Help With Privacy on Shared Computer

Q: Help With Privacy on Shared Computer

I'm new here. I have a question about web surfing and download privacy. I share a computer with my ex-boyfriend who is currently still a "roommate," as we share a lease. (It's complicated). He seems to be aware of (or rather, able to retrieve) everything I surf and everything I download, including Real Player downloads -- even though I always clear the cache and run Ccleaner. Can you tell me how he's doing this? I'm especially curious about Real Player since I have the settings to not remember download history. There's nothing particularly private about anything I download, but the fact that I cannot do so with any privacy is upsetting.

I'm also wondering, given his level of skills at seemingly retrieving anything, what the probability may be that he has been able to retrieve my passwords or emails. I also don't know how to find hidden keyloggers. I do run Spybot periodically, but I think Spybot can be told manually to ignore things like keyloggers, right?

I use XP and usually surf with Firefox. I realize the easiest solution here is to stop sharing a computer, but I cannot afford to do that at the moment, so any help would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

Any help appreciated.

I have had the messgage: You Privacy Is In Danger! Download Privacy Protection Software Now, with a red background and bio hazard logo, come up on my PC.

I have looked into other similar viruses, which all say to run a program or remove a certain file. Unfortunately I can't do anything (I don't think). I open up the Start Menu and can not select the 'All programs' button, the 'Run' command the 'Search' button.

In addition there are lots of pop ups saying that my PC is infected and asking me to run 'Vista AntiVirus 2000' which on my XP is obviously a hoax.

What can I do? It seems to have really messed up my PC.

I haven't got HJT and It seems as though I can not open IE to download it.

Just tried safe mode, and that doesn't work either! Arrrhhhhh!!

Please Help!

Hello faoballo,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I think, given the fact that you're running an illegal copy of windows and all that is wrong with your computer, you should go out and buy a legal copy of Windows and start over. Your computer is likely compromised and that would be the safest and surest course to take.

I am new to the forum here and see the same problems that others have had and tried many of these items but they have not worked.

I ran Rkill, found three items including a TD something or another but could not cure. So I left it as skip like I was told to. I ran the Malware like I was supposed to but the internet will not come back up.

So I tried to run Combo fix, problem is when I do it tells me to turn off my AVG. Problem is the icon in not on my computer anymore and when I go into my programs I have no idea where to click.

I tried doing the FSS but it seems with the AVG running that I am stuck. I can not do anything with the computer and would like to get rid of this virus and get it back up and running. Running Windows XP on my computer. I have a feeling it is something simple. I even tried to uninstall my AVG which I thought it did but then I restarted the computer and it said it was still running.

Please let me know what I can do to get this fixed.

Please note that I do not have access while I am at work so any post will be answered the very next morning with any reply or information that is requested to help with this matter.

Thank you.

The Power Supply on my computer died almost two weeks ago, so I returned the whole system to the place of purchase for a new one to be installed. Over a week later it was returned to me in full working order. However, when I was browsing the web I looked in my history to see a number of pictures had been opened during the week that the computer was out of my hands. These were also pictures I would very rarely open myself anyway, housed in my Pictures documents folder and My Received Files folder.

I would like to know if anyone knows what the law is on this issue, if it is reportable, or if there is anything at all I can do. I have calmed down now but I was absolutely furious yesterday when I found out, and I am worried what else might have been taken from the computer, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Most of my important passwords etc. are not written down anywhere but my online bank would be in my history.

I sent an email of complaint yesterday, and from previous correspondence they should have replied by now, but nothing so far.

If anyone has any similar experience, obviously not as a guilty professional but from hearsay or whatever, or as a consumer, I would appreciate the info.

Here is my situation w/my computer in a nutshell.

Husband & I are separated right now, and I have the computer. I "think" (not 100% sure) he may be monitoring my keystrokes, activities, etc.

Plus, there is a lot of software on this computer that I am not sure about or even sure should still be on here. What would you guys have me to do first? Should I run Hijackthis or a similar program to show you what is on here, and can you help me clean off the computer and get it back to a normal working state?

Any help you can give would be appreciated!

Good morning,I just looked at my computer this morning and found the Privacy Center virus running rampant. It blocks the running of applications, it reboots every time I try to start in Safe Mode, and now that I've rebooted, it comes up with this screen saying I have to update it and won't let me get past it. I'm running XP SP3. Before I rebooted, I tried to download and install Malwarebytes application. It downloaded fine, and installed fine. But when it tried to run itself, Privacy Center blocked its execution. I tried running the application in several different fashions, but all were blocked. It says the application is not found, it is infected, or is missing some piece of it. I've tried bringing up Task Manager to help with the situation. I see Privacy Center running (stopping it just clears it from the screen, but nothing else shows on the screen), and I see pc.exe process running, but I don't have the option of looking at its properties (as suggested on several other sites).Like I said, now I'm stuck at a Privacy Center screen that's asking for me to update it. I can see my windows wallpaper, but no applications are showing. I can stop Privacy Center with Task Manager, but then I just have my wallpaper showing and no applications or Start button. I am typing this from another computer. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!! Thank you.

I shared a Canon Pixma MP170 printer on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. I can see the shared printer name over the network from the XP machine within Add Printer Wizard screen. When I try to add the shared Canon printer on a Windows XP SP3 computer it says it will connect to the printer to download drivers but than it says no drivers are available.
Then it opens up a screen that asks me to provide an unnamed INF file. I put the install CD for the Pixma in the CD tray and pointed it to all Canon INF files located on the CD (one at a time) but it will not go any further. I also found same type of Canon printer INF files within the Program Files/Canon printer folder, but it would not use those either to complete printer add.

Am I missing some procedure that is needed to add a shared printer on a Windows XP computer from a different operating system such as Windows 7 Home Premium?

The Canon MP170 works both when plugged into XP machine and Win7 machine through USB port

Thanks for any help that someone can provide

I'm ready to return this netbook, because this is creepy. I used the wipe/fresh install of Windows 10, with the no files saved option and now I can't stop the camera from going off every time I start or shut down this netbook. I think that this may have been happening before the anniversary "update." A MS tech installed the driver from this HP site (I've done that, too but it doesn't change anything) and it worked temporarily, but now it does this even after I got frustrated and did another install of Windows, in case this is spyware.  If I can't stop it I'm sending this computer back very soon.

Hi everybody,

i am new to these forums and i have a problem...

until now in my office we had computers that were a part of a workgroup meaning personal computers for everyone...but recently my boss has said that all these computers will now use a domain account and local accounts on the systems will be deleted and only administrator accounts will be kept on the system....which we dont get access to........

the problem is that he also said that he can even take screenshots of what we are doing from the server.....ALL my colleagues are worried that if that happens all our privacy hits the bucket....

i know he does have the right to know what we are doing on HIS COMPUTERS but taking screenshots would be too much...

so please guys can u tell me is that possible or he is really bluffing??????

we have windows xp on the work compyters and the server is using windows server 2003

Please could u also tell what all he can from that server so that we might as well avoid it all together...

A:Solved: Privacy issue for computer moved from workgroup to Domain

Actually, he does have the right to take screen shots or anything else he should desire for company computers. With the proper tools, he can see anything that happens on those computers, and if you're doing company work, that shouldn't be an issue.

Please attach extra.txt to your post.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.

Recently purchased and installed Windows 8.1(hard drive crashed in December). During install, I was prompted to set up as shared computer or as part of a group. I have only one computer and mostly am the only one using it. How can I get my computer set as single user (not shared/non group). Often I get alerts that I can't do connect a device, or such, because it is not registered as part of my "group", frustrating. I just want to keep it simple. Thanks.

Hi, I've been here before but with my personal laptop but this time I think something may be wrong with a shared computer my family uses. I've been told that a family member was on facebook and had clicked a link telling them they would get free TOMs. This may be very worried and I have noticed this computer has been slower than it normally is as it's an older computer. I've done a few virus scans and nothing has shown up but I know sometimes things can be hidden. Would it be too much trouble for someone to look over the logs to tell me if anything is hidden? I've done all the requested logs but please tell me if you need anymore information!

I had a MacBook 12." The network worked 65% (not sure why), but recently it's not been working. Even when it worked, I could get files from my Windows 10 desktop (hotspot), but NEVER vice versa.

I followed all the instructions and watched videos to see how to set up network and etc. I believe that I have done everything I need on Windows' part.

Now, I am having another Mac, namely MacBook Air. When I typed in the server address (smb ip), it says that I couldn't access it. Ask the administrator......

OK, but I share whatever files I want and turned them on in the Windows, and the previous MacBook worked and could get the files from my Windows PC, why not this new Mac?

Whatever virus this is, it seems to effect the amount of memory I can use slowing down my computer and causing me crashes in Team Fortress 2.

I have 2 windows 7 computers and i'm trying to share a folder (that I want password protection on) outside of the homegroup.
Both computers are part of the same workgroup and I have the same user account/password combination on both computers plus I have password protected sharing turned on in the network and sharing centre along with file and printer sharing turned on.

On computer 1 I have right clicked and selected that I want the folder shared. When I navigate via the network on computer 2 to computer 1 the shared folder shows up on computer 2 but double clicking on it to open it gives me an alert saying I don't have permission to access it, no option to type in the user name and password (according to the help files I shouldn't even need to type the password in if both computers have the same username/password anyway but would need it if I'm logged in as a different user). It's just a blanket denial of access.

any help is much appreciated

A:cannot access shared drive on other computer

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

We have a network with a server running 2003 and all 63 computers using xp pro.

the 3 office computers need to access a shared folder, containing a frequently used program, on one of these computers. (This folder cannot be stored on the server as the program doesn't work then. It is also easier as only one computer needs the frequent program updates). I have done this by mapping a drive to the folder.

The user of Computer A has left and I changed the username and password on server and computer.

When I tried to connect using Computer B I was prompted for a username and password to access it and everything was fine. But computer C didn't give me this option. I disconnected the drive and tried to remap it.

computer A has the folder, computer B can access the folder and program, computer C can see the computer but not the folder.

All computers were recently upgraded from win 98 with fresh install except Computer C which was just upgraded over the top (Lazy tech guys couldn't be bothered to reformat)

I have called in tech guys but they take 3 days to arrive and usually mess things up

Has anyone any ideas on why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mel

A:Can see computer but not shared folder on network

What are you the System Admin or Network Engineer?

Computer C has to be re-formated with a fresh copy of XP. So that would have to be done if the lazy tech didn't do it right the first time.

Sounds like your remoting into these Computer A, Computer B and Computer C. Can you go out to their location and see what's going on? If you can't get the techs to do since you have to wait 3 days. Computer C needs to be taken care of.

Each PC A, B, C need to be setup in Active Directory so you can administer them correctly.

I have Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit that struggles along to see the shared resources of other computers on the LAN even if the "Network discovery" and "Files and Printers Sharing" options of the "Advanced sharing settings" applet are enabled.

In other words, if I click on Network in Windows Explorer, no computer on the LAN is displayed; whereas, if I write "\\<ComputerName>" in the address bar, I can see with difficulty its shared resources.

This fact is in each account.

I have no firewall active, I use the network of type "Work" and I do not use the homegroup feature.

The operating systems on the target computers are Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3. The computers have the same time.

How can I check whether the SMB protocol is working properly?

How do I fix this?

Surely SOMEONE out there knows how to fix my dilemma. If I have not provided enough information. Please tell me what you need to know. I really need a solution for this. Stopping the share at the Windows 7 machine disrupts other computers. So, that is not really a solution.
Windows 8.1x64 clean install from dvd. I have a private network configured as a Workgroup consisting of a W2000 photocopy machine,XP desktop, W7 desktop and laptop and now a Windows 8.1 desktop. During the initial installation I have files on the Windows 7 desktop I need so from Windows Explorer I clicked on the Windows 7 computer to gain access to the password shared folders and their files.
I entered the User and Password info and clicked the "stay connnected" as I expected to reboot several times during this computers installation.

Everything worked just great UNTIL I no longer wanted the connection to the Windows 7 computer.
On XP and even Windows 7 it was trivial to Disconnect a computer that I had established a share with.

However, on Windows 8.1 I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I disconnect the share with the Windows 7 computer?

This may seem trivial but I cannot figure it out. Obviously I can disconnect from the W7 computer but that computer is shared with others as well. And then the other computers would have to re-establish their shares. And, that would just be a work around.

Please help me by telling me the right way to do this...

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I share a computer with my family and I believe that it's security may have been compromised. I can't be positive, but we do use this computer to handle financial matters so I just felt I had to make sure. In essence, this is a "is my computer clean" post but it would be very reassuring to know that our monetary assets were safe.

The computer is an Asus Laptop, running on Windows Vista 64 bit. The main reason why I believe that it is infected is because some of the members in my family click on popups and open emails that should not be opened. I do have adblock enabled on google chrome now so that issue has been resolved, but I feel that the damage may already have been done. There are a few different programs that launch when I start the computer that I have never seen before, which caused alarm and brought me here.

Please, it would be very reassuring if someone could assist me.

I had a server computer that was running windows 7. It was working like a charm, but suddenly I was unable to remote to it. I found a monitor and keyboard that I connected. My server then told me that it had installed windows 10. Wow thanks? That is something I would like to have a say in? But oh well might as well get with the times and use windows 10.
As I am using it as a server it is running, iis, ftp, plex, and some other servers. Most of it were still working after the conversion to windows 10, but I?m been having some real problems with the normal sharing of files. ? Password protected sharing sharing were turned off
? I turned on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders

Hello everyone,

I have a problem at my work. A person from HR is leaving for a vacation and we will have her assistant working on her computer. However, due to confidentiality of most of the information we want her assistant to have access to only a few of her sub folders. I have tried using share options but it always asks me to share the main folder as well and then everything is shared between the two accounts. Secondly, I have tried to give special permition to the assistant's account going to folders preferences but it did not work at all.

Would you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

A:One computer, two accounts and only a few sub-folders shared

Have you thought about not sharing and making files with different names for the new help? Then after vacation, you can save the new files with the old name.

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

A:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

Ok, so I really didnt need Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP but I installed it out of boredom onto my computer to play with the other acounts on my computer. I put abunch of limits on my limited account, the rest of the family uses, and I set the options so when I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice at the Welcome Screen it would bring up the admin log on.

Well, it was bugging me so I uninstalled it, thinking it would reset all the options... it didnt.

It uninstalled and it still only shows the family account on the welcome screen. When I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice, nothing happens now. If I had admin rights I could change the log on from the welcome screen to the screen where you jsut type the user and password. But I have no rights, annnd, I can't install any programs.

Any help would be appreciate, Thanks.

p.s. I have knoppix on a bootable cd, if i can get around it that way. Thanks, Tyler.

A client has a computer running Windows 10 Pro that shares a folder to be accesible from MS-DOS based machines (i have no control from them). The MS-DOS program asks for user and password and gets connection to the folder.

The Windows 10 machine was not enought fast, and we decide to change it to a better machine (new machine with i3cpu, 16gb Ram, Windows 7 Pro 64bits).
I setup all configuration the same as was in the old computer:
- computer name
- Workgroup
- user and password
- static ip adress and DNS
- folder shared name (this is in a secondary hdd, moved from old computer to the new)...

Computers with Windows 7 and Windows XP in the same network have Access instantly, all works fine,
but the MS-DOS based machines says: "wrong password" (and is not).

Surfing in the web I found that:

I have setup Windows LAN Manager authentication level to Send LM and NTLM Responses, but the result is the same.

I don't know where is the mistake. Has anyone any idea how can i solve that problem?

Objective - put folders I wish to share in a library and share that with only one user(myself) on all machines.

Reason - I am getting old and do not remember as well as I once did. Am also old school and installed Novell networks back in the '80's and '90's. Took computer vacation for 12 years and came back in to win7. Quite frankly it confuses me.

Question - my username and password on all machines is the same. Is this a problem? I can't seem to see that it would be.

Sharing info I have read says you can share with users of other computers, but what "syntax" is used to add them on the sharing screen for "specific person"?
