Games freeze, but no fps or ms drops or spikes

Q: Games freeze, but no fps or ms drops or spikes

So for the past week, when i've been playing games, the games will freeze up every 1 minute or so, for around 3-6 seconds, then it will all catch up. while this happens there are no signs of FPS or MS changes, i've updated all my drivers, i have reinstalled my GPU, i make sure i have no other background programs running, but none of this has fixed it so far.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

For the past few days I've been on the hunt to try to find my problem and fix it. Yesterday I thought I finally fixed it after running atf cleaner then avg antispyware in safemode. All day yesterday my connection was fine and I was happy.. until I got on my computer the next day (today). The freezes were back! I'm pretty sure it has to do with a virus but I cant get rid of it. After running my scans from adaware, spybot, and avg they didn't find anything so I decided to try Panda's ActiveScan.. the free one thats online. I came across a virus called trj/jupillites.a that was in C:\Documents and Settings\Timmy\access It said it disinfected it but I think this is the problem. I think it's still on my PC and I can't get rid of it.. this is my latest HJT log:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 2:44:23 AM, on 11/30/2006Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\CTHELPER.EXEC:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\WINDOWS\syst... A:Random Freeze/lag/spikes In Online Games?

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.I see a clean log here, there are no signs of malware or anything that may cause the problems you are having. I recommend that you post your question in the following forum as you will recieve better help there. Let them know you have had your Hijackthis log checked, and it isn't a serious security issue.Windows XP Home and ProfessionalIf Panda disinfected the file it should be gone, if you rescan with Panda is the log clean? You are missing one important program on that computer - an antivirus! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer. AVG and Avast are excellent, free antivirus programs..Never install more than one antivirus on your system - several together can cause problems and decrease performance.

I've been getting these for awhile and they are extremely annoying and frustrating.. and since I play for money online for games like warsow and quake4 it can cause problems. It's possible it's not on my end but my ISP but everytime I talk with them they say everything looks fine in their stats. I began to scan my PC with adaware and spybot to remove a few bad files and it seems like I cleaned up most of it.

I'm just curious if anyone sees anything in this hijackthis log that can cause these problems:

Am not sure if I'm posting in the correct area, if not please suggest/or reroute my submission to the correct subheading. I've attempted to resolve this cpu usage problem with little/no success. A few months ago I noticed my system freezing, stalling and video streaming and playback would stutter, freeze and or stall with latency issues in abundance. I also noticed Windows Task Manager at start up revealed: Processes = 61, CPU = 0%, Memory= 41% I've vacuumed the system exhaust vent and use a house fan to assist airflow. Though I read many possible solutions, most were a bit more complex than I am comfortable with or were for XP or Windows 7.

Am not a gamer. I've ran numerous a/v, systematic defrag, registry, junk file, etc scans. I don't know how to “shut down” or turn off processes nor reduce the cpu usage which in some cases red line. Any and all assistance is appreciated and gratefully accepted. PS: Am a beginner at this so please go easy on me!

Could anyone help me with this? I'll experience random, what seems to feel like, lag spikes, which aren't actually lag spikes while playing games. I'd be playing in offline mode against the computer and I'd have smooth gameplay for minutes before hitting this "lag spike" which would last minutes before it goes back to normal gameplay for a few minutes and then back to a lag spike, and this cycle would continue. This is for games that are extremely below my computer specs as well, so far, this has occurred with TF2 and alien swarm. my drivers are all updated, is this perhaps a software problem since problems with playing games only occurred once i went from windows XP to windows Vista months ago.

I recently went to Windows Vista 64 after upgrading my computer as I figured what the hell, I'm not going to see a performance drop. So far, I'm happy with the switch and indeed have not noticed a drop in performance in any of the games I play.

However, seemingly at random Vista will just freeze for anywhere from 1 to 5 seconds. If there is music playing in the background it'll repeat the half or second or so of song where it got stuck and my mouse does not respond.

Is this a common issue that can be resolved?

Thanks,
Evan

I urgently need some help with this issue I'm having... The worst thing is, this is a new PC and I've just freshly installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on it.

I've already updated ALL my device drivers to the latest available, as well as applied all available Windows updates, yet it still happens.

These weird CPU Spikes can occur seemingly randomly, and thereafter causes my OS to inevitably freeze or become EXTREMELY unresponsive at best. I am unable to Restart the computer (it either hangs at logging off or doesn't seem to be able to shutdown (left it trying to shutdown for 1 hour).

The onset has happened to me so far in these scenarios:

1) Just surfing the internet
2) Playing a video file
3) Leaving the computer idle (It was frozen when I got back to my PC)
4) Changing control panel settings

I was lucky enough to capture and save the screenshots showing it in Task Manager. The culprit process seems to be the 'SYSTEM' process (which shows only 25% CPU usage, however as you can see my ACTUAL CPU usage spikes all the way to 100%!

Hi ive been getting alot of problems recently with random spikes of lag which freeze and jitter my pc for 3-4 seconds before returning to normal , this only occurs while playing games. Not sure if this is a temperature issue as its currently running at around 60-70 degrees on both the cpu and motherboard

I recently opened my pc to clean and remove dust when this first started occurring and this did no solve it , im not sure whats going wrong so any guidance would be appreciated .

Specs :

Amd Phenom x4 9650
ASRock k10n78m
ATI radeon hd 5770
4gb ram ddr2
Windows 7 32bit

Not the best pc in the world but has ran perfectly until recently on all games , so not sure if i need to invest in some cooling stuff or what im not sure.

A:Random FPS drops and screen freeze

Your issue is most likely heat related.

Boot into the BIOS and post the temp and voltage readings.

What program are you using to monitor the temps in Windows?

Install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the temps at idle and under load.

If your temps are still high after cleaning then it may be time to clean and re-apply some thermal paste.

I'm having problems with all online games where my ping will spike from 50 to 800 or so, it all happens at random. This is NOT an internet problem as I have played on LAN servers that were right next to me and I still had this spikes so it looks like a problem with hardware (not sure which forum to post this in but since it involved games i posted it here). I am directly connected to my router and am using the NIC on my motherboard. I've tested my RAM and GPU for problems and both work fine. I've bought a dedicated PCI NIC and I still had problems with that. I have also tried a USB wireless adapter and still get the spikes. This leads me to believe that there is a problem with the motherboard but before I go out and buy a new one I wanted to get some opinions from people here so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried turning off WIreless zero config, but that doesnt work

Hi and welcome to the site!

i would have stayed with the DSL connection. as for gaming i stay away from Wireless when internet gaming. too much demand on the network and too many issues that could arize during gameplay.

When you connect to the internet make sure you have no extra applications running in the background such as antivirus updates etc. Does Verizon FIOS offer a DSL connection or is it ADSL connection?

Hope this helps

how does one fix this problem, i have closed everything running, ran ccleaner done the usual checks. it used 2 only be a little bit every now and again (before i formatted) and now it's made all my games unplayable. to the point of freezing every 1 - 2 seconds when ever i move. if i dont move or do anything it settles down but the second i move again it freezes even before i get 2 turn

these are not network related, happens in single player games also

Hello.
So my problem is a real strange one to me, i've never had one like it before.
All of my online games, from Counter Strike to Left 4 Dead to WoW experience lag spikes that jump the ms from 60 to 80 or 90, sometimes more. Enough to Cause a sudden pause that can last from 1-2 seconds, then resuming later on. In CS this results in me "reequipping" all my items after the lag spike, as if i've just picked up a cart load of guns n ammo. I've checked Frame rates in Counter Strike, and they appear to be fine. None of this happens in my non-online games.
I've done several virus and spy-ware scans and removed what i could find. I still have this issue. It started around the time I installed Windows Vista's Service Pack 2. Since then i have uninstalled it, but that has not fixed anything.

I've tried updating and reinstalling drivers for both the network card and the video card, and any other related hardware i could think of. Nothing seems to work. I switched the connection from the router to directly from the cable modem, while also resetting it, to no avail.

Any clue what It might be?

I Run Vista 32bit laptop (Alienware) with a 2.0 ghz intel core 2 , 4 gigs ram
The network card is a Marvell Yukon 88e8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
The ISP is bresnan.

I am having a very annoying and obtrusive issue with random hiccups or mini freezes while playing all my games. Hopefully one of you will feel like racking your brain and help a fellow gamer out. Most recently: Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm, and GTA 5. It doesn't matter what graphics quality I set each to, every couple minutes I get a complete freeze for maybe 1 second where the fps drops to 0-15. While seemingly random, it is consistently happening anywhere between 1-3 minutes apart. All other game time is a solid 60fps or more. I monitored MSI Afterburner and noticed sharp spikes to 0% GPU usage on the graph. Temps on both GPU and CPU cores seem reasonable and I ran an Intel CPU stress test (passed) and a Furmark GPU stress test (no issues). I guess I just don't know where to look or what steps I could take. I have already reformatted my SSD and reinstalled Windows 7 x64 a couple times, tried the latest 3 Nvidia drivers, and checked if there were issues with the titles I have been trying. I don't have other parts I can swap with to test if it is the GPU, CPU, RAM, MOBO, or whatever else, so it is very frustrating. There's no doubt there are countless threads regarding similar issues I'm experiencing, but mine seems strange enough. Hopefully you can point me in the right direction. My current setup is as follows:

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970
CPU: I5-4690K 3.50GHZ
RAM: G Skill Ripjaws 2x4gb
MOBO: Gigabyte z97x-sli

Wasn't sure where to post this. So, let me start by describing my setup and giving specs for my two computers. I have a 15mb connection with time warner cable and have the modem connected to a netgear router. I have a hardwired desktop and a wireless laptop. The lag spikes only occur on the desktop. My online games run perfectly smoothe on the wireless laptop. The specs on my desktop are A LOT higher than the desktop. Desktop - Intel Core i7, 2.8 ghz, 9 gig ram, nvidia gtx 460 vid card. Laptop - intel core i5, 2.5 ghz, 6 gig ram, nvidia geforce gt550 m. I have tested Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counterstrike: Source on both computers. All 3 of those games ran perfectly fine on my laptop, but had lag spikes every 3-4 seconds in all 3 of the games on my desktop on every single server. My ping was below 50 on both computers and never went below that. What could be the cause of my desktop lag spiking like this? Now, I did get a virus on my desktop a couple weeks ago and had it cleaned with Combofix. Not sure exactly when I started noticing this lag spike though.

Forgot to mention, running Windows 7 64-bit on both computers

Decided to just reformat my desktop and everything is working fine now.

Hey,

I'm currently playing Star Wars: The Old Republic and Smite but I get lag spikes in both of them. My latency is generally steady and low, between 20-60ms on both games but I get spikes of 1000ms+ that look like I've disconnected randomly. They often happen when I use abilities, interact with nps or open in game menus etc.

My brother plays Star Wars as well on the same net but he doesn't lag unless he's playing with me. I asked for help on both the forums of the games and got no replies.

Hm...Did you remember to set the game's graphic options? Sometimes if you put it high, it causes lag on the games. I have small lag on Rainbow Six:Vegas 2. If your playing a FPS game, try setting to medium or low. You may turn off "Shadow".
Problem lies on the amount of space, ram, and free space of your Video/Graphics card. The more you install games, the more space it takes up on RAM, your local disk (C: or G: or other), and your graphics card.

My problem is the connection cuts out, mostly when I am playing games such as Red Faction. My internet works OK, i am able to access most sites via Mozilla Firefox and sites that I cant access, i CAN if i load up the AOL browser. All is OK but when i start playing games, the connection is OK, i get 30 ping for about 1 minute, after that ALL HELL BREAKS LOSE and my ping jumps into the 9000 region, it hangs there for a while, then after 2-3 mins it comes back down to 40. This cycle repeats.. and its VERY annoying vbecause it makes games unplayable.

I also notice that when i enter a game and i dont spawn (dont start playing), the ping stays at a good 40-50 and doesnt change. When I do start playing, after about 20 secs the ping jumps to 9000 and my connection drops for 1min and then it returns.

The issue:

At times the GPU will spike to 100% and freeze the entire system, usually preceeded by the mouse "dragging" or slowing down and stopping. If I do not quickly stop using the mouse after the slowdown begins, the entire system will usually freeze and cannot be recovered without power cycling the PC. If I stop using the mouse in time, the system will recover to normal after a few seconds. (if playing sound or music when the slowdown starts, the sound is caught in a loop until the spike ends). This occurs often with nothing more than Outlook and a browser window open, more often with several applications running as is usually the state I work in, although not related to games or anything that heavily taxes my system. The offending process is usually csrss.exe (usually when running my ArcMap application), chrome.exe or firefox.exe (usually the only browsers I use) and occasionally dwm.exe. The firefox.exe process pic attached was just after resuming after suspend, which triggers the issue at times as well (although the browser related issue most often happens while actually browsing).

I have caught this pattern several times in the Process Explorer (see pics):
GPU usage spiking to 98%-100% (with preceding usage only around 1%)
The offending process appears to only be "using" 50%-70% of GPU during the spike
At the same time or just following the usage spike, there is a sudden drop in GPU dedicated memory.

Topic pretty much says it all. It happens when I play numerous games - Counter-Strike, Warcraft III, etc. This has never happened when I had Windows XP. I've searched the forums for a solution but have yet to find one. I'm using 'Win Optimizer' right now and I still get spikes (more frequent as of lately). Anyone know a "fix" or solution for this problem?

OS: Vista x64 Ultimate
Wireless router: Linksys WRT54G
Wireless adapter: Linksys WUSB54GC

A:Vista x64 lag spikes while playing games

I had a similar problem after upgrading to Vista 64 with a FalconAF. In my case, it ran smooth, but every minute or so, I would suffer from lag. Turned out that it was my Saitek x52 joystick profiler program. It was using 50% of my CPU power. Research found that this was a common problem with my Saitek and what caused it. I modified my x52 Falcon profile to avoid that issue and all is well now (running at over 200 FPS ... smooth).

Anyway, it could be something minor causing your issue. I suggest you run a CPU monitor program to check resources before, during and after running your program to see if something small is causing your grief. Thats how I figured out my Saitek profiler program was the problem in my case.

I just used the built in CPU monitor that comes with the sidebar and was suprised to see when I exited Falcon that my CPU was running at 50% when I was doing nothing and tipped me off to a the problem.

So, lets start with Hello.
I would appreciate any help on the subject.
The problem: I've recently bought this awesome new gaming computer (specs later on)
and I got some new games on it such as; Crysis 3, FarCry 3, Payday 2, The Witcher 2, and on.
After about 10-20 minutes of gaming, I start noticing lag spikes in the game as in - momentarily FPS drop, which are pretty frequent, but aren't extremely massive that freeze my screen, but in irritating little stops of 0.05 secs every other second. they are eye-noticeable but I have no idea how to better describe them.
Now to my (pretty much what I think is awesome top 5% world computer) SPECS:
-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570 [email protected] (4CPUs) 3.80GHz.
16.0(GB) RAM. 64x. Win 7 Home Premium SP1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660. my screen is Samsung's SyncMaster T190.

I've monitored my computer's temp using HWMonitor, and nothing seems too high. the CPU keeps going on +- the same temp while gaming and while not.

Thanks for any help !

A:20 minutes into gaming - lag spikes in games

If you could provide us with the actual temps (numbers) it would be helpful. But, firstly, when something like this occurs. It's good to do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the latest graphic drivers. Is this something you've already tried?

Also, what settings are you trying to play these games on? While the GTX 660 is a pretty decent card. You can't expect it to play at MAX settings with desirable frame rates.

Starting today..

Something is wrong with my Sony Vaio FW series laptop.. I get major FPS spikes in any game I attempt to run (Dragon Nest, Audition), with FPS dipping down to ~10 every five seconds. When I check Task Manager, it's the games that are taking up the most CPU with overall CPU usage at 90%+. This is really strange and abnormal as I had never had any problems with those games taking up CPU and fps spiking until today (they ran fine yesterday).

Between yesterday and today.. I used compressed air to clean my laptop's fan, and I visited some movie watching sites (which resulted in some popups appearing). I'm unsure if the problem can be attributed to a virus, but I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes and did a deep clean on Advanced System Care, none of which helped fix the problem. Firefox, Skype, and other applications appear to run as quickly and smoothly as they did before.

However, I've gotten three BSODs in the last 30 minutes, and my laptop appears to be overheating:

Here is my Hijack This Log : x

Any help at all is appreciated! Please let me know if you need me to provide more logs or more information, thanks.

EDIT: I understand that a system restore will likely solve all problems, but I want to save that as a last resort.

EDIT1: I think the BSODs were a result of me running CPUID HWMonitor to check for the temperatures - each BSOD occurred right after or soon after I ran it. I'm unsure why running that specific program triggers... Read more

A:Sudden 100% CPU and FPS spikes in games + BSOD

A system restore to a point when it was working will rule out the laptop hardware if the games run fine after that. A system restore will also not mess with any installed programs. Have you looked to see if any Windows updates may have been applied tat may coincide with the issue?

Hi I was wondering if this was the right place to ask this, since I've been having problems with latency with my internet in online games, namely on the STEAM program. I'll be playing in a game and I'll have decent latency of about 40-50 but then either a few seconds or minutes later it will spike to 1000 - 2000 latency for like 2 seconds than go back down.. and this is constant, it will stop sometimes but it will always start up again. I'm not sure if this is a virus problem or what, I've already scanned my computer and everything and it just affects my online gaming, it just gets frustrating playing an FPS game and then all of a sudden lagging for a split second and then being killed. A little help or insight on this problem would be nice, thank you.

I am also using Windows XP 32-bit

Do you have any background programs which might be hogging your resources? Do you use any internet related programs such as P2P applications? Try disabling all startup programs and non-essential services, reboot, try your game and see if it helps.

Hello

I have a wireless network (802.11g) and I get lag spikes every few minutes when playing online games. Very annoying! Any ideas?

A:regarding wireless networking and lag spikes during games

Hard to say, really. Wireless connections drop packets every so often, so you may just have to deal with it.

If you're running SP1 (XP) then disable 802.whatever authentication in the properties because SP1 has issues with that. You may also try a different channel. Perhaps some network close to you is interfering. (Or a 2.4 gig phone or something)

Hi, i am experiencing ping spikes whilst I am playing online games and I am looking for any assistance in solving this problem.

I usually play on severs with a ping of less than 125, but randomly whilst i am mid-game my ping will begin to spike to around 500-600 which lasts for around 2 minutes then it falls back to down to my original ping.

This problem only occurs in Windows 7. My router is a Netgear DG834Gv2.

What carrier? Also are you in a city or small town etc? Might help locating where the loads are coming from. Also, have you contacted your carrier letting them know whats going on? They can check to see if its on their end.

I had that problem some time ago, when I called them it turned out the lines were actually brittle and old, and needed replacement, the morning dew was causing my internet to no longer work until the afternoon sun hit it!

I accidentally downloaded a bad Trojan which caused my computer to run slowly. I couldn't log into any websites or even use Google, and many websites did not even open.
However after running a trial of Kaspersky everything has mostly fixed, and after I restarted my computer a few times I can go onto FireFox and log into my e-mail and all websites work again.
However, when I use Google all my search results redirect me to another search engine or random website.
Also, while viewing any videos or playing any video games every few seconds it freezes and lags resulting in really jittery gameplay/playback.
I know it's not internet because I made a LAN game in Counter-Strike and the same thing happened.
These are a couple of problems and there could be more.

EDIT: The video thing is not necessarily true, I just watched a streaming vid off of Gizmodo right now and it worked fine. But earlier today it was acting up.

Hi there! This Saturday I received my new Ideapad 700 and I couldn't be more happy about it (just moved to the UK and didn't have a laptop/pc for 3 weeks) but there seems to be an issue I just can't resolve. Let's get to the problem :  The first thing I did was to make sure that all my drivers were up to date and all the necessary updates were done. After that I proceeded to download Smite to test out how this entry level gaming machine was performing in a relatively light game. After booting it up and making sure that all the settings were set to max I tried playing a practice match against bots to see if there are any issues. At first everything was perfect, getting 85 FPS+ and very happy about it, but then I noticed random stuttering. What seems to be causing it are new "new" icons on the screen. For instance when I open up the shop menu,or when an enemy is being killed my screen just freezes sometimes for 0.5 seconds and sometimes for even more than 1. At first I thought that this was internet lag but then, after installing Portal (yes, the 2007 Portal) to see if either my internet connection or the graphics were causing it I noticed the same thing when something "new" was happening.  Solutions I've tried. Downloaded and installed every update for Windows. Uninstalled and reinstalled Nvidia drivers Set the Nvidia GPU as my main GPU on every game I've tried (Note that this is quite likely not the cause of the problem s... Hey. This is an awful issue for me I've been having.

I may open a browser and it will work fine for a while. Or I may be browsing and it takes 10 seconds just to highlight whatever I'm hovering my mouse over. I check CPU usage and it's at 100%...

Usually I will play a game of sc2 and it will be chugging along at 65-110 fps on lowest and then suddenly lag... freeze and jump. Then maybe 2 games later I play through a whole game at 90 fps.

I recently REFORMATED so it is NOT a virus issue or a ****ed up registry issue or similar.

I'm using AMD Athlon 64x2.

Windows Vista 32 bit. Service pack 2.

Please help me, this is killing me

I recently bought a new laptop and it was horribly laggy when I played games like MapleStory and Audition. The screen was really slow.

I did everything I could to improve the performance speed for it (uninstalled programs I didn't need, deleted unwanted files, Disk Clean Up, scanned Disk for errors, Disk defragment, scanned for spyware/adware/viruses, clean registry, blocked some programs from starting when Vista is turned on). It worked pretty well, and it stopped the lag, BUT now I have this horrible lag spike. My screen will randomly freeze for a second and resume. I play on a wired connection, and I use my dorm's internet, so the connection speed is really fast. What can I do to fix this problem?

My computer specs are

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Model: HP Pavillion dv9500 Notebook PC
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 1.70 GHz
Memory (RAM): 1983 MB

I have Roadrunner cable internet and have never had any trouble out of it while on my computer. However when I play games on my Xbox, like Halo 2, about once every 2 minutes I will get a huge lag spike. There is a connection bar in the game and it goes from green to yellow to red. I'm in the green when the games start but i will shoot down to red for just about half a second and during that half second I cant do anything. This never happens for more than half a second though. I've ran TCP Optimizer, power cycled my modem several times, and I am direct connected to my xbox, although i have a 30 ft wire running to it. Is it possible I have a bad spot in my wire or my ethernet port on my xbox is burnt out? Thanks for the help.

A somewhat conflicting story. You state you have a direct connection, yet you have no issues on your PC. That would require a router to run both. So, which is it?

Also, TCP optimizer will only affect your settings on your PC, not your X-Box.

I play CSS, Americas Army, and Call of duty 4 on my laptop. I usually run cod4 and css at 125 frames while I play and America's Army is capped at 85. Every 5 minutes or so of gameplay my framrate drops to about 20-30 for about 10-20 seconds. This causes some significant problems during match play.I have attached my dxdiag to this post.

I shut down my laptop every night, I have it in an air conditioned room and it sits on a laptop cooler. I unplugged my external harddrive and updated all of my drivers 2 days ago. I have also turned all of the graphics to low and I cannot stop these frame drops.
