Computer Freezes whilst playing games

Q: Computer Freezes whilst playing games

hello, i have just bought a new graphics card and overclocked my pc to achieve a 1:1 CPURAM. My temps and voltages are all fine, max temp for cpu is 55 degrees and gpu max about 75 degrees depending on how much i want to put the fan on (at 80% 75 degrees). Look at my pc specs to get an idea of the OC.
i have updated video drivers and this only occurs when im playing games.
The sound sometimes freezes with the image too, i cant return to my desktop and all i can do is manually restart my computer.
There is no error displayed in the event viewer, and im wrpping my brain with what it could be, i have a termaltake 550 WATT PSU thats about a year old. iahve 2 SATA HDD , any ideas?
thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone,

My laptop seems to have started switching itself off at random times when I am playing games, specifically STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, World in Conflict, The Sims 2, and probably others as well. I assume it is something to do with the graphics card or memory.

I was able to stop World in Conflict switching off by lowering the game detail settings, but the problem remains for STALKER, even if I switch the graphics to the lowest settings. This problem didn't occur a few months ago when I last installed it, and my computer is more than capable of running these games.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to solve this problem, or at least what type of problem it is? Can I change my video/memory settings to compensate? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570.

I posted this question in the 'Games' section earlier, but I'm not sure it actually counts as a 'Game' problem.

Thanks alot for your help,
JollySam

Hey, im having the most annoying problems. Fresh install for windows 7 ultimate x64, never experienced problems like this before. So whats happening, first off when i went to install windows 7 it took 6 times to get an install without problems. Secondly now that ive got a good install, im experiencing numerous problems. I've had 3 bsod's and a few times a day im experiencing crashes like i haven't seen before. The whole computer freezes. i cant even turn num lock on my keyboard and worst of all i cant even click the restart button i actually have to turn it off at the mains. i normally experience this when playing a game, but non of my components are overheating, i think it could be my hard drive as i had the problems installing software on previous windows installation.

Any idea's how to fix this?

Hello all,

I've been having a few problems with my laptop since I bought it. The problem mainly occurs when I'm playing a game (usually xcom: enemy unknown or deus ex HR at the moment) but has occurred when I'm browsing the internet (albeit far less often). The BSODs appear to be random but I'm using a blue tooth mouse and have noticed the BSOD will usually happened if I'm using it. I've also noticed that my laptop screen with black out for a split second on games that are quite graphics intensive for my system.

Its been frustrating me a lot so I reinstalled and fully updated windows 7. The GPU drivers are all up to date also.

I've attached the SF file that is required and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks for your time

First off it doesn't only crash when playing games, just almost all of the time.
I cannot remember when this first started but i assume it was around the time of windows 10, my PSU became very hot which i noticed upon crashes, so i used an external fan to keep it cool, which it did a very good job of. however, today it has been crashing constantly when playing games, sometimes after 1m or 1h, the PSU is very cool however my CPU fan becomes very hot so i can only assume it is the CPU that is messing up (the CPU fan is still running so that is not broken). i get no blue screen or error message it just shuts down, sometimes automatically restarting but other times pending on me turning it back on.
I have tried reinstalling windows, looked online for hours with no luck. i saw something about updating BIOS but that is beyond me and sounds dangerous from all the warnings i see online. on one error i got a watchdog code which i looked up to find multiple causes, one involving a faulty CPU, i am reluctant to replace it if it is not necessary but am desperate for any help, on the crash event viewer it just says that windows shut down unexpectedly, no error codes or solutions, thanks for any help

Hey,

First, it is very hard to give advise when we don't know what system you have.
Please give the make and model, service tag if available, or if custom please list all the exact parts (eg don't list 500w psu, list the full model Corsair CX500W CMPSU-500CX)
Alternatively you can run the TSG utility and copy and paste the info back here.

Next you need to check your temps, both at idle and under load.
Ideally at idle in the BIOS and under load using monitoring software (lots available but the more accurate will be one provided by the motherboard manufacturer if available).
Report all the temps back here (CPU, Motherboard, GPU)

Hey guys. So for the past few months whenever i play any games i eventually get BSOD.. sometimes 5 minutes in.. sometimes an hour in. I've downloaded blue screen viewer and got a couple of screenshots of a couple of different bsod's.. these 2 seem to be the only ones that come up. I tried running a ram tester and that came back with no errors.. Just wondering if anyone can decipher this for me.
Furthermore.. i don't know if this is related or not but if i leave my computer on for say a day or so, everything starts to lag.. videos start to stutter and there is just lag in general in everything i do.. once i restart it all comes good... for a while but then starts up again. I tried disabling every non essential startup program but it still does it.
Thanks guys!
Also.. i am trying to add the dump files but can't figure out how to gain permission to do so...

Hi,

This is my first post here and after looking around for a while I'm still having problems.

I have read the Posting Instructions and used the SF Diagnostic Tool, results included.
I'm not sure if that includes all my system information, but if anything is missing I'll post as soon as I can.

To clarify further the BSOD has happened on a variety of games, sometimes it can happen with in 5mins of loading one other times I am good for a couple of hours or I can play till I've quit the game with no crashing.

I have done scans with MSE, Spybot and Malware Bytes with no issues found.
From looking at other threads, one recommended using a driver scanner to check for updates (SlimDrives), again no updates found.

That's all I can think of for now, also to be honest I am a bit reluctant in having to do a full re-install and would very much like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks in advance,
Mick

Hey guys,
OK, basically i'm having GSODs (grey striped screen of death) whenever I try to play Borderlands or BFBC2..its always about 3-5mins into the game and ALWAYS happens. The odd thing is that I was playing L4D2 for months with not a sniff of a BSOD until now.
I've gone through test after test after test and made little progress into finding out whats wrong + i've replaced the PSU, HDD & RAM in the hope that these might be causing the issues without getting into big ??s for a new GPU, CPU or MB.
The system is circa Oct 09...so components are still fairly new.

I'm not familiar with the more intrinsic areas of the PC like the Bios settings as i've never had a reason to be familiar with them so i've left my voltage settings on auto as I wouldn't have a clue as to what voltages I need to set everything to.
I've attached an analysis file in the hope that someone much cleverer than me can tell me what's wrong.

Thanks guys!

Hello all,

This is my first post on these very helpful forums. I hope someone will be able to assist me.

I have a HP ProBook running Windows 7. Ever since I got the laptop, I often get BSODs while attempting to run games (Total War series, The Force Unleashed, just to name a couple). A:Computer freezes while playing games!

When this happens, is it like the whole system (including OS) is stuck or just the game?

Please go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and open Event Viewer, go through system/applications logs, and see whether you can find something which can help us get to the root of this issue. Especially look for the events marked with yellow/red icons.

Also, do you remember when exactly did this started to happen e.g. an driver update?

My computer freezes when ever it plays games or occasionally videos. I have done tests on the cpu, ram and graphics. Everything works fine until the graphics gets to the PhysX test then the computer freezes. It isn't overheating because it only gets to around 53 degrees when it freezes and on non-PhysX tests I can get it over 75 degrees and still run smoothly. The computer was knocked off the desk so I am wondering if I may have damaged the motherboard or graphics card. I put my mates graphics card in to see if that would make a difference and it would freeze on simple things like internet browsing.
I have an intel I7-3820, an asus p9x79 motherboard, a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 graphics card and 8gb of DDR3 1600mhz RAM.

A:Computer freezes when playing games.

must be a problem with the graphic card,, sometimes intermittent problems wont just be about not show up any display but also things like that...
if it is still covers the warranty then have it replace,,,

Alright so the issue seems to be getting worse, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Usually i have to end up keep restarting the computer over and over after each lock-up until i finally get lucky and it doenst lock up. Sometimes it bluescreens me and sometimes it restarts the PC also. Rarely it will do it when not playing games.
I've tryed about everything i can think of doing that you would normally do when these problems first occur
I've cleaned out the PC, took vid card out then put back in, tryed new monitor, used advanced system care to clean my PC and registry up etc, nothing has helped so far.

Im starting to think something is wrong with the video card, altho my BIOS needs a update but i dont know if that has anything to do with this, and i really dont know how to update BIOS anyways. Could also be the power supply altho its 650 watts so idk, its not realy old neither only around a year or so
Im using Windows XP professinoal 32 BIT SP2
Video card is Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT if that is of any help
By the way overheating is not an issue, ive checked temperatures on most things in PC, and PC chip si running around 27 celcius-30 celicius always.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

A:Computer freezes while playing games

First, we here at TechSpot strongly suggest you update to SP3.

Second, we also take the position that when it somes to the registry to leave it alone. More problems occur when the registry is touched than is ever fixed.

Third, please do the following...

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

Ok, I got a new computer recently ad it crashes when I play games. It is an AMD Sempron 3000+ with 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 9600 videocard. The game I am mostly playing is Warcraft 3, fully patched an I know that my computer can run it, as my old computer with a 400MHZ proccessor could with only chopping, never crashing. When it crashes the game just freezes on the screen. I have scanned with all of my antivirus and antispyware programs, and removed all spyware and viruses found. The computer only sewms to freeze during gameplay, and spikes during it too. This happens on LAN games, online games and single-player ones. SO, do you have any clue on how I can fix this. The computer also has a few rare spikes when not playing games, but it never freezes. So does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Any hlp would be appreciated, thanks.

A:Computer freezes when playing games

get a newer version of catalyst drivers ( i use the 4.12's, other version of catalyst drivers caused freezing problems with simple games)

or you could try the 5's cause they are out

Since you said that your computer also experiences similar problems when you arent playing a game, see if your computer is overheating.

So, for awhile now my computer has been freezing up when I play big games, like world of warcraft, lord of the rings online, etc.

When it freezes, nothing moves at all, and it makes a really wierd noise that differs from whatever i'm doing.

I've updated video drivers, sound drivers, cleaned out all the dust in the computer, tried playing with the side of the case off and nothing seems to be working.

A:Computer freezes up while playing games.

I had the same problem with my computer before. It turned out to be a bad power supply. It wasn't giving my graphic card and CPU enough power when I ran everything on full load. You can find a tool somewhere to see how much power you need. From what I see, you're computer not really a good gaming computer. You only have 2gig ram, 241mb dedicated graphic memory.

Hey this is my first post, however this isn't a new problem concerning my computer.

It has become an annoying a frequent occurance on my computer. The problem is that whenever I play a game it will just freeze on screen *game picture will remain* and of course I will have to manually restart the computer. I have looked all over for a solution to this problem, in vain. I have run "dxdiag" "msconfig" in the Run menu, and i've tweaked with that every which way, and nothing has seemed to solve the problem. This has not always been an issue with my computer. When I first got my computer all games ran fine, without freezing. I have recently got my computer fixed, and restored, and I had them put in 256 MB Ram, along with my previous 256. However to my dismay when I started to play games the freezing continued.

The games I play are:
Battlefield: Vietnam
Counter Strike
Day of Defeat
Call Of Duty
Max Payne 2
Iron Storm
Soldier Of Fortune 2 *Demo, which was the first game to freeze*

I really have no idea what is wrong with my computer, and I love playing on-line games, so if anyone can suggest anything, it would be really appretiated!

P.S....I have also tryed a cleanboot of the system to get rid of all back- running programs, and it still continued to freeze.

Hey,

I'm new to this forum and it is probably going to be the best place to get help for my problem.

I'm not sure if this has been posted/asked before as the search wouldn't load for me :( so I'm sorry if this has been posted/asked before.

Problem:
When I play any next gen games such as C&C generals, Dawn of war or any 3d game like that my PC freezes during game play, I would get about 5 minutes of play and it will freeze, my mouse still moves until I click a certain number of times and then the mouse will freeze and the actual PC box will beep once requiring a manual shut down.

Specs:
I'm not that much of a hardware of PC wizard but this is the only info I have on my PC.

Microsoft Windows XP

Version 2002
Service Pack 2

AMD Sempron(tm) Processor

1.80GHz, 640 MB or RAM

It also has ATI(?) graphics card

If you could help it would be much appreciated as it's really getting me down.

Hey Guys,

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 570. Its processor is AMD Athlon II X4 630 at 2.8 GHZ

Whenever I play games such as Call of Duty or FIFA 11, the screen falters and everything freezes. After a few seconds, the screen becomes a board of checkers in all the colors you can imagine.

I have tried calling Dell but their help is useless at best.

Is it my ATI Radeon 4200? Is it the actual screen?

I would really appreciate your help and ideas.

One more thing, a friend suggested I use the BurnIn test program and even during the running of the test, the same problem happened without finding out the results.

If I should simply buy a higher performance video card, let me know. Thanks for your help and ideas.

THe link below will show you a picture of what my screen looks like during this problem.

Some questions first....Is it a full tower? Do you have a PCIE slot? Do you have a decent(over 500 watts) power supply or the stock Psu?
Do you have any 6pin power connectors?

Hey 7Forums,

After my last graphics card has died on me (HD6850), I have been able to borrow a friends GFX Card (HD5770) and have been having a strange problem - this problem is not unique to my computer, it also was happening in his computer when using the same GFX Card.

Right on to the problem:
What happens is that the computer will be running just fine, until I open a game.
After opening a game it will run perfectly but then every minute of so it will freeze the whole computer for maybe 5-10 seconds. Whilst doing this the sound of hardware being removing and reinserting will play (the same sound that happens if you was to unplug and re insert a usb stick)
And then this will persist as long as I have the game open, closing the game makes the problem go away.
This has only been happening since using this GFX card, and want to know if these is anyway of fixing it.
Thanks in advance,
Dave.

First of all, Hi
1. Are your video drivers up to date?
2. Are you using any DVI to VGA (or what ever) adapter?
3. Did you run a stress test with Furmark or any other software?

Recently I have had an issue with my computer running very poorly.
First, when opening Chrome it takes much longer than usual just to load the home page. The home page is an AVG Safe Search version of Chrome, not sure what that is about. Also, when opening a link it takes extremely long to load, and sometimes needs to be refreshed to get the page to load.
I have also developed a problem with the computer freezing while playing certain games. Most recently both Hawken and Farcry 3 have frozen, requiring a hard reset. I built this computer as a gaming PC, and it should be adequate to play these games without these issues. I've tried playing with the graphics on the lowest settings, and still have the same issues.
Please let me know what information you need to help me.
Thanks in advance for your help and expertise,
-Sean
Edit: I also just noticed an "AVG Coupons" little pop-up in the lower right corner of the screen.

Just as the title suggests, I literately made an account for this site specifically to see if I can get any help on this problem.

My computer freezes randomly only while playing video games, the freeze isn't a blue screen or a crash, the computer literately freezes to something like a screenshot of what I was doing in game and nothing I can do except restarting the computer can unfreeze it. Sometimes a similar freeze occurs while playing, then 2 seconds later it unfreezes as if the computer is lagging behind the game play, making me believe that this problem is either caused by the OS or the graphics card (my power supply is brand new, but it is a possibility). This is very difficult to to troubleshoot since the freeze is random, but I can conclude that the freeze occurs usually after 2-3 hours of playing.

One solution I attempted was turning off Link State Power Management but it didn't work.

Hello, I'm hoping that I can get some insight on how to fix an issue with my PC.
Recently, while playing video games, the game will lock up periodically for one to three seconds. The game window will sometimes grey out and have "Not responding" in the bar up top. While this is happening, the game sound that was playing with play a half second loop through the duration of the freeze. The game will then resume after this short time. In Hearthstone, these freezes seem to happen randomly before a spell effect happens, or upon switching turns. Maybe just coincidence. In WoW and League of Legends, it just happens when it feels like it.
This issue has started just recently, and I haven't made any modifications to the machine prior to the issue.
I keep the heat sinks and whatnot inside free of dust with canned air regularly, and core temperatures according to the "Core Temp" program tells me that the max temp reached is 52.
In attempts to rectify the issue, I've uninstalled and re-installed the graphics drivers, but to no avail.

I'm at my wits end and I'm about to throw out a perfectly good computer over this problem. For the last few weeks, my computer has been freezing while playing video games. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I mostly play World of Warcraft and the Sims. At first I thought it was an issue with WoW until I deiced to play the Sims earlier this week and had my system freeze. I'm wondering if it's a problem with my internet, since I'd been having issues with that for a few months now.

Basically what happens is I open the game, log in, select what character I want to log onto, get past the load screen and anywhere within a few seconds to about 40 mins my computer will completely lock up. Sometimes I can get it to unlock by opening task manager and force the game to close, sometimes I have to hold the start button to force a reboot to get back into my system. I've updated Windows to v.1511. I've updated my graphics card, my motherboard, and anti-virus. I've opened my comp up and completely cleaned the inside and have been running with the side of the case open. I would say that my system is getting hot but I've logged onto WoW as soon as my computer would let me and it's locked up, so I think that rules that out.

I've attached the two files that are usually asked for, I also attached two screen shots of a random popup I keep getting, It's been showing up since I upgraded to Windows 10. I've been ignoring it but it could be the issue?

Maybe it doesn't stop after 30 minutes I was play counter Strike source and it took over an hour before it froze up please help. Thanks

A:Computer freezes after 30 minutes of playing games

Sounds like either a heat problem, or a psu problem.

Check your temps.

Is your psu putting out enough power for your system?

I see from your specs that you have a 380watt psu. Is it a good quality psu, or a cheap no name brand that came with your case?

Take a look at this psu wattage calculator HERE Remember to add a further 30% to what ever figure it gives you. This is because even a good quality psu will only achieve around 70% efficiency. A cheap psu wont achieve anywhere near that.

You might also want to take a look at this excellent article on psu`s.The psu thread.

I have had my computer for a year now and it has been perfect, but about 2 months ago my computer started to BSOD and completely freeze after a few minutes of playing a video game. I installed new drivers and that fixed the problem. But out of no where the problem has risen again, but this time it doesn't BSOD, it just freezes or it shuts down randomly then upon starting it, it makes a double beeping sound. These weird crashes only happen after a few minutes of playing a video game. I have done virus checks, defragged my comp, and recently restored my computer to factory conditions, but the problem persists. Any help you guys can provide would be amazing! Thank you! :)

Hello,

Please take a look at the following thread and attach the requested reports.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-452654.html

Also post the make/model of the PC. If custom built post the specs.

Motherboard-CPU-Memory-Graphics card-Power Supply brand/wattage

Boot into the BIOS and post then temp and voltage readings. (+3.3V.+5V,+12V)

Install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the program at idle and under load

Random shutdowns can usually be attributed to heat or power issues.

First post! *waves to techspot forum people*

Anyway, I built myself a new computer about 4 months ago, which has worked without any problems untill about 3 days ago. It now completely freezes whenever i try to play any sort of intensive game on it (e.g. crysis or medieval 2). The freeze generally occours a few minutes into gameplay, and the sound will loop like a broken CD and also screech at me (i can post a horrible quality phone-camera video on youtube if that helps).

The first time this happened, i was linked to a microsoft website which mentioned that it may be my CPU, Motherboard, RAM or PSU. I haven't seen an error message since

I have tried swapping power supplies (both are 500w), and i've also removed the RAM sticks and tested each one seperately. I've also run memtest86+ which found nothing.

My CPU generally runs at about 20 - 25 degrees C (it's currently running at 14), and my graphics card runs at about 80 (which is apparently normal for a 8800gtx). I've also tried swapping out the graphics card to no avail.

I've also tried removing my sound card, disabling onboard sound, reinstalling drivers for sound & graphics.

I really don't know what to do next, or how to fix this... Please help me before I throw my computer into the sea!

Cheers.
