I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

If the jack on the computer where the charger plugs into is loose, then you need to have the jack soldered back onto the motherboard by a local computer repair shop.

It is about a year since I bought my hp compaq notebook . Recently the battery icon on the notification area shows 'plugged in, but not charging' status even if the charger is not plugged in. The indicator light is always ON with light-white light which indicates battery full status while the charger is not plugged in. when I plug in the charger it will charge normally and shows orange-red light which indicates battery is charging.I tried a hard reset but it doesnt work. I tried to use the laptop with out the batter by plugging in the power cord, and insert the battery after a while, but no change as well.I am gussing there is a contact inside the power port on the laptop. I am so worried these may damage my battery, my laptop in the worest case. Any solution? Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Charger plugged in, not charging toshiba

If you take out the battery when the computer is totally shut down, and plug in the AC adapter and start the computer, does the light on the charger come on, some are green, some not....

And, does the computer work normally if you are using just the AC adapter?

I would not use a battery that charged only to anything but 100% and here is why> overheating can result and cause a fire, I have had one laptop battery explode and it is not a pretty scene.

The AC adapter might also be damaged, but just answer the questions and will try to help further. I buy this type of Toshiba adapter all the time, and can point you to some reliable but not over expensive ones.

I have a Vista Laptop that is not charging at times. The power jack it pushed in and both my chargers spark when I move the plug around so it could charge. I don?t know if it?s my laptop or the Charger. Should I get the power jack fixed, get a new battery or a new charger? Please Help!!

A:Laptop charger plugged in but not charging

Esmmy, look in the hole on your laptop where the power adapter would plug in and you'll see the silver power pin. Using a push button pen, put it on the end of the power pin and see if you can move the pin at all. Any movement on that pin means it's broken and the DC Jack needs to be replaced. Most DC Jacks are soldered to the motherboard and need to be repaired by someone experienced in desoldering and soldering.

If the DC Jack is broken, the power adapter won't charge your battery since it's not making a solid connection inside. Moving it around too much while plugged in could short something, cause further damage or even a fire.. Best to have it repaired by an experienced technician.

Yoga 510 (around 8months old) My laptop is working smoothly except for this weird problem, and this problem only started up today. So when using my laptop my screen will not display unless plugged into charger, you can hear it running and working the screen just isnt on. Plug in charger screen turns on, unplug screen turns off, plug it back in and screen will turn back on exactly where it was at prior to turning off. This happens in both tablet and laptop mode. Also noticed when trying to discover the problem that the charger is plugged in but not charging (this could be due to the fact that it is at 97% charged though so may not be relevant)  I have tried a reset (holding the power button in till it turns off/on) and run a scan through Lenovo health -Hardware scan (Everything came up clear). Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I came home and plugged it back in again, turned my laptop on and now it is telling me that I have the wrong battery or battery charger and so it will not charge. However, I know for a fact that both the battery and the charger are the ones that came with the laptop when my stepfather bought it new around three years ago. Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks

Hi ABHAYHENDRE,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Test with another adapter and battery and check.
Force the BIOS flash if required - http://dell.to/2hnhjs4
If the adapter is not detected, test another adapter. If the adapter fits in loose, replace the dc port - http://bit.ly/2hxR3OO - this is the part you need.
If nothing works, then I would suspect a motherboard fault.
You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ
My personal suggestion is that, if the motherboard is being replaced, then you could invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.

Hello, I have a 3 yr old Ideapad Z510(that came with Win8)which worked absolutely fine until recently. If I plug in the charger when the laptop is on, it abruptly turns off and would never boot again until I remove the charger. However, this is not how it behaves every time. There are some rare instances where I could still operate the machine with charger plugged in.  When turned off, battery is charging and also goes to full 100%. When turned on(battery mode) it does not drain rapidly - I could still get a fairly decent stand up time. So I am assuming the battery is good. I don't see any thermal issues either. Things I tried:-------------- > Tried with a different charger - no help.> Updated the firmware - no help.> Update the entire driver pack - no help.> Applied windows patches, reinstalled and also upgraded windows to Win 10 - no help.> Reseated the battery and associated cables - no help.  I am not sure if there is anything that I could do to at least diagonize the problem before I give it to the service station. Any pointers on this is much appreciated   Thanks much in advance.

All, my Inspiron 15 5000 15-5545 is having an error with the battery charger saying that it is not recognized and that the charger will not charge my computer.  I know that this is an official Dell charger (it is the charger that came with the laptop) - so there shouldn't be an identification issue.
I have noticed that there is a pin problem, however.  There are six pins in the laptop charging port (2 for charger identification in the middle and the four other pins that connect to the charger itself at the 3, 6, 9, and 12-o'clock positions).  Whenever I plug in my charger the pin at the 6-o'clock position gets bent upward towards the 2 identification pins.  This may also be bending the identification pins upward, but I am not sure because it looks like they are in the same place, just the 6-o'clock pin is not in the same place.
I believe that this may be the issue, and has this happened to many people before?  Is there a permanent solution to this?  Do I need to replace my charging port?

A:Inspiron 5545 AC charger not recognized (Battery plugged in, not charging)

It sounds likely there's damage to the DC port, yes.  You may want to try another adapter before replacing that.

Hello so my laptop (Precision 1350 Workstation) with windows 7 which i bought in September 2016 stopped charging after I used it with my docking station . It worked for a week or two prior to this and then I started getting a notification every time I put the laptop on the docking station that said "ac power adapter not recognized , use adapter of 65 watts or above" but the adapter was 130 watts. Even when the laptop was taken off the docking station and the ac adapter was just plugged into the wall it still won't charge at all. I made sure the bios was updated 1.11.4 and even checked for driver to update and ran the online diagnostics there was no problems but it still won't charge. A tech came out last Wednesday and replaced the motherboard and this fixed the problem for about a day but then when I put it back on the docking station the same problem occurred and it still won't charge. I even tried it on a different docking station but the same make and model as mine and the problem persists. Does anyone know what is wrong? The phone tecnicians and the technicians don't seem to know what to do

Symptoms:

1. It reads 99% available (Plugged in, not charging).
2. HP Battery Care Adviser tells me that the battery needs replacing.
3. Battery was losing a charge (Plugged in, not charging) whilst on the HP dock. I transferred it to the charge on the computer itself and it charged up to 99%. The dock still reads my peripherals (external hard drives) just fine.
4. I don't need portability with my notebook. The reason I have it is because I typically spend nine months of the year in one country and three months in another. Otherwise, I'd simply use a desktop. So, I've only used the battery without the charger in a handful of times.
5. Notebook is only eleven months old. I have no other problems.
6. I run Vista 32bit SP1
7. I read online that a BIOS flash may solve the problem. I'm not too keen on a BIOS flash; but I checked just to make sure, and yes, HP released a new BIOS 7-2009. My own is, of course, a year old.

Thoughts:

1. notebook runs fine; if it ain't broke don't fix it.
2. This computer is like the Berlin wall of my life. If this goes, the whole thing goes; so I tend to be paranoid.

What do you think? Do I get a new battery? Do I just be fastidious about backups and not worry about it? Your thoughts appreciated.

Thank you.

A:Laptop Charger reads "Plugged in, not charging"

If you don't use it on battery then I would say no need to replace it - its not required for the proper operating of the computer. It does provide one nice feature, if the power goes out then you can keep running the laptop and not have it power off on you and lose your data. However being less then a year old I would be contacting HP and complaining, a battery should last more then that. If HP advises a BIOS update when you talk to them then I would do it, if it breaks its their fault, but it doesn't affect the data on the drive which if you care about then you'll already have it backed up to at least one other location.

I just bought this laptop the other day refurbished from NewEgg, it was supposed to be a basic setup ( No DVD-R/W, BlueTooth, nVidia Graphics, Camera, Fax, the better resolution screen, etc). But lucky me they sent me one with all those features for the price of the basic model, my point being I REALLY don't want to send it back for a replacement so please try not to suggest it.
When I first got it I checked the battery and charger to see if it was Dell brand but unfortunately they were replacements like I expected (but the charger is the right voltage). My problem is when I plugged it up to the charger to activate Windows and install updates, after which I started to turn down the brightness from the Fn / arrow keys and when I got to a certain level of brightness the screen went black, after unplugging it and a restart I plugged it in again and it did the same thing again without me touching anything. So for a couple days I just didn't use it while it was charging.
Today I decided to update the BIO's to the latest version incase that was the problem (from A5 to A21 or something like that) and that requires the charger to be connected so I did which gave me the same result, only this time I realized the screen wasn't off it was the backlight  that was off. So having to use a flashlight to see the screen I updated the BIO's and while it was updating the screen was visible again but after it restarted the screen still stayed on but was flickering ... A:Dell Latitude E6420 screen flickers with charger plugged in?

Good day ,
Here in this situation the issue is prominent when the charger is connected .
Try working on the system with only battery connected to see if the issue is seen only when the charger is connected then its faulty charger issue.
I would suggest you to test the system's display in safe mode with networking as safe mode uses very minimal graphics .
Else update the video drivers on this system to do so go to support site .
Kindly confirm the video card installed on your system is NVS 4200M if it is then you can install the same by clicking on this link .
Also check if the issue is seen on an external monitor with and without the charger connected (This is done to confirm if the system board is working fine ) and initiate the LCD BIST (Buit in self test ) on the system by pressing the D-KEY while turning on the system (if solid colours are seen on the screen along with flickering then its a faulty screen ).
I would request you to try these steps on the system with and without charger .
Hoping to hear from you soon .
Kindest Regards ,

So I ran into the old plugged in, not charging problem with my laptop about a month back. I hoped it was the charger, but upon getting a replacement 65-watt charger, the problem persisted. I assumed the fiddly bits on the inside of the laptop had given up the ghost, as I've had that issue before, but when a friend plugged in his 90-watt dell charger it worked like a charm. I'd rather not have to go buy a new 90-watt charger, but I will if I have to.
Also, I suppose I should mention that I'm using a 5759 with no modifications. Also, I used to get an error message every time I plugged in a 65-watt charger though it doesn't show up anymore for whatever reason and I can't remember exactly what it said. Something about it not being recognized or somesuch. Same error message with 3 different 65-watt chargers.

I've recently had a few problems with my Dell Laptop. It says "plugged in, not charging". A couple times it started charging again randomly, but it hasn't in a while so my battery life keeps decreasing. I'm at 13% right now so I have to be careful to not knock the cord out or my computer will completely die. I'm not sure if I need a new battery or charger or what? I've been looking online for help and it seems quite a few people are having similar problems with their Dell laptops but it doesn't look like anybody else can figure it out either. I've noticed that people are buying new chargers and batteries and the problem is still there so I've held off on purchasing them as I don't want to pay for something that most likely isn't going to help.
About a week ago, when my laptop was actually charging for some unknown reason, it kept shutting off without warning while I was doing whatever. It would turn on just fine, but every 15-20 minutes or so it would turn off. This happened about 3 or 4 times. My laptop has shut down in the past but never that frequently and it was usually do to overheating, but on this particular day it was random and for no reason.
I reaaaaaaally don't want to have to buy a new laptop right now, so if someone could help me figure out what is wrong with this one that would be awesome

A:Dell - plugged in, not charging

I had a similiar issue with an HP laptop. If you haven't already, make sure the BIOS is up to date. When I contacted HP about mine, they said that it was a known issue and the BIOS update would fix it. I will say in mine, it didn't, but that is still something to look at.

That situation with my laptop typically happened if I let the battery die completely, then the next time it turned on, I would get that same message. Now to the fix on how I would get the battery to start charging again. I will say this will probably sound very weird, but it is something I read online that worked for multiple people. First, clean the battery contacts. Next, shut down the laptop, and pop the battery in and out about 30 times really fast. When I did this on mine, I simply held the battery release and popped it in and out. Turn on the laptop with the battery connected. Sometimes that will fix the problem. If it doesn't however, with the laptop on and running in Windows, pop the battery in and out really fast about 30 times again. After that, in my case, the battery would always show as charging again.

Once again, I know this sounds really weird, but it worked for me.

It's been almost a year since I bought my Dell Inspiron 14. Last month I lost my charger somewhere and bought a new one immediately. The new charger that I bought has same 65Watts as in original Dell charger. However, I bought the new one from a local retailer who said it's a originial one and cost was just 700rs(whereas in dell site and other stores, it was about 2500rs something).

After a month, I'm getting this 'plugged in, not charging' problem. Also whenever I boot the windows, it pops up a warning screen as 'the battery's type and (something else) cannot be determined. Use dell 65Watts or greater'. I'm not sure when since this problem is coming from, as it used to come at times when I was using the original charger too, I never really cared about this.

2 days back, I followed this advice- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx62t6qZ34U and it worked perfectly. I missed the last points though i.e., charging and draining the battery 3 times. Now today this problem has popped up again and advice given in that video is not working anymore.

Can someone help me to understand what's the problem is now?

Hi there, I have had my Dell for one year now with no problems, but all of a sudden it is not charging. It started on and off saying plugged in, not charging and now it says that permanently. This laptop is very important and as a college student I really can't afford it to be serviced. I tried a lot of the online suggestions and nothing worked. Thank you in advance!

So for the past few weeks my Dell XPS 15 doesn't charge when it is plugged in, and the battery gives the message "plugged in, not charging". I've looked at other similar threads and I've tried updating my BIOS and draining the batter while the computer is plugged in and nothing fixed the problem. What has been happening is that the laptop will eventually start charging after I leave it plugged in for 5-10 minutes but that has stopped happening. Is there any other fix someone can suggest to me?

Please list exact Dell model number and version of windows. Ex: Dell XPS 9550, windows 10.
You could type msinfo32 onto the search box to get the system information. In the meantime, I'd suggest you check the status of AC adapter and Battery's health in the BIOS by follow steps below:
1. Power off system.
2. Power on system, quickly start tapping F2 key continuously. You should be in the BIOS. The status of adapter usually listed under the main screen and Battery health listed under the Advanced tab or Battery information.
The adapter should say the adapter type, if it says 'Unknown' or 'None', then it's a issue with the adapter, and most likely needs to replace with a Dell genuine adapter that suitable for the system. Note: Wiggle the adapter's end while checking it in the BIOS. The battery health should say Excellent or Your Battery Is Performing Normally

My Dell Inspiron 15 does not start up when I power it on while it’s connected to the charger. The screen does not turn on and the laptop starts beeping.. 3 continuous beeps with a pause in between. Then, i turn off the charger and switch on the laptop on battery power, and it starts normally. Is it due to a faulty charger ? or is it due to a motherboard error?

I don't know how to solve this problem. Quickset keeps saying that my laptop doesn't recognize the AC adapter, and I can't afford to take the battery out of my laptop.

A:Dell XPS 15 (L521x) plugged in, but not charging

There are a few quick tests that you can run that should tell you if there is a problem with the AC adapter or something else.  To start plug in the AC adapter and start the notebook while tapping F12 and choose bios. On the main screen it should mention the AC adapter type,  it should detect the AC adapter and mention what the type of adapter it is, or it could read not detected.
Under the advanced tab in the bios look for Adapter warnings and change it to enabled, then choose the exit menu and choose save changes and exit. When the computer reboots do you still get an error about the ac adapter?
Re connect the power cable from the AC adapter and test on another power outlet and see if it makes any difference.
If none of the above steps seemed to make any difference it is likely that the AC adapter is failing and will need to be replaced.  If you have an spare AC adapter or one that you can borrow, test using the other adapter and see if there is a change.
One last thing to try is to flash the bios, you can download rev a16 here,  just understand that the update may not complete if there is a problem with the AC adapter or battery.
With these steps you should be able to find out if there is a problem with the AC adapter or with something else in the notebook. Please let me know what you find out.

Hi, this is my first post on these forums so please excuse me if I make a mistake :)

The other day, my computer seemed to stop charging, and I couldn't turn it on after it died. Now I have (with a screwdriver) pushed out the Power input Jack as I found it was to far in. The computer now accepts the power adapter to keep the battery on 0%, and not charge it.
The Error received is something like 'The AC Power adapter cannot be determined'
I've had the computer for a year and a half, and thus the warranty has ended. I really don't want to spend much money because honestly I have none. I don't know much about computer hardware, so if you can please try to use non-technical terms :)

Thanks in Advance,
Cormac

Hi Cormac,
Please check if the charging port on the laptop is loose. Connect an alternate AC Adapter to see if that works fine with the system. Alternatively, try the steps mentioned below:
*Check the AC Adapter in BIOS; check the ‘AC Adapter type’ status if it shows ‘Unknown/  Not Detected / 65W / 90W / 130W'.*If you get the status as 'Unknown / Not Detected' then reset BIOS to defaults:

Restart the computer, tap 'F2' key on Dell logo 4-5 times
This will take you to the main screen of BIOS
Press ‘F9’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’
Press ‘F10’ key once, highlight ‘Yes’, press ‘Enter’

Also, check the Battery Health Meter:

Right click on the battery icon on the taskbar
Choose ‘Dell Health Meter’
Click on ‘Battery Health’ tab
Examine the information shown in the window

Please reply if you have any questions.

I know I have found many people with this same problem but seemed to have tried everything I can imagine. My Dell laptop is at a 0% charge and says "plugged in, not charging." Here is what I have tried so far:

-New power adapter (with correct wattage)
-New battery
-Updated BIOS
-Uninstalled Compliant Control Battery Method and re-installed it
-Replaced daughter board

None of these have worked, could I have blown a fuse in my motherboard? the computer works great plugged in I just hate to get a new one because it is no longer portable unless I am close to an outlet. Any others with the same problem who had to try something different and it worked?

Thanks!

Have a 2-n1 that I purchased a year ago key came off got brother ( major in IT)  to replace the key. After a hour of him taking the back off key was not fixed, instead computer is plugged in but not charging  in addition to touch screen not working and system is still very sluggish. Contacted Dell the tech's reply was that motherboard had stopped working. Tech never did a remote diagnostic on the laptop either. We tried to restore default settings. Ideas on problem please.

Presumably the keyboard was replaced - if so, retrace the re-assembly to see if something like the DC jack or the display cable was left disconnected.

One day the battery had 30% charge, and I noticed it was not charging. I tried reinstalling the battery drivers, restarting the computer, changing AC adapters, taking out the battery, but the battery would not charge. However the battery would discharge perfectly fine. If i took out the charging cable, the computer would run perfectly fine. I read somewhere that updating the bios would solve the problem, but at that time i only had 8% charge and I need 10% charge to update the bios. Today, I randomly put the battery back in, and it started charging! However, later in the day my battery stopped charging. At this point I had enough charge to update the Bios and even AFTER updating the bios the battery STILL will not charge. I KNOW my battery is perfectly fine! It charged today and it discharges fine. I tried everything I would think off. Any ideas or help would be really appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

If the power supply is working, then the problem is the DC socket. Either the power board or the entire system board (depends on the model) needs to be replaced. The DC socket solder connections can fail because of stress on the DC power cord.
