Endless restart loop Windows 10 on Thinkpad Yoga Machine type 20CD

Q: Endless restart loop Windows 10 on Thinkpad Yoga Machine type 20CD

Hello, One of our ThinkPad Yoga goes into an endless loop when attempting to reboot. The O/S was upgraded from Windows 8.x (as shipped) to Windows 10 (MS free upgrade) a long time ago and there have been no previous issues restarting. I believe the version of Windows is 10 Home Edition. The HDD is almost fully utilised (1 gig free). Irrespective of the options taken, on boot up the screen flickers what looks like a CMD window in the top left of the display twice very quickly, then after the Lenovo splash screen is displayed:Preparing automatic repairThen Diagnosing your PCAutomatic RepairYour PC did not start correctly Restart just continues in the loop irrespective when continue or repair is selected. I?ve taken Advanced options:Continue ? Just continues in the loopUse a device ? I?ve tried creating another rescue boot disk from another yoga without a CD Rom ? attempting to create it on a USB stick but the create repair disk in Windows 10 Pro doesn?t allow USB stick as an optionSystem restore point shows me 4 states however when selecting any I get the message the backup drive cannot be foundI can access a CMD promptStartup repair - couldn?t repair your PC see log file c:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\SrtTrail.txt. I?ve attached this file that I copied to USB via the CMD Prompt. I have renamed the file from txt to doc. The error message in the log file states The operating system version is incompatible with Startup RepairHow do we covercome this problem please? As this PC was upgraded from V8.x we don?t want to restore to V8.x and if possible just want to repair or resurrect the last good known restore point. On another Thinkpad Yoga (X1) Machine type 20F0 with Win 10 Professional installed, I have tried creating a rescue disk but am not given the optoin of creating it to a USB Stick (only CD ROM option), to enable the other Thinkpad Yoga to be started. Will the reset pin at underside of the machine always reset to the machine to factoryHow can we get the prompts to boot the PC into safe mode? What is the best way to re-enable Windows 10 on this PC?All reponses appreciated. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Endless restart loop Windows 10 on Thinkpad Yoga Machine type 20CD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lenovo Yoga 20CD will not power on after shut down yesterday. When I plug in charger the red dot above the "i" blinks three times. I have removed battery, held power for five seconds and put battery back in, no change

I'm facing the same issue. Suddenly it won't power on. Only LED indicator blinks when plugging in the power supply; and the LED turns on for a few seconds without plugging in the power supply. Beside that nothing happens. Any clue how to solve this? I've checked the connectors but they look ok. I've also tried resetting via "reset button" on the backside. further I've tried several sequences pushing the power button and holding it for 30 - 60 seconds. So far nothing helped. Any clue? Thanks.

After running updates the computer will no longer POST.Turning on power only boot cycles (turns on for 3 seconds, turns off, turns on etc.), screen is black, no POST.Possibly a BIOS update fail? Need to spend a grand to get a new MB?? Tried removing the battery, drain power, use only power cord. No luck.

A:After update ThinkPad Yoga, 20CD cannot POST!

I wish they would stop pushing BIOS updates other than at the request and guidance of support, they seem to fail too often and brick far too many systems.       You can usually perform a Boot Block Recovery on modern motherboards, but I do not think Lenovo has implemented that technology on their laptops for security reasons, but you might still check with Lenovo Support to see if they have any options short of replacing the system board.  BTW:   Does your system have the emergency reset hole on the back side of the case, and if so have you tried unplugging it from the power supply, and then pressing it for about 10 seconds or so?  (see item #1 on page 46 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual) Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s1_yoga_hmm_en_sp40a26742_01.pdf

Long story short, i erased everything and performed a clean install of Windows 10 64bit and the computer stopped shutting down or go into sleep mode. I had Windows 8.1 64bit, i upgraded it to Windows 10 about a year ago, when it first came out. The upgrade went almost fine, some bit issue with the OS but nothing serious, so i went on till i decided, to correct those little issues, to perform a clean install.  So i downloaded the media creation tool, the version with the anniversary update, and erased everything, but keeping the recovery partition. After the install, i started having troubles with entering sleeping mode or shutting down the laptop.I installed the power management driver i found on the site (n1cku04w). With that I can shut down even if it strangely blinks a few times before shutting down. I can enter sleep mode and wake it up properly if I do it from the start menu, but if i close the laptop or try using the power button takes me to a state where OS is sleeping and HW is still awake, so i can't do anything apart from force it off. Strangely too, the driver on the site is overriden from another version i recieve from System Update app. But, with the version from System Update app, i can't even shut it down properly, the OS dies but the HW is still awake and fully functioning leading me to kill it pressing the Power Button. Anybody have faced the same issue? My trusty old tester with a Q9660 core and an Intel DG43NB board running 7 64bit has suddenly started to go into an endless loop of starting to boot then suddenly stopping.

I don't think it is heat as I have now that long put new thermal in it plus and Arctic Freezer Pro. Have tried reseating the RAM and checking all connections but cannot see anything obviously wrong.

Anyone got suggestions on what I can try next please. I need this machine as my new Ivy B is in need of a reinstall and I just need to mail and stuff while I try and get it fixed.

Does it boot into safe mode. If yes, that would point to a problem with a startup program.

Last night i shut down my pc and it was updating, and i was cleaning my desk and stuff, right? Okay, welll i think i accidentaly pressed something on my keyboard and the moment the computer shut down, it started back on. Just turned itself on. And now everytime i turn on this pc, it loads the motherboard screen and stuff, then there's a black screen and 3 seconds later it restarts over and over, restart, motherboard screen, restart, and restart again. There might be corruptedfiles

A:Computer on an endless restart loop

Unplug AC power, hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain power, plug it back in and try starting again.

If it loops again try interrupting it by tapping the key for BIOS setup, enter BIOS setup to reset to defaults. Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Next try booting the Win7 installation media or System Repair Disk.

Run Startup Repair which should automate System Restore, the most likely solution to interrupted Updates. If not run it yourself from System Recovery Options.

If these fail test your hardware first and then proceed with the other steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

Hello all,

I'm not very familiar with ICT in general so please do forgive me if I misspecify my question. I will try my best.

My computer suddenly started to go for some sort of upgrade and was stuck at 0%. I did not authorize anything as such so I figured it was to update to Win 10 (which I didn't want actually). To solve this, I just pressed and held the power button and turned it back on. Then it started to some sort of endless loop from the Medion loading screen to another blue screen with a text that notified me that something went wrong (there was a sad smiley face above the text).

I managed to get to a menu called "Easy Flash Utility" by pressing F4 and now that is where I'm stuck. I have added photos of this. My laptop is a Medion/Akoya. I also have taped the loop thing, so I'll add that too, if that's useful.

Thanks for your time

A:Win 8.1 => 10, problem endless restart loop

I'm sorry this has happened.  I would put in a windows 8.1disk or a third party backup disk or thumb drive such as Macrium reflect or Acronis and boot from one of those. Follow the instructions to retrieve a backup of your operating system. or If you have a Windows backup image of your computer, this would be ideal. You could use your windows 8.1 disk or repair disc to access features that would let you install a backup image, or just fix the boot process if that is all that is needed (I doubt one would be this lucky), and other features that are available. Other than that the last thing you want to hear is do a complete reinstall of your operating system.  But if you haven't made backups, I do not see any alternatives.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then give Microsoft a call and one of the nice people there can walk you through some smart ways to restore your system. (It was their fault per your comment, so emphasize that if they ask for a credit card.  However, I bet they do it free for you because they help people free with installation issues.. This is my experience.  Good luck.

Windows Action Center displays this error:
Restart to repair drive errors

We found errors on a drive. To repair these errors and prevent loss of data, restart your PC now. The repair could take a while to complete.
The restart completes (doing very rapid checks), and after a minute or so Action Center displays the same error again. This happens every time I start the computer. Sometimes the computer boots straight to the Start screen, and sometimes it boots to a blue screen with the option of sending a report to Microsoft before completing the boot. Sometimes it sends a report with no action required.

I have checked the hard drive using PC Checkup with MyDell, and with TuneUp Utilities, and no errors are reported. Using CHKDSK C: /f /r /x does not complete, but gets stuck at 13%.

I have also used chkdsk to check the two USB external drives that I use, and no errors are found.

[Windows 8.1]

A:Restart to Repair, but endless loop follows

Hi, just saw this.. you've probably solved it by now.

Searching on your error message offers (for example):
Check disk (Chkdsk) runs when you start Windows 8 or Windows 7
"Restart to repair drive errors" keep showing up after reboot - Microsoft Community

You could also try running CHKDSK from a boot CD/DVD.

It would also help if you can identify which disk/partition - if more than one- is being flagged.

Good luck, dalchina

Hello and thanks for looking... Long story short: When I power up, say first thing in the morning, the computer freezes on the screen that offers login to POST and BIOS settings. When I restart the system, it attempts to power up for about 2 seconds, then turns off. After about 5 seconds, it tries again for 2 seconds, then turns off again, and will repeat this cycle indefinitely. A few days ago, it would eventually boot up after 25 or so tries, and everything would be fine. Now it will not boot up, just cycle endlessly trying to power up, then turn off...

The computer is less than two years old. I haven't modded or overclocked anything. Internally, the computer is very clean and not overheating. So, I tried reinstalling Vista. Same problem. I carefully cleaned and reseated every connection in the system. No change. I tried booting from CD. No dice. I even took some joker's advice and bought a new hard drive. Waste of time, nothing changed. For a moment, I was able to get into BIOS, but it froze and I had to restart into my endless loop of frustration.

The only clue I have is, if I remove on stick of RAM, the computer will turn on but just leaves me on a blank, black screen... Of course, Vista cannot work around a missing RAM stick, sooo....

Any ideas, anyone? I am thinking either the power supply or bad RAM, but I have no clue. Thank you for any help!

A:PC hangs on boot, endless loop restart

Ah yes: if I press the restart button on my case, the system completely powers down before attempting to power up again, whereby it enters the endless power up loop...

I was given a laptop by my friend. I attempted to fix it cause it kept crashing on him. So my first idea was to try a fresh install. I can get the computer to install Windows fine. It will load up the first time fine. Once I attempt to install updates, or sometime around then is usually where it begins to go downhill. I don't know if it's caused by me trying to install updates or if the computer is just crashing after a certain amount of time.
After the first time it shuts down it will attempt to start, get to right before the login screen.(when the screen first turns blue) It then begins an endless loop of restarting and trying to load. It then tryed to scan the hard drive for consistency, which got it back into windows for maybe 5 secs. Then back to the loop.
I have changed the battery, harddrive, ram, and the processor seems to be staying at a good temp. I have been able to keep it on if I stay in bios or in the menu when im reinstalling Windows.
I am all out of ideas so if anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Recovery from an endless restart /automatic restart loop.

Hi, I foolishly accepted a Wifi driver update from Windows update, and next restart gave me the traditional blue screen IRQL_not_less_than_or_equal.

So (as usual in my experience) Win 8 went into its automatic repair restart loop, collecting data, restart.. to no avail.

I thought - ok- safe mode. Oh, no F8 (thought I'd enabled that some time back), no boot menu (that's now added).

Ok, Win 8 bootable DVD. Hello, no Startup options after Advanced options. Hmm. That was unexpected.

Ok.. System Restore... yes, 2 restore points (I have a daily scheduled system restore point automatically generated). Oh dear, unexpected prompt about drive needing to be checked. That done, no system restore points.

Ok, what am I left? Ah, Aomei Backupper diskimage. Yep, just 3 days old. Boot disk, external drive, 30 minutes or so, done. Working again.

So what's the issue? Well, I don't understand why Safe Mode (Startup options) weren't available when booting from the Win 8 DVD. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It also seems to me that the restart in the automatic repair sequence is subtly different to restarting from having disconnected power.

So I've now enabled F8 (it's a 5 year old laptop, so no UEFI etc) and added a boot menu with Safe Mode (thanks Brink). (Oh, I also realised I didn't have my daily ERUNT registry backup on this- great for restoring a registry from a boot disk..when nothing else is available).

A:IRQL - Blue screen - endless restart loop

You said it yourself that you installed a wifi driver prior to your system crashing. That's the likely cause.

I am a very frustrated and angry customer at the moment as i keep running into Road Block and unacceptable answers.  This issue is enough to cause me to never buy another Lenovo laptop or any laptop at Best Buy!I bought my computer in July and in September i noticed a key had popped off-  the "< ," key next to the M key.  I have used the key board only when i was setting up-  now at my office and at customers i set it in downward dog mode ;-) and use a blue tooth key board.    So it is not from use that it broke.   I took the laptop into BEST BUY and was told that the key was missing a metal part on the back so they could not fix it onsite-  i would have to send it in and be without my laptop for a week to 10 days - unacceptable -  this was a month or more ago. I searched on the LENOVO website and could not find a way to purchase a single or the entire set of Keys!  I am self employed as a software consultant.   My life is pretty busy and i finally decided today to bite the bullet and ask for a call from Lenovo support.  Again i am told the only way to fix this is to send my laptop in for a repair.  I asked to just be able to buy a KEY - i am told that well they do not sell individual keys - they would replace the entire keyboard!  So sell me the keyboard and or send me one an i will take into best buy to have them replace it while i wait.  They cannot do that.   I live... Hello all. My laptop used work perfectly until the day I decided to remove all the extra stuff by doing a clean install of Windows 10.  I predownloaded all the drivers I would need and then did the clean installation.  Now I have an issue with my wifi.  It randomly drops connection to wifi and is slow to start working again.  After coming out of sleep it does not automatically reconnect to the ap and I have to trigger it manually.  Separately (i think) when coming out of sleep, the login screen does not respond to the keyboard and I am forced to use the mousepad to click or a touchscreen swipe to get to the password field. What I'm seeking is an official list of drivers that are required for a clean windows 10 install on a thinkpad yoga series 20CD.  If order of installation is critical, please give this also.  I believe I downloaded everything available from the support page but just want to be sure.  Sometimes not all drivers are available when filtering by OS "Windows 10".   Thanks in advance. Laptop specs are:512gb ssdmemory card slot2.4/5 n/ac wireless 7260ac w/bluetooth

I've had the X1 Carbon ThinkPad for around 9-10 months, and after about 4 or 5 months I began experiencing issues regarding the USB ports. I use this laptop for gaming as well as school work. The issues began very intermittently, with both USB ports failing (I use a microphone/headset, and a mouse), by seemingly turning off for 1-2 seconds, followed by them turning back on. 90% of the time the USB ports turned back on, but lately there are times where they do not, and I need to restart my computer to be able to use them again. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Drivers for my mouse and headset, as well as the USB drivers under Device Manager. Additionally, I adjusted my power settings to disable USB selective suspend settings, but that did not fix the issue either. By this point, the USB ports will both fail essentially as soon as I begin playing a video game, and at times when I have several tabs open using Google Chrome. Any advice on how to fix this issue?

HI I need a simple estimate of how long my  laptop's screen will last before I need to get it fixed. I cracked the LCD in the screen today, and it looks like there is nothing wrong with it at all unless one looks really closely, or if one looks at the screen from certain angles. I can see the point where the pressure was placed on the screen when i look directly at it, but it isn't too bad. I have to travel tomorrow to Haiti (talk about bad timing) and I need the laptop to work for the three weeks that I will be there. If it can last that long I will be very happy. Then I can fix it when I get back to the States. Below is the laptop information. If anyone knows anything please let me know! X201 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 3626AF5

Hi,My X201 was working perfect untill my screen went black. I searched the web and found out that the Led backlight fuse is broken. I tried to bridge the fuse instead of replacing it, just soldered the connections. It worked perfectly and everything was normal again. After a while I noticed that no matter what I do, the laptop cannot restart. I shuts down completely normal but cannot restart. I thought it might be a windows problem but it was not. I replaced the hdd, installed new windows but no success. I was fed up but it was not a big deal since I could press the power button for 5 seconds and it would shut down. No the most convenient way but I had no other solution. A few days ago, I inserted another hdd in order to retrieve some files off the disk. The laptop could not boot, no matter what. It turn on, all the lights turn on but immediately shuts down. I do not even get to see the boot screen. Nothing at all. I tried with another hdd, same problem. I changed the Ram, no success. So I took the hdd out and tried to boot without any hdd. To my surprise it booted. I got the boot screen and I checked the Bios, everything normal. Then I inserted the hdd while the system was still on, it turned off immediately. It?s the same no matter what I do. As long as any hdd is installed, the notebook won?t boot. I tries to boot, I get no boot screen, just the indicator lights and then it restarts. With the hdd Not installed, I could manage to boot from a USB stick, it worked perf... Read more

I bought a Lenovo laptop in August 2016 and it has been fine till I system restored it because of space  that were being used up to try and clear all of it out. I system restored this laptop February 26 and it is in a start up loop. Lenovo appears on the screen and it says welcome and a little circle thing spins then it goes black then loops again. I can go into bios I can press all buttons but nothing happens even if I try to switch settings so I am asking for any suggesting and resolutions. Because I don't have the money right now to replace the labtop. Thank you for all the responses in advanced.

I just purchased this laptop, I like it alot.   Using the HDMI port and the mini-display port, can I have 3 displays?   The internal touch screen, and then also the moniitor on the HDMI port AND a different monitor on the mini-display port.   That would be 3 displays. I'm just getting into Microsoft Flight Simulator and it will support 3 videos and I want to have all 3 running to get the most from the application. I want to be sure that it isn't either/or on the HDMI and Mini-Display Port, but that I can use both/and. Thanks in advance. Paul

I reset my pc - windows 10 to fix a different issue and on reboot, i see lenovo splash screen, but windows is only visible on external monitor.  I found a batch file fix, but that appears to be related to OLED screens - i don't think i have one.  My problem to start with was minor - every time i unpin Edge and Store, they return... tried registry and appdata location deletes - no success. I know it is a profile issue, tried deleting profile, but work has us login to Azure AD, and that screwed that up - had to reset to start  the process over. Ever since - the laptop screen only shows the lenovo boot splash.

Hi, I recently bought a Yoga 500-14ISK Laptop (ideapad) - Machine Type 80R5 and have used it extremely rarely. I would say I've used it at a maximum of 30-40 hours. I have had some problems with the laptop but nothing that made it completely un-usable until now. On turning on the machine, the network wireless adapter acts strangely, often showing the airplane mode symbol in the task bar. I may or may not be able to connect to my Wifi network but less than 2 minutes later the entire Wifi adapter disappears from the OS, no longer having Wifi settings or being able to configure the Adapter via device manager. I've been told a fix for this may be turning the wireless off and on again via the BIOS but I can't figure out how I access it, considering the first screen I see is the loading symbol for Windows 10. Anyone got any advice? Harrison

The screen of my Yoga 14 ThinkPad Type 20FY touchscreen has cracked. I have a few questions on how to replace the screen.

Serial Number: XXXXXXXX                               Mod edit:  Serial number removed per forum rules
Machine Type Model: 20FY0002US

1. Can I replace the touchscreen with a non-touch screen? It looks like touchscreens are delicate and expensive. I didn't want a touchscreen but Best Buy did not have that in their store.
2. What is the part number for the screen? I need it to purchase online. Online forums suggest opening the screen to see the part number. Is there a way to see part number using model, and machine type (posted above)? I need part number of non-touch screen, if that will work with the laptop.
3. What is the cheapest and reliable place to buy a replacement screen? I plan to replace it myself.

I would be appreciative of your help.

Hi,I received my new ThinkPad X1 Yoga 20FQ one month ago. I'm very happy with it but for one week I'm very often unable to type the power-on password. When I turn on my X1 Yoga (3 times out of 4), the keyboard seems to be not working and I'm stuck at the padlock password prompt. I must insert a paperclip into the reset hole and restart to be able to get the keyboard working and be able to enter the password.  I'm wondering if anyone else have any similar issue and if so, if there is a simple way to fix it? or if I should return the X1 Yoga?  Thanks for your help,Steven

When I press F8 at start up and get to system recovery consoul I run CHKDSK / R and everything comes up ok. No new hardware or software has been added. I am not sure if it is a virus or what.

Thanks
