Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

Q: Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to get.live.com and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Windows Live Messenger screen loads on start-up then intrusively nags me to log-in every few minutes. I do not have an account, do not intend to ever use this feature and would like to turn it off or completely disable it altogether.

In XP Pro, disabling Windows Live Messenger was a snap - Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Component Services toggle switch - done. Windows 7 Ultimate / Google search returns are zip for "turn-off Windows Live Messenger" (or variations thereof).

Flummoxed in South Carolina Help, please.

A:How do I turn-off Windows Live Messenger?

You can uninstall it in Programs and Features if you don't use it, or any other Windows Live programs. Under Windows Live essentials.

I upgraded to the latest Windows Live Messenger earlier today and while the program itself works very well, it has caused an annoyance for me. The problem is that it has enabled Cleartype (thick text that supposedly makes the letters more legible, but gives me headaches) in parts of the OS, including the title bars, inside of applications and the clock. I don't like this and I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried enabling and disabling it in the display properties but that didn't help at all.

Can someone please tell me how to disable it?

Ugh. Is it an option? I have Logmein installed but I can never catch him when he has it on. He's deaf so it doesn't help to call him tell him to turn it on. I live a few hundred miles away from him. His neighbor was helping him, saw spell checker was a problem, then emailed me asking me to turn it off.

I'm running Ubuntu so I can't test it easily. Is there an easy option to shut it off?

I don't recall turning on the Vacation Notice in Windows Live Mail but, nevertheless, it's on. Senders receive an e-mail from my Live account with the subject "Vacation reply" and no text, just my given name.

A:Windows Live Mail - I Can't Locate Vacation Notice to Turn it Off

It's possible that the message is from your ISP rather then WLM. In WLM you need to create a message rule, and leave your PC on, with WLM open all the time for it to work. Who is your ISP? That may help us figure this out. A Guy

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

A:How to turn windows firewall off? I can't click the Turn Windows Firew

This may have been disabled on your computer, particularly if you are in a Domain (e.g.: at work, in a library, etc).

However assuming that you have Administrator rights to your computer you should be able to turn it on and off by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

If you cannot turn the Firewall off through the above approach try the following Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Looks for the 'Windows Firewall' Service, double click it, then click on 'Stop'.

From within the Service properties you can also stop the Firewall from starting with Windows, etc.

Is there a way that I can completely turn of the messenger service so that it will not just start again once I restart the computer? I am sick of those little net send advertisements.

A:turn of messenger service

Yes there is, but that's not the real problem. The fact that those ads can get through is a wake-up call that your firewall is not doing it's job! You're treating the symptom, not the desease. Messenger service has valid uses, and turning it off is just ignoring the issues with your security.

If you insist on turning Messenger off after this, just go into Admin Tools, Services, and under the properties of Messenger, set it to disabled.

Personally, I'd fix my firewall, rather than disable a standard Windows facility. What other things that aren't popping up are you ignoring?

I am booting a Linux fatdog64 live cd from the optical drive without any problems.
However, the Linux desktop icons show my NTFS partitions (system reserved and c: system partition) and will mount them without difficulties.
I am looking for ways to turn off the hard disk without physically disconnecting from the mobo.
Is there a way to accomplish this via BIOS setup? Disable chipset SATA controller ?
Setting the hard disk in CMOS to NONE will not show the disk, but Linux still picks up the the partitions. Any ideas?

A:booting from live cd, turn off system hdd

If the disk drive is on SATA , you'll kill it off as well if you disable SATA controllers. If I'm not mistaken though, fatdog is Linux Puppy at the core, so you can install it on a usb thumbdrive after you booted the livecd (it has its own installer). Afterwards you can simply disable SATA and use the USB pendrive to boot.

I did make a switch with molex connectors, that would cut the power to the device if I wanted to. It's pretty easy to to if you know how to solder and have a dual (male-female) molex power connector. If you have only sata power connectors coming from the PSU... it's more complex.

Hello Pauleduc,

Double check to make sure that the Windows Time service is enabled, and that your system time is set accurately and synced.

You could also do this by opening an elevated command prompt, then typing the commands below and press Enter after each one.
net start w32time

w32tm /resync

Afterwards, see if you have the "Turn live tile on/off" option.

Okay, after a tedious hour & a bit of downloading because my mother refuses to pay for broadband[im on dial-up ] I finally installed Windows Live Messenger because apparently(from what I've heard) MSN isn't supposed to work anymore, and tonight, mine stopped working. So, I decided to get Live. I install it, all is well UNTIL I try to sign in..

"Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

Error Code: 81000314"

This really bugs me because when I go to fix it in the thing that scans your settings and makes suggestions it says I have a problem in my Hosts File(happens frequently, tried to 'repair' many times) and a new error in the firewall is blocking it.. I use the XP-SP2 firewall, and I haven't changed ANY settings tonight, so any ideas as to whats going on?

P.S- Im also getting another error number about the firewall, can't remember it exactly. But I checked the firewall and it says Windows Live Messenger 8.0 & Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (Phone) are both allowed :S

any ideas?

Okay the sounds (When they work) Drive me absolutely bonkers.

Half the time, or more than that they don't even work

So I was wondering perhaps if there is a possible way I could use WLM with the previous sounds of MSN Messenger?

I did a fully clean install after reformating my computer (I've been trying to do a clean sweep for upkeep sakes), and was wondering how I could go about doing this.

I've thought about using messenger sounds from AIM, but that could just possibly confuse me, to the point I'd go bonkers.

I just want my old sounds back, while using WLM.

I know this sounds more than likely like a N00b question but I am totally lost in this aspect.

Edit: In fact any sounds, that would be... well suitable for the sounds for receiving messages, new email, and people logging in would be swell.

Yes used the word swell...

I have a slight problem with Windows Live Messenger on Windows XP. Everytime that I am speaking with a person, via instant messages, after a couple of minutes the chat window disappears and I am rendered unable to continue the conversation as when I click on the contact's name to open the window again it won't appear. The only way I could get it back was to sign out and back in, however when I go to sign out it always tells me that all messenger chat windows will be closed when I sign out, this is puzzling as I can see no windows open. I considered doing a system restore until I discovered that I had turned it off to deal with a viral problem, as I was told that sometimes the virus can hide in the system restore, so there are no restore points that are beyond when the problem started. I have also tried to perform a clean uninstall, where I wiped off everything of windows live messenger, and reinstalled it. I have also tried another account, however no matter what I've done the problem has remained. So, if someone could instruct me as to how I could rectify this annoyance it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I think I solved it. I went to my programs folder, deleted the folder titled Microsoft which contained only one file, the Enhancements. I placed it my recycle bin as a security measure then shut off my system. It didn't pop up at start up, so then I tried my Live Messenger. First try I got a message that said it couldn't connect, but I believe it was just a glitch. Second & third attempt all went well. Now I can toss it from the recycle bin.

And, of course, installing wndows live messenger from the setup file requires the previous version to be removed first (strangely, it comes up with 2 error messages when I initiate the setup file).

I have recently installed a new wireless broadband router, replacing my old one which had broken. Since the new router was installed (12th March) I have been experiencing this problem. Could be completely unrelated though.

As far as I am aware I have not deleted any Windows Live Messenger files on my computer. And "msnmsgr.exe" is still present in the Program Files folder.
So... yeah, I am slightly confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My Dad is having trouble updating Windows Live Messenger on his laptop. He is getting frustrated because the program won't let him access it unless he updates. He has to go through the hotmail site all of the time to check his e-mails. We have both tried numerous times to install it but to no avail.

We get an error message saying
A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\Windows\Installer\Messenger.msi
Please close all other programs, and then try again. It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. hr:0x80070643.

There are no other programs running when we try to install Windows Live Messenger. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I have an HP computer with Windows 7.

Whenever I turn on the computer, I get a message that reads "Windows Live Messenger has stopped working," then gives me 2 choices - close the program or check online for a solution then close the program. I don't use the program (but I do use Windows Live Mail) so I just close the program. Is there way I can remove this program (while keeping Windows Live Mail) so it does not continue to bother me?

Locate "Windows Live Essentials"

It will then give you the option to pick which ''essentials" you want to remove. Choose Messenger.
