Windows 7 Media Player - Disable Auto Run/Auto Play

Q: Windows 7 Media Player - Disable Auto Run/Auto Play

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently started using WMP11 on my Vista x64 notebook to manage my music. There is an annoying feature which auto-rates your music files based on how many times you play them. Note, I do not mean the manual ratings where I would have to click on the stars. WMP automatically rates these stars for me.

The reason this is a problem for me is that I have weekly backups running onto an external hard drive. When WMP auto-rates my songs, it therefore changes the modification date and time of the file. Therefore every time I run my weekly backup the software thinks the file has changed, which it really hasn't except for the rating. The backup therefore takes much longer to perform since it's trying to backup every song I've listened to since the last backup.

How do I disable auto rating in Windows Media Player 11 on Vista x64?

I've searched every search engine, group, forum, etc. and have found nothing. There must a registry entry or setting somewhere, no?

Thank you all in advance.

All of a sudden, WMP9 won't auto connect (open) when I click on a music or video file. I should say, it opens for about ½ second but immediately shuts down. I have reinstalled. but that didn't help. If I open WMP9 first and then click on a file, WMP9 closes down immediately. I have reviewed the WMP9 options settings, and everything seems to be set the way they always are. Anyone got any suggestions?

A:Windows Media Player 9 won't auto connect

its most probably codec corruption. download this pack: Klite Codec Pack. the latest version is 2.3.2. Its got all the codecs u'll need to play audio and video. Its even got an advanced media player included, which can play almost all audio/video files including DVDs.

Yesterday I finally got down to organizing my mp3s. I 've so far been very weary of any automated options of arranging my mp3s (which are in the number of hundreds of thousands - avid music fan that I am). Reason being that most of the time if you rely on computers to automate tasks that are too complex for them to do so, you put too much time in yourself for very mediocre results. In the good old days (before reluctantly making the transition to mp3) I had my cds (sleeveless) in a some 200 cd per case folders and I let my brain do the work of mentally sorting out where everything is or what I want to listen. In any case, I am diverging here, sorry for that, yesterday I decided to make the move.

First of all I've long been waiting for vista for what was supposed to be the virtual folder features and ended up being the stacks. So I coughed up 400 euros or so for vista ultimate. I should have expected that the useless hacks (not in the computer wiz sense of course) that they are over at microsoft they would have messed up this much touted feature, I just didn't think that they'd come up with such a sad excuse of "tagging". Once again near monopoly forced me to give them the benefit of the doubt.

What a horrid mess. Gonne are the adjunct files for file types that don't support metadata as was the case in windows xp, and it seems that the only files you can tag are docs and xls, some picture formats, a handfull in total, thus rendering the sta... Read more

A:Solved: How to disable auto play?

There are many different ways to disable the autoplay. Some examples are editing the registry, applying a group policy, or running a program to do it for you. All these ways can be found HERE

How to use Group Policy settings to disable all Autorun features in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000
Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then click System.
In the Settings pane, right-click Turn off Autoplay, and then click Properties.

Note In Windows 2000, the policy setting is named Disable Autoplay.
Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
Click OK to close the Turn off Autoplay Properties dialog box.
Restart the computer.

To disable Autorun yourself on operating systems that do not include Gpedit.msc, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following entry in the registry:
Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the "How to selectively disable specific Autorun features" section.
Click OK, and then exit Reg... Read more

A:Windows Media Player auto full-screen if I open?

Hi there and welcome to Eight Forums!

The sollution to your problem is very easy. Click and hold the upper blue bar and drag the entire window a little bit down and to the left. Now you can hover over the rightabove corner of the screen. There will appear an arrow in a 45degree angle. Click and hold an drag to the lower left to change the size of the window to whatever size you want it to be.

Now close Media Player and restart it. You will see that it's the same, smaller, size that is was when closing.

Good luck with it!

In the past, whenever I've clicked on a video on a webpage, Windows Media Player automatically opened and played the video.

I've recently downloaded WMP 11, and now when I click on a video, I get a dialog box asking whether I want to open or save. When I click on OPEN it begins a several minute (depending on video size) download before opening the video.

I've searched as best I can for a solution, with no luck. I figure it has to be a WMP setting, or perhaps a Windows XP setting. I've "rolled back" to previous WMP version....no luck.

Any ideas????

0x1) is there a way to disable annoying autoplay feature in windows media player: when i play music in "now playing" mode and insert a disc which contains some video WMP stops playing music and asks me to play that disc or starts playing without any questions (e.g. when i insert DVD). in addition when WMP asks before playing it proposes three options: resume playing, go to library and play previous list. choosing "resume playing" you'll not resume the music just played, you'll start playing inserted disc. if you choose "play previous list", it also won't continue the playlist i was just playing, rather a playlist or track before the one i was just playing! very strange behaviour, isn't it?
note that this happends only in "now playing" mode, when library is active everything works fine.
please don't tell to go to control panel and change autoplay settings: it takes no effect. it works when WMP is not started or if WMP is not in "now playing" mode, otherwise WMP ignores that settings and demonstrates his "very intellectual"automatic playing.

When i run a song in media player after about 30 seconds or so the computer will restart... ((But only when i run a video or song)).

I have not changed or updated anything with media player for a while and it has been working fine.

When the error report comes up after the computer restart it explains in the technical information that the files 'Mini021410-01.dmp' and 'sysdata.xml' will be recorded in the error log.

A person in another forum said that these were files that were refered to the realtek audio drivers.

Will updating or uninstalling the realtek drivers fix the problem or am i on the wrong track?

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

This is driving me nuts! . Using Windows XP, I want to disable/kill the Auto Arrange function in My Pictures (and all sub-folders). Unticking it in context menu (right click) makes no difference nor (anymore) does editing the Registry Entry (ie, HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Windows NT/Current Settings/Program Manager/Settings/Auto-Arrange/Edit D Word Value, etc.

Any idea what I should do next?

A:How to disable Auto Arrange in Windows XP?

Can you provide some more info on what you are trying to accomplish or what the OS is preventing you from doing?
which view do you have your My Pictures (and subfolders) set to?

Auto Arrange simply moves the icons neatly to the beginning of the window. you can change the order of them but you cannot leave space between them. with this unchecked, you can scatter your icons anywhere you want them. I only find this useful with desktop icons that I want in a particular place all of the time for convenience but inside a folder, I don't understand why you wouldn't want auto arrange

Did you try setting defaults on both the General tab and View tab of Folder Options?
Also, Reset All Folders button on the View tab should restore the default views of all folders while Apply to All Folders will set the folder view of every folder to the view of the folder you are currently in.

A:Windows xp disable auto updates.

Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Double click on "Automatic Updates" choose "Disabled" from the drop-down list next to "Startup Type." Click on "OK" and that should do it.

If you also want to stop the service immediately without rebooting, also click on the "Stop" button while you're there.

You might want to visit Black Viper's site for a list of XP's services and recommendations as to which are unneeded and can safely be turned off.

Not sure if "focus" is the right term here, but anyway. I use "list" view almost exclusively so this may not be an issue with other views. But one of my beefs with W7 is: if you're viewing a folder that has multiple rows of files or sub folders; then you click on of the the folders that's more to the right of the window and the entire contents of the window reorients itself so what you clicked on is now more towards the left area of the window. Know what I'm saying?

Here's a before and after of what I'm talking about....

Open Window...

Now I click on a file that's slightly out of view and it does this without me touching the slider at all.....

Yuck, how do I make it stop this? Is that possible?

First off I used the forum search function and didn't fins any threads addressing this issue so I apologize in advance if this is a duplicated topic and I somehow missed it.

I have disliked this "feature" since windows 7 and I see they still have not restored the ability to manually sort without having to give every file a "tag". Note: I do not want to use windows live essentials as I hate photo gallery, so this is not an option. I used to be able to arrange my photos by dragging and dropping them next to another similar photo and it would snap to grid where I dropped it. This helps me eliminate duplicate pictures. I found this ink for windows 7:

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

However it says very clearly at the beginning not to use it for any other OS versions. Does any one know if this works for windows 10 as well or if there is a way to do it in windows 10? I would prefer a 3rd party program as oppose to editing my registry if it can be helped (all the things that need "fixing" for customization in windows 10 seem to always suggest a reg fix, but I am afraid to edit my registry too much).

I appreciate any help.

Hello, i'm running Windows 8 Home Premium.
I'd like to increase my startup speeds, I already disabled as much as I can in Task Manager, msconfig, etc.
In the Task Scheduler, it shows Metro Apps are taking CPU time at startup though. After much searching on the topic, I find very little about how to disable the Metro Apps from starting up. The main one I want to disable is "Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging". I do not want to uninstall them, I just do not want them to do anything until I open them. It takes over 2 minutes of CPU time at startup for that one Metro App to fully load, and most of the time I never use it.

I have tried going into the Permissions of the App, and I disabled all of its Permissions to run in background of lock screen and everything. Still, it loads in Task Manager and takes CPU time.

Hi there,

Im looking for a way to disable the way windows 7 automatically arranges files and folders.
What im talking about is...When new files and folders are created / moved to a folder in which you are currently viewing, the new objects are thrown into the original folder contents and automatically arranged. I know this sounds rather vague / moronic....

But what im really looking to do is, have windows 7 act like XP does with new objects. Where as the newly moved / pasted files or folders would be placed at the very end of all original contents in the folder being viewed.

Sorry for the pithy description....got a bad cold and a little out of it right now.
Any ideas?

I mean, without telling Windows 8 it's on a public network, which then breaks it from working with devices that I've previously manually setup.

Dear Lenovo Tech Support, Windows 10 Is the most annoying OS ever. It does havoc in my P40 Yoga, It automatically installs drivers that does not work well with the P40. Whenever I opened Firefox and tried to connect to a website or tried to connect to a different Wifi network, the screen would turn black for a couple of seconds and the mouse cursor would center it self in the screen, like some sort of a reset. I installed the original WiFi driver from Lenovo website and magically the problem stopped. It is unreasonable and even time consuming that I have to write this message and needed to reinstall drivers from Lenovo website because of this new idiotic OS.I demand, that you write a script and add an option to the Lenovo settings app that will prevent windows 10 from automatically updating it's drivers and replacing them with universal ones. Also I had an Impression that Lenovo is a professional company, that make sure their computers work well and error free, without annoying maintenance... well prove me right and kindly if it's not too much to ask, contact Microsoft yourself and make sure they stop auto-updating drivers and replacing them with universal ones. An addition, I would appreciate it, if kindly you will provide all needed drivers for the Linux community for the P40, I'm sick of WINDOWS!!!

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

In Windows 7 when I check the Auto Play all media option, a dialog box comes up when I log in asking what I want to do about about an external storage unit. What I want to do is exclude it from auto play altogether. I isn't listed as a device, though. So how do I exclude it from auto play?

A:Exclude Storage Device From Auto Play in Windows 7

What is the external storage unit? Is it a USB drive, Card Reader, NAS drive? Is this device listed in Computer? Or Devices and Printers?

Under Windows 2000 Pro can I lock a user/group out of a control panel?

My current implementation is to change the permission for the user/group of the control panel (WINNT/system32/*.cpl). Don't know if this is the best way to do this but it surly will not allow the user into the control panel. But can the user still edit their own space of the registry? Either way, is there a better way? I was hoping the Group Policy Tool, but I couldn't find anything (but then again I didn't look to hard)

How do I set the default screen saver for all users?
I was able to look around the registry and found scrnsave (logon.scr)
Didn't want to change the setting thinking that was the screen saver for the login window
Next is the ScreenSaverTimeOut defined is second or minutes? 600 is default (15 minutes, seconds seems right)

Last, Can I disable auto mounting of networked drives?
I know of the "Don't attempt this" check box, if you decline a password, but that doesn't seem to hold if you remount during the user session. A alt solution to this could be auto dismount of all network volumes on logout? Is that possible? I thought there was a Shutdown/Logout folder (like Startup but executed at logoff) but I'm currently having a brain fart.

Thanks for your time and help in advanced.

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.

WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?
It;s a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 with Windows 8 installed

A:Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

> WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive
That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.
