product key and download the software to the computer. I am NOT talking about the Microsoft account that is associated with Windows 10. We use local accounts on Windows 10 computers and do not tie them in with a Microsoft account. The question I posted above is merely asking about the Microsoft account in terms of associating the product key for Office to an account. Same goes for the AdobeID. We will continue using local accounts on computers until Microsoft takes that ability away (which I hope they never do).

Sorry for any confusion!

Hello,

I've been having a few issues with a new home-built computer (start up occurred on 11/25/2010), specifically BSOD's. Initially, the computer would crash due coming out of hibernation. This has been solved by turning off this feature, for now. In addition, a new problem cropped up yesterday. But first, a bit about the computer:

Computer background info:
-OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
-OEM version, purchased from Fry's Electronics.
-Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD3
-Chipset: Intel i5-760
-RAM: 8gig Corsair XMS3 1600, matched latency
-HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 Tb 7200 rpm 32 Mb cache
-Video Card: NVidia GTX 460 768 MB

As window's updates have been installed the BSOD occurrence has slowed down until yesterday. Here is a chronological list of what happened:

-Computer was turned on, after being turned off since 12/18 as owner was on travel.
- During the first 15 minutes, two BSOD's occurred.
- After the second BSOD, the virus software registration files had become corrupted and required re-install (Kaspersky).
- After the Kaspersky registration files had been uploaded and the computer restarted, the Windows Product ID had been lost and had to be re-entered.
- Once the ID had been re-entered and accepted, Adobe Premiere fails to open fully: it will open to the main screen, but any further commands results in a software hang and the software has to be closed. This is new and had not occurred prior to the second BSOD on 12/31. Also, Window's media viewer will freez... Read more

A:lost product key for window xp home

Sorry buenf but we can't help you with that. An OEM (preinstalled) version of XP is only meant to be used on the computer it came with, it's the downside of not having to pay the full price of a retail licence. Getting the OEM key to work on another system would be illegal. Your only solution is to buy a retail licence and use the retail product key that comes with it (if you can't activate the OEM version with a retail product key you can phone ms or reinstall from scratch with the retail CD).

I'll close this thread, please refer to the forum rules.

A:Reinstall Window XP- Product Activation

Dell OEM disks do not require activation.  If the SLP key is missing this means you did not use DELL OEM media OR you are trying to use XP on a system that did not come with XP.   Microsoft DOES NOT provide support for SLP activation or OEM Versions of windows.

"Microsoft feeds synchronization" errors are XP Internet explorer errors and has nothing to do with Activation."
XP is end of life End of support AND microsoft has removed the downloads for Service pack 1 and 2 and 3.

Reinstalls of XP require service packs as well as IE8 minimum.
Its probably too late to get most of the links below.

XP is no longer supported. I highly recommend you download all 4 gigs of the files below to a flash drive because later on they will no longer be available.

All of the Dell CD's I have have Dotnet 1.1 sp1 on them.  You have to install your dots in order.  CHIPSET Should be FIRST before anything else.

There will be tons of stuff to install if you don't have even with SP3

IE8 being one. DOTNET 1.1 is on the XP CD from dell.

I strongly recommend you download the files onto a flash drive because there is no telling how long these will stay.

It wont let you backtrack.

Once you get all that you can install Firefox ESR

I started to repair Vista but decided it wasn't necessary and did not follow through with using the repair disk.  Every time I boot up, a window appears telling me to insert the HP Product Support Disk in the CD Drive. How do I stop this from appearing? Thanks to anyone who replies. Doug

Hi, I've been using this laptop with no major issues since 2012. Now it seems that everything is breaking apart. My disk is giving errors all the time, I guess it must be on its last breaths. S.M.A.R.T has shown errors, also it breaks windows and it even broke a linux distro I have with disk errors. I'm currently also able to only boot linux, for some very weird reason I can't even boot my windows 10 USB media, it "boots" but it goes to a permanent black screen. A fresh manjaro linux install is also taking a bit long to boot, but it seems it is working so far. The laptop is also getting way too hot. So my questions: I intend to upgrade the stock HDD to a SSD disk. It is possible to replace the HDD with a regular SSD? Does this model support, has ports to, a M.2 NVMe SSD? Is it possible to upgrade the BIOS of this laptop? Thank you.

Good morning, i've called the USA toll frre phone number and still not working. I visited the site you posted to me and it shows that the Product Key of WINDOW RT 8.1 is preinstalled on the system embedded in the UEFI / BIOS firware of OEM PCs. so i did research on how to get the Product Key from the UEFI/ BIOS and i found out i will have to download a software call (NirSoft's Produkey or RWEverything) to reveal the embedded product key. The problem with this Window RT 8.1 is that, is only Application download from Window Store or Microsoft Store that can run on it. Please what do i do Now?

Hi,
I'm having trouble finding the windows 7 product key on Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm trying to format my drive by reinstall windows. I did install the Windows 7  that is not from OEM and now I'm planning to sell this laptop without giving away my Window 7 Installer product key, so I'm planning to reinstall windows 7 by OEM windows 7. Is it possible? Or did I just replace the Window 7 product key? Can someone help me in this case
Thank you,
Pat

A:Locating OEM Window 7 product key on Dell Studio 1558?

Depends on who the buyer is, their technical expertise and how you format the hard drive...
If you don't select format during the Windows setup there will be a Windows.old folder and the buyer can get all your old files from it.
If you just use the Windows format, the buyer can install recovery software which can get by the Windows format. It'll take a little work but it can be done.
The customer can obtain the product key if they install Belarc Advisor but that should be only for the current version of Windows installed, a determined user might be able to get the old key if you don't format and there is a Windows.old format. The old OS can be restored from the Windows.old folder for instance and BSelarc Advisor can then be used.
Your best bet is to use DBAN and completely wipe the hard drive. Only an expert in data recovery would be able to recover any data from the hard drive, it would probably be costly, time consuming and a pretty difficult job if DBAN is used. - I don't think many people would dedicate the time and resources to recover your data as statistically from a home consumer DBAN wiped system the probability of finding anything of any use to justify the time spent is probably low. For the not so through Windows format, maybe some "baddies" would have a quick look at it to see if they could find anything useful. However it is probably likely to go to a user who just want... Hi

Using Windows ADK 10 v1511, I injected the three product keys in the respective volume images of the Multiple Editions (MSDN) and Education (MSDN) isos of Windows 10 v1511.

When, however, I boot these isos, the input window of the product keys is still displayed during the first installation phase of Windows 10. Why?

How do I avoid that this window appears in order to immediately display the window that allows to choose the edition to install?

Thanks

Bye

You can't do both. You can't skip the presentation of the product key window and have it ask for which edition to install. Insert the product key for the edition you want installed in a PID.txt file:

[PID]
Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Product key goes in place of xx's obviously. Save the PID.txt file in the sources directory of the Windows 10 Install media. That will skip the product key window, but it will also define which version of Windows 10 gets installed so it will also skip the choose which version choice window as well.

Well I currently have window vista 32 bit but with 3 GB of ram but I am considering getting window 7 pro 64 bit. How much ram am I able to max my computer at? yes my computer can support a 64 bit. I am really considering getting 64 bit because I do a lot of stuff on my computer. I will be getting some more ram for my computer. or is a bad idea to go from a 32 bit OS to a 64 OS ?

A:considering getting window 7 pro 64 bit questions

If you are getting 4 gigs of ram or more, I would suggest getting x64, with a fresh install. As for the ram limit, with 64-bit, it is some very high number that I cannot remember at the moment. But for your purposes, your motherboard's ram limit will be more of an obstacle than 64-bit will be. Be sure that your Motherboard can support 8 or 16 gigs of ram before upgrading.

I myself upgraded from 32-Bit XP to W7 x64 with 8 gigs of ram. It's working like a dream.

I have made a start menu on the desktop in my windows 8 & it now contains many window features & programs such as system tools, task manager, calculator word pad, notepad, etc. My question is where did all these features show in windows 8 before I made the start menu.
Next question I cannot find a way to make a shortcut for Mail so I have to go start window to check the to check email. Also no way to make shortcut for solitaire.
Thanks to this forum as I now have media center. I am a intermediate PC user and for many years taught computer at the Senior Center and I am certain that if a newbe installs window 8 it will be so very confusing they just might start drinking or throw their computer out the window. Also last month I installed a Samsung 256 gb ssd and now my start up time is 15 secs & shutdown is 5 secs. Also to open programs is 1 sec so everything is really fast jimjoh

A:many questions on window 8

If you right click on the Metro Start screen you should see an "All Apps" option pop up along the bottom of the screen. Click that and you should see a lot of the missing features you mentioned. There are also some settings on the Charms Bar. Mouse to the lower right corner of the screen for that. Mouse over to the lower left corner of your screen and right click for even more hidden settings.

Hello everyone! I have some questions for Window Vista.

I am running on Window Vista Home Premium.I am unsure of it is 32Bits or 64Bits.

The question i am asking is :

If i had 32Bits,the maximum memory i can use is 3.5GB? Am i right?

If i had 64Bits,the maximum memory i can use is 16GB? Right?

Firstly the mystery in my mind is,do Window Vista Ultimate hold 128GB RAM?

Recently i downgraded my Window Vista Home Premium to Window XP Professional.
The reason is,i find Vista disallow me to play many of my favourite games.
Now...i am quite regret that i downgraded. Because i need more RAMs to run my server.

People, should i upgrade back to Vista? If so,64Bits or 32Bits better?

The CPU or computer i am having is ACER Aspire M5620.

The CPU Specifications can be found here :

Acer Computer Singapore

I wish i get a reply ASAP! Thank you!

A:[HELP]Window Vista's Questions

Vista Home Basic supports 8GB
Home Premium 16GB
And above all 128GB+

I would go for 64-bit, your PC can certainly handle it.
And it's not only for the RAM, read this thread: 64-bit: More than just the RAM

I'm new to theme editing and I've been tinkering around with VistaStyleBuilder.

1. Where can I change the window corners? Mine're a little messed-up; the color, blur, and shadow only extend to a rounded portion.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/150/screendb.png

2. Where can I specify the width of the window frames and the extent of the blur effect? Would it be possible to remove window borders completely?

3. Is it at all possible to remove the titlebar on all windows (or take ~30 pixels off the top)?

4. Oh, and a question unrelated to window borders: How do I change the color of the taskbar icon progress indicator (e.g. the one that shows up when you're transferring a file).

Thanks in advance!

A:A few questions about window borders

#1
The corners cannot be 100% transparent it needs some color.

#2
The width is at
Fonts, Colors & System Metrics > Fonts & System Metrics > PADDEDBORDERWIDTH:SIZE Increase it.
The blur may be
Fonts, Colors & System Metrics > Colors (Globals)>GLOWINTENSITY:INT
#3
I do not know, but it may be in
Windows and Caption Buttons > Aero > Dwm Window > Frames > Normal>Top
#4
Try
Taskbar & System Tray > TaskBand > Basic > TaskBand > Progress
Taskbar & System Tray > TaskBand > Basic > TaskBand > ProgressIndeterminate
Or
Buttons, Boxes & Controls > Progress Bars > Normal
Buttons, Boxes & Controls > Progress Bars > Indeterminate

hi,

In window explorer, when I switch folders, there’s a clicking sound; is there a way to disable that sound?

Sometimes when window explorer crashes, I can’t see the tasks in thebottom, and I’d have to ctrl alt delete in order to reboot; what causes the crash and is there a faster way to restore it without having to reboot?
Thanks.

A:2 questions about window explorer shell

The sound will be within this Key in the Registry:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default
The sound in question is called "Windows XP Ding.wav"

Have you tried pressing the "WinKey" on your keyboard, its the key immediately to the right of "Alt Gr" whenever you can't see your Taskbar.
