Solved: Windows XP Welcome Screen disappears

Q: Solved: Windows XP Welcome Screen disappears

Hi all,

I have a windows XP Pro SP2 installed on my Toshiba Satellite L 305-s5955.
Machine details : Intel Celeron, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, 2MB L2 Cache.
My problem is that the welcome screen doesn't show up at startup and windows logs on automatically to Administrator instead of prompting for a user account selection. I checked out microsoft's tips but they were not any help.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305281
I have a password protected, private, Administrator account with a different name. (i.e. Both default administrator and new administrator account have password protection).

Switching of fast user switching or using the classic logon style didn't solve the problem. How can this be solved?

Thanks

Addisu

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lately my pointer is disappearing after i login from sleep or locked computer.

I had this problem in the past but it got solved after i restored my PC, now it came back to haunt me.
I am guessing some updates disrupted with the mouse cursor (not an expert opinion).

I've tried many things but the issue seems to be persistent.

Here are some things I've tried with no results:

Changing the pointer options (hide while you type, pointer trails, ctrl to highlight) and combinations of them.

I tried using different pointers (Black, White, Black small, etc)

Also tried using troubleshooting the software changes, sfc /scannow, clean registry with ccleaner, rebooting (many times).

It seems to be a problem with no concrete solution.

The only solution that I found is (Clt-Alt-Del) it changes the screen and the pointer appears again, if I lock the computer it is gone once more.

If somebody can help i would appreciate it.

thanks

Hi to All on TSG,

Has anyone any ideas, please, as to why this happens?

Over the years .. I've had his occasional problem also.
Seems like a fresh install of Windows will fix it .. (for awhile)

You got me curious again, I went Googling .. And found This
Most of the Google hits are the reverse problem ??

I currently have an old drive that has this problem ..
And disabling the Themes service seems to have fixed it.

I don't know why this happens .. Maybe Someone who knows why .. will check in

Hi, I am working on an Acer Aspire, Pentium D, Vista, 2GB ram. After about 45 minutes, the screen blanks out. Have to reboot to get it going again. I ran Malwarebytes, it found 19 errors. I thought this might have solved the problem, but no. I also then changed monitors, but the problem is still there. I cleaned out the case, the 2 motors were really clogged up, I thought it might be heat related. Then I ran a memory test and it stopped working again. It has 2 memory chips, I have removed one and am running the memory test again. Am I going in the right direction? Or is there any other ideas?
Thanks

Hi all:I hope that this is the right board for this problem, even though it may not be primarily a "Touch" issue.  My problem is that I keep losing my pointer/cursor on my HP laptop. Here are my specs and details of the problem based on a set of questions that I found on another thread: What make / model computer? Windows 10 64bit upgraded from Win 8. Does the mouse left alone disappear or are you clicking on something and then it just disappears? It only (and always) happens when I touch the screen. The cursor disappears instantaneously when I touch the screen. It happens whether I have a USB mouse plugged in or not. How do you normally resolve the issue? Except for restarting the laptop, the only way that I can get the cursor back is to go to Personalize/Themes/Mouse Pointer settings. I then have to close the Mouse Pointer settings windows (clicking OK) while shaking the mouse. How is your mouse connected to your computer? Wireless but as stated above, it also happens when the mouse is not plugged in. One screen or two screens? If one, have you ever used two? One screen, never two. More information:1) The cursor is not set to disappear when typing.2) I read that this could be a problem with the Touchpad, so I downloaded the Synaptics Pointing Device driver for my laptop from the HP website. As a result, I cannot search for applications. Sometimes i will begin to type and the results will appear for a split second before the entire box disappears.I am unsure if this issue could be related to another issue where my screen blacks out and displays random pixelations before it "runs into an issue" then reboots my computer. This has happened several times over the past few weeks and seems to be happening increasingly often.Drivers up to date, system is updated, ran a diagnostics test and no issues appeared. Hello, I have a Dell laptop 15R 2nd Gen i-5 processor running Windows 7 Home 64bit.

The problem I am having is this: Mouse disappears on right side of screen. The entire right side of screen (not just in the lower corner). If I move the mouse 6 inches to the right off screen, then I would have to move it 6 inches to the left again until it re-appears. If I moved the pointer 1 foot to the right, I would have to move it 1 foot to the left until the pointer re-appeared again.

It's as if the pointer kept going on to a hidden screen??

A:Mouse Pointer disappears RIGHT side of screen

Looks like a mismatch between physical resolution and the larger virtual desktop resolution. Should that be the case, a few users prefer the larger space to work with and can navigate and bring into view the unseen parts as needed.

I have been experiencing OE randomly crashing when I click on Create a new Message. What in fact happens is that OE disappears from the screen but remains running in the background. I can see msimn.exe in Task Manager / Processes. The only way around this is to restart the machine.

The machine and memory tested as having no errors at the retailer that it
was purchased from.

I have just done a chkdsk and there were no errors found.

I have tried the following to relieve it:

 Update Windows Media Center
 Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled IE6
o Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Update the computer?s BIOS
 Reformat the HDD and reinstall Media Center
o Reinstall all programs
o Update
? Create the identities and import the mail and address books
? Delete the identities and recreate them without importing the old mail and address books

In spite of all of this, it still randomly crashes when creating a new message

I am hopeful that someone can tell me what?s wrong

Thanks in advance

Hey there, new here and need some help. Here's what happened:

I opened internet explorer and typed in a google search and hit enter and it popped up a new instance of iexplorer instead of just searching in the current window as usual. Then, links I clicked on opened new windows which is not the usual setting. When I clicked in the middle of text on a web page it would highlight everything. Strange little things like that.

So, I clicked start > Turn Off > Restart and nothing happened; it just went back to the desktop. Pushed the Windows key and it wouldn't open the start menu. Finally I had to do a hard shut-off.

I waited a minute and booted the computer back up when it stopped at the login/password screen as usual. I typed the password and hit the Enter key and it just deleted the password and stayed on the page. So, I retyped it and clicked with the mouse on the green arrow button with the same result. Laptop built in mouse button did the same thing. Eventually it just froze entirely and I could not even type in the password box. Also, the little help icon on this screen would not bring anything up; it's like all the keys got remapped to different functions.

The only recent updates were the automatic Windows updates upon shutdown earlier today and the comp worked fine after booting up after that the first time.

Any thoughts?

I'm on a Dell laptop with XP Home.

Thanks

A:Satellite U840T - Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom

Hi

I?m confused.
Your issue isn?t described very well.

What do you mean exactly by: ?Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom in black bars at the top??
Do you mean the touchpad or cursor?
The notebook?s touchpad supports the Gesture control feature (Multi Touch) and this feature could be configured in touchpad settings:
+Control panel -> mouse -> Device settings tab -> Settings+

There you can find also the option called ?Edge swipes? which opens the Charms bar, app Switcher, and Application bar just by moving finger from the edge of the touchpad in towards the center.

In such case the cursor would not be visible.

I hope someone can help. W10 (64 bit Home) has been working OK on this laptop but recently I have been able to open the settings screen for only a micro-second. Having found people having the same problem I have tried running SFC several times, as suggested, but it says it found an issue it could not resolve.

Again following instructions on the forum I tried running DISM with an iso loaded and this hung at 40% for hours (overnight). I could not find a solution to this, but someone posted their CBS log and was given a solution to the original problem.

I do not understand what to look for in the log file, but there are several lines that mention an error. I attach the log file (zipped as it was too big for the forum), and if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Thanks

This is ridiculous. Am using IE7 on Gateway Essential 500 Desktop Computer. Windows XP Pro, SP3, 256MB RAM, Intel III Processor.

When I try and open IE7 with or without add-ons, it opens then disappears, or just opens and sits there, blank. (mostly it disappears). I can't even get into the "internet properties" cause when I try to, it just gives me a quick hourglass then disappears - so I can not reset IE7.

So, I ran AVG8.5 virus scan - nothing. Ran Spybot S&D, nothing. Ran SuperAntiSpyware - nothing. Ran Spy Doctor - nothing.

Next I reinstalled IE7 - didn't work.

NOW WHAT?

Obviously since I was able to reinstall IE7 (after downloading from internet on a different computer then transferring the file to the computer) I DO have internet connection - really, I do! Just NO working browser, specifically IE7.

No, I do not want to upgrade to IE8. I want to repair IE7, or find out what the hec is going on and fix it. I am comfortable with working inside the regisrty.

Please help.

Thanks.

Ps. I CAN browse the internet if I go through AOL.

My internet connection is cable at 20mps+

Could this be my video card? which is very sad, if it is why does it work up until that point? Could I disable the 3d acceleration on my computer? is there anything I could do to fix ? or am I out of luck? I really like this game so any help would be appreciated.

A:Solved: Mouse Disappears

Hey Bratt,

Just a guess, but try this... it's harmless.

When that happens, press alt-tab and continue to hold alt. A small prompt should come up in the middle of the screen. Try to refocus on your game by continuing to press tab until your game is selected again. Also, look for a firewall exception prompt, or any new window that might halt the game at this point.

If this makes your game work again, the game developer made a boo boo.

If this does nothing, the application has lost your mouse as an input. Again, this is rarely your fault if your mouse works for everything else.

Try plugging your mouse (assuming USB) directly into the system. If another device is drawing too much power, it can lag the mouse and give garbage to the program.

That's the best I have for now, but better than anyone else was doing..

I'm using an HP Elitebook 6930p with Windows XP and an HP EN488UT docking station. When I use the computer by itself the Network Connections shows "Local Area Connection 3 Connected Intel 83567LM Gigabit Network Connection" and I can connect to the internet. When I am in the docking station, I can also see this connection, as long as my notebok is open when I start up. However, if i start the computer with the lid closed (I just want to use the external monitor, not the notebook monitor) that network connection does not appear and I cannot connect to the intenet. How can I fix this? Thanks!

My computer, running Win7 Home premium connects to the internet ..... so it seems, as it always has and as it did last night before I shut the system down. But today when I turned on the system shortly after I connect everything slows to a stop, like there is no connection, like it just disappeared. For the first min. or so it's OK and all indications are that it's working just fine, the automated troubleshooting (I'm sure is useless) finds nothing and all appears OK when you look at the connection setup page (image attached). The only thing that has changed that I know of was a bunch of MS updates were installed.

Anyone else have this problem or have in insight into fixing this?
Thanks,

Steve

P.S. I have other computers on the network and they all connect just fine.

I downloaded a few utilities from Microsoft (cleanup, speedup, etc.) and when ran they appear as command prompt and disappear in a fraction of a second.

Example: One of the utilities is to see what processes are running and the name of the program or programs using that process.
Not too long of a list, but would require a few minutes to observe.
However the command prompt showing the list comes and goes in a sec.

What's up with that?

Hey,

I've the exact same problem as written here: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/947635-buffalo-whr-hp-g300n-wireless.html ... 2 years later

Router:
Router Model WHR-HP-G300N
Firmware Version DD-WRT v24SP2-EU-US (08/19/10) std - build 14998 (as far as I know the latest version)

The problem started kinda over night. One day everything was working perfect, the next day it started.
From one moment to the other the SSID disappears, all notebooks get disconnected, and only a reboot (that I do via LAN connection) or power off -> on helps.

I checked the router while the SSID was gone, and everything seems fine. It even shows me that the notebooks are still connected

As I said: from one day to the other. No setting changed, nothing.
I googled already a bit, but the only usefull I found was the old thread in here.
I'm clueless, maybe one of you has an idea

Hello and welcome to TSF

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache]
"Persistent"=dword:00000001

Save this as fix.reg, Choose to 'Save type as' as All Files. Save it to your desktop.

i installed a clean installation of vista in a separated partition from xp, but now my laptop boots straight into vista. if i go in XP repair console and fix the mbr i got xp loading again but then vista disappears.

What can i do to fix this and save hours of work?...

Many thanks.

A:[SOLVED] xp disappears from boot list

In Vista, you need to edit the bootloader so that you have the option of loading either XP or Vista. Doing this is easier if you use one of the programs available for download. I use VistaBootPro 3.3 that you can download from here.

I'm having a problem with the Task Manager and Regedit. The applications appear for a couple of seconds and disappear. I've read a couple of forums about this topic. I'm guessing it is a virus and I have ran different virus checkers, adware and spybot and detected nothing. I made a copy of TaskMgr.exe and renamed it differently but I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that. I used HT and this is what I got. I don't understand what it means so if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.
