.ppk files being automatically opened with word

Q: .ppk files being automatically opened with word

Hello,

I am currently studying for an Amazon Web Services (AWS) certificaiton. I need to use their assigned private keys to log-in to VMs. These private keys are given as .pem files and in a program called PuttyGen I convert them into .ppk files so I can use them on Putty.

I accidentally opened one of these .ppk files in Word. Now all .ppk files are saved as Word Docs and I cannot get them to save the way they did before. Please anyone let me know how to fix this. Urgent!!!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have many WP8 files I created that when I try to open them, they give the "convert from MS word 97" dialog box, and when I say ok, fine, I just get "illegal operation" and the program shuts down.

they were created in wp; why can't I just open them in wp? Why are they asking to be converted from ms word? Is there something I can do about this?

thanks

A:Why do Word perfect files want to be opened in MS word?!!!

You still have WordPerfect installed?

If so, select a WP file, then with the Shift key held, right mouse, select Open With, scroll to WordPerfect, select it, ensure that "Always use this program ......" is selected, and OK your way out.

Alright here is the case. I open up MS Word and of coarse you get a blank page. But when you try and open a word file it displays the picture as shown below (first picture). Now when i try and close MS Word, an event happens as shown by the second picture. I click no and yep, you get the third picture. I then cancel this window and i end up back into word, just minus the blank page or open file. Trying to close MS Word again i get the fourth picture and I click no, which now closes word. Overall I just want to be able open a file, and close MS Word without these problems. The fourth picture shows what programs are running in the system tray.

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

Suddenly, I cannot open an: .rtf Microsoft Word document file.

It is an incoming file from a trusted source.

I can download the file, see the corresponding file images, then when I
click on an image, I get a message from Micosoft Word (with the yellow
triangle enclosing an exclamation point) which says: The server application,
source file or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly
installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

Please help me open this file, it is a work-related file, and I've tried so

Was Office loaded on that machine at work?
If so it is my guess that one of two things is happening.

1) The Office dll that displays pictures is resident on the work network and is only loaded when it is needed - thus displaying that message.

2) A similar thing with the document that just the link (and thumbnail) to the pictures were included in the document. The actual pictures are still on the network.

Hey there folks.. I have what may amount to be a small problem or an easy fix but I can't figure it out for the life of me. I have spent the last week researching this problem, off and on.

What I need help with:

I have a semi-complex database in Access 2007 and I will have several forms. I need the forms to have clear fields when the user opens the form. Is there a way to automatically clear the forms upon opening of the form by the user without the need to click a 'clear' button? If so, how do I go about achieving this end?

Thanks,

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)
Running:
HP dv6 Notebook Pc
Intel - i7 - 2630QM CPU @ 2.00Ghz

Windows 7 Home Premium

thanks so much

End If

End Function

If you remove the two lines

objWord.Quit

from the function then Word should stay open. Just add them back into your application at the point that you want to close Word.

Hi

A few days ago i was defragmenting my C: drive, but stopped and closed the defragmenter - only i don't think it stopped/closed properly because heavy disc activity continued. A few seconds after I closed it I opened a file in Microsoft Word 2000 and the computer rebooted automatically (pausing a little longer then normal on the opening motherboard logo screen).

Ever since that happened, everytime I open Word, Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Winword + i think others, the computer restarts without warning. This also happens when I attempt to print (although i can print succesfully from a pc networked to the same printer).

I've tryed defragmenting C drive completley, ran the Disck Check tool on C:, and have scanned for virus with Norton Antivirus, and re-installed Office 2000 - all with no results.

I am using Windows 2000, P4 2.4ghz, 512 DDR RAM, 3 x 20 GB HD, panasonic laser printer KX-P6100, epson stylus photo 830, Sony DRU-510A DVD-RW

any help regarding what exactly the problem is, what has caused it, or how it can be fixed would be very much appreciated.

thankyou, Jake.

Q: Has anyone seen this problem and is there a patch or setting for Word XP that fixes it?

We have a document created in Word 97 with an embedded Excel Spreadhseet object displaying a chart.

When we open the document in Word 97, everything is normal.

When we open the document in Word XP the chart is rotated 180 degrees around the vertical axis. The chart is right side up, but the left side of the chart is on the right and all the letters are reversed.

When I double-click the object to edit it the chart flips around to normal. When I exit edit mode (without making any changes) it flips back.

When we convert the Excel Worksheet object to an Excel Chart object in Word 97, save the file, and open in Word XP the chart displays normally.

The problem is that we have an automated PDF converter that uses Word XP, so when we create the PDF, it is created with the reversed chart. We are not staffed to open every Word 97 document and convert spreadsheets to charts. How can we fix this without installing Word 97 on the converter?

A:I cannot find a word document I opened as an email attachment

The file will be located in a folder somewhere in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\

"\AppData" is normally hidden
"\Temporary Internet Files" is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in Windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

Good luck in finding it, though.

The correct way is to save the attachment first, then open it
from the saved location, if you wish to edit it.

From time to time, when I open a Word document, it is opened read only. I have no idea why this happens. It is fairly infrequent (3-4 times a month) and seems random.

The problem is that I don't notice that it's read only, so I go about merrily on editing the document. When I try to save it, I get the Save As dialog. In  then have to save it under a different name, delete the old copy, and rename the new one. In addition to a royal pain, it screws up my archive log.

Is there a way that I can have Word warn me whenever a document is opened read only?

Thanks

A:Can I get Word 2007 to warn me when a document is opened read only?

I did a little more research and found this website:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12630878/word-vba-document-readonly-status-incorrectly-returns-false

It has a document_open macro which I adapted as follows:

Sub Document_Open()
If ThisDocument.ReadOnly = False Then Exit Sub
MsgBox "This document is read only."
'UserForm1.Show
End Sub

I saved it in a Normal code module and set a breakpoint. It does get executed every time a document is opened, but the readonly test is always False, even when the document has the Read Only flag set and the title bar clearly says "(Read Only)".

Is there a way to modify this macro so that the MsgBox statement will execute when a document is opened read only?

I didn't have a problem doing the repair. That was successful. I notice after I rebooted the computer and click on a MS Word icon for the first time it takes up to 1 min. for Word to open. Opening a file under MS Word after the first time the software is invoked it runs just fine!

What's up with that?!

Thanks!

In word 2013, when attempting to open one particular file saved in Wof 97-2003 format, Word 2013 crashes right away. I've tried event viewer, but there was no real listed fix.

I've also tried uninstalling add-ins and to no luck

It does however open in Word 2013 safe mode. I can also open under another user on another computer so no there is no corruption on the file.

It also can open in 'Protected' mode for the affected user, but opening normally is when it bombs out. Any resolutions welcomed.

Thanks

It looks like it is open in a standard text editor like notepad.
The default program for word files may have been changed

Try right clicking in document and click open with and select

Hi, I did a fresh installation of Linux Mint 17.1 and I also installed MS Word/Excel/PPT 2010. Everything works fine in Linux, however, when I try to open from Linux any shared Word document on W7, Word launches as 'Document 1' blank. All the other shared documents, like, Pdf, pictures, videos etc. work fine when launched from Linux on W7. I experience the same issue with Excel and PPT I have no idea why, has anybody experienced this? Thanks Alex

You'd probably have better luck on a linux forum. Can you open Excel files? It could be an Office-Linuxdistro issue.

Hi all,
Windows Server 2003 SP2 - is sharing a folder, and the client PC's that are opening files on LAN (100Mbps).
There are 5 PC's 3 with Windows XP, one uses Windows 7 and another one Windows Vista, the problem is detected only on the XP machines. When users try to open a Word or Excel file it hangs, other files are opened instantly (*.pdf, *.exe...). They use Microsoft Office 2007.
What could be the problem ? Why Office files are freezing when being opened from a shared map ?
Please help me solve this issue, thank you in advance.
P.S.: I removed the "Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in" still the issue persists.

When I download software (or an app from CB) and open the download I find that often at least one file, when I open it, has become unusable. In appearance the file is now shown as an oblong outline with the top rt. hand corner turned down. Inside is a square with three 'tear drop' shapes side by side.

When I click to open, a pop-up opens and advises that I should check the web to find a prog with which to open the file. I've not found a prog yet with which to do this.

Please, does anyone recognise any of this ? It's dogged me for months and
ruined any chance of using good d/l's I urgently need in order to earn cash.

Using: XPpro/ Firefox/ AVG/ I'd really appreciate some positive help. Please, don't speculate : I'm 76 and very slow. I really need positive help !

Hi,everyone:
My os is windows7 evaluation copy build 7100.Yesterday, I installed the Deepfreeze 6.61 on my computer. At first, everything works well, but questions came at my second reboot.Driver C is not accessible.
When I doubleclick the shortcuts on my desktop ,the corresponding programs doesn't run.It says'These files can't be opened'.But some of them can be run from the start menu. And the kaspersky,Deepfreeze didn't start when windows boot, their icons didn't show on the notification area.Maybe the problem is Deepfreeze.I want to uninstall it,but I can't call it out by the hot key Shift+Alt+Ctrl+F6.Worse still, most of the system programs such as task manager are not working.
Somebody help me please, thank you very much.

A:Help!'These files can't be opened'

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Usually you can do this by pressing F8 during boot up and a black and white menu will appear, you can now choose SAFE MODE. Once you get to your desktop try uninstall the software as usual. Then reboot.

Sorry, software newbie here

I've been getting this message for heaps of things recently:

First noticed it trying to use Trillian's profile editor, now noticed it applies to anything that connects the Internet to one of my programs... but I can still play games and chat... If that makes any sense. For example, Bad company 2 can be played online, but the updater causes this problem. I also get it trying to run programs rather than save them when I download, and uploading anything anywhere just comes up with errors.

I couldn't update Spybot or Malewarebytes but I re-downloaded the latest versions of both and scanned to no avail, a few pieces of minor tracking cookies and the like, which I deleted before restarting, to find the same problem. Registry checkers all say that everything's fine, and messing with security settings in ways suggested in a few places on this forum didn't help. so... plz help, I feel like I've tried everything.

I have :

tried running the regedit thing when creating a file and naming it reg with the correct coading as found online

tried downloading an exe xp file found online to correct problem

tried manually opening with but have no idea the correct exe file to open it with there are thousands in system 32

When i went to hkey classes and i tried to follow steps online, the exe folder only has one other folder in it, and that is default and content type. I read there was supposed to be more.

I have restored my system but this is still a problem.

When i go to 'set associations' exe is not there. If i download a file and its exe on chrome though it works through the browser.

Hi there,

I turned on my computer this morning and suddenly all hell has broken loose. Every time I try and open an exe file I get a Windows Security alert box telling me that:

"These files can't be opened. Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."

I've read through every thread I can find on the topic and none of the "answers" have worked for me.

I can start programs (and essentially open exe files) if I open them via an associated file type. For example I managed to start firefox by opening an .html document and I've got thunderbird open through the use of an .eml file.

I can't start cmd, regedit, msconfig etc... unless I boot the computer in safe mode with command prompt. Safe mode by itself still produces the same "Windows Security" dialogue boxes.

I have tried the following common "solutions" with no luck:

1) Right click the exe, click Properties
Click the Unblock button
Click OK

2) Adding exe to Control Pannel > Windows Defender > Tools > Options > Excluded file types

3) Start / Control Panel / Internet Options.
(Internet Options control panel appears)
Click "Security" tab.
Click "Local Intranet"
Drag slider to "Low"
Click "Sites" button.
Click "Advanced" button.
Enter the IP Address of the NAS / SMB/ CIFS / whatever server and click &quo... Read more

A:Help: These files can't be opened. Your Internet...

Rather than suffer with this problem, I would try a system restore, that is what the feature is for.

In lieu of that, what happened last night? Did you install a new program, was there any other incident that could have caused this?

If there is no other answer, it could be a virus. Run your Anti Virus. Download and use Malwarebytes.

You can also try to disable your A/V, see if that helps.

Some of the files in my documents (Word documents, Excel docs, pictures, etc.) cannot be opened any more because some hacker left a note saying that payment must be made at paytordmbdekmizq.pay4tor.com in order to decrypt the files before I can use them again. I've heard of this being called file ransom (CryptoWall 2.0).  Norton 360 scanned one of the folders involved and found nothing.  Can anyone tell what my options are right now?  Also, how would the hacker get into my pc in the first place?  Could it be by simply clicking on his site?  I'm pretty careful about not installing unknown .exe files.  Does anyone have any ideas of how this happened and what I can do in the future to prevent it from happening? Also, I've used Norton for over 10 years.  Was this a case of Norton missing it?  If I purchase new anti-virus software, does anyone have a recommendation for a good one that wouldn't miss something like this?Edit: Moved topic from Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoWall is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this tutorial: CryptoWall and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION Ransomware Information Guide and FAQReading that Guide will help you understand what CryptoDefense does and provide information for how to deal with it and possibly decrypt/recover your files. There is also a lengthy ongoing discussion in this topic: CryptoWall - new variant of CryptoDefense. Rather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in that topic discussion.ThanksThe BC Staff
