I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings,

I am in desperate need for some assistance. My laptop recently has been giving this message before reaching the desktop: "A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart. I have tried restarting multiple times (including manually restarting), but I ended up receiving the same error. My operating system is Windows XP.

What can I do to approach this problem? I would be very grateful for any assistance.

hi, do you have a diagnostics partition on your inspiron, on mine I press F12 as the computer boots. If you do, run the extended test on the hard drive. At this point I should ask if your important files/pics etc are backed up as any test on a failing hard drive is intensive. You ask if your hard drive "just crashed", have you tried restarting to see if you have access.

Hello,
I have a Dell Latitude E7450 with Windows 10. I am unable to get to the login screen as the following error message comes up "A disk read error occurred Pres Ctl+Alt+Del to restart" I do this and get the same error message each time. I did hold F12 so I can get to the boot options. I ran the diagnostics and it completed with no issues found. "All tests passed"
Any ideas of how I can fix this issue?
Boot mode is set to Legacy. Should I change it to Secure Boot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A:Latitude E7450 - Error message "A disk read error occurred"

Run the extended - not just quick - diagnostic on the hard drive (F12 at powerup).
No, you cannot change to UEFI/Secure Boot without a complete reload of the operating system.

I turned on my PC today for the first time in maybe 6mo, slow to boot up but that's expected. Got maybe ten minutes into using it (just fine, might I add. Linked to wifi, etc) and Norton popped up needing to restart the computer. Hit restart now, ten minutes
go by, PC is still trying to shut down. Black screen but the fan is running. I shut it off completely, push the power button again, and get the disc error. Try to restart twice with CtrlAltDel but same error. Finally soft reset (or try to, no indication that
holding the power button does anything) and then got the "Error loading operating system" screen. Now depending on how I restart it (trying to boot from the BIOS menu or boot menu) I get the disc read error but eventually come back to the OS error.

Nothing can get me into the system, period. I'm doing this from a secondary non-PC device. Any help is appreciated. I can get by on software fixes but I'm completely useless with hardware so all of the quick fix tips I've vaguely read have mentioned removing
things from the actual console which I'm hoping I won't have to do.
Please help thanks

A:Disk Read Error Occurred!!

hello ,

you may need to defragment or

what you need to do is run a scan disk

select (my computer) by left clicking it then right click the icon for your harddrive / in the drop down menu select (properties) then the (tools) tab / then in the (error -checking ) select (check now) then select both boxs / then select (start) you will then be asked to check at next boot /select (yes ) then close out the windows / then reboot

now when your system starts a scan will start / do nothing / it will take about 45 min to an hour

at the end of the scan it will give you all type of info then restart / then it will give you more info telling you if it fixed the error or not

then it will load windows

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 910 netbook for the second time. The first time the woman brought it in to me it gave me the error "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Naturally I first thought, "oh bad hard drive". Replaced the hard drive, it started working fine. Fast forward a couple months to this passed Monday. She comes in again and has the same exact problem. Same error. The BIOS is A04. Intel Atom processor. Checked the CMOS battery and it is fine. Ran Fixboot and Fixmbr. Booted from a Windows XP disc to get to the command prompt to do those. I believe the first time I worked on it I had tried reinstalling Windows which did nothing. May end up doing that again just to try it. It loads so far as to showing the Dell logo with the options to go to setup and or boot order.

A:A disk read error occurred...

Run diagnostics on the drive, and replace it again if it's bad. Why did two drives fail in a few months? No way to know without knowing what the owner is doing with the computer. You'd be surprised what people do with their computers that they don't think is relevant information for a technician.

Yeah I know, there have been plenty of threads about this subject made in the past, and I have read most of them but none of the solutions listed did not fix my problem so if someone could try to help me that would be appreciated.

So yeah, basically here's the Info:

My laptop was running fine this morning until my sister came in and being pissed at me, she aggresively pressed a lot of keys and shut down the comp (using the On/Off Button).

Then when I tried to turn it on again I get
" A Disk Read Error Occurred
Press CTRL+Alt+Del to restart".

I have tried the following:

1. Put in the recovery disk, and it did not read it, the following Error Came up:

" Windows Boot Manager

Info: Windows encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to
your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage
device while the device is in use.

Status: 0xc00000e9 "

2. Accessed BIOS and tried to "Load Setup Defaults" and then changed the Boot order to

1. HDD
2. CD/DVD
3. FDD
4. LAN
5. USB Memory

And no difference, still didn't work.

So yeah, none of the above has worked and so I don't really know what to do.
I really need the information on my Hard Drive by tonight/tomorrow morning if Possible.

Thanks so much guys :x

Hi,

Custom built system, Primary IDE connects to HDD Hitachi, Seconday IDE connects to Master DVD Burner 1.

I opened my case, put in a 2nd DVD Burner in on Secondary IDE Slave. Fired the machine up, and the entire Secondary IDE fails to pick up both DVD's.

I put it back the way it was, I swapped cables, ran the HDD from secondary IDE, tested the DVD's on the Primary IDE, and my conclusion is that I've somehow damaged the Secondary IDE from picking up any device.

Now I am running the new DVD burner as Primary Slave and the HDD as Primary Master, I boot up and get

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Strange thing is I got a ntoskrnrl.exe is missing or corrupt before this but now only a disk read error occurred message is occuring.

First thing first, threw HDD into my main machine and file system is entirely intact, backed up the HDD with Acronis, put in back in the original machine.

Fired up XP Pro Setup CD, repair install, after copying files and reboot, same error.

Booted with the Ultimate Boot CD, Diagnostics on HDD, ran the Hitachi tool and it crashed to the Dos Prompt. Retried with HDAT2 and am currently running a Bad Sector Test. Nil Warnings or Bad Sectors.

I'm going to put into the main machine as your reading this and try booting from it, to see if the same error comes up. Im thinking either damaged Mobo or maybe the BIOS had manual settings applied and when I swapped the HDD IDE channels, they were lost?

So, about 2 weeks or so ago my PC was working perfect, no issues whatsoever. Then about 2 - 3 days after I went on my PC and things just froze up, I couldn't shut down properly because it was just stuck froze. So I shut down using the button, but when I turned it back on I got "Disk Read Error Occurred". So I left my PC off for a while and it worked again after a few restarts, but it seems to keep coming back, my PC also sometimes freezes up.

Would appreciate any help, thank you.

A:Disk read error occurred.

Hi,

That appears to be a problem with your hard disk.

Do the following:

1. Click Start
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
4. In the command window that opens, type chkdsk /R and hit enter.

You will be prompted whether you wish to schedule and disk check at next startup, choose YES, then reboot your PC. Make a note of the chkdsk that occurs at boot and post the details back here.

Install and run CrystalDiskInfo - take a screencapture image of what the program reports for your C: and post it here.

I'm running a Win XP Pro Machine with a 40G WD HDD on an ABIT KR7A-133 mobo, which is completely on the fritz. Was working on the computer today and it crashed. It would not boot up for about 20 minutes - the HDD light remained on though. After able to boot I now get the message "A Disk Read Error Occurred" then it asks to reboot by c-a-d. Whenever I try to use my Win XP CD for Recovery it gets to the "System Checking Hardware" and then goes blank. Here's what I've done:

Tried to use Win XP Recovery - Can't even access it (changed boot sequence to allow for CDROM to be 1st)
Swapped memory
Took off slave drive and reset jumpers to Master
Ran Western DIgital HDD Diagnostics - no errors
Tried to put HDD as a slave into another computer - no drive letter assigned
Replaced ribbon for new one
Cleared and Reset CMOS

The BIOS recognizes the HDD by the way. Everything looks good there. I used an old Win 98 boot disk and used FDISK - the drive is recognized and set to Active.

I did have some boot errors that chkdsk repaired a couple of days ago and there were some odd things happening after that like missing icons and a random shutdown.

ALL I want to do is to somehow be able to access ONE stinking document that I have to turn in to class on Monday. After that I could care less...

Is there anything I am missing? Any suggestions?

A:disk read error occurred - help

UPDATE -

I tried everything I could think of and then downloaded Get Data Back for NTFS. I followed the directions to a T. I took out my bad HDD and put it as a slave on another working computer, made sure it was seen in BIOS (which it was) and booted up to windows on the working HDD (Windows did not detect the bad HDD). I ran the program and it was able to scan my "bad" HDD and provide me access to my files. I gladly paid $79 to be able to copy my one stinking file, some pictures and a couple of downloaded programs that I did not want to have to download again to the functioning HDD. So, thankfully I got my data back with this program.

I still have to deal with my blasted unfunctioning HDD though.... I have no clue what is wrong with it or if it can even be restored. Perhaps I should just get a new one. Any ideas on what to do with the non-functioning HDD? Coaster? Door stop? Seriously, do you think it can be restored if that program was able to access the c: drive and all the files within it?

Make sure there are no external devices connected (USB). If there are none, you are probably looking at a dead or dying hard drive. When you first turn on the machine press F12 and see if you get to the boot menu. From there you should have options to run some diagnostics on the hard drive.

It's most likely that this infection has caused severe damage to the ability of your system to boot. Without being able to remove the malware (in Windows), there's not much that can be done unless one of the helpers has experience removing virus infections outside of Windows. I would suggest slaving your hard drive to another computer (that has up to date antivirus protection) and copying your essential data off of it.After that, if you're still interested in cleaning off the malware, I'd suggest something like the tools available in the Ultimate Boot CD (available for free here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/Otherwise I'd bite the bullet, pull out the Compaq restore CD's and try a system restore. Also, at some point, you'd be wise to also run a bootable diagnostic on your hard drive (available from the hard drive manufacturer's website) - just to be sure this isn't a hard drive failure.

Hello guys, I need help.

Just last week, I noticed my pc suddenly freezes in the middle of a movie or while playing a game, at first I thought it was just lag or something, till I realized it was my hard drive somehow failing.

I have two harddrives on my pc, main is 320G and a slave drive of 2tb. most of my files were saved on the slave drive (I only have the system files on the master drive), and upon checking with a hard drive tool I noticed that my 2tb drive had some bad sectors in them (that's where the game and the movies were located, so.. figures)

I did a checkdisk utility and also reinstalled the game to the masterdrive just to be sure, was planning to back up the slave drive *but 2tb is hard to back up huhu*

anyway, just a couple of hours ago, my pc suddenly restarted showing the "disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart" message, and goes on a loop, never entering the windows page.

most of the sites I have visited says that usually this is caused by a failing hard disk. I am appalled to hear that both of my hard drives have failed at almost the same time. Upon checking with the hdd utility my master drive seemed to be in a healthy state and didn't have any warning signs of a failing hard drive.

What are the ways I could remedy this? and what caused this issue? is this coincidence that both drives failed at the same time, or something else is making the drives fail?

Please help???

Run the hardware diagnostics to confirm the hard drive has faults. Sounds like it has.
You may have a diagnostics CD for your system, or try starting the diags from boot options. I know that on Dell systems if you start tapping F12 as soon as you switch it on, you get a diags option.
DBAN is really for when you are disposing of hard drives. If you are setting up Windows from scratch, there's a format option just after the disk partition bit.

I'm assuming this a hard drive problem, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Nothing has been touched or replaced inside the tower, and nothing has been loaded onto the computer recently. There is a very large program on her computer, however.

Any guidance would be helpful. Also, any idea about whether we will be able to recover her documents? She has not been the best at backing up her files!!!

I just ran into one of these the other day. The partition on the HD is toast basically, however there is a utility called ERD Commander that I used which was able to copy the data off this drive onto another drive.

The program can be purchased from www.winternals.com.

I recently installed a new HD in a laptop that i am fixing up. i put in the windows xp home edition cd and went through all the steps, i even deleted the partition that was on there and made a new one and installed xp on that. after the computer rebooted to go to the next step an error appeared saying "disk read error occurred press ctrl, alt, del to restart. i did this over and over again. i went to the recovery console and tried everything you can think of and then reinstalled xp and the same thing happened. WHAT CAN I DO?!?!?

A:DISK READ ERROR OCCURRED!! what do i do?

Hi guitarfreak5892 !

Since this is a laptop you'll need the manufacturer's installation disks, retail install disks will lack the proper drivers for your hardware and the problem could be with the SATA controller drivers. What's the brand and model of the laptop ? You can order the recovery disks for a small fee on their support website.

Hi All,
Running Windows XP Home on Dell Mini 910.
On Start up:Message"A disk read error occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart."
I do that.
I select:
0 selected
Boot Menu on 0:Select Hard Drive:Same message as above appears.
Boot Menu on 0 selected:Select:CD/DVD/CD-RW it loads file from re-install disc as far as to"Examining 7327 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi" and then halts.
Nothing else is working except on selecting Enter setup from Boot menu I get set up utility.
Whats UP?

I suggest you visit the website of your hd manufacturer and download their diagnostic utility. Burn it to cd and run it.If for some reason you can't do that, you can boot to the XP CD, choose the FIRST repair option (which will take you to the recovery console) and run chkdsk /r

Hey all,
I have a Sony Vaio desktop with XP sp2. I was on my desktop lastnite and went away for a couple mins to come back to the computer frozen. I tried everything I could think of over about two hours to get it to come back to life without unplugging it. Well guess what...I had to unplug it...I know I know but there wasn't any other way to get it back. Well when I first turned it back on it took me to what looks like a DOS/BIOS screen. It ask me to hit F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. F1 use to take me to Windows sign on and F2 still takes me to AwardBIOS Setup Utility. Well I hit F1 and comes to a screen saying " A disk read error occurred" "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Well I type that and it takes me back to the F1/F2 screen again. It's a viscious cycle. How can I get back to Windows without a Recovery CD. I bought the computer a couple years ago used from my friend, but he didnt include any disc with it or had any to give. Thanks for your help as it is greatly appreciated.

I get the "A disk read error occurred" message in Window 7 boot up.
In some weird fashion when I hit F9 to use my motherboard's recovery disk and it asks me to install the disk and then I reset my computer without doing anything, it works.
When I restart my PC, the problem returns.
Help anybody?

Do you have any USB sticks, USB drives, media/SD Cards, or printers with card readers built in? If so disconnect them and reboot.

Or you could have a failing hard drive. What is the make and model of the hard drive in the computer?

Hi!
I've been having this issue with my Asus laptop for a year now and no technicial seems to be able to resolve it. Nor are they able to tell me what seems to be the problem.
It all started when I was using my computer normally. I was on Vista (even though I'm not 100% sure, I might have already changed to Win 7 64 bit by then). The computer had already been working fine for a year since the purchase. Then, once in a while it would start freezing. In less than a week it would freeze so often that it was becoming impossible to work. In about a week the freezing became permanent - the lamp that indicated the HD in process would light up and stay on while the computer would freeze and stop responding almost immediately all commands. Then it would rebbot, but fail to load windows. I would get the "a disk read error occurred - press ctr + alt + del to restart". Restarting usually lead to the same error screen, however manually switching it off and on would usually load the windows but very soon it would freeze again. Sometimes it freezes while using windows, sometimes before even loading it, on the bl ack"Asus" screen, or while loading the Windows logo.
I have tried reinstalling windows several times, sometimes even during the installation it would randomly freeze or loose the HD when it came to selecting partition... Sometimes it actually went to the end, but the new installation never lasted long.. A couple of dayss and then all over again.

Hi, my friend has a computer that was working fine until she went to start it up yesterday. It starts to boot up but then there is a black screen with "A disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart." Doing this only brings the same message. This is a computer she bought from Tiger Direct and the only thing I can see inside is: Systemax Dual Core Athlon PC. It is running Windows XP, SP unknown. Looks like it has a Hitachi Deskstar HDO 250 GB SATA hard drive.

I tried doing some research on this but mainly found posts years old and a lot of arguing about what to do on other sites.

Can anyone help?

A:A Disk Read Error Occurred

Hello and welcome to TSG.

Her best bet is to use her XP CD to boot the system and go to the first Repair option. At the Command Prompt she needs to type chkdsk /r (including the space) and that will start a five stage process of checking the disk structure and file system, and that might fix any errors it finds.

That procedure is sometimes enough to fix this problem but there are other suggestions if this one fails.

My computer (while running a few days ago) starting making a funny clicking sound. When I heard the sound, I restarted the machine, thinking there was a malfunction. Turns out there was - I got a "Disk Read Error Has Occurred" message and I could not even get to the Windows XP loading screen. I even tried to start the laptop in safe mode, but that did not work either. I got the same error. My computer is a 1.5 year old Dell Inspiron 700m and I have never had any hardware problems until now. My guess is that the HD is damaged (but from what I have not idea).

Question #1: Is is repairable?
Question #2: If the HD needs to be replaced is there anyway to recover at least a portion of what is on the current HD? I have some fairly vital files (financials, etc) that haven't been backed up in a while.

I bought a HP laptop last year - all was going well until one day it would only boot up to a blue screen - took it to computer guy - he said that I had lost everything. He reloaded all system files and xp and sent me on my way with a warning that the hard drive might be going out. $160.00 dollars and 3 days later I got this message "recovered from serious error, download updates for ATI Radeon 200m, X300, X600, Firegl V3200 video driver and so on. Shut it down because of frustration and let it sit for a couple of months. Just turned on and and getting this message "disk read error occured - hid Ctrl Alt Del to reboot. Doesn't work - just keeps coming up to the same error message.

I am not computer literate - can someone tell me if this sounds like the hard drive has gone out like I was told it might - right before I got the first message I downloaded and update from Avira but it probably has nothing to do with this but worth mentioning.

yes it sounds like the harddrive has stopped working. try running http://www.salvationdata.com/data-recovery-freewares/hdd-scan-c.htm. use whichever method you can and scan the hdd. it should tell you if the drive is bad.

Hello again,
My computer was working well up until yesterday, when I accidently knocked the plug for the surge protector out of the wall. The computer was running at the time, so it restarted. The POST was going alright, everything was being detected, until it tried to boot from the hard drive. It recognized that there was a boot image on the drive and everything, but it said,

"A disk read error has occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I tried restarting, but the same thing popped up. The drive was working fine up until this point, no errors or anything. I tried reseating the memory, and it still happened. The hard drive is a Maxtor 200 gig hard drive which was just purchased in June, so I kind of hope that it isn't shorted out or anything.

Hi, I'm running Toshiba Satellite 1905 with Windows XP Home, Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz, 768MB of memory. I just brought a Samsung 160 GB Hard Drive, then used the recovery disc from Toshiba to install the system. The installation was then suddenly stopped for no obvious reason and I guess the system was then considered corrupted. And that's when I got the message sayin:" A Disk Read Error Occured, Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart." I did that and I got the same message. Now I can't even go in to my computer, what should I do?

Thanks in Advance

(Not sure if this is more fitting for the hardware forum, but it seems to sort of center around Windows....)

I have a dualboot Gateway machine (out of warranty) with Red Hat Linux 9 on the master hard disk (Maxtor 80 GB), which runs GRUB as my bootloader, and Windows XP Pro SP1 on the slave (Western Digital 175 GB). A few weeks ago I tried starting up my computer, and got the error "A disk read error occurred" after I selected Windows. After going through this a few times, I played around with the inside of my computer. No loose cables, jumpers seemed okay. I disconnected the Maxtor hard disk (everything except physically taking it out of the computer) and set up the WD one as single to no avail. I've tried using the Recovery Console, where I can confirm that my files (or at least the one the damn thing lets me see) are alright (at least I can list them, move around directories, and I opened a text file), but fixboot didn't do a thing for me. Chkdisk didn't see any problems right away, but after running it with /p it reported "one or more errors." I ran it with /r and it fixed "one or more errors," which it later affirmed were all fixed. I also used the full media test on the WD lifeguard disk with "no errors."

Anyway, I can use Linux just fine. I already had NTFS read support, but it can't read anything off /mnt/winxp (where I mounted the other hard disk, and where I've been able to read it before). The termi... Read more

I have a Windows XP with SP3. It started messing up a bit over a year ago and my dad took it to his friend to fix, and his friend did fix it but returned it with 2 windows XP at boot up. Like when it was booting up, it would make you choose the OS and they were both identical except that 1 of them wouldn't start up. It wasn't a problem because it still worked.
As of last week though it won't let me choose an OS and just starts up to the Compaq screen with the "system recovery" "settings" and "boot menu" then
It just goes from this screen straight to a black screen with the words "A disk read error has occurred. Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart."
Restarting just repeats all of this, the buttons for system recovery and boot menu are unresponsive no mater how many times I mash it, the settings' button is responsive but not very helpful.
Any ideas? I'd really appreciate the help guys.
