Streaming Video Crashes my computer!

Q: Streaming Video Crashes my computer!

I have a 5-year old HP Pavilion with Windows XP Media Center 2004 loaded. Up until about a month ago I could watch virtually any streaming video without a problem. Then one by one they all started causing the same total computer crash about 15 minutes into viewing. No problem with listening to NPR, but the streaming video problem exists whether it is PBS, Netflix, Hulu, or others. I clear my cache several times a day and I have updated my Silverlight, FlashPlayer, etc. till I'm blue in the face and nothing works. The tech guy at Hulu told me my computer was just too old. The Netflix tech guy said it was a problem with Microsoft. And I can't get any help at Microsoft. So am I just not going to ever be able to stream video again? Otherwise, my computer works fine - and I'm on it 18 hours a day for my work (which is incredibly boring which is why streaming video is so important to keeping my sanity.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can watch home videos etc that are stored locally on my computer no problem, but if I try watching a full-screen video on hulu.com my computer crashes, saying the video driver failed. I have updated the driver for my video card, but have still encountered the problem, although not as quickly. The two places I have had the issue recently are hulu and watching a video full-screen on Facebook. The videos are fine until I watch them on full-screen. Does anybody have any ideas where to start looking to diagnose the problem?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,

So ive been having this problem for a few weeks now.
Basically, when i watch anything on youtube or icefilms on my laptop that's longer than 5 minutes long or so, my computer abruptly stops, the frame freezes, the sound goes on a loop, all of the lights on my laptop turn on and i have to turn it off.
I can't even use the task manager to shut it down.
My computer has 4 gb of RAM, an intel i3 processor, a nvidia graphics card and I'm running windows 7.
It's a bit under a year old.
I already cleaned out the registry did a disk cleanup and defrag, and now im out of ideas.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how i can fix it?

Hi all. Need a little help.

When I'm watching streaming video on Firefox, most of the time, about 5 minutes or so into it, the browser will crash. Sometimes, even my entire system crashes and restarts on its' own! I've read it might be a RAM or a temperature problem, but I don't really know the first thing about diagnosing, recognizing, or fixing those problems. I've done a Disk Cleanup and a Defrag, but that doesn't seem to work. I've got more than 20% on my Hard Disk and 448 MB of RAM.

Not sure what else to do. Anyone have any ideas?

[EDIT: Ah, now that I thought about it, it happened when my son was playing some games on the internet. I believe it was the Nick Jr. website. Not too sure which program Firefox uses to play the game.]

"Hi!
Have been trying to use PPLive but it BSOD crashes my computers. My old notebook (with limited memory) and newer dualcore desktop both are stable windowsxp always on machines with no overheating problems. The notebook crashes during the first hour of running, the desktop generally crashes later but has never run more than 30 hours before bluescreening.

Other streaming video players like Sopcast and Tuiplayer run with no problems for ever but I find the program choice lacking on those so I want to have PPLive.

In general people seem to think that it is a good program so one wonders if my two main machines are the only ones around that canít run pplive. I have za security suite and other than that I use only general software that should not cause conflicts with anything.

Anybody else experiencing similar problems with PPLive?

These crashes are mostly impacting my game playing, though the system does crash, rarely, while streaming video... which is why I am posting here and not (yet again) in the Blizzard forums. I play World of Warcraft. The crashes have been happening for almost a year, though they are happening much more often now.
Over the course of the past year, I have used driver cleaners, updated drivers and just recently ran Memtest86+ all night, 5 full passes, no errors.
As Blizzard recommends, I have deleted (renamed) the Cache, Interface and WTF folders with no luck. The WoW repair utility reports no problems.
On those rare instances when I am able to prevent the whole system from crashing (by tapping the Escape key) I am getting Error #132 Fatal Exception Access Violation, reported by WoW.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, OEM, original installation (not an upgraded version)
My machine (hardware) and my installation are about a year and a half old.

Grrrr... I can't attach the zip file. The file selection dialog box says "No items match your search"... but I am not searching, I am clicking directly on the zip folder and I have checked to make sure the zipped folders and files are in the zip folder.

Hello All, I have recently purchased Sirius Satellite Radio which allows users to log onto their website and listen to Streaming Radio from the comfort of your home.

It works on friends computers, and at the library but when I try to access it at home here it freezes every single time and causes my computer to crash.

I believe it uses Windows Media Player to stream the radio station using their own pop up applet.

I have run virus scanners, spyware scanners, reinstalled windows media player, did disk cleanup, defragmented, etc.... nothing has worked.

I am at my wits end, is there anything else that I could do to get it working? I believe it uses ActiveX?? I'm unfamiliar with it, but perhaps I have activex errors.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, i got this new computer about 3 weeks ago. When i watch streaming (twitch.tv mostly), sometimes it will freeze my browser for 5sec-10sec (but the sound is still going) and come back after. When i try to watch it in 720p or HD, it will lag but only the video 1/2 of the time, while the sounds is just fine.

I updated all my drivers and reinstalled my firefox/chrome.

Over 720p will work for 15mins then starts lagging like crazy. A

Also, when i open anything (i think with ''Flash'') my browser will freeze for 5sec. The chat from twitch.tv beside the video will take for ever to load and make my browser lag.

Thank you.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio running Windows 7. When I watch online videos (can be Youtube or any other kind of streaming video) my computer has been freezing very often lately (at least twice a day). When it freezes the computer stops and I can't move the mouse or do anything but the sound from the video persists as a slowed down, very roboty sounding version of the real sound. This will go on for about a minute and then the sound will stop. Eventually the computer will unfreeze itself after between 2-10 minutes of sitting there doing nothing and then the video will resume as if nothing happened (sometimes between 1 and 2 seconds of video have been skipped). Is there any fix to this problem?

Hey guys,

This one has been eluding me so I'm looking for outside help.   This computer belongs to a friend of the Wife, who uses it for World of Warcraft and watching videos on youtube and hulu.   She says it's frozen up off and on over various incarnations and has had some hardware changed (gpu, hard drive for sure- memory and motherboard have never been changed).

Hey guys, so when I am streaming youtube or TV shows, my computer will all of a sudden freeze up, the mouse won't move, CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing. for an instant the sound will become loud and just white noise (about 3 seconds). After this, the computer will sit at that stage, frozen and will never change, the screen won't go black, I need to do a hard reset to restart it. I have recently upgraded to windows 8.1.

My hardware is:
Mobo:ASRock 970 Extreme4
CPU: AMD FX 4100 Quad Core 3.6GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
8Gb RAM

I have tried manually installing the newest driver for graphics card from the website. I have tried reinstalling adobe flash as well.

Has anyone got any ideas? I am out of them. It will usually crash within minutes of streaming, I have been using the computer at this moment for about 40 minutes without streaming and it has not crashed, apart from this, I don't have any other proof that it is crashing due to the streaming, but it is fair enough to assume it is.

Cheers guys

WHENEVER I try to stream video from the internet my browser and whole computer freezes and I have to do a hard re-boot. Be it with WMP, Quicktime or realplayer or anything i can never manage to play a video. After this happens it won't let me close the browser or even do Control, Alt, Delete.
This problem started after i'd got my computer back from repair sorting out a virus, it might be related because the malware is still there being annoying it's just supposedly inactive.

With quicktime a tiny snippet of audio can be heard for a few seconds before it freezes and with WMP i think it says "error loading codec" or something.

Oddly, youtube type videos are fine. I know other people have posted in with similar problems but i've had no luck fixing it. Any help would be much appreciated,

I'm running XP SP3 Home Edition. Whenever I watch streaming video, on YouTube, newscasts, TV shows, etc. the computer reboots without warning, sometimes right when I start the video, sometimes a number of minutes in.

I've checked the temp in the BIOS and the CPU doesn't seem to be overheating. I've also disabled "automatic restart on system failure", but that has not prevented the reboots. I can't find anything in the Event Log that relates to this.

I've wondered if my video card maybe cannot handle newer video? It's not on-board, but a PCI card: RADEON 7000 from ATI Technologies, Inc. This card has VGA and DVI, but my monitor only has VGA, so that's what I'm using. I updated the driver to the latest available from ATI (this helped for a bit, but then the reboots happened again). The driver date is 5/3/2006, which is probably the last driver they will ever put out for that particular card.

Any help would be appreciated. I just want to be able to view video!

Are you using Internet Explorer? I recommend you install Firefox and use that as your main browser. You have to install the flash plugin first, however, to make youtube videos work. When you go to a webpage with videos, instead of the videos, you'll see a 'you are missing a plugin message'. Click on that to install it.

Hey, I recently started having a problem with my computer where it will freeze whenever I try and play any type of streaming video, or when playing music through itunes. When it freezes, I can still use the mouse, but clicking (left or right) does nothing, on anything, and pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing either, so I have to hold down the power button to turn off computer then turn it back on.

Also, when it freezes, any audio playing at the time starts looping, about 1-2 seconds worth of audio just looping.

I have tried running AVG virus scan, came up with no problems, Spybot and Adaware, came up with stuff, fixed it, no change. Used a registry cleaner, fixed it, cleaned it up, no change. Ran Chdsk and it cleaned some stuff up but no change.

In the event log, it shows absolutely nothing when this happens, under any heading. Ive tested this using the itunes freezing recently, and it will show itunes service starting, then the next event is event log starting when I restart the system.

However, I did find some stuff from when it started (around 12:21 am Dec. 25th) which is:

Hi everyone,

A few days ago my computer started freezing whenever I watched video with any media player or online. The video will play from anywhere between 30 seconds and a few minutes. I'm getting no error codes, no BSOD, no screen tear or blocks, the video and audio just freeze and I get no keyboard or mouse response so I have to restart the computer. I get no problems just being online or using word processors, seems only problem is when I play video or play games.

I've had issues with my graphics card before so I'm guessing that's the problem again, but I'm not sure so that's why I'm here.

My computer specs are:

Intel i5 2500k Sandy Bridge
ASrock P67 Pro3
8GB G.Skill Ripjaw
ASUS nVidia GTX 560Ti
650W PSU

I just ran FurMark stability test on fullscreen and I was averaging 100fps and 75C for 60k frames with no problems. Don't know if that helps at all.

If you need more info I'll do what I can to get it for you. Thanks for taking any time to help me out.

Just to clarify my computer specs, copied from an older thread, everything is the same still. I mistakenly thought I had a 650W PSU.

Hello Bleeping comp.
I have a small Acer notebook which has been running fine up until this point.
Lately i have been having trouble using video streams from sites like gametrailers and youtube
the videos eventually load slower than usual but the sound is choppy as is the video, i can hear the the audio skipping very slightly.
Also the sound files (the opening startup sound windows makes, or the pop up error message sound) have been skipping and sound very choppy.

I haven't gotten any important error messages lately either.
If it helps i run VIPRE Antivirus software but it hasn't found anything that could be causing this.
Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: i forgot to say that all other parts of my laptop are running smoothly which is why the problem is so confusion to me

A:Youtube, video streaming problems, slow computer

When you say small Acer is it an Aspire One with SSD? If so I found a small program that makes it run as fast as my tower, it has no issues with streaming video or for that matter nothing else!

CPU: Intel i7 2600k @3.4
GPU: Asus ENGTX 570
RAM: 8 Gb Corsair Vengeance
Mobo: Asus P8p67 Deluxe

Description:
The computer freezes completely and any audio being played stutters. This lasts only for about a second or two and then the computer resumes normal function. This only happens 1 time every few minutes and more frequently while gaming, so Im assuming its a graphics card issue.

I have noticed this problem happening while streaming videos on Netflix, and while playing games. Originally I thought it was a hard drive problem because I have heard the Marvell SATA controller has had issues. But that isnt the problem.

All of my drivers are up to date and there hasnt been a BSOD or any error message. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place for this.

starting a couple months ago I began to have this issue of my computer doing a hard shutdown at first seemingly randomly. I have now been able to narrow the issue down to whenever data is being downloaded.

Streaming video seems to be the worst; the computer will only last between 2-30 seconds before shutting down, but it also occurs when downloading multiple files

specs are:

mobo: MSI K9N Platinum (MS-7250)
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ @ 2000 MHz
Chipset : nVidia nForce 570 Ultra
Physical Memory : 2048 MB (4 x 512 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3
Power: 450 watt Antec sp-450

I have attempted the following fixes:

- reinstalled windows

- virus scanned including boot scan.

- updating display drivers/ uninstalling display drivers

- changing and disabling network ports. also installed another network card to try it.

- CPU heat monitoring. cpu heat stays around 31 C and at most reaches 44 C. shutdown appears unrelated. GPU never goes above 55 C

- Dust. Fully removed mobo, cpu and thoroughly cleaned for dust. also dusted fans.

- uninstalled flash player, reinstalled. reinstalled earlier version.

- updated bios version

Frankly, I've run out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a desktop or laptop? What OS? What brand or is it custom built? What do you use the computer for? ie: gaming, surfing, server etc.? It sounds like it might be a power unit or memory problem. To test memory it's a pain but you can test them one at a time to see if they work and windows recognizes them. Let us know more about you computer and remember it's Friday so please be patient and don't get frustrated.

Hi,

I posted in the Web & Email forum, and they said I should post my HJT log here. I'm mostly looking to get rid of unnecessary processes so I can speed up my computer a little. I see various things here I never use--Spy Sweeper, Yahoo, AOL, etc--but I want to make sure I'm getting rid of the right things.

Hello there members ,

I'm working on my mom's computer again. Last time I was here it had a bunch of viruses, and the good folks here helped a lot to get it functional again. It does not have a virus now, nor malware, but it is extremely slow. Trying to play music from Internet stations or watch youtube videos online is impossible, and overall it feels sluggish.

The Windows Task Manager shows CPU usage pretty low at 4% or so. 71 processes running which doesn't seem high to me. I see System Idle Process, CPU at 99? Not sure that's it though. There's probably about 55% or so available on the C disk drive. I'm about to defrag it and see if that fixes anything, but I'm pretty doubtful.

I've run all the usual anti-spyware (Spybot + Malware bytes), and anti-virus (Avira) but that hasn't helped a thing. What are some things I can do to troubleshoot?

BTW it's Windows XP on this machine. Any assistance is most appreciated

A:Slow Computer - Herky / Jerky Streaming Audio Video

Did you used to have the problem before your malware issues? Playing audio and video online could simply be an issue with your Internet connection. When you say playing is impossible, what does that mean, nothing comes out, stuttering.... Have you measured your upload and download speed? Speedtest is fine, if you avoid hitting the ads. What sort of things are sluggish? Page changes, mouse movements, programs starting up.........The System Idle process being 99 means it's not very busy! 71 processes does seem a bit high but these days every man and his dog wants to run a service on your PC. Mine are currently 54. I would have thought that during your malware removal exercise, others in this forum would have indicated what programs and services do not need to be running.

Videos Pause Anywhere! Internet and on Computer, Streaming and Playing in Video Players..Anywhere!! HELP!!!!

No matter where I play videos they pause or freeze or go very slow..I can hear the audio but the video freezes like when it needs buffereing.

Usually in Youtube if it does that I will pause it and wait for it to load and then play it and everything goes smoothly. One day I realized that pausing and waiting wasn't working anymore. It continues to freeze and be pausey. I decided it's my video streaming and internet.

Then I tried to play a video file in Sony Vegas' Trimmer (Which usually plays everything fine) and it was still doing it. I tried Media Player Classic and the same thing. When I play videos in Windows Media Player it's just black with sound. I'm so lost..I searched everywhere and everyone's problems almot seems like mine but it was always something different so I can't use their solution.

Everytime I restart the computer the problem goes away..Then it comes back later...This is turning into an everyday thing..I'm very frustrated.

Does anyone know what this specific problem may be?

Or did anyone experience this before?

How can internet videos and video files both be a problem?
Sounds like a Display problem but I'm not sure about that at all.

Can you help?

It's like a horror movie for me. I edit videos all day. I need video playback.

I'll keep this short and sweet because I know how busy you guys are.
I built a gaming computer from scratch, there were a lot of problems even getting it working initially this time, as compared to the last one I built that I had zero problems with ever.
I am getting a lot of BSOD's, games freeze and crash, movies freeze and crash, and streaming does too. In addition, I am getting an error occasionally with the GPU that tells me it has timed out and reset the GPU. I used the windows recommended fix for this and set the response timeout time to 8 seconds, since I have done so I have only seen this problem once. I was wondering if I had too little power for my system, but I have seen threads with similar problems that have plenty of power. I followed the instructions to the best of my ability, and you should find all of the information you have asked for below. Please don't hesitate to ask for anything else you may need. I truly appreciate what you guys are doing here for so many people.

IMO, the suggested fixes for the TDR timeout of the video card only conceals the problem - it doesn't fix it.If the card is timing out, then fixing the cause of the timeout is preferable (IMO) to just lengthening the timeout. Unfortunately it appears that the system has pirated software. Please get a legitimate copy installed and we'll be glad to help. Here's suggestions on how to ensure that your version is legitimate:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuinePlease be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.As a courtesy, I will offer an analysis of your issues using the reports you provided.I will not answer any questions about the analysis until the system is made legitimate. If you do make it legitimate, please submit a new set of reports for us to check.Just FYI, sometimes the owner won't know about this.  So here's 2 scenarios that might ring a bell:- if they had a "friend" help with the computer - and the "friend" installed a pirated copy.- or they used a copy that they had from another OEM computer.  The OEM license is tied to the hardware that it came from - so you can't just use it on another system (that means that it's pirated). And here's the analysis... Hi,
I'm having a serious problem with windows 7. When i open a video, even if it is a youtube video the computer blacks out and the only way to reverse it is through manually turning off (holding the power button until it turns off). This has been happening for a while now. Sometimes the pc only works if I turn it on using the safe mode because, otherwise, it crashes again just before showing the desktop. It shows me the following message describing the problem:

Can anyone please help?

I have a HP Touchsmart PC (I don't even know the model but it is the first Touchsmart model I believe--I'm at work right now). It's 32-bit & has an AMD processor.

So, I upgraded (didn't do clean install) & thought everything was okay until I played a video. After a few seconds of playing my screen went black, the computer froze, and I couldn't do a thing. I had to restart & thought that might fix it. This happened about 3 more times, and then I had to go to work.

Also worth mentioning, for the few seconds video DID play, the quality is not nearly as good.

*Finally, I put my SD card into the card reader (which is built into the computer), and all the files became corrupted. I couldn't do anything with them! I had to just format the card. I'll test this more when I get home too.

I guess I'll try calling HP for help tonight when I get home, but I've heard they aren't much help when it comes to Win 7. I guess they've been very busy with problems after upgrading.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all, unfortunately my first post is on bad news. Over the last few days I built my second pc. Everything went well until I sat down to play some games (specifically world of warcraft with video settings on high) I was overjoyed with the performance until suddenly the screen froze the image and then rebooted the computer. Once I got back into the game it did it 2 more times within 30 minutes, sometimes freezing the image and sometimes going to a black screen, but always crashing. Its been 2 days of crashes and they seem to be getting more varied. Sometimes the image freezes, the audio because garbled and then the whole thing crashes, sometimes the video freezes and I continue to hear the game playing still, rarely it doesn't crash but stays frozen until I restart, and on a few occasions (seemingly when I alt+tab fast enough) the picture will unfreeze and allow me to continue. There are reports of this sort of thing being caused by the game world of warcraft itself, so I tried Battlefield 2, another graphics intensive game, and got 1 hang in 30 minutes...this was one of the rare times I was able to alt+tab save myself. I'm just sick over this problem, having spent all my time and money in hopes of having a nice computer for myself and now this.

As for the possibly helpful details:

I'm using Windows XP 64 bit version, fully updated.
AMD X2 3ghz cpu, running fairly constantly in the 45c temperature range

Ok, I bought a Geforce Ti4200 64MB about 7 months ago, and it worked perfectly untill about a week ago, it died on me. I sent it back, and got a replacement, same excact thing. I install it, with the newest drivers, (already had). Thing is that when I try to run a game, not even 5 seconds pass, and the screen goes blank, like its goes into hibernation, and the computer crashes. I have to hit the reset button.
I'v tried changing the resolution, refresh rates, formating my HD, and installing Windows ME (re-installed XP). Used a bunch of different NVIDIA drivers, cant change IRQ, but they worked together with the old card :/ Even got RivaTuner to change AGP rate.
I dont understand why it doesnt work now, when the old one worked for months, PLEASE Help!!
