deleting files creats a copy of that file

Q: deleting files creats a copy of that file

I have been trying to delete pics. When i press control and click on each pic to delete a bunch at one time, I get copies of the files im trying to highlight. I thought I was clicking on create shortcut, but it is creating a copy of all I have highlighted even before I get to the delete menu.
Anyone heard of this before? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: deleting files creats a copy of that file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a really stubborn case of spyware that my computer contracted 1 week ago. My internet browser was re-directed to an ad site and I noticed an IE toolbar had been placed on my computer and in my programs folder.

I downloaded and used loads of different spyware tools with no real results until I was finally able to get my internet home page back to normal thanks to hjt. (I deleted the files that I easily recognized because they were the same as the web address that my webpage was redirected to) But I really dont know what other files to remove. I want to make sure I kill everything because for whatever reason the threats that have been removed previously keep popping back up when I re-start my comp.

Recently, I had my Act! by Sage 2009 version 11.0 customer relations database completely lose all my data. I was using Windows Vista. I have since upgraded to Windows 7. I have tried repeatedly to reinstall Act! by Sage 2009 and I get an error message that says the program recognizes a previous version of Act and it requires that I exit the installation and remove all previous versions. I was able to unistall Act! using the uninstall programs option. However, Act files remained in the Program Files. When I try to remove the ACT file in Program Files it will not allow me to because it says the file is open in Windows Explorer. I tried opening Windows Explorer to try to locate the file and close it but I could not locate any Act files. I tried disabling windows explorer and it removed all icons from my desktop and I couldn't access any drop down/ pull up menus so I didn't know how to proceed. I restarted the computer to get my standard settings back.

What I'm ultimately trying to accomplish is to reinstall Act! by Sage 2009 so that I can then buy an upgrade to Act! by Sage 2010 and install it. The program path that appears to be my problem and which I can't remove is as follows:

C:\Program Files\ACT\Act for Windows\Plugins\Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.dll

which is listed as a "File Extension". The Error Message list the File Description as "Act BHO plugin".

The plugin can be disabled manually if you are ok modifying the Registry yourself, otherwise you can download and run HiJackThis (www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles). When you run it, you will get a list of all sorts of items, scroll down until you locate the "C:\Program Files\ACT\Act for Windows\Plugins\Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.dll", put a check in its box and have HJT 'Fix' it. Then close HJT, restart windows and you should be able to delete the file.

Hi, I am trying to delete a whole lot of old files, like old Word documents, kids old school assignments and some photos. I delete tham as normal but as soon as they delete, they pop back into the folder with the word (copy) after the file name. Is there a setting I can change so that when I delete a file it doesn't come back as a copy? I just want to clean out the folders and don't want these files any more. How can I permanently delete them?

Hi all,

I am looking for some help creating a batch file to delete files starting with IMG******. They are always 6 randonmly genorated numbers after the IMG part. For example, they will be IMG000004, IMG000041 and IMG123500.

I have a removeable disk on E:\ that is set to have a daily backup backup to it, however, the software doesnt overwrite the IMG files correctly meaning the drive fills up and my backup fails.

So, how can I create a batch file that finds all of the folders starting with IMG and then deletes them from E:\

Thanks very much

You are contradicting yourself. First you said delete files starting with IMG and then you said delete folders staring with IMG?

If they are folders are these folders all in the Root of the E:\ drive?

Using Windows 10 Home.
This problem only happens if I'm performing a search.
If I search within a folder for say *.* and then delete a file, the list of files does not refresh.
The file remains listed even though it's been deleted.
If I manually refresh then the file disappears from the list. Same thing happens if I undo the delete.
I need to hit F5 to make the file reappear in the search list.

Anyone else having this problem or know a fix? Thanks.

Seems to be a Windows 10 prob. I went back to 8.1 and everything was fine.

I know there are solutions for this on this forum but I can't get any of them to work in my specific situation.

I have a program that cannot deal with ZIP files and I need to manually sort them out. What I can do is export a partial location for these ZIP files to a txt files so I have:

What I want to be able to do is create a batch file that will read the location of these files and copy them to a folder. The files are located on a network share but they r are mapped in My Computer. I can modify to the txt file so it gives the full path as a UNC path or a hard path.

I've been trying to get it to work using a For In Do statement but I don't know if that's the best solution. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Situation: I have the simple CMD(DOS) .bat below that i am using to scan networked computers for specific files that need to be overwritten. When the file is found, its path is appended to the resutls log (MS08-070_compname.txt). Limits: Cannot use any third-party software, cannot use GPO, pretty much can't use much else than the DOS CLI basically. A HUGE! annoyance, trust me, I know. I am quite aware of how old the DOS CLI is and that there are much better tools out there, I just simply cannot use them due to implemented network limitations.

I've just bought a new laptop and I need to move my personal files from the old one to the new one. I've tried several methods, but they all give me problems with certain files: some files (and I have not been able to find any pattern here) will simply not copy over.

What I've done:
Move files onto an external USB drive and then copy them onto the new laptop.
Take out the old HDD and connect it to the USB port of my new laptop.

In both cases there are files that request admin permission before starting to copy, but the admin permission of my new laptop does not work for those files.

How can I get all my files on my new laptop with as little hassle as possible and without losing any files?

P.S. I did not set any special file permissions for any of the files and it looks like most of the files that won't copy over came from email or forum attachments, support downloads from hardware manufacturers etc. This has me even more puzzled since these files are supposed to be shared and should copy over without any problems...

A:File copy/move fail, now files gone?

It should have created a copy...I usually don't pay attention to such, but I think that's what happens.

The files are either moved, copied...or in one location or both.

They don't just disappear, unless one of your drives is defective.

Try running chkdsk /r on the flash drive.

Hi all,

To increase our backup solutions, we have decided to backup our SQL database every hour to a folder within the C drive (we couldn't get it to backup straight to a USB drive). So now we need a way (batch file best solution?) to copy these files to the USB drive, lets say every 1.05hours just after they've been created?

Maybe we could copy the entire folder every hour and delete old backups that are in this folder and to the new place for the backups. (although I guess it won't work as it'll have the same folder name once it has been copied).

Or copy the individual files to that new folder although with this they have all different names so is it possible to copy the newest file to the new folder and then after this delete the old backups from a certain time frame?

Big thanks for your help!

@echo off
XCOPY <source path> <destination path> /w /f /-y

This might work, I'm no expert by any means, but the batch file should copy all the files, and then pause for a hour, and then loop back to the start and complete the same process again.

I want to write a batch file that do this for me:

- makes a directory with the "yy.mm.dd.hh.mm" as the directory name,
- copies files and folders from a TEST directory to above destination,
- copies only new (or modified) files from the TEST directory to a separate folder.

Any Idea?

A:a simple batch file for copy files and folders

To create a directory with the date and time as the name, In a batch file use:

set DirName=%date:~-4,4%.%date:~-7,2%.%date:~0,2%.%time:~0,2%.%time:~3,2%
MD \%DirName%

Then in the same batch file use robocopy to copy files to the new directory

robocopy TEST %DirName% /e

you need to add your own paths and read the robocopy help for the right switches you need.
By default Robocopy copies only files that don't exist in the target directory but because you are creating a new directory every time it will copy every thing in TEST

You could use the /A switch which only copies files with the Archive attribute set.

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

I require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this;

Copy "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker" to "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbutcher"

The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. A:[SOLVED] how to copy all search result files into an USB (even if file names are same

Hello comonforall,

One laborious way to do this would be to temporarily rename them; for instance, if the file is called "Help", rename it to "Help(1)"; then when transferred to their final location, remove the numbers and brackets.

Incidently, what files are you trying to move? If they belong to the Windows XP Operating System; then, transferring them will be useless, because they will not in another location other than the one that they were originally installed.

Post back with the file names.

We've got a file server here in the office on which we have a separate folder for each client. In several of these folders are a document, specific to that client, but with the same name as a similar though not identical document in another client's folder. In other words in client1's folder there may be document.doc and in client2's folder there may be a document.doc. I have need to create a collection of the 400 or so document.doc files in one place but if I were to try to simply copy them from the search result I would get a message asking me if I want to overwrite the files. Is there a way, perhaps from the command line, to copy the files from the search results to the new location and append the name of the folder from which the file is being copied to the file? In other words, client1\document.doc and client2\document.doc will be copied to newfolder\documentclient1.doc and newfolder\documentclient2.doc. Is this something for which I should use robocopy? I've got two computers, one running xp pro sp3 and the other running win 7 pro sp1. The files are on an ms small business server 2011 and will, hopefully, be copied to a file on one of the two local computers from the server. Thanks!

A:copy files from search result and append previous location to file

You cannot copy a file with the same name to a new location without overwriting the previous version. Rename the file before copying it, If you want to keep the original file name in the original folder, then copy it and rename it before moving it. Of course if you rename the file then it will not get updated once changes are made.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to batch files and batch file software, so apologies in advance.

I've done some research on Google etc but I seem to just be getting more and more confused trying to use various different scripts and programs and reading different info on various websites.

This is what I need...

I have a folder with around 2000 files in it. I want to be able to copy certain files from this folder (normally around 40) and place them in a brand new folder, I want to be able to do this with nothing more than a txt file that has all the file names I need copying in it with every file name on a separate line.

I receive around 10 new txt files each day so you can imagine how tedious it is searching through 2000 files, picking out the 40 I need, 10 times a day everyday.

To make things even more complicated, the txt files I receive don't always have the correct file names in them, maybe there's a misspelling or a word or two missing for some of the names. That's ok when I'm going through picking out the files I need to copy myself because I can normally tell which file is being requested, but I can't see it being so easy for a program or whatever to do, I'm guessing it'll need to have a search feature where it picks out the most likely file.

I'd like it to be as automated as possible. I receive the txt file, make sure each file name is on a separate line then a program or script or whatever goes out and picks out the files (or most likely files f... Read more

On my Windows 7 OS I get BSOD at random times. This all started after I got Diablo 3 installed and updated my ati drivers. I don't know if this relevant but either way I have been trying different driver versions the past couple of weeks because I thought this was a driver issue. Then I did a memory test to see if that was the issue, sadly it was not. I decided then to wipe out Windows 7 completely and start fresh. My computer was fine for a while but then I got the same problems coming back. Just recently I installed Speed Fan and saw that my GPU idles at 82c. Lately I get crazy flickering, red dots, and colored blocks all across my screen then a while later the computer will either stop working entirely or just BSOD. After research I see that some people have fan control issues with this card but I have used it for 3-4 years now and this is the first problem I have had.

Currently I am using Windows 8 on the very same computer and I have yet to have any problem (I have not installed any drivers on Windows 8).

I attached the dxdiag and dumps. I am so glad that a forum such as this exists thank you all in advance and I hope someone has some great idea.

I recently had a corrupt version of XP on my system. So, I installed the new one in another directory (just to be safe). The new one works perfectly, fingers crossed, but I still have the old one on the system.

When I boot up it asks me which XP I would like to run.

How do I get rid of the old one, if I do not know which directory the old one is in?

Many thanks.

Hi, do you have more than one partition? Can you launch windows explorer and look in the C:\ drive for a file called Boot.ini (this is a hidden file so you will have to go into Tool-Folder Options-View tab and show hidden files and folder. Also untick Hide protected system files)Open it up in Notepad and copy and paste the content here.

I need help deleting a copy of Win7 Professional from what is now my E Drive. When I try and delete that copy, it tells me I need to be to be an administrator and will not proceed.I upgraded my son's system from an IDE drive to an Intel SSD. I unhooked the old IDE and did a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium, with updates, on the SSD with no issues.
I then plugged in the old drive, deleted the Windows.Old and then tried to delete the Windows directory with no luck (Win7 Professional).
I went into command prompt and set the properties to administrator with no luck.
I used explorer, went into the folder and again set the properties to administrator with no luck.
I then set the "User" as administrator an gave full control to the "User" with no luck.
I'm out of ideas folks. I know there must be something super easy I'm missing but for the life of me I don't know what it could be. Can anyone instruct me on how to get rid of this folder? TIA.

I reformatted, and installed XP again. However, I have the option to boot to 2 windows XP systems when I start my computer. The first one, the freshly installed one (which I want to keep) is fine. But, there are about 4 gigs of harddrive space unaccounted for in my C:// Drive, counting the pagefile and everything on my hard drive. Along with the prompt for the second windows at the startup, this makes me think I have 2 sets of windows installed.

However, there is no other windows folders or anything in my C:// folder. The entire contents of my C:// folder is about 5 gigs and right clicking on that shows it as 9 gigs being used. However, when I try to delete the other partition using the Windows XP CD and the reformat process, I see that there is one 9 gig partition.

So, if there are 2 operating systems installed on the same partition, but no evdience of a second operating system beyond the 4 gigs harddrive space missing. I had a lot more than 4 gigs being used before I reformatted, but I can't boot to the 2nd operating system (my old one), which makes me think that maybe it was incompletely deleted.

My question is: How do I find this phantom operating system taking up 4 gigs of space, and delete it? I know how to hide it from the boot up choices using the boot.ini, but I want my 4 gigs back!

By the looks off it, i suggset wipe everything and start again, seems like you did not do the partition process properly

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

the target Excel files are all based on the same template
there is one worksheet in each of the target Excel files

in the target files, the rows should be copied from the first available empty row, going down

Yesterday a storm was rolling by with high winds and heavy rain, and of course while my computer was on the power went out. Now when my computer got to a certain point during the start-up this appeared.

"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
File record segment 25336 is unreadable.
File record segment 25337 is unreadable.
File record segment 25338 is unreadable.
File record segment 25339 is unreadable.
File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Deleting an index entry from index $O of file 25.
Deleting an index entry from index $O of file 25."

Now I am not sure if the $ is followed by a "zero" or a "capitol O" If this matters please correct me.

My question is what was it deleting? Can I find out exactly what it deleted? Is there something in the Event Viewer that can show me what was deleted?
Another thing to add is that CHKDSK never completed checking and deleting, I keep skipping it during startup and the only reason I do this is because I don't know what is being deleted. The only side effect the computer is suffering from skipping CHKDSK is the desktop loading slowly.

Also after searching "File record segment xxxxx is unreadable." and "Deleti... Read more

Hi, I'm trying to help an aquaintance with issues, his pc, has problems, windows explorer crashes whenever he right clicks copy's pastes or tries to delete a file, I'm trying to get the rest of his specs as I type this, any suggestions?

A:crashes when copy/paste deleting right click

sounds like a context menu confliction. You can use a freeware tool called ShellExView which I have attached for you.

Run the application and then click the 3rd tab along from the left 'Type' so that all the items are listed as type. Scroll down to Context Menu. You will then need to diasable one at a time bu right clicking the item and selecting disable until you find the culprit that is causing the crash...

The correct way is to disable one, reboot and try the right click function again. If it still crashes, disable the next on the list....repeat the process until it no longer crashes...this may take a little time so patience is required.

Once you have the offending item, you will either be able to permanently disable it or uninstall/reinstall the program it's related to.

Hope that helps :-)

While visiting my son, he downloaded the pictures from his digital camera, and somehow he ended up having shortcuts to over 100 pictures on the desktop. I tried to delete them and as fast as I deleted them they kept copying and making more. I finally got rid of them by using the "clean desktop feature", but then when I went to My picture folder I found the shortcuts there were multiplied like rabbits.I started deleting from there, delete 15 and it would automatically start copying back. I have some 78 copies of some shortcuts. How can I get rid of all of these ? And what is causing this "ghost copier" to keep doing its dirty work?
